  • Can't send emails through sendmail, error occured

    Hi, I have sendmail MTA and i use pear:Mail class to send mails through remote sendmail server. Everything was fine till yesterday. Probably nothing changes was made in configs. Packets are deliverd to sendmail server i can see it in tcpdump, but there is smaller packets than on other server which sends emails. Could you tell me how can i check what is wrong with that? D.S.

  • Linux/Unix in Windows

    Hi, What would be the best way to get the full-blown Unix/Linux bash inside Windows? I don't mean the Virtual Machine, but rather only the terminal with mounted NTFS drives. This way I could use the power of Unix/Linux still being on Windows. The things I want to be able to do from the terminal: Package management (apt-get in Debian). SSH. File operations (including grub and similar). Run a web server (Apache, nginx) for testing purposes. Easy to use: start terminal - Linux is on, end terminal - Linux is shut down. Would be nice to be able to copy-paste from Windows into Terminal and vice versa. This really feels like a separate OS and I realize that VM would, probably, be the best thing. But I guess it should be possible to have a lighter installation. THE NOTE: I cannot just use Linux because of I still need to do development on Windows. Also I am a Linux noobie - just getting started with it so sorry if asking something obvious/stupid. Thanks, Dmitriy.

    From my (Debain) Desktop machine, I am trying to ssh into a Debian Server with ssh -X remote-ip After logging into the remote host, I get: /usr/bin/X11/xauth: creating new authority file /root/.Xauthority /usr/bin/X11/xauth: (stdin):1: bad display name "unix:10.0" in "remove" command /usr/bin/X11/xauth: (stdin):2: bad display name "unix:10.0" in "add" command And the X Forwarding doesn't work. From my Desktop I can ssh -X into other Debian servers and it works fine. I found a lot of threads discussing similar issues on google, but they all seem to fade out without a solution, and the simple things suggested there like exporting DISPLAY or setting xhost + don't seem to make a difference.

  • What should I be doing while I wait for a progress bar?

    So I am sitting here waiting for a progress bar to run (20 mins or so), and was wondering how best to use my time as a SysAdmin. I debated not posting this question briefly, as this could get flagged as subjective, but I think it's an important question, and a question that can be legitimately answered (per the FAQ) I know this something a lot of sys admins deal with, especially if they are client-based I would venture to guess. There is a lot of material out there about how to multi task, but SysAdmin work is unique in this area as well. I could switch over to another project, but I could get wrapped up in that, and forget about the original project I was working on, and that's hard if you are billing a client for your time, both for tracking your time, as well as being fair to that client. I could check ServerFault, but that isn't directly work related, I could sort my email, so on and so forth. What do you do, or what should I do when I have time waiting for a progress bar? Thanks!     I need help with my browsers. In Windows 7 Basic I have 2 browsers installed: Internet Explorer 8 and Google Chrome. When I try to open pages which are associated with Microsoft (like Live and others), my browser crashes; Internet Explorer 8 crashes too. But Opera (I've installed it later) works fine with those pages. P.S. I tried to scan my PC for trojans and viruses, but it's clean.

    I have a strange error in Windows 7 when I want to execute/open a file inside ZIP archive. I have two files: File1.dwg File2.dwg The archive is not corrupted ( I checked with 7zip utility ) When I double click on the any file inside ZIP (I opened ZIP with Windows Explorer), the error occured: Ok. If I open zip file with 7-zip or WinRAR every file could be opened(executed) without error and the AutoCAD is opened to see the dwg content. Why in Windows ZIP ?   • Legacy VB6 application under Win7 SQL error

    We have a rather unfortunate legacy application at work, written originally in VB6 it predates anybody in our IT department by at least 5 years. We have a contracted developer for ongoing maintenance and where he can he rewrites sections over into .NET code (Not sure about his techniques here, this is a side job for his regular work as an IBM engineer) the application works fine (such as it is) under windows XP. We have only a couple of Windows 7 machines mainly for testing and this application seems to run into a wall. Things like the background not loading and SQL errors. This is even running under administrator. Running an SQL trace from the ODBC control panel shows several interesting things. It makes a connection to the database successfully initially where it runs a query to determine if it is running the correct version. The only thing that is different in this particular scenario though is Windows 7, I know the connection string is fine since it works on the XP machines. The VB components are supposed to be still functional under Win7. My computer is running 32 bit win7 and my VP is running Win7 64 bit and both have the same problem so that can be ruled out. I have already tried reinstalling the SQL Native Client and the VB runtime as well as the application in question. Hopefully I can find a solution and not have to resort to using the XP VM.

  • How to debug xsane "no devices available" error on 64 bit Ubuntu 10.04

    I have a Brother MFC-J615W printer/scanner and I wish to use the scanning feature across a network with a computer running 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04. I have installed the drivers from the Brother website and followed all of the instructions, and printing works fine, but xsane (installed from repositories) produces a popup with the message "no devices available" on startup. I recently had success with a similar approach when installing drivers for a Brother MFC-495CW on 32-bit Unbuntu 9.10, so I am aware of issues such as requiring root access if the driver permissions are not set correctly, but running xsane as root does not solve this problem. Are there any tools available to debug this problem further or does anyone have advice on how to proceed?

  • Should I be running my scheduled backups as SYSTEM or as the our domain admin?

    I have a daily backup which is scheduled through the Task Scheduler. It failed with a strange error code last night, but I was able to search and find a blog post with how to avoid the error in the future. However, one of his recommendations was to run the backups as the Administrator user of the domain. Since all of the files being backed up are local to this system, should I continue to have the backups run as SYSTEM? Or is it actually better to run it as a different user? I have been running these backups for well over a year now and have only had a handful of failures, but ironically when it does fail, the error code means it was a permissions issue (or so I read, this code seems to be undocumented by Microsoft). Thanks in advance for any insight into this. Might as well post the error code here too, in case anyone would like to share their insight on this as well, but I rarely ever get this error, so I don't care too much about it: 4294967294

  • HTTP 400 error for all websites

    A couple of days ago, I started getting HTTP 400 responses from all websites. Nothing will go across port 80. However, everything works if I connect to VPN. The weird thing is, without VPN, other things still work; such as IM and anything else that doesn’t use port 80. Pinging also works. I haven’t noticed this behavior on any other computer on my network. The kicker is, if I log on as a local admin, everything works fine!!! I haven’t installed anything in the last couple weeks and I don’t remember changing any configuration. I ran Forefront and HouseCall and neither found any problems.

    We have a dedicated server with software RAID1 and one of the disk failed recently. The disk was replaced but after rebuilding the array and rebooting the server freezes with a Kernel Panic message No filesystem could mount root, tried: reiserfs ext3 ext2 cramfs msdos vfat iso9660 romfs fuseblk xfs Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(9,1) The filesystem on both disks is ext4. It seems the kernel can't load ext4 support. Is there any way to add ext4 support or do I need to recompile a new kernel again ? Interesting point that before disk replacement all was fine.   • Dualbooting Win7 and Gentoo, error

    Hello I'm trying to setup a dualboot with Gentoo Linux and Windows 7. Heres my partitions: /dev/sda1 /boot partition, ext2 /dev/sda2 win7 partition, ntfs /dev/sda3 swap partition, linux swap /dev/sda4 root partition, btrfs Using Grub, I can boot into Gentoo, but when I'm choosing to boot Windows 7, nothing happens. It just writes the Grub options for that choice, and then it hangs. grub.conf: default 0 timeout 30 title Gentoo root (hd0,0) kernel /boot/kernel-x86_64-2.6.31 root=/dev/sda4 title Windows rootnoverify (hd0,1) makeactive chainloader +1 Any ideas? Help will be much appreciated!

  • Microsoft Excel Error

    I am working with a user that has Office 2007 installed. When they open excel with a blank workbook and then they try to close excel without having done anything, it gets hung for about a minute or two and then gives the warning message: "Microsoft Office Excel is waiting on another application to complete an OLE action." Has anyone ever seen this happen before? If so can you please help me figure out how to resolve this. It doesn't matter what excel file they open or if it is a blank/new workbook. Please Help.

  • Why can't I open file with doubleklick after I moved the application that opens it on windows?

    I am on windows server 2003, but I guess it is the same on windows xp. I moved some movable applications (usually people create them for usb sticks) to locations like c:\bin\app1\app1.exe. The old location was c:\programs\app1\app1.exe app1.exe can open files of type *.ap1 When I rightclick file.ap1 and choose open with ... the Open with dialog appears. But it is not working how I expect in this situation. I can choose c:\bin\app1\app1.exe with the "Browse" button, but: app1.exe will not appear in the dialog where I just choosed it in the programs list, like I am used to it after clicking OK on it in the browse dialog. app1.exe will not open it when I click ok in the "Open with" dialog, the application that was assigned until then will still open it What could be the reason? my account is member of the administrators group I just changed the permissions of the folder c:\bin\app1\ and made sure that the group "Administrators" has all rights. I also inherited this manually to all subfodlers and subfiles. I also tried to move the application (with the whole folder) to "c:\program files\app1\app1.exe
