  • Proper way to connect SATA and IDE Hard drives together?

    I have an old IDE hard drive that has a broken Windows install on it. It just won't boot up, and I've tried a variety of solutions. That's fine, I really just need a few files on the hard drive. I have a computer that uses a SATA connected hard drive. It's a working PC. I would like to connect the old IDE hard drive to that compute and basically browse through the file system, grab the files, and copy them to my existing computer. My problem is with my few attempts to connect the IDE drive I would get Boot Disk Failures and so forth. I guess it's trying to boot from the IDE but I'm not really sure. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

  • Office 2010 OCT Outlook Filepaths

    I'm playing around with customizing Office 2010 installs on my network, normally I just do a full manual install, but as the environment grows and the lazier I get its becoming a pain to do it manually every time. I've read up and downloaded the Office 2010 OCT tool and it looks relatively straight forward - with one exception - the Outlook Profile. I can 'get around it' by just leaving it all as default (or not enabling offline use) but I'd like to customise it slightly so that its all setup no matter who logs onto the PC. The only issue I have, and my question is: In the OCT - Outlook section What do you enter into the Path and Filename for the OST file and the Offline Address book seetings under Enable Offline Use section? I'm sweet with everything else - just that one section, and I think if I bugger that one it will kill the whole Outlook Profile?? It would need to go into each users unique filepath for their profile correct? I have a fair idea of what should be there but I'm struggling with the correct syntax. I know this is a stupid question....but its late in the day and my brain is fried ;) As usual - any and all help/assistance is appreciated ;)

    Is there some documentation on the various Windows 7 registry settings? Preferably from Microsoft or in some kind of Wiki? E.g. what settings exist for the Taskbar, Start Menu, Explorer, etc. I've found some 'tweak' sites but they usually only offer information for a few features and even that is mostly hidden in reg files and poorly documented.

Is there any site that you know wherein I could download custom themes for windows 7. Themes that would actually modify the looks of it. Not just the colors,icons and wallpaper.   • How to disable the start screen on Windows 8 Release Preview?

    The old advice to set the REG_DWORD value named RPEnabled (some sources claim it's RPEnable) under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer to 0 doesn't work anymore since the Consumer Preview (i.e. now also for the Release Preview). Yes, I tried both RPEnabled and RPEnable. How can I log into the system and be presented the desktop instead of the metro start screen? I got rid of the lock screen already, so this is the missing piece in the puzzle of making Windows 8 Release Preview usable.

  • How can I remap control+e to escape+control+e in iTerm2?

    I have set up a few custom keyboard shortcuts in iTerm2 to easily move the cursor around with the arrow keys, but now I'd like to remap control+e to be escape, control+e because bash 4.2 no longer auto-expands variables using the tab key. I know I've done the first part correctly in choosing the keyboard shortcut to remap, but I don't understand how to look up the correct escape sequence (or hex codes) to send in the bottom section: I reference they keyboard codes but that wasn't much help. How can I remap this, and how can I look up the codes in the future? (No luck with Google) Update @db - thanks.   • Komodo Edit - How to disable the 'Linter' for a language?

    I've been using Komodo Edit to work on a Django project. It works great except for one little annoyance: When I am editing Django template files, Komodo likes to put red squiggly lines underneath the first HTML tag that follows a Django tag, because it thinks it is an invalid HTML doc (although it isn't, it just has Django template tags/filters in it). Note that this red squiggly line is called a "Linter error" in the docs that I can find. Is there some way to turn off this red squiggly for only a specific type of language? It's nice to have when working on Python code but it's annoying to have a red squiggly on every single one of my Django templates.

    recently I found a video on the net ( a .mp4 file), and when I had it on my computer with Windows7, I noticed its thumbnail was not the average windows 7 video thumbnail (which looks like a piece of video film with a random picture from the movie), but a custom thumbnail! Looking in the file properties did not help find the correct button to change the thumbnail...so I just wonder how he did it!   • Custom PCI bracket with support, for custom PCB?

    I am considering to put a custom PCB card that I made, into my computer. It won't go on any PCI connector, it plugs in on a USB connector on the motherboard, via a ribbon cable. I need thou to plug a device to it; which means that either I leave the PCB outside the case, hanging by the ribbon (bad idea), or I could put it in a PCI slot, using a bracket. The issue is that the brackets that I have, do not have tabs, so I have no way to screw the PCB on them. I was hoping to find something that would allow me to put the PCB on it, and then just fit it in the PCI bracket opening, like this: http://www.idotpc.com/TheStore/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=1203&idcategory=0 This one won't fit the bill since the holes are too close apart, compared to the one that I have already on the PCB (and can't make more holes). Do you know if there is a place where they make universal PCI bracket mounting systems for custom PCB? I just need one, so can't even order a custom one (they ask me 120 dollars for one).   • Will installing an Ultra ATA cable backwards affect performance?

    I've recently purchased a hard drive upgrade for my Xbox 320GB WD Caviar Blue WD3200AAJB and StarTech.com Ultra ATA/66/100/133 cable IDE66 yes I'm crazy When it came to installing the cable, it was too short (my fault), and there wasn't enough space between the master and slave ends to reach both the DVD drive and the hard drive. The only thing I could do was install the cable backwards and twisting it quite a bit to make it fit. The upgrade works, but reading the manual for the hard drive I replaced (10GB Seagate U Series 5), apparently there is a specific way you have to connect the cable. I don't have that option, so the question comes down to, will my drive performance be at Ultra ATA levels, or is it still performing at original ATA speeds? Is there any way I can test this (benchmarking software for Xbox)?

  • Steps in subclassing UINavigationController

    Hello I would like to subclass the UINavigationController to get some more freedom in regards to the appearance of the controller. I have some graphics for the different parts, bars, buttons, text etc. Looking at the UINavigationController header file I get little help, I don't know where to start out. I have never subclassed/overridden a UIKit component before, it seems it is a bit like playing Sherlock Holmes. What is the approach? How do I know what to override to get a a specific piece of graphics "injected" the correct place? Do I need to subclass UINavigationBar, UIBarButtonItem etc. etc to get the complete customized look? How do I know if something is off limits in regards to being approved by Apple? Hope someone can point me in the right direction, I have only been able to find examples of changing small parts of the controller, not a full customization by subclassing. Am I going about this the wrong way? Thanks:)

  • Android SlidingDrawer in Eclipse IDE

    I am trying to design an application for Android that makes use of the SlidingDrawer, but I have not been able to use the form (layout?) designer to add this element without producing an exception "IllegalArgumentException: The handle attribute is required and must refer to a valid child." As of March 17th, I believe I have everything up to date (Eclipse, and the Android SDK). All the SDK components have been installed. I have created two Android virtual devices, One for version 1.0, and one for version 2.1 when I figured out that 1.0 didn't support the SlidingDrawer. I have tried importing the samples provided in the SDK, as well as several other layouts from the web that I have found, all of which produce this same exception. My programming background is mostly C++, and I consider myself to be a novice programmer, so feel free to talk to me as if I were an idiot so that I will understand. ^^;

    I have a button that displays Javascript confirmation popup. This is a part of my test case: <tr <tdclickAndWait</td <tdbuttonId</td <td</td </tr <tr <tdverifyTextPresent</td <tdObject has been deleted</td <td</td </tr It works as expected: OK is clicked automatically on a popup and verifyTextPresent return true. Still, I get [error] There was an unexpected Confirmation! in the log and test case fails. Any suggestions?

  • Delphi 2010 buttons losing click event

    I've been experimenting a quite strange problem using Delphi 2010. In one form (a quite complex one) some buttons are automagically losing the click event. I am not dynamically assigning the event or something (they are wired in IDE). The events are fired OK some times but suddenly (and randomly) some of them don't fire the events anymore. Placing a break point in the event doesn't stop the execution. Weird, yes, and I'm lost. I know there is no explanation for this so I only want to ask if there is anybody else experimenting the same problem.

  • Customize VisualStudio syntax highlighting even more

    Hi everybody, I am wondering if it is possible to set VisualStudio IDE so it highlights private/protected/public variables of the class differently as well as change formatting on locals (i.e. variables that are either passed in or declared inside a function, like this). I did not find any such options in the normal Fonts and Colors menu of VS. Also a search on SO reveals that (at least as of 2 years ago) only add-ons provide such features. But is there a way to manually edit some file? Just because we don't get a nice UI to edit, doesn't mean underlying framework automatically doesn't support it. I mean add-ons have to plug into something to do their magic in the editor. Any insights into this issue? Thanks!

    This is not a subjective question. I am genuinely looking for techinccal reasons to do so. I will risk offending some folks (not intended as an offence – maybe as a goad) by saying that I have been coding for 30+ years and used to be religously attched to each of them, but as soone as I saw editor-cum-IDE which seemed to offer more, I moved on. Is there any compelling reason, in this day and age, to choose Vi / Emacs over – say- Eclipse for code editing? Even Notepad++ for win-doze users seems to offer more. Just sayin'

  • Trying to build a Drupal-like CMS in ASP.NET MVC - Newbie Questions

    I am new to ASP.NET MVC, and the ASP.NET technology in general, so, please, excuse the stupidity of my questions. I have a lot of experience with php development and CMS customization (Drupal and Wordpress mainly), and I wanted to know whether some techniques could be applied in asp.net mvc. I want to know what exactly could be modified without recompiling an already built application Can I edit the views without recompiling the app. Can I create custom themes ? Can I add plugins compiled as dlls and use them at runtime. Can I "mark" the assembly in such a way that the web application will check on the next request and will reference it, without me manually adding it to the project and recompiling. I've heard that this is possible. I will make sure to add more when something comes up. The reason I am asking is because I'd like to try and develop a Drupal-like CMS (custom types, views, etc) in asp.net mvc. The dynamism of php will be quite a challenge to replicate in a compiled technology, yet I am ready to try.
