• What is the value of checking in failing unit tests?

  While there are ways of keeping unit tests from being executed, what is the value of checking in failing unit tests? I will use a simple example: Case Sensitivity. The current code is case sensitive. A valid input into the method is "Cat" and it would return an enum of Animal.Cat. However, the desired functionality of the method should not be case sensitive. So if the method described was passed "cat" it could possibly return something like Animal.Null instead of Animal.Cat and the unit test would fail. Though a simple code change would make this work, a more complex issue may take weeks to fix, but identifying the bug with a unit test could be a less complex task. The application currently being analyzed has 4 years of code that "works". However, recent discussions regarding unit tests have found flaws in the code. Some just need explicit implementation documentation (ex. case sensitive or not), or code that does not execute the bug based on how it is currently called. But unit tests can be created executing specific scenarios that will cause the bug to be seen and are valid inputs. What is the value of checking in unit tests that exercise the bug until someone can get around to fixing the code? Should this unit test be flagged with ignore, priority, category etc, to determine whether a build was successful based on tests executed? Eventually the unit test should be created to execute the code once someone fixes it. On one hand it shows that identified bugs have not been fixed. On the other, there could be hundreds of failed unit tests showing up in the logs and weeding through the ones that should fail vs. failures due to a code check-in would be difficult to find.

  I've been trying for a long time to get our company's mail server send mail that will get accepted by the GMail spam filter. I have managed making it work for Yahoo Mail and Hotmail, sadly GMail is still marking our mails as spam. I have configured DKIM, SPF, DMARC and verified our mail server IP address against blacklists. I also have pasted here the headers GMail gets when we send a mail. • Rename file in XP, only select file name, but show file extension.

  So if I have a file called: test.txt and I want to rename it, there are two options (depending on the Show already known file extension option): 1) ON: it selects everything (test.txt), meaning I have to manually select "test" and replace it with the new filename. (which is irritating) 2) OFF: Only "test" is editable (and visible). Problem is that I frequently need to change the file extension of a file, but if the option is turned on, it's a pain to change the file name. I know that in Win7 it does something smart: It only selects the file name when you press rename[F2], but also lets you edit the file extension. Is there a way to accomplish this?

So basically, if I have these lines: This is not a test This is a test Maybe a test Definitely not a test And I run the script with 'not', I need to entirely delete lines 1 and 4. • What actions does Ubuntu trigger when battery is low?

  When the battery is low, the screen gets dimmed after a few seconds already. This appears to be some special power-saving mode, and might be related to the time in org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power.time-low (1200 seconds (20 minutes) the default). While this seems to get triggered by gnome-settings-daemon, I wonder what else Ubuntu does when this happens (e.g. via DBus listeners), or other event listeners that look for a "low battery" state. It seems like something in this regard causes Ubuntu / X / the system to behave more sluggish afterwards (when the laptop is on AC again), and I would like to look into what might be causing this. I could not find anything related via dconf-editor, e.g. in org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power. It appears to get setup via idle_configure in plugins/power/gsd-power-manager.c, but it's probably something more related to something that listens on the DBus interface, which gets notified via e.g.: if (!g_dbus_connection_emit_signal (manager->priv->connection, NULL, GSD_POWER_DBUS_PATH, "org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties", "PropertiesChanged", props_changed, &error)) I could imagine that some "power saving" property gets set, but not unset when AC is available anymore and/or the battery is not low anymore. I have looked at the CPU governor setting (/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor), but it was ondemand. I am using gnome-settings-daemon with awesomeWM on Ubuntu 14.04. gnome-settings-daemon=3.8.6.1-0ubuntu11.1 I've also compared gsd's plugins/power/gsd-power-manager.c with the one from Debian's gnome-settings-daemon-3.12.1, but could not find anything obvious that might have been fixed/changed in this regard. I have managed to trigger the gnome-power-manager's gnome-settings plugin (which dims the screen etc), by patching upower and use it after killing the system's upower daemon. (note that it's probably only energy that is being used by gpm to calculate it by itself). It does not make the system become sluggish.. • Exchange 2010 update timezone of all calendar items

  We are currently operating Exchange 2010 server with Outlook 2010 clients on a ship. We have just changed timezones for the first time in quite a while today. Is there any way to rebase all the calendars and/or update all the calendar items to the new timezone at the same time? I have looked at the following tools already. Microsoft Exchange Calendar Update Configuration Tool - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=6266 (Doesn't support exchange 2010) Time Zone Data Update Tool for Microsoft Office Outlook - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17291 The Time Zone Data Update Tool for Microsoft Office Outlook does work for individual users, but has some serious downsides. Including each user needs to run it (approx 400 users), and also it only seems to work on the default account in Outlook 2010, a lot of our users have role accounts as well that we would need to run the tool on. The only way I can find to get this tool to run on the role accounts is to make the role account the default account in outlook, and that in itself is quiet an involved process especially if you have 2 or 3 role accounts. So is there a way to just change all calendar items on our Exchange server to a different timezone in one go? We are a little unique in terms of the whole organisation can change timezones over night, meeting rooms and all, but surely a product as advanced as Exchange 2010 allows us to do what we need.

• How to keep the trunk stable when tests take a long time?

  We have three sets of test suites: A "small" suite, taking only a couple of hours to run A "medium" suite that takes multiple hours, usually ran every night (nightly) A "large" suite that takes a week+ to run We also have a bunch of shorter test suites, but I'm not focusing on them here. The current methodology is to run the small suite before each commit to the trunk. Then, the medium suite runs every night, and if in the morning it turned out it failed, we try to isolate which of yesterday's commits was to blame, rollback that commit and retry the tests. A similar process, only at a weekly instead of nightly frequency, is done for the large suite. Unfortunately, the medium suite does fail pretty frequently. That means that the trunk is often unstable, which is extremely annoying when you want to make modifications and test them. It's annoying because when I check out from the trunk, I cannot know for certain it's stable, and if a test fails I cannot know for certain if it's my fault or not. My question is, is there some known methodology for handling these kinds of situations in a way which will leave the trunk always in top shape? e.g. "commit into a special precommit branch which will then periodically update the trunk every time the nightly passes". And does it matter if it's a centralized source control system like SVN or a distributed one like git? By the way I am a junior developer with a limited ability to change things, I'm just trying to understand if there's a way to handle this pain I am experiencing.

So I want to install the "test drive" again, but it won't let me. So far I uninstalled the old copy, signed up under a different account, and downloaded a new version. I know there has to be application data somewhere, but I am a PC person and don't know where to look in the Apple. HELP! Thanks. They have a working beta product after 10 or so 2 week sprints and already had UI’s that had changed several times as they went through iterations of their UI. As a result, the QA team was falling behind with automated tests and I was tasked to help them catch up and expand their tests. The project is a website. I heard many complaints about how hard it is to work with CodedUI (writing our own code, not relying on the recorder as we wanted re-usable and more maintainable code) then it took me 4+ hours to fix one issue. It was hard to traverse the key and debugging the objects with breakpoints… I said out loud “there has to be a better way or a framework the uses jQuery to run through the tests.” Plus it seemed really slow (wait… finding the object … wait… start putting in text…). Plus some tests would randomly fail on the test agents (using the test settings and an automated build, they are run on VMs using Microsoft test agents). Enough complaining. Selenium to the rescue (mostly). The lead QA guy decided to try it out and we haven’t turned back. We are now running tests in Chrome and Firefox and they run a lot faster. We had IE running to, but some of the tests were running fine locally, but hanging on the test agents. I’ll add some hints and lessons learned in a later post.

• Websphere 7: Getting 'Internal Server Error' when accessing JSPs. Servlets ok

  I have just installed WS 7 on our stage server. The test server was done some months ago. I have deployed the same applications to stage as on test. One application is causing me problems. I call the login servlet but the result is an 'Internal Server Error' message. From my logs I can see that the servlet processed the log in successfully and redirects to a JSP. That is the last message. I can find no further info in any of the other standard out/err logs. I have tried creating a simple JSP containing only HTML - same error. If I rename the file to test.html, it displays correctly. The plugin configuration appears to be identical with the one on the test server (where everything works) Ideas anyone?

• Why are my Windows 7 updates continuously failing?

  I'm an advanced level user here with an odd issue. I have two Windows Updates that are failing to install, every single time. I'm getting a mysterious "Code 1" error on both updates, an error for which I'm having difficulty finding a solution. The updates in question are: Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538243) System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [May 2011] Because these updates are failing, the Shut Down button in my start menu always has the shield icon next to it, indicating that "new" updates will be installed on shut down.   I managed to install node.js successfully on my machine but when invoking make test I get an error message: python tools/test.py --mode=release simple === release test-net-pingpong === Path: simple/test-net-pingpong server listening on 20989 localhost server listening on 20988 undefined Error: EAFNOSUPPORT, Address family not supported by protocol at net:1041:19 at dns:105:7 at EventEmitter._tickCallback (node.js:48:25) at node.js:176:9 I found out that EAFNOSUPPORT means that the OS does not support a particular protocol and a program tries to use it. So from what I can deduce my Debian does not have support for dns? Any help is appreciated!

• Testing a codebase with sequential cohesion

  I've this really simple program written in C with ncurses that's basically a front-end to sqlite3. I would like to implement TDD to continue the development and have found a nice C unit framework for this. However I'm totally stuck on how to implement it. Take this case for example: A user types a letter 'l' that is captured by ncurses getch(), and then an sqlite3 query is run that for every row calls a callback function. This callback function prints stuff to the screen via ncurses. So the obvious way to fully test this is to simulate a keyboard and a terminal and make sure that the output is the expected. However this sounds too complicated. I was thinking about adding an abstraction layer between the database and the UI so that the callback function will populate a list of entries and that list will later be printed. In that case I would be able to check if that list contains the expected values. However, why would I struggle with a data structure and lists in my program when sqlite3 already does this? For example, if the user wants to see the list sorted in some other way, it would be expensive to throw away the list and repopulate it. I would need to sort the list, but why should I implement sorting when sqlite3 already has that? Using my orginal design I could just do an other query sorted differently. Previously I've only done TDD with command line applications, and there it's really easy to just compare the output with what I'm expected. An other way would be to add CLI interface to the program and wrap a test program around the CLI to test everything. (The way git.git does with it's test-framework). So the question is, how to add testing to a tightly integrated database/UI.

I have been into asp.net web development for approximately 1.5 years and I want to study something that really improves "Design and Development Skills" in Web Development in general and asp.net to be specific which i can put to use and build upon that. Please suggest a book that teaches professional Asp.Net design and development skills and approaches to quality development by taking through practice design scenarios and their solutions and through various case studies that involve design problems and their implemented solutions. Edit: I have found the Micorosoft training kits to be fairly interesting and helpful as these tend to increase knowledge. I have utilized a lot of things after getting a good explanation of things from the training kits. However, as far as Microsoft Training Kit for 70-564 is concerned, there are not a lot of good reviews about it. What i have read and searched on the net , the reviews on amazon and various forums, stack-exchange and experts-exchange, were more inclined to the conclusion that "Microsoft Training Kit for Exam 70-564 is not good. Its is not good as compared to other kits from Microsoft, like as compared to the training kit of Exam 70-562 or others." So i was looking for a proper book containing examples from practical world scenarios and case studies from which i can not only learn but also master the skills before wasting money of Microsoft Training Kit for Exam 70-564. Waiting for experts to provide a suitable advice.

• Shuttle FB51 mobo does not boot with external USB drive attached [closed]

  I am repurposing an old Alienware desktop as a home media server. The PC is based on the Shuttle FB51 motherboard. The BIOS is a Phoenix Version 6.00 PG, release date 12/16/2002. I have loaded Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on the internal hard drive. I am using a Western Digital WD Elements 1.5 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive for media storage. When the external drive is plugged in and the PC is powered on, it freezes very early in the BIOS self-test, even before it begins the memory test. If I unplug the drive, the self-test proceeds without further problems. I can plug the USB drive back in when the self-test is complete, and Ubuntu will boot and find the external drive normally. I've tried several changes to the BIOS setup without finding a cure for the boot issue. Any assistance gratefully accepted. JGB

• Should developers be involved in testing phases?

  Hi, we are using a classical V-shaped development process. We then have requirements, architecture, design, implementation, integration tests, system tests and acceptance. Testers are preparing test cases during the first phases of the project. The issue is that, due to resources issues (*), test phases are too long and are often shortened due to time constraints (you know project managers... ;)). So my question is simple: should developers be involved in the tests phases and isn't it too 'dangerous'. I'm afraid it will give the project managers a false feeling of better quality as the work has been done but would the added man.days be of any value? I'm not really confident of developers doing tests (no offense here but we all know it's quite hard to break in a few clicks what you have made in severals days). Thanks for sharing your thoughts. (*) For obscure reasons, increasing the number of testers is not an option as of today. But if I send the mail through commandline using mailx command from the same server , the message is going through...   If I would like a client to use HIS DNS for a 3rd level domain name (ie test.domain.com), how would I be able to do that? So I have domain servers ns1.domain.com + ns2.domain.com for domain.com but now I want ns1.rabbit.com and ns2.rabbit.com for test.domain.com. How can this be done? I know it's possible because I saw it at some providers. Then, as a second part (and related) part; how to set up a WHOIS for that test.domain.com? So that, if you query my server for the information about test.domain.com, it'll be different than the info on domain.com? Thanks

• DNS record reappears after having been deleted

  I've got a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 acting as a domain controller for a small network. It provides DHCP and DNS among a few other services. It's only got a single NIC, but it's configured with two IP addresses. I want it's name to resolve to one of the two IP addresses assigned to its NIC. I've unchecked "Register this connection's addresses in DNS" under the "Advanced TCP/IP Settings". Currently we've got two distinct DNS Host (A) records for this domain controller: dc-001 - 10.0.0.1 dc-001 - 10.0.100.1 I've deleted the first entry but it continues to reappear in my dnsmgmt snap-in. Unfortunately I'm not a Microsoft systems administrator by trade. Does anyone familiar with Microsoft server environments know why a deleted Host (A) record would reappear?
