• How do i impress employers with my resume?

  I built a entire website from scratch in 10days which looks and feels professional with the site being unique. The site has features like logging in, sending activation emails, tag/content search (lucence.net), syntax highlighting (prettify) and a diff (one of the js diffs), markup for comments all on this site and autocomplete in a textbox (remember, 10days). I wrote i have 5+ years of C# experience (i could lie and say more but smart employers will know its only 8 years old and 1.1 is very different from what we use now). I had employers REPEATEDLY say they are looking for someone who has more C# experience... wtf. Maybe they don't read my CV, maybe they dont believe it or ignore me because i am not yet a graduate. I laughed when i first read Steve Yegge The Five Essential Phone Screen Questions as i knew all of that (although i still never used graph datastruct nor know much about it). I'm pretty sure competency wise i can do the job. I am also positive no one noticed i have markup, a diff, autocomplete nor email activation/forget password (i offer a test user account). So maybe my site/example work isnt impressive bc you dont realize what is in it. In short i dont think they read my CV or notice my site. How do i impress employers? PS: The problem is i dont get to the interview. I had one and ruined it by speaking too technical to the PM because i was nervous. The other 25+ jobs either didnt contact me or was kind enough to send a rejection email.

• jQuery: How to stop propagation of a bound function not the entire event?

  I have a click function bound to many elements. It is possible that sometimes these elements may sit within one another. So, the click event is bound to a child and also bound to its parent. The method is specific to the element clicked. Naturally, because of event bubbling, the child's event is fired first, and then the parents. I cannot have them both called at the same time because the parents event overwrites the event of the child. So I could use event.stopPropagation() so only the first element clicked receives the event. The problem is that there are other click events also attached to the element, for example, I am using jQuery's draggable on these elements. If I stop the propagation of the click event, then draggable doesn't work, and the following click events are not called. So my question is: Is there a way to stop the event bubbling of the method the event will call and not the entire event?

• How do I make an About window the front-most window in a Cocoa application with no UI?

  I'm building a Cocoa application that runs as an item in the status bar. This application has an About window and an item to activate that about window, using the standard Cocoa mechanism for doing so (-[NSApplication orderFrontStandardAboutPanel:]). Naturally this is all hooked up automagically. It works great except for one thing: unlike most About windows, it shows up underneath all other windows, rather than on top. I believe this is because the application does not have a UI, so all its windows are automatically beneath other windows. Is there a way I can hook into the NSApplication mechanism for displaying the About window so I can send it to the front? I've poked around in the docs for NSApplication, but there's no way to get a reference to the About window that I can see so that I can make it appear on top.

  I have a ~300.000 row table; which includes technical terms; queried using PHP and MySQL + FULLTEXT indexes. But when I searching a wrong typed term; for example "hyperpext"; naturally giving no results. I need to "compansate" little writing errors and getting nearest record from database. How I can accomplish such feaure? I know (actually, learned today) about Levenshtein distance, Soundex and Metaphone algorithms but currently not having a solid idea to implement this to querying against database. Best regards. • Custom iterator for dictionary?

  Hi folks, in my C#-Application, I have a Dictionary object. When iterating over the object using foreach, I naturally get each element of the dictionary. But I want only certain elements to be iterated, depending on the value of a property of MyValue. class MyValue { public bool AmIIncludedInTheIteration { get; set; } ... } Whenever AmIIncludedInTheIteration is false, the item shall not be returned by foreach. I understand that I need to implement my own iterator and override the Dictionary-Iterator somewhere. Can anyone here give me a short HowTo? Thanks in advance, Frank

• Full stack framework for Java

  Hello everyone, I'm looking for a full stack framework (from persistency to view generation (CRUD)) for Java. I don't have experience with Rails style frameworks, like Grails, but I worked a lot with Hibernate, Struts, Spring ... I prefer a framework that let you naturally modify the business domain design with the less effort ( i.e. writing the sql querys to modify the tables and constrains, change the view pages, etc ... ). I was looking a bit about this topic, I saw Naked Objects for example but its development has stopped. So, I want to hear about your experience. Thanks in advance.

• Poll on Entity Framework 4 &ndash; one year on

  12 months back (today is March 15th 2010) on the 16th of  March 2009 I created a poll on Entity Framework v1 – the marmite of ORMs? A quick poll…. Entity Framework v1 was getting a mixed reception at the time – I met developers who genuinely hated it and I met developers who were loving the productivity improvements they were seeing. There were definitely issues with v1, too many IMHO. Which is why the product team placed a huge effort on listening to the community to drive the feature set for v2 (which ultimately was named Entity Framework 4 as it ships with .NET 4). I think overall the team have done a great job. It isn’t perfect in .NET 4 (which is why the team are busy on post .NET 4 improvements) but I would happily use it and recommend it for a wide variety of projects – much wider than I would have with v1. I am speaking on EF 4 at www.devweek.com this Wednesday and I thought it would be fun to put a new version of the poll out and see how v4 is being received. Obviously the big difference is we have not yet shipped EF4 vs when I did the original poll on EF1. • Two Sessions All Humans Should Watch Right Now

  At conferences, I definitely prefer technical sessions over any other kind of session. That's partly because I want to walk away from a conference with new libraries and APIs to play with, such as the AT&T ARO tool that I've been blogging about over the past few days thanks to being introduced to it in a great session by Doug Sillars at Oredev, in Malmo, Sweden. I only say the above to set the scene. And the scene is that I avoid sessions that deal with "agile topics" or whatever that means. I mean those sessions where you're meant to reflect on some way you're developing nothing in particular and then come away with new ways of doing that. I avoid those. Not because I don't necessarily like those or think I have nothing to learn, both of which I don't (or do, depending on how you read double negatives), but because there are so many sessions to attend that I focus on those that actually give me more technical knowledge that I can do something with immediately. Having said all that, here's two absolutely wonderful sessions (and probably many more but I really liked these two) presented at Oredev over the last few days, one by JB Rainsberger and the other by Woody Zuill, both very nice people who I met for the first time during the last few days, and who aren't paying me to promote them, and who're still struggling to figure out how to say my name. Whether you're a developer or manager or whatever you are, take this on trust, and simply watch these screencasts, hey, at most you're going to lose two hours of your life that you would've spent doing something else: Speaking for myself, I'm going to be watching both these presentations again several times in my life, that's for sure.

• Service Catalogs for Database as a Service

  At the end of last month, I had the opportunity to present a speaking session at Oracle OpenWorld: Database as a Service: Creating a Database Cloud Service Catalog.  The session was well-attended which would have surprised me several months ago when I started researching this topic.  At that time, I thought of service catalogs as something trivial which could be explained in a few simple slides.  But while looking at all the different options and approaches available, I came to learn that designing a succinct and effective catalog is not a trivial task, and mistakes can lead to confusion and unintended side effects.  And when the room filled up, my new point of view was confirmed. In case you missed the session, or were able to attend but would like more details, I've posted a white paper that covers the topics from the session, and more.  We start with an overview of the components of a service catalog: And then look at several customer case studies of service catalogs for DBaaS.  Synthesizing those examples, we summarize the main options for defining the service categories and their levels.  We end with a template for defining Bronze | Silver | Gold service tiers for Oracle Database Services. • An MP3 parser to extract numbered frames?

  I am writing a streaming application for MP3 (CBR). It is all passthru, meaning I don't have to decode/encode, I just need to pass on the data as I see it come through. I want to be able to count the MP3 frames as they passthru (and some other stuff like throughput calculations). According to the MP3 frame header spec, the sync word appears to be 11 bits of 1s, however I notice (naturally) that the frame payload which I should safely assume to be binary and thus it is not odd at all to see 11 1s in sequence. My questions: Is there a Unix/Linux MP3 parser utility (dd-style) that can pull numbered frames from an MP3 file/pipe? Any perl wisdom here? How does one delineate an MP3 header block from any other binary payload data? and lastly: Is a constant bitrate (CBR) MP3 defined by payload bytes or are the header bytes included in the aggregate # of bytes/bits per any given timeslice? • Winform .Net 3.5 - Get path of ApplicationFolder for Office Add-In

  Greetings - I am writing an add-in for Expression Web 3 in VS2008 The solution has a Windows Installer setup project in which the ApplicationFolder is tagged to hold some ancillary files. I need to be able to access those files during the add-in's startup, but naturally the Application object as well as the AppDomain reference paths to Expression Web not to the Add-In. There is a tickle in the back of my head that the solution involves reflection but thats as far as I can get... has anyone dealt with this or have any suggestions? Thanks!

• Error 500 on template.render() with jinja2

  I am working on playing with some Python to create a webapp. At first I put the HTML in a string, using %s to fill certain elements. That all worked perfectly. Now I want to put the HTML in a template, so I followed this tutorial. My code looks like this (I deleted irrelevant code for this error): import codecs import cgi import os import jinja2 jinja_environment = jinja2.Environment(loader=jinja2.FileSystemLoader(os.path.join(os.path.dirname(__file__)))) class Rot13Handler(webapp2.RequestHandler): def get(self): template = jinja_environment.get_template('rot13.html') self.response.out.write(template.render({'text': ''})) When I replace just template.render({'text': ''}) a random string, the program works fine. I did add the latest jinja2 library to my app.yaml, and naturally my rot13.html does exist with the {{ text }} added. So could anyone please help me in the right direction? I don't know why it's going wrong.

• A good F# codebase to learn from

  Hi all, I've been teaching myself F# for a while now. I've read Programming F# by Chris Smith (great book) and I've written a few small scripts for getting the job done here and there. But IMO the best way to learn a new programming language—and more importantly, the idioms that come with it—is to read a good open source codebase written in that language. Naturally, writing code in that language is crucial, but in the beginning, you're basically struggling with your own ignorance about how things should be done. You could perform certain tasks one way or the other, but it takes experience to realize the flaws and virtues of each. Even after you've gotten a firm grasp of how things work, reading the code of people who have an even firmer one helps a great deal. Most would agree that the most insightful parts of any learn-a-programming-language book are the code examples, and reading a well-written open source codebase is the next level of that. So are there any out there for F#?

• Get a list of events owned by a facebook page

  Does anyone know how I can get a list of events owned (created) by a Facebook page? I seem to be able to use the "graph api" to generate a list of the events an entity is attending. I also looked at FQL, but it seems to require that the 'where' clause is an indexable field (and, naturally, the id is the only indexable field). For bonus points, we'd be able to do this without any authentication. (Though I'm resigned to the fact that I'm likely going to need at least a permanent access_token.) If anyone know how to do this I'd be eternally grateful.

• Is there a way to make XmlDocument parsing less strict

  I am making a program that will store its data in an XML file. When people write XML they can make subtle mistakes, like ending a comment with - so it looks like <!-- comment ---> or adding a </>inside an attribute. Naturally, the XML still can be read all right, but trying to input this text into XmlDocument will give a syntax error (and it wont be parsed). Is there a way to make XmlDocument less strict and make it ignore violations of the standard that do not make the document unparseable? For example, its clear that <!-- comment ---> is still a comment even though it contains - at the end which is against the standard specification).

• Dell Powerdge840 2.4GHz 64 bit quad core

  I am having an issue, where I have changed the boot order to cdrom and turned off hd boot all together and still my system is unable to detect ubuntu and claims, no boot device found. Some additional information: When this same cd is inserted and dell is booted into win 2003 server (which is what is installed on this machine), it detects the cd drive but not the cd at all (keeps asking me to insert disc) I have also created a bootable flash drive using LinuxLive USB creator and when this is selected in boot order again am told no boot device detected. I was speaking to dell and they suggested perhaps there are no drivers on the actual ubuntu installation for the hardware on this Dell and hence the failure of this dell to detect the ubuntu cd. Now, I don't know too much about computers, but this last bit confused me a bit. If the system detects the hardware (when it is booting it sees the cd rom and in bios it sees when the flash drive is connected), then shouldn't it be able to read what is on those drives? However, if there is some firmware or software install that needs to happen, could someone please tell me where to find the correct drivers for ubuntu and dell poweredge to work together? Shall I be installing the desktop version or the server edition, also, 32 bit or 63 bit? Thank you in advance.

• Python ctypes: loading DLL from from a relative path

  I have a Python module, wrapper.py, that wraps a C DLL. The DLL lies in the same folder as the module. Therefore, I use the following code to load it: myDll = ctypes.CDLL("MyCDLL.dll") This works if I execute wrapper.py from its own folder. If, however, I run it from elsewhere, ctypes goes looking for DLL in the current working directory and naturally fails. My question is, is there a way by which I can specify the DLL's path relative to the wrapper instead of the current working directory? This will enable me to ship the two together and allow the user to run/import the wrapper from anywhere.

• Seek first to understand, then to be understood

  One of the most important (and most difficult) lessons for a technical professional to learn is to not jump to the solution. Perhaps you’ve done this, or had it happen to you. As the person you’re “listening” to is speaking, your mind is performing a B-Tree lookup on possible solutions, and when the final node of the B-Tree in your mind is reached, you blurt out the “only” solution there is to the problem, whether they are done or not. There are two issues here – both of them fatal if you don’t factor them in. First, your B-Tree may not be complete, or correct. That of course leads to an incorrect response, which blows your credibility. People will not trust you if this happens often. The second danger is that the person may modify their entire problem with a single word or phrase. I once had a client explain a detailed problem to me – and I just KNEW the answer. Then they said at the end “well, that’s what it used to do, anyway. Now it doesn’t do that anymore.” Which of course negated my entire solution – happily I had kept my mouth shut until they finished. So practice listening, rather than waiting for your turn to speak. Let the person finish, let them get the concept out, give them your full attention. They’ll appreciate the courtesy, you’ll look more intelligent, and you both may find the right answer to the problem. • How do I find the previous/default value of a radio button in JS?

  I'm not sure if this is even possible, but I figured I'd ask before clubbing togehter an ugly solution. What I have is a group of radio buttons and I want to trigger a function if the radio button value is changed. For example say there are three buttons X Y and Z with Y default selected. If a user clicks on an unselected button (i.e. X or Z) then the function gets triggered but if he/she clicks on Y (which is already selected) nothing happens. Naturally the best solution would be to fire the function on an onchange event but IE6 doesn't fire onchange until the focus is no longer on the element which is not satisfactory. So is there a way to know what the previous value of the radio button was or at least what its default value is? I could easily create an array of default values and check against that but I'm trying to reduce the overhead. Please no jQuery suggestions ;)

• Excel Worksheet assignment in VB.Net doesn't compile

  I'm converting a VB6 application into VB.Net and having trouble with the basics. I start off with:- Dim xl As Excel.Application Dim xlsheet As Excel.Worksheet Dim xlwbook As Excel.Workbook xl = New Excel.Application xlwbook = xl.Workbooks.Open(my_data.file_name) xlsheet = xlwbook.Sheets(1) but the last line doesn't compile; it reports Option Strict On disallows implicit conversion from 'Object' to 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Worksheet' I can make this go away by replacing the line with xlsheet = CType(xlwbook.Sheets(1), Excel.Worksheet) but that does't look like the right thing to do to me. If the assignment is correct, I would have thought the object should naturally have the correct type. So: does anyone know what the correct thing I should be doing here?

• Is WinForms ListView in VirtualMode limited to 100,000,000 rows?

  I have some grid scenario with 500,000,000 rows I would like to display in ListView. If I artificially limit my ListView to display 100,000,000: _listView.VirtualListSize = _data.Count; if (_listView.VirtualListSize > 100000000) _listView.VirtualListSize = 100000000; Everything works fine (In VirtualMode naturally). When I change my code to: _listView.VirtualListSize = _data.Count; if (_listView.VirtualListSize > 100000001) _listView.VirtualListSize = 100000001; The ListView display an empty grid... Is this a Microsoft Bug? Where is this coming from? Is this a Win32 ListView limitation? Most importantly, why is this not documented?

• Hiding result sets from multiple selects in a stored procedure

  I have a stored procedure that retrieves SQL queries as text and executes the statements using sp_executesql. Each of the dynamic queries is a count query in that it only returns the number of records found (select COUNT(id) from...). I am looping through a set of SQL queries stored as text and building a table variable out of the results. At the end, I am selecting all the results from the table variable as the result set that I want returned from the stored procedure. However, when I execute the stored procedure, I am naturally getting multiple result sets (one for each of the dynamic queries and one for the final select.) Is there any way I can suppress the results of a select statement executed through sp_executesql? I have found answers that reference storing the results in a temp table, but I don't have control of the query text that I am running so I can't change it to select into anything. Please help. • Why are there two implementations of std::sort (with and without a comparator) rather than one implementation with a default template parameter?

  In my code I'm adopting a design strategy which is similar to some standard library algorithms in that the exact behavior can be customized by a function object. The simplest example is std::sort, where a function object can control how the comparison is made between objects. I notice that the Visual C++ provides two implementations of std::sort, which naturally involves code duplication. I would have imagined that it was instead possible to have only one implementation, and provide a default comparator (using operator< ) as a default template parameter. What is the rational behind two separate versions? Would my suggestion make the interface more complex in some way? Or result in confusing error messages when the object does not provide operator Thanks, David

• Are there libraries or techniques for collecting and weighing keywords from a block of text?

  I have a field in my database that can contain large blocks of text. I need to make this searchable but don't have the ability to use full text searching. Instead, on update, I want my business layer to process the block of text and extract keywords from it which I can save as searchable metadata. Ideally, these keywords could then be weighed based on the number of times they appear in the block of text. Naturally, words like "the", "and", "of", etc. should be discarded as they just add a lot of noise to the search. Are there tools or libraries in Python that can do this filtering or should I roll my own?
