• Deploying a Java application. How?

  I am new to Java (and Eclipse) but I have used .NET (and Visual Studio) a fair amount. I also know about compiling C/C++ code and things like that. I know that at the end I get either an EXE or a nice binary file that can be run from the command line. I have been making a Java utility that uses some external libraries. I need to compile this into an executable that I can run from the command line on a unix machine, but I cannot find any way to do this. I can build and run/debug in Eclipse, but that is no use to me as this code will be run on a webserver. I just need all the dependancies compiled in to one file but after hours of searching on Google, the best thing I could find was the Fat-JAR plugin for Eclipse and after using that I just get the following error when I try to run the file: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Network/jar This is really confusing me and as it is such an essential thing to be able to do I am sure I must be missing something blindingly obvious, but as I said, after hours of searching I have gotten nowhere. I really appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks.

• How can I find "People's Contacts" folders via Outlook's object model?

  I have some code that locates all the contact folders that a user has access to by iterating through the Application.Session.Stores collection. This works for the user's contacts and also all the public contacts folders. It also finds all the contacts folders in additional mailbox accounts that the user has added via the Tools - Account Settings... menu command. However, this requires the user to have full access to the other person's account. When a user only has access to another person's contacts, then that person's contacts show up under the "People's Contacts" group in the Contacts view. How do I find those contact folders that don't show up under Session.Stores? In order to see the other user's contacts folder without adding access to their full mailbox, click File - Open - Other User's Folder... from the Outlook menu. In the dialog box, enter the other user's name and select Contacts from the Folder type drop down list. Here's the code (minus the error checking and logging) I'm using to find a list of all the user's Outlook contact folders. I know this can (and maybe should) be done using early binding to the Outlook.Application type, but that doesn't affect the results. EnumerateFolders is recursive so that it searches all sub folders. • Apps with lable XYZ could not be found

  Hello folks, today I ran into an error and have no clue how to fix it. Error: App with label XYZ could not be found. Are you sure your INSTALLED_APPS setting is correct? Where XYZ stands for the app-name that I am trying to reset. This error shows up every time I try to reset it (manage.py reset XYZ). Show all the sql code works. Even manage.py validate shows no error. I already commented out every single line of code in the models.py that I touched the last three monts. (function by function, model by model) And even if there are no models left I get this error. Here http://code.djangoproject.com/ticket/10706 I found a bugreport about this error. I also applied one the patches to allocate the error, it raises an exception so you have a trace back, but even there is no sign in what of my files the error occurred. I don't want to paste my code right now, because it is nearly 1000 lines of code in the file I edited the most. If someone of you had the same error please tell me were I can look for the problem. In that case I can post the important part of the source. Otherwise it would be too much at once. Thank you for helping!!!

• Running migration on server when deploying with capistrano

  Hi, I'm trying to deploy my rails application with capistrano, but I'm having some trouble running my migrations. In my development environment I just use sqlite as my database, but on my production server I use MySQL. The problem is that I want the migrations to run from my server and not my local machine, as I am not able to connect to my database from a remote location. My server setup: A debian box running ngnix, passenger, mysql and a git repository. What is the easiest way to do this? update: Here's my deploy script: set :application, "example.com" set :domain, "example.com" set :scm, :git set :repository, "[email protected]:project.git" set :use_sudo, false set :deploy_to, "/var/www/example.com" role :web, domain role :app, domain role :db, "localhost", :primary = true after "deploy", "deploy:migrate" When I run cap deploy, everything is working fine until it tries to run the migration. • Can an interface define the signature of a c#-constructor

  I have a .net-app that provides a mechanism to extend the app with plugins. Each plugin must implement a plugin-interface and must provide furthermore a constructor that receives one parameter (a resource context). During the instantiation of the plugin-class I look via reflection, if the needed constructor exists and if yes, I instantiate the class (via Reflection). If the constructor does not exists, I throw an exception that says that the plugin not could be created, because the desired constructor is not available. My question is, if there is a way to declare the signature of a constructor in the plugin-interface so that everyone that implements the plugin-interface must also provide a constructor with the desired signature. This would ease the creation of plugins. I don’t think that such a possibility exists because I think such a feature falls not in the main purpose for what interfaces were designed for but perhaps someone knows a statement that does this, something like: public interface IPlugin { ctor(IResourceContext resourceContext); int AnotherPluginFunction(); } I want to add that I don't want to change the constructor to be parameterless and then set the resource-context through a property, because this will make the creation of plugins much more complicated. The persons that write plugins are not persons with deep programming experience. The plugins are used to calculate statistical data that will be visualized by the app.

  I am using CruiseControl.net for continous integration. I've created a repository for my project using VisualSvn server (uses Windows Authentication). Both the servers are hosted in the same system (Os-Microsoft Windows Server 2003 sp2). • Java hangs when trying to close a ProcessBuilder OutputStream

  I have the following Java code to start a ProcessBuilder, open an OutputStream, have the process write a string to an OutputStream, and then close the OutputStream. The whole thing hangs indefinitely when I try to close the OutputStream. This only happens on Windows, never on Mac or Linux. Some of the related questions seem to be close to the same problem I'm having, but I haven't been able to figure out how to apply the answers to my problem, as I am a relative newbie with Java. Here is the code. You can see I have put in a lot of println statements to try to isolate the problem. Is there anything like a checksum for the class file? I looked up the format of a classfile in http://java.sun.com/docs/books/jvms/second_edition/html/ClassFile.doc.html but could not find anything which points out to some kind of bytes_of_classfile or something. I also don't understand why the error is "Truncated Class File", because I did append something :-) I know its not a good idea to edit class files directly, but I'm just interested on the VM internals here.

• Where can I find a list of all possible messages that an XmlException can contain?

  I'm writing an XML code editor and I want to display syntax errors in the user interface. Because my code editor is strongly constrained to a particular problem domain and audience, I want to rewrite certain XMLException messages to be more meaningful for users. For instance, an exception message like this: '"' is an unexpected token. The expected token is '='. Line 30, position 35 .. is very technical and not very informative to my audience. Instead, I'd like to rewrite it and other messages to something else. For completeness' sake that means I need to build up a dictionary of existing messages mapped to the new message I would like to display instead. To accomplish that I'm going to need a list of all possible messages XMLException can contain. Is there such a list somewhere? Or can I find out the possible messages through inspection of objects in C#? Edit: specifically, I am using XmlDocument.LoadXml to parse a string into an XmlDocument, and that method throws an XmlException when there are syntax errors. So specifically, my question is where I can find a list of messages applied to XmlException by XmlDocument.LoadXml. The discussion about there potentially being a limitless variation of actual strings in the Message property of XmlException is moot.

• DataReader-DataSet Hybrid solution

  My solution architects and I have exhausted both pure Dataset and Datareader solutions. Basically we have a Microsoft.NET 2.0 windows service application that pulls data based on a query and processes additional tasks per record; almost a poor mans workflow system. The recordsets are broader (in terms of the columns) and deeper (in terms of number of records). We observed that DataSet performs much better in terms of performance but runs into contraints as # of records increase say 100K+ we start seeing System.OutOfMemoryException on a 4G machine with processModel configured to run at memoryLimit set to 85. Since this is a multi-threaded app, there could be multiple threads processing different queries and building different DataSets, so we run into the exception sooner in that case DataReader on the other hand works but is a lot slower and hits other contraints; if there is some sort of disconnect it has to start over again or leaves open connections on the DB side and worst case takes down the service completely etc. So, we decided the best option would be some sort of hybrid solution. I'm open to guidance and suggestions. Are there any hybrid solutions available? Any other suggestions

For some reason, I am getting a strange COM error (0x800A03EC) Has anyone managed to get this to work? Does anyone have suggestions as to how to troubleshoot this? • .Net Remoting: Serialize Object and implementation

  Hi, In my scenario there is a client-side assembly that contains a class (Task). This class implements an interface (ITask) that is known on the server. I'm trying to send a Task object from client to server without copying the assembly of the client manually to the server. If I just serialize the task object, the server obviously complains about the missing assembly. I then tried to serialze typeof(Task).Assembly but could not derserialize it on the server. Next I tried to File.ReadAllBytes(typeof(Task).Assembly.Location) and saved it to a temporary file on the server, which threw an exception on Assembly.LoadFrom(@".\temporary.dll"); Why am I doing this? Java RMI has a neat feature to request the implementation of an object that is received through remoting but is stil "unkown" (this JVM doesn't have the *.class file). This can be used for a compute server that just knows the interface of a "task" containing a run() method and downloads the implementation of this method on demand. This way the server doesn't have to be changed for new tasks. I'm trying to achieve something like this in .Net.

• Code Organization Connundrum: Web Project With Multiple Supporting DLLs?

  Hi. I am trying to get a handle on the best practice for code organization within my project. I have looked around on the internet for good examples and, so far, I have seen examples of a web project with one or multiple supporting class libraries that it references or a web project with sub-folders that follow its namespace conventions. Assuming there is no right answer, this is what I currently have for code organization: MyProjectWeb This is my web site. I am referencing my class libraries here. MyProject.DLL As the base namespace, I am using this DLL for files that need to be generally consumable. For example, my class "Enums" that has all the enumerations in my project lives there. As does class MyProjectException for all exception handling. MyProject.IO.DLL This is a grouping of maybe 20 files that handle file upload and download (so far). MyProject.Utilities.DLL ALl my common classes and methods bunched up together in one generally consumable DLL. Each class follows a "XHelper" convention such as "SqlHelper, AuthHelper, SerializationHelper, and so on... MyProject.Web.DLL I am using this DLL as the main client interface. Right now, the majority of class files here are: 1) properties (such as School, Location, Account, Posts) 2) authorization stuff ( such as custom membership, custom role, & custom profile providers) My question is simply - does this seem logical? Also, how do I avoid having to cross reference DLLs from one project library to the next? For example, MyProject.Web.DLL uses code from MyProject.Utilities.DLL and MyProject.Utilities.DLL uses code from MyProject.DLL. Is this solved by clicking on properties and selecting "Dependencies"? I tried that but still don't seem to be accessing the namespaces of the assembly I have selected. Do I have to reference every assembly I need for each class library?   I would like to implement an observer pattern in Objective-C where the observer implements an interface similar to SKPaymentTransactionObserver and the observable class just extends my base observable. My observable class looks something like what is below. Notice I'm making copies of the observers before enumeration to avoid throwing an exception . I've tried adding an NSLock around add observers and notify observers, but I run into a deadlock. • A linked list with multiple heads in Java

  Hi, I have a list in which I'd like to keep several head pointers. I've tried to create multiple ListIterators on the same list but this forbid me to add new elements in my list... (see Concurrent Modification exception). • Setting a parameter as a list for an IN expression

Various posts on the internet seem to indicate that this is possible, but it's certainly not working for me. I'm using Glassfish V2.1 with Toplink. • How to perform Linq select new with datetime in SQL 2008

  In our C# code I recently changed a line from inside a linq-to-sql select new query as follows: OrderDate = (p.OrderDate.HasValue ? p.OrderDate.Value.Year.ToString() + "-" + p.OrderDate.Value.Month.ToString() + "-" + p.OrderDate.Value.Day.ToString() : "") To: OrderDate = (p.OrderDate.HasValue ? p.OrderDate.Value.ToString("yyyy-mm-dd") : "") The change makes the line smaller and cleaner. It also works fine with our SQL 2008 database in our development environment. However, when the code deployed to our production environment which uses SQL 2005 I received an exception stating: Nullable Type must have a value. For further analysis I copied (p.OrderDate.HasValue ? p.OrderDate.Value.ToString("yyyy-mm-dd") : "") into a string (outside of a Linq statement) and had no problems at all, so it only causes an in issue inside my Linq. Is this problem just something to do with SQL 2005 using different date formats than from SQL 2008? Here's more of the Linq: dt = FilteredOrders.Where(x => x != null).Select(p => new { Order = p.OrderId, link = "/order/" + p.OrderId.ToString(), StudentId = (p.PersonId.HasValue ? p.PersonId.Value : 0), FirstName = p.IdentifierAccount.Person.FirstName, LastName = p.IdentifierAccount.Person.LastName, DeliverBy = p.DeliverBy, OrderDate = p.OrderDate.HasValue ? p.OrderDate.Value.Date.ToString("yyyy-mm-dd") : ""}).ToDataTable(); This is selecting from a List of Order objects. The FilteredOrders list is from another linq-to-sql query and I call .AsEnumerable on it before giving it to this particular select new query. • InfoPath FormControl on STA worker thread

  I have a .NET class that exposes two public methods: one to create an InfoPath form and another to Export to one of the supported formats. I’m using the Microsoft FormControl to do this. It’s hosted by a Form that does not get displayed. I get called by a Winforms app, but on an MTA worker thread instead of the UI thread. So I create an STA thread and execute on that, which works exactly once and then results in this exception: System.InvalidOperationException was unhandled Message="Unable to get the window handle for the 'FormControl' control. Windowless ActiveX controls are not supported."   I'm experimenting with PHP's session_set_save_handler and I'd like to use a PDO connection to store session data. The sessions db table remains empty. The log message from the _close callback is always present. Here's how I connect to the database: $db = new PDO('mysql:host=' . DBHOST . ';dbname=' . DBNAME, DBUSER, DBPASS); $db->setAttribute(PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE, PDO::ERRMODE_EXCEPTION); I have PHP 5.2.10. I tried to simply run $GLOBALS['db']->exec($sql) with a "manually prepared" $sql content, but it still failed silently. The query itself is all right I was able to execute it via the db console.

  hiya, i have the following code but when i try and create a new IQuerable i get an error that the interface cannot be implemented, if i take away the new i get a not implemented exception, have had to jump back and work on some old ASP classic sites for past month and for the life of me i can not wake my brain up into C# mode.
