• Google search question, front page not showing

  I know this is probably a dumb question but I hope someone can give me some insight; I was ranked on Google first page of search results for "funny st patricks day shirts" but I was third from the bottom and not familiar enough with SEO, so I signed up for "Attracta" to rank higher. Big mistake. Since using Attracta, I've lost the first page and I'm now on the fourth page in that search. What I noticed is that Google is now just showing a sub-page or side page, (a link from my front page, to a page which has only a few designs in it) this is not where I would want customers to land first... but my front page is not showing in that search anymore. Obviously, the title of this side page is not geared toward that search result, so I know that's why I have the pr drop. Why is my front page not ranking over that page, though? Why is it apparently gone from that search, or so far back no one will ever find it? I need to know how to fix this quick if anyone has any advice at all for me. It's the busiest season for my website and the people who were stealing design ideas from me are all ranked higher than my site now. (I can prove this, lol) So, I'm very frustrated by that. • startx error no desktop manager

  I have Backtrack 5R2 KDE. I started recovery mode and did a failsafe xorg configuration. After that, I cannot load the KDE manager when I enter the startx command after logging in. Whenever I do a startx command (as root), the result resembles the following: This is not the actual output (I just drew this with MS paint because I cannot do a printscreen). The screen is just black with the icon in the upper left corner. The other pop-up menu appears when left-clicking the mouse. I tried the cp xorg.conf.failsafe xorg.conf advice from other websites with no luck. I have also tried the 'reconfigure option(s)' form the recovery mode with no success.

• What is wrong with my logic for the divide and conquer algorithm for Closest pair problem?

  I have been following Coursera's course on Algorithms and came up with a thought about the divide/conquer algorithm for the closest pair problem, that I want clarified. As per Prof Roughgarden's algorithm (which you can see here if you're interested): For a given set of points P, of which we have two copies - sorted in X and Y direction - Px and Py, the algorithm can be given as closestPair(Px,Py): Divide points into left half - Q, and right half - R, and form sorted copies of both halves along x and y directions - Qx,Qy,Rx,Ry Let closestPair(Qx,Qy) be points p1 and q1 Let closestPair(Rx,Ry) be p2,q2 Let delta be minimum of dist(p1,q1) and dist(p2,q2) This is the unfortunate case, let p3,q3 be the closestSplitPair(Px,Py,delta) Return the best result Now, the clarification that I want is related to step 5. I should say this beforehand, that what I'm suggesting, is barely any improvement at all, but if you're still interested, read ahead. Prof R says that since the points are already sorted in X and Y directions, to find the best pair in step 5, we need to iterate over points in the strip of width 2*delta, starting from bottom to up, and in the inner loop we need only 7 comparisions. Can this be bettered to just one? How I think is possible seemed a little difficult to explain in plain text, so I drew a diagram and wrote it on paper and uploaded it here: Since no one else came up with is, I'm pretty sure there's some error in my line of thought. But I have literally been thinking about this for HOURS now, and I just HAD to post this. It's all that is in my head. Can someone point out where I'm going wrong?

• Ubuntu One, compressed files

  I have uploaded some files to my Ubuntu One account and it seems to work great most of the time. I usually upload them directly from Nautilus by right clicking the folder, using the ”Synchronize this folder” option, and then I make sure that the file I want to upload is published. Then I usually test the whole thing by trying to download it. I right click the file again to get its URL and I paste it into my Web browser. This usually works fine. But yesterday I uploaded two compressed files – ”.tar.bz2”. When I tried to open them after downloading them with my Web browser (Opera), it failed. I found that the file was bigger than the original file (2358 B instead af 2335 B – 15 B added at the beginning of the file and 8 B added to the end), and someone at the Opera channel (IRC) at OperaNet (Europe) figured out that the reason for this is that the server compress the file again, ”without telling Opera”. So to be able to extract the file I need to add ”.gz” to the file name and then extract it twice. If I downloaded it with Firefox however, I didn't need to do that, so maybe Firefox figured this out somehow in a way that Opera does not. Someone also tried to download the file with wget and some other browser and he also got the same result as I did with Opera, that is the file is compressed a second time by the server. I guess ”the server” is the Ubuntu One server, right? So why is this? Could it be done better somehow? Or did I do something wrong when uploading the files? It also seems like this extra compressing thing does not always happen, because when I tried again a few minutes ago, the file came down with its right size (2335 B), without an extra compression. But the other file (114 MiB) was still compressed twice.

• Virtualbox and getting the Locked VT-x Error when trying to use more than 1 processor on the session

  I have installed the latest version of virtualbox onto my Hewlett Pakard (h8-1170uk) I have a intel i7 2600 cpu and 8 gb of ram I can get virtual box to create several sessions of different operating systems at the same time, but whenever i try to get 1 session to open up using more than 1 processor option select ( i wanted one of my session access to 2 processors ) i keep getting this error message VT-x features locked or unavailable in MSR. (VERR_VMX_MSR_LOCKED_OR_DISABLED). Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005) Component: Console Interface: IConsole {1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb} I have search many times and cannot find a option to correct this. I have check my BIOS and there are no options about VT-x or Virtualisation or anything. Am i doing something wrong ? Why does Virtualbox run fine when just using the 1 processor option ?

• XNA 4.0 - Purple/Pink Tint Over All Sprites After Viewing in FullScreen

  I'm a noob to the game dev world and recently finished the 2D XNA tutorial from http://www.pluralsight.com. Everything was perfect until I decided to try the game in Fullscreen mode. The following code was added to the Game1 constructor. graphics.PreferredBackBufferWidth = 800; graphics.PreferredBackBufferHeight = 480; graphics.IsFullScreen = true; As soon as it launched in Fullscreen, I noticed that the entire game was tinted. None of the colours were appearing as they should. That code was removed, the game then launched in the 800x480 window, however the tint remained. I commented out all my Draw code so that all that was left was GraphicsDevice.Clear(Color.CornflowerBlue); //spriteBatch.Begin(); //gameState.Draw(spriteBatch, false); //spriteBatch.End(); //spriteBatch.Begin(SpriteSortMode.Deferred, BlendState.Additive); //gameState.Draw(spriteBatch, true); //spriteBatch.End(); base.Draw(gameTime); The result was an empty window that was tinted Purple, not Blue. I changed the GraphicsDevice.Clear colour to Color.White and the window was tinted Pink. Color.Transparent gave a Black window. Even tried rebooting my PC but the 'tint' still remains. I'm at a loss here.

  I have 2 computers. On the computer A, I have a custom module written in C# for powershell 3.0 and installed via a MSI. I also have a shortcut that open powershell with the module already loaded. I can just double click on my shortcut and run my command Do-Something on this computer without any problem, like the Exchange Server powershell. But now I would like to do it from a remote session on computer B in C#. So my question is, how can I open a remote powershell session to computer A with my module already loaded and the shell configured so I can just run my command and obtain the same result than if I run it on computer A?

  SharePoint list items have in the the base Item template a field named Order. This field is not shown by default. SharePoint 2007, 2010 and 2013 have a possibility to specify the order in a UI, using the _layouts page: {SiteUrl}/_layouts/Reorder.aspx?List={ListId} In SharePoint 2010 and 2013 it is possible to add a custom action to a list.   I attached two identical hard drives to my linux machine. Then using gparted I formated the first 1024 mb at the beginning of each drive as linux swap space. Then I went into system-administration-disk utility. In there I went to file-create-RAID array. I selected the remaining space in each of the two identical hard drives and created a striped raid array. After the array was created, a warning message appeared. It said "The partition is misaligned by 522240 bytes. This may result in very poor performance. Repartitioning is suggested." What do I do now? As far as I can tell, the partitions are identical.

I have .MTS files and i edit the movieclips in Adobe Premiere. I have played with the export settings but i can't get the filesize down. The finaly result is a file around 250MB and i think it's too big. I need to have the file in .mp4 format. So i asking, wich is the best settings for exporting movies in Premire for the web?

The 50.2 computer may send a packet to the x.2 computer, but it will use 50.1 as the router, since 50.2 knows that the subnet is different. Would this result in the packet being received twice by the x.2 machine, first directly through the switch, second by way of the two routers? Do you see any problems with this aside from how confusing it is, and that it would put one switch doing the work of two subnets?

• Coordinate and positioning problem on iOS with cocos2d-x

  I'm using cocos2d-x alongside with Marmalade and running some tests and tutorials before starting an actual project with them. So far things are working reasonably well on the windows simulator, Android and even on Blackberry's Playbook, but on iOS devices (iPhone and iPad) the positioning seems to be off. To make things clearer, I put together a scene that just draws an image in the middle of the screen. It worked as expected on everything else, but this is the result I got on an iPhone: To get the coordinates for the center of the screen I'm using the VisibleRect class from the TestCpp sample. It just uses sharedOpenGLView to get the visible size and visible origin, and calculate the center from that. CCSprite* test = CCSprite::create("Ball.png", CCRectMake(0, 0, 80, 80) ); test->setPosition( ccp(VisibleRect::center().x, VisibleRect::center().y) ); this->addChild(test); Also I have a noBorder policy set on AppDelegate: CCEGLView::sharedOpenGLView()->setDesignResolutionSize(designSize.width, designSize.height, kResolutionNoBorder); One funny thing is that I tried to deploy the TestCpp sample project to some iOS devices and it worked reasonably well on the iPhone, but on the iPad the application was only being drawn on a small portion of the screen - just like what happened on the iPhone when I tried using the ShowAll policy.

• Stop Windows 7 from forcefully shutting itself down when waiting to update

  I have had this happen to me twice now. I'll be in the middle of working on something that has resulted in me not rebooting my machine for several days. If Windows 7 is waiting to install updates it'll eventually get to a point where it forces a restart to install the updates. The problem is that it doesn't notify me or tell me that its going to do this and I've lost work as a result and most recently had a VM become corrupt and unusable. Is there a way to at least get it to prompt me before doing this? It used to...

• New to emacs -- my key bindings are different from what is described in the tutorials. How to fix this?

  I'm using emacs v24 [GNU Emacs 24.0.94.1 (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 3.3.20) of 2012-03-26 on meitnerium, modified by Debian] on Kubuntu 12.04. My basic problem is that emacs is not behaving the same as the tutorials I'm reading. I either need different tutorials or I need to make my emacs work as described in the tutorials. Being new to emacs and KDE, I don't know where to start because of this incongruence. My specific problem is this: When I shift-left-mouse-click, I get a buffer dialog popup. That differs from my understanding of the documenation: shift mouse-1 Draws lines, rectangles or poly-lines, erases, cuts, copies or pastes. I also want to use CUA mode. The CUA mode documents seem to indicate that shift-left-mouse-click produces: rectangle highlighting by dragging the mouse while holding down the shift key. I don't get that result either. In fact, I can't select using any modifier keys together with a drag action. Maybe this is a KDE issue. I don't know.

• Vmware server: Browser does not load user interface

  I have the latest vmware server isntalled on ubuntu 8.04 lts 64 bit. I access the user interface over this url, which matches my ip and port settings: https://10.1.1.99:11222/ui Sometimes it works in fierofox 3.6, but sometimes not. Same in Google Chrome. When it does not work, what happens is that the cert is checked, the browser is loading something, but the result is a white page. Sometimes the favicon of vmware (blue with 3 squares) appears, but only the white page. And sometimes it works. I reload many times, most of the time the whit epage appears again. On some days I succeed. But on many days not. I can give more info if someone tells me what is needed. Please help, we need this badly.

• Name of the Countdown Numbers round problem - and algorithmic solutions?

  For the non-Brits in the audience, there's a segment of a daytime game-show where contestants have a set of 6 numbers and a randomly generated target number. They have to reach the target number using any (but not necessarily all) of the 6 numbers using only arithmetic operators. All calculations must result in positive integers. An example: Youtube: Countdown - The Most Extraordinary Numbers Game Ever? A detailed description is given on Wikipedia: Countdown (Game Show) For example: The contentant selects 6 numbers - two large (possibilities include 25, 50, 75, 100) and four small (numbers 1 .. 10, each included twice in the pool). The numbers picked are 75, 50, 2, 3, 8, 7 are given with a target number of 812. One attempt is (75 + 50 - 8) * 7 - (3 * 2) = 813 (This scores 7 points for a solution within 5 of the target) An exact answer would be (50 + 8) * 7 * 2 = 812 (This would have scored 10 points exactly matching the target). Obviously this problem has existed before the advent of TV, but the Wikipedia article doesn't give it a name. I've also saw this game at a primary school I attended where the game was called "Crypto" as an inter-class competition - but searching for it now reveals nothing. I took part in it a few times and my dad wrote an Excel spreadsheet that attempted to brute-force the problem, I don't remember how it worked (only that it didn't work, what with Excel's 65535 row limit), but surely there must be an algorithmic solution for the problem. Maybe there's a solution that works the way human cognition does (e.g. in-parallel to find numbers 'close enough', then taking candidates and performing 'smaller' operations).

• Tracking "To Do" Items

  One of the challenges I struggle with is keeping a good "to do" list of things I need to do on the various SQL Servers I support. I have servers that I don't visit on a regular basis so my situation may be different than many of you. Though I'm sure you all have servers that you only touch every few months. (And it's usually the accounting server!) It's difficult for me to remember what changes I made and what changes I need to make. I've tried Outlook, OneNote and various other to do list managers and haven't been happy with any of them. Many are close but just don't give me what I need. As a result I've started writing my own. It's web-based so you can use it from anywhere -- including on a server. It also knows just enough about SQL Server to help structure your to do items and your notes. It isn't agent based and doesn't do any monitoring. Think OneNote or Evernote but with some "SQL Servery" stuff built in. If you'd like to try this or take a survey I'm putting together, add your email address to my mailing list.  I should be ready in a week or so.  I'm only going to use this list for notifications about this service. I'd like to find a small group of people that feel the same pain I do and maybe we can build something interesting.

  Hi, I have a SATA USB flash module which was earlier running a 2.4 linux kernel (2.4.36.6) and on which now I am trying to install ubuntu server 10.04.1 LTS. On both the systems SCSI emulation with usb_storage driver is being used to detect the module.   I've configured an Apache server with SSL and reverse proxy to a tomcat <VirtualHost domain.com:1443> [...] ProxyRequests Off ProxyPreserveHost On ProxyPass / http://local.com:8080/ ProxyPassReverse / http://local.com:8080 SSLEngine on [...] </VirtualHost> Tomcat is listening on 8080. The issue is that the app on tomcat is redirecting the request (HTTP 302 Moved temporairly). For example, if I use the URL https:// domain.com:1443/folder, reverse proxy launch the request http:// local.com:8080/folder, then, the app redirect to "/subfolder", so the final request is: http://domain.com:1443/folder/subfolder. Result is a 400 Bad request error code, as the request is HTTP on my SSL port. Do you know how I can fix this issue ? Thanks in advance.

  Are there any free programs or web services for reverse engineering a formula given a set of inputs and outputs? Consider if had 3 columns of data. The first two numbers are inputs, and the last one is an output: 3,4,7 1,4,5 4,2,6 The outputs could be produced with simply a+b, but there could be many formulas that would give the same result of course. I am talking about data without any error or deviation, and I think the formula would only need basic operations(divide, multiply, add, sutbract) and possibly use one of floor/ceiling/round.

• OUCH! Laptop running SUPER HOT after 12.10 upgrade!

  I was running 12.04 for 6 months, my laptop ran almost silently and cool enough to hold on my lap. I updated to 12.10 and now my computer gets too hot to hold on my lap and the fan is constantly running on full blast. This is the output of sensors: acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +84.0°C (crit = +99.0°C) coretemp-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter Physical id 0: +84.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 0: +74.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 1: +72.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 2: +75.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 3: +84.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) radeon-pci-0100 Adapter: PCI adapter temp1: +76.0°C I have an HP Pavilion dv6, i7, amd radeon graphics. Please let me know if you need additional information. What could be different between the two Ubuntu editions that caused such a drastic change? Edit 1: Per @Paul's suggestion, I ran htop to try to narrow down the problem. Here is the result! (left side of terminal) (right side of terminal) This is about 10 minutes after boot-up, htop, yakuake, and a chrome page with 1 tab opened to this question are all that I have manually opened. The most taxing program to the CPU is htop itself. I think that the problem must lie elsewhere; my temps are already up to ~65C for the CPU and ~69C for the GPU, with nearly 0% CPU usage.

  Oracle Installed Base is an item instance life cycle tracking application that facilitates enterprise-wide life cycle item management and tracking capability.In a typical process flow a sales order is created and shipped, this updates Inventory and creates a new item instance in Install Base (IB).  The Inventory update results in a record being placed in the SFM Event Queue.  If the record is successfully processed the IB tables are updated, if there is an error the record is placed in the csi_txn_errors table and the error needs to be resolved so that the IB instance can be created.It's extremely important to be proactive and monitor IB Transaction Errors regularly.  Errors cascade and can build up exponentially if not resolved. Due to this cascade effect, error records need to be considered as a whole and not individually; the root cause of any error needs to be resolved first and this may result in the subsequent errors resolving themselves.   So I am developing this application for rating books (think like IMDB for books) using relational database. Problem statement : Let's say book "A" deserves 8.5 in absolute sense. In case if A is the best book I have ever seen, I'll most probably rate it 9.5 whereas for someone else, it might be just an average book, so he/they will rate it less (say around 8). Let's assume 4 such guys rate it 8. If there are 10 guys who are like me (who haven't ever read great literature) and they all rate it 9.5-10. This will effectively make it's cumulative rating greater than 9 (9.5*10 + 8*4) / 14 = 9.1 whereas we needed the result to be 8.5 ... How can I take care of(normalize) this bias due to incorrect perception of individuals. MyProposedSolution : Here's one of the ways how I think it could be solved. We can have a variable Lit_coefficient which tells us how much knowledge a user has about literature. If I rate "A"(the book) 9.5 and person "X" rates it 8, then he must have read books much better than "A" and thus his Lit_coefficient should be higher. And then we can normalize the ratings according to the Lit_coefficient of user. Could there be a better algorithm/solution for the same?

• Why do my websites have a first page rank on Bing and Yahoo but not Google? [closed]

  I have 3 websites suffering from a drop in ranking with Google and hence a huge drop in traffic. The instant drop ocurred in September and I have not been able to remedy it. For the past 6-10 years my main website http://LearnToSail.Net has ranked from #3 to #1 on the 1st page of Google and all the other engines with the search term "learn to sail" Now it shows on the 1st page of Bing and Yahoo but does not show up on ANY pages of Google. The only way it does come up is if I add "cd" to the "learn to sail" phrase. We sell a sailing cd on that website. The other websites are http://LearnToSailOnLine.com ..search terms are "learn to sail online" or learntosailonline and historyofthepilgrims.com search terms are "history of the pilgrims" "historyofthepilgrims" I get the same result. Gone on Google but 1st pages for Bing and Yahoo. I have researched, edited,updated blogs, made sitemaps, prayed to the universe and use Google Webmaster tools but nothing is changing and I have lost alot of business. I host with 1and1.com and have been back and forth with them but to no avail and no change in traffic. I thought maybe some DNS mapping was off. I used to have alot of traffic now I have hardly any. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am still in the process of working on the issue of course! This is a really great website here and I am glad I came across it.
