• Enable PDO for PHP5 on CentOS5 where PHP is configured as '--disable-pdo'

  Hi I have been given access to a CentOS5 machine by my client for their new site which uses Zend Framework. phpinfo() states in Configure Command that PDO is disabled ('--disable-pdo'). How can enable it? Do I need to recompile PHP5 to enable it? I have tried adding 'extension=pdo.so' in php.ini and restarting Apache, but this didn't work. It would also be nice to understand what '--disable-pdo' actaully means, does it mean it's not compiled into PHP or does it mean its just not enabled? Thanks for your time

• Delphi 2010 Professional and remote database access

  Hi, When looking for which version of Delphi 2010 to buy, we found the following limitation on the professional one: Delphi 2010 Professional is designed for developers building high-performance desktop GUI and touch-screen applications with (or without) embedded and local database persistence. What does this really mean? Does this mean that we'll only face this restriction if we choose to use the native vcl components for database access we'll face this restriction. And what if we choose to use ADO components instead of those? In this case, how can Delphi avoid us to access remote database servers? Did anyone here ever tried this? Going even further: if we choose to use a database like Firebird, which is just one file, and used a network mapped drive. Could we be facing the same limitation? Supposing we opt for ADO, what will be the main consequences?

• Disable rows in Flex DataGrid

  Unless I'm missing something obvious here, there is no way of disbabling one or more rows in a DataGrid. I would expect a disabledRows or disabledRowIndidices property on the DataGrid or List component but that doesn't seem to exist. I found a "rendererArray" property which is scoped to mx_internal and contains all itemrenderers of all cells in the datagrid. So I can check the type and the value of the data inside the renderer and enable or disable all cells of the same row, but that feels too much like a hack. Any suggestions? Edit: I realize that disabling a row could mean different things. In my case it means not being able to edit the row even when the editable property of the datagrid is set to true. It could however also mean not being able to select a row, but that's not what I'm looking for.

• UITableView background customization strange behavior

  Hi, There is a couple of hours that I'm trying to set a tableView background image. My controller is a subclass of UITableViewController, and I simply wrote this lines of code in ViewDidLoad method. UIImage *image = [UIImage imageNamed:@"home-portrait-iphone.png"]; UIImageView *imageView = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithImage:image]; self.tableView.backgroundView = imageView; Everything looks great on the simulator, I mean, I see my table and as background view, y can see the image. But when the app is running on the device (ipod touch), I get this error: Program received signal: “SIGABRT”. and the stack says: * -[UITableView setBackgroundView:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x812e00 Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '** -[UITableView setBackgroundView:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x812e00' and the exception is thrown in the assignment, a mean this line: self.tableView.backgroundView = imageView; any ideas?   Simple questions. function p() { function A() { this.random = "random"; } A.prototype.newfunc = function(){ alert("5");} function B() { } B.prototype = new A(); var bObj = new B(); } Q1: When I set B's prototype, I don't get how B's prototype property will update when/if A's prototype is updated. I mean, to me it just inherits/copies all those properties. It's not like it's: B.prototype = A.prototype where B and A are one in the same. Q2: After A is being returned and intialized to the prototype object of B, how does JS know not to include that prototype property? What I mean is, we never have this type of situation occuring as the JS interpreter knows just to chop off the property of A's prototype: B.prototype = new A(); //any A object has an associated prototype object B.prototype.prototype;//after initialization we no longer have the separate prototype property of A

• Customize VisualStudio syntax highlighting even more

  Hi everybody, I am wondering if it is possible to set VisualStudio IDE so it highlights private/protected/public variables of the class differently as well as change formatting on locals (i.e. variables that are either passed in or declared inside a function, like this). I did not find any such options in the normal Fonts and Colors menu of VS. Also a search on SO reveals that (at least as of 2 years ago) only add-ons provide such features. But is there a way to manually edit some file? Just because we don't get a nice UI to edit, doesn't mean underlying framework automatically doesn't support it. I mean add-ons have to plug into something to do their magic in the editor. Any insights into this issue? Thanks!

With powerful I don't mean the readability, assembler would be naturally the winner here, but something resulting from, for example, the following factors: Which of them is more high-level? (Both aren't really but one has to be more) Who would be the possibly fastest in compiled state? (There is no BF compiler out there as far as I know but it wouldn't be hard writing one I suppose) Which of the both has the better code length/code action ratio? What I mean is If you get to distracted by the, compared to Brainf*ck, improved readability of assembler, just think of writing plain binary/machine code as what assembler assembles to. Both languages are so basic that it should be possible to answer the question(s) in a rather objective view, I hope.

  Hi all, I'm creating a firefox add-on, and I have a situation where if someone clicks on a specific item in my toolbarbutton menupopup, I want to display some text to appear beside the mouse for a couple seconds. I don't mean mouseover text, because when they click on the item, the I close the menupopup. I mean something like what's shown at this site: http://www.kingsquare.nl/cursormessage The normal way of doing this would be with javascript and a div that would have the text I want to show. Unfortunately, I've discovered that the toolbarbutton can't have an effect on the main window, which is where I'd need to place the div to show. I've tried getting JQuery to work and haven't been successful either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

• MySQL index cardinality - performance vs storage efficiency

  Say you have a MySQL 5.0 MyISAM table with 100 million rows, with one index (other than primary key) on two integer columns. From my admittedly poor understanding of B-tree structure, I believe that a lower cardinality means the storage efficiency of the index is better, because there are less parent nodes. Whereas a higher cardinality means less efficient storage, but faster read performance, because it has to navigate through less branches to get to whatever data it is looking for to narrow down the rows for the query. (Note - by "low" vs "high", I don't mean e.g. 1 million vs 99 million for a 100 million row table. I mean more like 90 million vs 95 million) Is my understanding correct? • Mobile development decision - Future wise (Iphone,android,symbian)

  Hi, I would like to learn mobile development, but I'm not sure which category would be the most cost effective one. I know it's kind of a prophecy question, but anyhow, suggestions would be welcomed. So, as i'm pretty familiar with C++ development , I though about learning QT. I understand that using QT, I can develop once and then deploy to symbian,Mee-go, and of course to windows, linux and more. (does that mean I won't have to lean each OS internal calls, and just learn the QT library ? ) Learning development for android , mean I will have to learn Java, which is not my preferred way of action right now. Another option is to learn Objective-C, but as it only apply to Iphone development, I think it's a pretty narrow zone for me. I want to learn a library, which would be a wise decision career wise. Any recommendations ?

• rails using jruby 1.5 - slow!!

I'm currently using passenger with ree 1.8.7 in production for a rails 2.3.5 project using postgresql as a database. ab -n 10000 -c 100: 285.69 [#/sec] (mean) I read jruby should be the fastest solution, so I installed jruby-1.5.0.rc2 together with jdbc postgres adapter and glassfish. As the performance is really poor, I also started running my application using "jruby --server -J-Druby.jit.threshold=0 script/server -e production". Anyway, I only get ab -n 10000 -c 100: 43.88 [#/sec] (mean) Thread_safe! is activated in my rails config. Java seems to use all cores, cpu usage is around 350% (top). ruby -v: jruby 1.5.0.RC2 (ruby 1.8.7 patchlevel 249) (2010-04-28 7c245f3) (Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM 1.6.0_16) [amd64-java] I wonder what I'm doing wrong and how to get better performancre with jruby than with ree? • Question about spring manning-in-action

  I saw people asking about best book for learning spring, and I came across manning.spring in action was recommended most of the time so I decided to give it a go. The thing is the author offers some pretty reasonable explanations, puzzle by puzzle it gets in your head, than you just need to code it and you're done, you get it(this is how I work don't know about the others). When it comes to the code its very disapointing, I went trought the Knight example like 2 or 3 times by now and I see its incorrect in the book, I mean its hard already for people eager to learn and why not a note somewhere in the book like pseudo-code or something. The knight example in the first chapter is missing two classes QuestFailedException and HolyGrail I mean other people must have noticed this, why is everyone recommending this book without saying at least it has some errors(like many others do), was anyone actually been able to compile and this first chapter example?

  I am using the API to understand the performance of Adwords ad campaigns. I need to know how to attribute metrics back to the date dimension. For instance, for a given date, if I have 20 clicks, 18 visits, and 3 goal completions, does it mean that: 1) All of these actions happened on the day in question and are otherwise independent (meaning that the 3 goals could have been for people that clicked any time in the past 30 days, not who clicked on that day) 2) The on-site actions are a subset of the click activity on that day (i.e. on that day, 20 people clicked, 18 registered a real visit, and 3 completed a goal) If it is scenario 2, does that mean there is a need to refresh old rows every day?   we use an application that has an "export to excel" feature that doesn't work on PC's that done have outlook express installed. i know, you're thinking "WTF does outlook express have to do with excel files?" i asked the same thing, and here's what i found: the file being generated is actually one of those Microsoft Single File Web Pages (.mht) and NOT an excel file you need to have outlook express installed to actually view a .mht file. i've explained to their support people that just because you can slap a .xls on a file and excel will open it does not mean its an excel file, and does not mean that this is the right way to do it. how would you explain that this is not proper?

• Understanding the output of ldd

  I'm having a hard time understanding the output of ldd - Especially the processor identifiers. The string in question is this one: Shortest.so: ELF 32-bit LSB shared object, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, from ']', not stripped I have several questions about it: What does "ELF" mean? I know that's what Linux binaries are called like (Windows Binaries are called PE Binaries, "Portable Executable" Binaries), but isn't ELF an abbreviation for something? What does LSB mean? I can't even guess it... I see the string "Intel" there, now I seriously wonder about the portability of Linux binaries, as ldd seems to expect every binary to be compiled on a intel processor... but what if it wasn't compiled on a Intel processor? Or when I attempt to run the binary on a computer that doesn't run ontop of a Intel processor? Why the ']'? My guess is it should be some sort of Linker identify, but ']' doesn't look much like a Identifier... Thanks in advance
