  • Create an alias in Windows XP

    Back in school, I used to have a .login file along the lines of alias ll = ls -l alias dir = ls -Fhl alias web = cd ~/public/public_www/development ... I'd like to do that sort of thing with my XP box here at work, but most of the resources I've found online seem fairly complicated and heavy-duty. Is there a way to do this that doesn't involve mucking about in the registry or running a large batch file? EDIT: My original reason for asking this was that I only need the command line for one command in one specific folder, and I wanted to be able to get to that folder quickly when I launched the command line. But the accepted answer for this question is so good that I decided to ask about my original issue as a separate question here.

  • Cobalt Qube 3 Unresponsive

    I recently bought a used Cobalt Qube 3 server off of eBay. The seller listed it as working before it was shipped. After starting it up for the first time, the "Cobalt Networks" logo scrolled across the LCD screen (this is normal), but then it stayed there. It will not go away, and the server will not respond to any of the buttons besides turning it off. I read the manual, and it does not say anything about this normally occurring. If necessary, could anyone walk me through or provide links to a reset tutorial? I have the OS Restore CD. Please help? I'm not sure why my question is being downvoted but if you need any more information please comment.

    Is there a way for me to review cpu or memory usage on my ubuntu linux server? I've noticed my server (lamp set up) being slow at times, but by the time I log in as root and run a PS command, everything may have returned to normal. It would be great to review a log of what resources different parts of the server consumed.

  • IIS7 Binary Stream Error

    I'm struggling to understand the problem I'm seeing so please accept my apology if the question is vague. I'm running a classic asp app in IIS7 and everything seems to work fine except for one issue that has me stumped. Basically, files can be downloaded from the server which is done using the sendBinary method of Persits ASP Upload component. This component works fine for uploading etc it's just the downloading I have a problem. The strange thing is, I cannot have a pure asp page that serves the binary file. Everything works fine in II6, but in II7 there is a strange problem.   • IIS 7 AppPool logs an error after recycle due to inactivity

    We have Windows 2008 RS Server running IIS hosting an ASP.NET site. This morning there was a weird sequence. First a notice that the AppPool was being recycled due to inactivity: "A worker process with process id of '6896' serving application pool 'xxxx' was shutdown due to inactivity. Application Pool timeout configuration was set to 20 minutes. A new worker process will be started when needed." This makes sense and jibes with out timeout settings, but 30 seconds later we see: "A process serving application pool 'xxxx' terminated unexpectedly. The process id was '6896'. The process exit code was '0xc0000005'." I found an older KB article that explains a condition where this might happend on IIS6 due to permission issues, but am curious what might cause this on IIS7.5, especially since we are not seeing it regularly.

  • Why is the latency on one LVM volume consistently higher?

    I've got a server with LVM over RAID1. One of the volumes has a consistently higher IO latency (as measured by the diskstats_latency munin plugin) than the other volumes from the same group. As you can see, the dark orange /root volume has consistently high IO latency. Actually ten times the average latency of the physical devices. It also has the highest Min and Max values. My main concern are not the peaks, which occur under high load, but the constant load on (semi-)idle. The server is running Debian Squeeze with the VServer kernel and has four VServer containers and one KVM guest. I'm looking for ways to fix - or at least understand - this situation.   • Excel 2002 disappears with no error message

    Excel 2002 closes about 30 seconds after I open it. No further action has to be taken; I open the program, wait a little while, and the window and process just disappears. I'm running Windows XP SP2 with Office 2002 Pro installed. Recently, Outlook 2007 was added to the computer (previously not installed at all.) Word 2002 works fine. Excel 2002 also works fine on another computer with a similar configuration. Things I've already checked for or tried: Verified that no add-ins are enabled. Repairing the installation. Uninstalling and reinstalling. Rename %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Excel I'm guessing that it is trying to load a component that doesn't exist and failing, but I don't know how to proceed. Suggestions welcome. Thank you!

  • Importing Outlook 2007 rules error

    I'm trying to move an Outlook 2007 account (POP3, no Exchange) to a new machine and I'm having trouble importing the rules from the old machine to the new one. Here is the deal, I imported the .pst file on the new machine but when I try to import the rules, every single one of them brakes. The folders and sub-folders hierarchy is preserved upon the import of the .pst but the rules don't point to the right folder in the respective rule. Instead it points to "the specified folder". Same OS (Windows XP), same mail client (Outlook 2007) and the .psf file is about 8 GB. Any help i greatly appreciated.

  • Why is my mono/XSP site loading slow?

    I have two sites on the same server. One is loading perfectly and incredibly fast. The other is an equally complex site except a bit less javascript and 0 images. Its taking several seconds to load and there is a 1 in 3 chance that i get a Http500 error.   • How can I allow anonymous access to OTRS FAQ area?

    I have been searching for this for quite some time now. I am using OTRS 2.4.7 and installed the FAQ package version 1.6.5. Everything seems to work fine. When I am logged in, I can create articles and other users have the ability to browse the articles. I want to be able to allow access to any anonymous non-user to be able to read these articles.   • Decrypting EFS w/o altering timestamp - possible?

    Hi, I'd like to decrypt some EFS-encrypted files, but I do not know how to do that without altering the timestamp. When encrypting/decrypting files, the modified-time is set to the current time. I'd like to preserve the original timestamp, as the files have not really changed. Is this possible? Solutions i dont think work copy to/from FAT (timestamp resolution differs) copy to from Samba share (same) programmatically copy original timestamp and reapply after decryption (possible, but need to handle decryption time which may vary)

  • mod_access for lighttpd causes a 403 error for all POST requests

    I have found on my debian server that running the lighttpd module mod_access is causing the server to response with a 403 to all POST requests. It's very odd as I have two servers, one is running as I'd expect and the other keeps returning these 403's. They are running identical configs for lighttpd and php. My lighttpd.conf is: https://gist.github.com/4269500 There is also one other custom conf: https://gist.github.com/4269508 I've opened up the servers for requests until I get this fixed, the server that works is http://mercury.isitup.org/ and the one that fails is http://venus.isitup.org/. After working out that disabling mod_access resolves the problem I greped all my lighttpd configs for uses of it (docs). Disabling each line I found didn't help, leading me to think this is perhaps some default behaviour (or bug?)... Has anyone come across this before or know what configuration value I've got wrong?   • Error installing Windows7 64 bits on VirtualBox

    I am trying to set up Windows in Virtual Box, so I don't need to reboot in the rare occasion that I actually need it. The problem is, Virtual Box doesn't preform any errors when I insert the 32bit installation CD but when I try to use the 64bit installation; What!? I am already using the installation disc! I've checked my BIOS to see if I have SVM (AMD's version of VT) disabled and all I see is "Enabled" I have a K9N6PGM2-V2 motherboard A Triple Core AMD Athlon II A Nvdia NForce 430 integrated graphics card 4GB of RAM An 80GB IDE And a 1TB SATA I don't think the last three specifications matter but just in case XP I am pretty sure the CD isn't broken ( I am going to make sure in just a moment ), what could be the cause to this problem? Edit: The 64bit installation CD is not broken, but I found out when trying to install from the 32bit version that it's trying to upgrade, not preform a fresh install - Odd.

  • My website is infected, I restored a backup of the uninfected files, how long will it take to un-mark as dangerous?

    My website www.sagamountain.com was recently infected by a malware distributor (or at least I think it may have been). I have removed all external content, google ads, firefly chat, etc. I uploaded a backup from a few weeks ago, when there was no issue. I patched the SQL injection hole. Now, how long will it take to unmark it as dangerous? Where can I contact google? I am not sure if this is the right place to post it, but since it may have been a server issue I may as well. Can sites inject base64 code via a virus on the whole server, or is it only via sql injection? Thanks for the help, viruses freak me out. Is there an online virus scanner that can scan my page and tell me what is wrong?

    I'm wondering what's the best option for me if I want to move all my hosted websites (from a hosting company) to a server at my own home? Basically, the needs I have are: be able to host websites using PHP/ASP.NET (haven't really decided yet - both would be preferred!) enable FTP so I can create accounts for my family members to access the server for file handling SSH SSL - for secure connections (this is something you have to buy/apply for per domain, not sure if there are any server side settings that have to be made) be able to stream video remote desktop host home-brew applications that can run as services use either MySQl/SQLite/SQL for relational database storage What should I think of before I buy a server? What hardware will I need, what will limit my server? I basically want to learn networking better as I'm a software and web developer but haven't had the resources to acquire any serious toys until now. At the time of writing, most of my websites have 60 visits/day so I don't suspect them to be very demanding. Is there something I haven't thought of that I should have?   • CVS gives error files fail to update, but they are updated on the server

    We are using CVSNT on machine running Windows XP Pro. After using it for more than 5 years, today we have an issue with CVS. When we try to update a subdirectory in a repository, some of the files failed to update with message "Permission denied" and some files fail with the message "ABC.java is no longer in the repository". But when we login to the CVS machine itself and browse the subdirectory, we can see the files are there. We have checked the Windows folder permissions and they seem correct.

  • Why 64 bit OS can't run a 16 bit application?

    Why is it that a 32 bit OS that is installed on a 64 bit CPU can run old DOS 16 bit applications, but if you install a 64 bit OS it cant run those applications directly and need some sort of emulation (that doesn't always work perfectly)? To be more specific I have an Intel Core 2 Due (64bit) procesor, and I had Windows Xp and Windows 7 (both 32bit) installed and it could run old dos applications, but now that I have installed Windows 7 64 bit it can't run those same application anymore?

    I am running the following command booting a Debian live CD passing a host PCI device to the guest as a test and KVM errors out; kvm -m 512 -boot c -net none -hda /media/AA502592502565F3/debian.iso -device pci-assign,host=07:00.0 PCI region 1 at address 0xf7920000 has size 0x80, which is not a multiple of 4K. You might experience some performance hit due to that. No IOMMU found. Unable to assign device "(null)" kvm: -device pci-assign,host=07:00.0: Device 'pci-assign' could not be initialized lspci | grep 07 07:00.0 Ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3c905C-TX/TX-M [Tornado] (rev 74) I shoved an old spare NIC into my motherboard to test PCI pass through. I have searched the Internet with Goolge and found that errors relating to "No IOMMU found" often mean the PCI device is not supported by KVM. Does KVM have to support the device being "passed-through"? I though the point was to pass the device through and let the guest worry about it? Ultimately I want to pass-through a PCI random number generator, is this not going to be possible with KVM? Thank you.
