• Will dolphins die if I use REST "as CRUD"?

  Recently I moved to Laravel and I was surprised on how good setting the controllers as RESTful is, it made routes and my code cleaner. I'm kinda new on web development and never used REST before since all my clients' projects are basically CRUD operations. There's any cool buzzword to this "approach" or I'm just stupid for doing it? I don't plan to follow any REST patterns, just to make my life easier and code cleaner. Basicallly just GET/POST, the other ones are not native anyway so (emulated on hidden form value).

• How to disable Alert volume from the command line in Natty?

  There is an option in the Sound Preferences dialog, Sound Effects tab, to toggle Alert volume 'mute'. It works and suffices for my needs to disable the irritating system beep/bell. However, I reinstall systems a LOT for testing purposes and would like to set this setting in a shell script so it's off without having to fiddle with a GUI. But for the life of me I can't seem to find where this can be toggled via a command line tool. I've scanned through gconf-editor, pulseaudio's pacmd, grepped through /etc, even dug through the gnome-volume-control source code, but I am not seeing how this can be set. I gather that gnome-volume-control has changed since a few releases ago. I'm using Natty fwiw. Ideas?

  I own a Dell Latitude E6520 with an Intel CPU (Core i7 2720QM). In English : no cpufreq pilot found for this CPU. Thus my CPU runs always at full speed (2,2 GHz) which consume the battery and shorten its life. I don't either know how to activate turbo mode.   When pgAdmin III is used to open a PostgreSQL database the following message appears. There does not seem to be any obvious package listed in the Ubuntu Software Center for this. The server lacks instrumentation functions. pgadmin III uses some support functions that are not available by default in all PostgreSQL versions. These enable some tasks that make life easier when dealing with log files and configuration files. The adminpack is installed and activated by default if you are running the one-click installer of PostgreSQL. On Unix, you may have to install the contrib package, either with your package installer tool or by compilation.

  I've been a programmer for most of my life. I recently interviewed for a management job in a company and the interviewer looked at my CV asked me "How do we know you're not just a programmer". Which in my opinion is quite a rude thing to say, but it's not an isolated incident and I've heard other similar things in other settings. It does seem that for some reason being a programmer is viewed as having a lower station, especially in settings where they have a separate IT department which is viewed as a support role. Is a career in software development doomed to being a second-rate support citizen?

• How does one block unsupported web browsers?

  Web browsers with an end of life no longer receive security updates which not only makes them vulnerable to the end user, but I imagine its not safe for the server's which receive visits by them either. Is it practical to block or enforce and notify the end user that their browser is unsafe and unsupported? If so, how would one achieve that? I don't know of any official or crowd-sourced listing with that information to parse and keep up to date. I'm aware that the practice can be custom built with User Agent parsing and feature detection for HTML5 enabled browsers.

  I'm currently in the planning stage for my next game, and since I've been away from C++ for a while I have some questions about helpful libraries. I plan on making a 2D game with SDL, constructing my own simple 2D engine. I plan on making this game for the PC. What libraries would you recommend to make this process easier? What about unittests? What about an enforce operator to throw exceptions? int a = 1; enforce(a == 2); //Throws an exception, Specifically, i'm looking for general purpose libraries, that implement that make my life easier (like boost). Also, a helpful library for physics/collision, AI, XML file parsing (specifically working with the Tiled map editor), and any others that you guys have used that are useful in a 2D game.

• How do I know if my game's average game session time is too small?

  My game has only one life, and the aim is to stay alive as long as possible to get as many points as possible (it's an endless runner). Using Google Analytics I found that players are staying alive for an average of 17 seconds. I could easily increase or decrease this by manipulating acceleration or starting speed. The question is, should I change it at all? Is there any research or general ideas on the best playing time for a game like this? I would also like to know about any research about how long an ideal mobile game session should last.

  Hello to the gaming community. I am a budding game designer, learning to code for the first time in my life. I did learned c++ in school, 8 years back, so I sort of understand the logic when people are doing coding and I can suggest them the right route also, but to an extent I can't code. I am beginning to learn coding for Unity 3D. Which one do you suggest is more versatile and easier to work on for future, because I am a game designer not a coder, I would do coding until I don't have anyone else to code for me. It should be easy and fast to learn, functional and universal to apply, and innovative at the same time. C# or JavaScript ? New research from Purdue University and Microsoft highlight just how much ad-driven apps tank your battery life. What did they find? That poorly designed ad-modules in free ad-driven applications are terrible at conserving energy. • How do I install the Intel Graphics driver in my system?

  Can someone help me out and explain or point me in the right direction on how to check video drivers and see if my video card running okay? I had 10.04 installed on my Thinkpad r61 with Compiz Manager and life was great, until the machine took water damage. I bought an ASUS (X54H) since and am trying out 12.04, but the desktop just doesn't look right. I always struggled with video driver installation. There are no proprietary drivers available in the hardware manager. When I run lspci | grep VGA: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) I will greatly appreciate your help. I want to use Linux more, but like I said video drivers appear to be my biggest concern. I have also tried 12.04 on my desktop PC, but again failed to configure video card, so switched back to Windows 7.

  I was pinged by one of my favorite database technology sites today, ODBMS.ORG - informing that Dave Segleau, the Director of Oracle NoSQL Database product management spent some time talking with their editor Roberto Zicari about the product.   Its a great interview and I highly recommend the read.  I think its important to understand the connectivity that Oracle NoSQL Database (ONDB) has with BerkeleyDB, as it says a lot about the maturity of ONDB as it relates to data integrity and reliability.  BerkeleyDB has been living the NoSQL life since the beginning of this transition embracing the right tool for the job approach to data management.  Several of the biggest names in NoSQL ( e.g. LinkedIn's Voldemort ) built their NoSQL scale-out solutions leveraging the robust BerkeleyDB storage engine under their distribution architectures.  Oracle commercializing the same via ONDB makes perfect sense given the demonstrated need for this category of technology.

• Thinkpad T530 with Optimus and Docking Station

  I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T530 with Optimus video, which is not supported on 12.04.1. I don't normally need the discrete (nVidia) graphics, so I turn it off in the BIOS settings to achieve longer battery life (and so that the screen dimmer will work), but when placed in the docking station, the integrated (Intel) graphics don't power the HDMI ports. (The VGA port does work, but I want to focus on the HDMI.) This means I have to change the BIOS settings constantly. Is there any way to have the system detect the docking station and power up/enable the discrete graphics accordingly? I don't need to do it on the fly. Just at startup. This post suggests that bumblebee can turn the discrete graphics on and off for specific applications, but I just want to turn it on or off. [2 suggests that vga_switcheroo will not work with nVidia Optimus.

  I seem to remember reading somewhere some list of 4 "levels" of understanding multithreading. This may have been in a formal publication, or it may have been in an extremely informal context (even like in a Stack Overflow question, for example). Unfortunately I don't remember who referred to them or precisely what they were. I seem to recall that they were roughly like: Total ignorance Awareness mixed with incompetence Relative competence mixed with fear True understanding My intention is to refer to these levels in a blog post I'm writing, with a reference; but I can't for the life of me remember where I first encountered this list. Brief Google searches have proved unfruitful.
