• Ubuntu Server and setting up two nic cards

  I have ubuntu server on a computer with a wireless and hardwired nic card. The wireless needs to get the internet and pass it to the ubuntu server as well as pass it along to the hardwired nic card to more computers. I am having issues getting the basic set up as I believe the route table is grabbing from the wrong nic card. The router is 192.168.1.0 and the server is set to 192.168.1.11 on the wireless card through DHCP ETH0 (wired nic card) is set up to be 10.10.10.0 and the server is 10.10.10.1) I am not a linux or networking guru but basically I am trying to have internet come from a guest network 192.168.1.0 i believe to give internet to the ubuntu server then the ubuntu server will also A) have the wired nic serve DHCP addresses to other computers via a switch or router (that acts as a switch) via 10.10.10.0 addresses. And I would love if it also passed along internet capabilities as well if possible. Bu really at this point my hope is to at least get the internet working on the server and the DHCP to pass correctly. At the moment the specific issue I am having is getting ubuntu server to connect to the internet and have both nic cards up and running correctly. Any help would be appreciated! • Radiosity using a hemisphere

  I'm working on a radiosity processor. I'm projecting scene geometry onto a hemisphere at a high order of tessellation during a visibility pass onto a 1024x1024 render target. The problem is that the edges of certain triangles are not being rendered to the item buffer( render target )...so when I test certain edges( or pixels during pixel shader ) for visibility during a reconstruction pass, visible edges are not identified and as a result the pixel for that edge is discarded. One solution was to increase the resolution of the item buffer( up to 4096x4096 )...this helped and more edges were visible, however, this was not fullproof. How do I increase visibility? Here is a screenshot of a scene after radiosity is applied: the seams are edges along a triangle face that were not visible due to the resolution of the item buffer... fixed the problem by sampling the item buffer w/8 points:

  Tiled terrain. User wants to build a structure. He presses build and for each tile there is an "allow" or "disallow" tile sprite added to the scene. FPS drops right away, since there are 600+ tiles added to the screen. Since map equals screen, there is no scrolling. I came to an idea to make an allow grid covering the whole map and mask the disallow fields. Approach 1: Create allow and disallow grid textures. Draw a polygon on screen. Pass both textures to the fragment shader. Determine the position inside the polygon and use color from allowTexture if the fragment belongs to the allow field, disallow otherwise Problem: How do I know if I'm on the field that isn't allowed if I cannot pass the matrix representing the map (enum FieldStatus[][] (Allow / Disallow)) to the shader? Pass both textures to the fragment shader. Use texture2 color if alpha 0, texture1 color otherwise. Problem: I'm not sure what is the right way to manipulate pixels on a texture. Do I just make a buffer with width*height*4 size and memcpy the color[] to desired coordinates or is there anything else to it? Would I have to call glTexImage2D after every change to the texture? • A good way to build a game loop in OpenGL

  I'm currently beginning to learn OpenGL at school, and I've started making a simple game the other day (on my own, not for school). I'm using freeglut, and am building it in C, so for my game loop I had really just been using a function I made passed to glutIdleFunc to update all the drawing and physics in one pass. This was fine for simple animations that I didn't care too much about the frame rate, but since the game is mostly physics based, I really want to (need to) tie down how fast it's updating. So my first attempt was to have my function I pass to glutIdleFunc (myIdle()) to keep track of how much time has passed since the previous call to it, and update the physics (and currently graphics) every so many milliseconds. I used timeGetTime() to do this (by using <windows.h>). And this got me to thinking, is using the idle function really a good way of going about the game loop? My question is, what is a better way to implement the game loop in OpenGL? Should I avoid using the idle function?

• Actor and Sprite, who should own these properties?

  I'm writing sort of a 2D game engine for making the process of creating games easier. It has two classes, Actor and Sprite. Actor is used for interactive elements (the player, enemies, bullets, a menu, an invisible instance that controls score, etc) and Sprite is used for animated (or not) images with transparency (or not). The actor may have an assigned sprite that represents it on the screen, which may change during the game. E.g. in a top-down action game you may have an actor with a sprite of a little guy that changes when attacking, walking, and facing different directions, etc. Currently the actor has x and y properties (its coordinates in the screen), while the sprite has an index property (the number of the frame currently being shown by the sprite). Since the sprite doesn't know which actor it belongs to (or if it belongs to an actor at all), the actor must pass its x and y coordinates when drawing the sprite. Also, since a actors may reset its sprite each frame (and usually do), the sprite's index property must be passed from the old to the new sprite like so (pseudocode): function change_sprite(new_sprite) old_index = my.sprite.index my.sprite = new_sprite() my.sprite.index = old_index % my.sprite.frames end I always thought this was kind of cumbersome, but it never was a big problem. Now I decided to add support for more properties. Namely a property to draw the sprite rotated, a property to draw it flipped, it a property draw it stretched, etc. These should probably belong to the sprite and not the actor, but if they do, the actor would have to pass them from the old to the new sprite each time it changes... On the other hand, if they belonged to the actor, the actor would have to pass each property to the sprite when drawing it (since the sprite doesn't know which actor it belongs to, and it shouldn't, since sprites aren't just meant to be used by actors, really). Another option I thought of would be having an extra class that owns all these properties (plus index, x and y) and links an actor with a sprite, but that doesn't come without drawbacks. So, what should I do with all these properties? Thanks!

That means a tile(or pixel) can be: 0% transparent (unexplored) 50% transparent black (explored but not in viewrange) 100% transparent(explored and in viewrange) RTS means I'll have many explorers (NPCs, buildings, ...). Okay, so I have an 2d array of bytes byte[,] explored. The byte value correlates the transparency. The question is, how do I pass this array to my shader? Well I think it is not possible to pass an entire array. So: what technique shall I use to let my shader know if a pixel/tile is visible or not?

  Remember when 11g first came out and we had "invisible indexes"?  It seemed like a confusing feature - indexes that would be maintained by modifications (hence slowing them down), but would not be used by queries (hence never speeding them up).  But - after you looked at them a while, you could see how they can be useful.  For example - to add an index in a running production system, an index used by the next version of the code to be introduced later that week - but not tested against the queries in version one of the application in place now.  We all know that when you add an index - one of three things can happen - a given query will go much faster, it won't affect a given query at all, or... It will make some untested query go much much slower than it used to.  So - invisible indexes allowed us to modify the schema in a 'safe' manner - hiding the change until we were ready for it.Invisible columns accomplish the same thing - the ability to introduce a change while minimizing any negative side effects of that change.  Normally when you add a column to a table - any program with a SELECT * would start seeing that column, and programs with an INSERT INTO T VALUES (...) would pretty much immediately break (an INSERT without a list of columns in it).  Now we can add a column to a table in an invisible fashion, the column will not show up in a DESCRIBE command in SQL*Plus, it will not be returned with a SELECT *, it will not be considered in an INSERT INTO T VALUES statement.  It can be accessed by any query that asks for it, it can be populated by an INSERT statement that references it, but you won't see it otherwise.For example, let's start with a simple two column table:ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1> create table t  2  ( x int,  3    y int  4  )  5  /Table created.ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1> insert into t values ( 1, 2 );1 row created.Now, we will add an invisible column to it:ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1> alter table t add                     ( z int INVISIBLE );Table altered.Notice that a DESCRIBE will not show us this column:ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1> desc t Name              Null?    Type ----------------- -------- ------------ X                          NUMBER(38) Y                          NUMBER(38)and existing inserts are unaffected by it:ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1> insert into t values ( 3, 4 );1 row created.A SELECT * won't see it either:ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1> select * from t;         X          Y---------- ----------         1          2         3          4But we have full access to it (in well written programs! • Handling array passed to object at creation

  When creating my object I pass it an array of a row from my database. (everything in the array we will need, disregarding unnecessary elements at sql query level) When I need to access certain array elements from within my class, I do so like $this->row['element'] However, As I continue development, I sometimes forget what exactly is in this passed array.(this itself doesn't seem good) I am wondering if their is a professional approach to dealing with this, Or am I the only one who has these "I wonder whats in the array" thoughts. One approach to tackling this could be that when we originally pass the array, in the constructor, we assign each element of the array to its own variable, but is this considered professional practice? Additionally by doing this, we could make those variables constants, in a attempt at immutability. Overall I am trying to adhere to good software craftsmanship. Regards.

To pass the information I have a couple of choices: Pass the information as parameters Set instance variables so that other methods can access them When should I choose one option over the other? It seems that the first option is good as it is very specific about what is being passed. the downside seems to be that a lot of values are being passed around. The second method doesn't require passing all the values around but seems to lead to a lot of magic where methods set instance variables 'somewhere' Should I always be very explicit about gets passed to other methods in the class? Are there exceptions so this?

  Where are you supposed to store InputLayout? Suppose i have some basic structure like. class Mesh { List<MeshPart> MeshParts } class MeshPart { Effect Effect; VertexBufferBinding VertexBuffer; ... } Where should I store input layout? It's a connection between vertex buffer and specific pass, i can live with just 1 pass but I still have diffferent techniques so i need at least an array with some connection to effecttechniques, but I would appriciate something not crazy like dictionary. I could also create wrapper for Effect and EffectTechnique, but there must be some normal solution.

• Texture not drawing on cubes

  I can draw the cubes fine but they are just solid black besides the occasional lighting that goes on. TextureEnabled is set to true in my main draw method. My texture is also loading fine. public Cube(GraphicsDevice graphicsDevice, Vector3 Position, Texture2D Texture) { device = graphicsDevice; texture = Texture; cubePosition = Position; effect = new BasicEffect(device); } The constructor seems fine too. Could this be caused by the Vector2's of my VertexPositionNormalTexture? Even if they were out of order something should still be drawn other than a black cube

• Long running calculation on background thread

  In my Cocos2D game for iOS I have a relatively long running calculation that happens at a fairly regular interval (every 1-2 seconds). I'd like to run the calculation on a background thread so the main thread can keep the animation smooth. The calculation is done on a grid. Average grid size is about 100x100 where each cell stores an integer. Should I copy this grid when I pass it to the background thread? Or can I pass a reference and just make sure I don't write to the grid from the main thread before the background thread is done? Copying seems a bit wasteful but passing a reference seems risky. So I thought I'd ask.

  The idea is to take old games without modifying them, but have the graphics card apply a series of filters to their output before sending them to the monitor. A very crude example would be to take a game that has a resolution of 640x480 and do: Increase the resolution to 1280x960 Apply a blur (low pass filter) Apply a sharpen (1 + high pass filter) These steps may not necessarily be the best to improve the visuals of an old game, but there are a lot of techniques that are well-known in image processing for this purpose. The question is, do the (NVidia) graphics cards give the ability to load a program that modifies the screen before sending it to the monitor? If so, how are they called and what terminology should I use to search? I would be comfortable with doing the programming myself if this ability is part of a library. Also, would the solution be different between Windows and Linux? If so, either is fine, since most of the games are probably runnable by wine.
