• web page db query optimisation

  I am putting together a web page which is quite 'expensive' in terms of Db hits. I dont want to start optimizing at this stage - though with me trying to hit a deadline, I may end up not optimising at all. Currently the page requires 18 (thats right eighteen) hits to the db. I am already using joins, and some of the queries are UNIONed to minimize the trips to the db. My local dev machine can handle this (page is not slow) however, I feel if I release this into the wild, the number of queries will quickly overwhelm my database (mySQL). I could always use memcache or something similar, but I would much rather continue with my other dev work that needs to be completed before the deadline - at least retrieving the page work, its simply a matter of optimization. My question therefore is - is 18 db queries for a single page retrieval completely outrageous - (i.e. I should put everything on hold and optimize the hell of the retrieval logic), or shall I continue as normal, meet the deadline and release on schedule and see what happens?

• What's the difference between PATH_NOT_FOUND and NAME_NOT_FOUND

  In Win32 layer, we often meet ERROR_PATH_NOT_FOUND, ERROR_NAME_NOT_FOUND. When does WinAPI(eg CreateFileW, RemoveDirectoryW) return these values? And What's the difference? If I write a file system driver, when do I set STATUS_OBJECT_PATH_NOT_FOUND or STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND? I'm so confused. Is there anyone who can explain clearly? Or are there any documents explain this? I couldn't find them. Thanks in advance.

• Get path to a file via flash

  I'm not a flash dev, but I'm turning to it to try and meet a requirement. I'm to allow a user to select a file on their computer, then pass it to my web application. I know it's not possible to do this using Javascript, hence wanting to use flash. First, is this possible? Second, can I get a pointer on how its done? To clarify: I'm just looking for the path to the file. I don't want to upload it.

• Are there any ASP.NET MVC Real Time View Editors?

  I'm looking for a tool and I'm not even sure of the proper name. Please be patient with me as I explain. I'm doing a lot of html/mvc 2 work. Using the standard MVC 2 view engine, I would like to have an editor that shows real time changes in the browser. If I re-arrange div elements containing standard HTML and some server side components, I would like the browser to update without a manual refresh. Are there any tools that are currently available that would meet that requirement?

• Controling CRT memory initialization

  Occasionally you meet bugs that are reproducible only in release builds and/or only on some machines. A common (but by no means only) reason is uninitialized variables, that are subject to random behaviour. E.g, an uninitialized BOOL can be TRUE most of the time, on most machines, but randomly be initialized as FALSE. What I wish I would have is a systematic way of flushing out such bugs by modifying the behaviour of the CRT memory initialization. I'm well aware of the MS debug CRT magic numbers - at the very least I'd like to have a trigger to turn 0xCDCDCDCD (the pattern that initializes freshly allocated memory) to zeros. I suspect one would be able to easily smoke out nasty initialization pests this way, even in debug builds. Am I missing an available CRT hook (API, registry key, whatever) that enables this? Anyone has other ideas to get there?

• How to line up columns using paste(1)? or how to make an aligned table merging lines in the shell?

  Hi, I want to merge lines such that the merged lines are aligned on the same boundary. UNIX paste(1) does this nicely when lines all meet at the same tab boundary, but when lines differ in size (in the file that lines are being merged into), the text comes out awkward. Example of paste(1) that has the desired effect: $ echo -e "a\nb\nccc\nd" | paste - - a b ccc d Example of paste(1) with undesired effect: $ echo -e "a\nb\ncccccccccccc\nd" | paste - - a b cccccccccccc d Note how the 2nd column doesn't line up. I want 'b' to line up with 'd', which requires an additional tab. Unfortunately I believe this is the limit for the paste utility, so if anyone has any idea of how to get the desired effect above, I'd love to hear it.

• Chrome Extension - Dynamic Right-Click Menu

  I am trying to create an option in the right-click menu that is dynamic based on the user's action. If the user selects some text, then right-clicks, the option will say "Display It". If the user right-clicks without selecting some text, the option will say "Select Some Text First" and be grayed out. I am wondering how do I achieve this? I currently have it so that the option will appear only when the user has selected some text. • Simple interlinear gloss: aligned bilingual paragraph

  An interlinear gloss can be used to layout a translation of a document. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interlinear_gloss Usually this is done word-by-word or morpheme-by-morpheme. However, I would like to do this in a different way, translating entire paragraphs at a time. http://www.optimnem.co.uk/learning/spanish/three-little-pigs.php For now I am not interested in taking into account the order of words or phrases that change order between languages. That is, I don't mind if the words in the paragraph are not aligned or if the length of one paragraph is much longer than the other, causing an overhanging line. • how do I do this UPDATE in sqlite?

  I have a table assoc containing columns local_id, remote_id, cachedData I can successfully run an SQLITE query that looks like SELECT a1.local_id, a1.remote_id FROM assoc a1 LEFT JOIN .... so that I identify certain rows of the assoc table that meet my criteria. What I would like to do is to set cachedData to null in those rows. How can I do this? Sqlite doesn't support UPDATE with joins; you can issue subqueries but I can't figure out how to get the syntax correct; it seems nonintuitive to me.

• Which PHP calendar will suit my needs? Or build my own?

  There are so many web based calendars out there that I'm not sure which will best suit my purposes. I want to create an events calendar, which I suppose looks and functions in much the same way as google calendar. But users shouldn't need to sign up for a gmail account or a google account. Users of my social network website should be able to create events in the calendar and share it with other friends in their "friend network". In month, year or day views, you can mouse hover events to see a bubble dialog that lists events in detail. People need to pay a monthly fee to use my website (not sure if this prevents me from using google apps). So is something like Google Calendar the way to go? Or are there other php/javascript calendars out there that already meet my needs? Or will it just save me more time to build my own?

• What algorithm would you use to code a parrot?

  A parrot learns the most commonly uttered words and phrases in its vicinity so it can repeat them at inappropriate moments. So how would you create a software version? Assuming it has access to a microphone and can record sound at will, how would you code it without requiring infinite resources? The best I can imagine is to divide the stream using silences in the sound, and then use some pattern recognition to encode each one as a list of tokens, storing new ones as you meet them. Hashing the token sequences and counting occurrences in a database, you could build up a picture of the most frequently uttered phrases. But given the huge variety in phrases, how do you prevent this just becoming a huge list? And the sheer number of pairs to match would surely generate lot of false positives from the combinatorial nature of matching. Would you use a neural net, since that's how a real parrot manages it? Or is there another, cleverer way of matching large-scale patterns in analogue data?

  I want to count how many members of an iterable meet a given condition. I'd like to do it in a way that is clear and simple and preferably reasonably optimal. My current best ideas are: sum(meets_condition(x) for x in my_list) and len([x for x in my_list if meets_condition(x)]) The first one being iterator based is presumably faster for big lists. And it's the same form as you'd use for testing any and all. However it depends on the fact that int(True) == 1, which is somewhat ugly. The second one seems easier to read to me, but it is different from the any and all forms. Does anyone have any better suggestions? is there a library function somewhere that I am missing?

  I'm writing a SQL statement to select a user on a table if that user does not exist on another table, then I want to pull in all their data from another table then I'll be outputting all that in Coldfusion. How do I do this? I have tried, my atempt is below: pro_profile == All employees mod_userStatus == All Professional Staff members I am doing the not exists to remove professional stuff to just get our student staff. mod_StudentCertifications is a listing of the certifications they (students) hold. If we do an AND statement between the where statements it returns no users, or only users that meet both conditions, if we do an OR it will return users with only 1 condition. I need it first Match the not exists then proceed to the exists statement. Is that do able? It's obvious how you can open a window from a javascript link that frames an existing page, or just do a target=_blank from a regular a tag that references an existing page. But I am generating a bit of content, and want that content to be opened in a new link (or streamed to the viewer)-- something like (clearly psuedo code!): $content = "Hello World. <br />Nice to meet you!"; <a href="#" target="_blank" content=$content>Open up!</a> Is this possible?   I am developing my own lightbox kind of jquery plugin. Everything works but I want to hide the loaded content until the images have loaded in the browser from the AJAX call. I found a similar post and I am using the following script but the setTimeout function is what reveals the content and not the .load function. Lets say a v got a class: public Class MyClass { ... } And an interace: public Interface IMyInterface { MyClass PropertyOfMyClass {get;} } and now a generic class: public class MyGeneric<T> where T:MyClass { T PropertyOfMyClass { get{return ...;} } } Until here everythings fine and compiles right. But this will break at compilation time: public class MyGeneric<T>:IMyInterace where T:MyClass { T PropertyOfMyClass { get{return ...;} } } Saying that MyGeneric does not implements method of IMyInterface. But obviously it does, not ?

• Counting values in data frame subject to conditions

  I have been searching around and I cannot figure out how to sumarise the data I have in my data frame (subject to some ranges). I know that it can be done when applying some combination of daaply/taaply or table but I haven't been able to get the exact result I was expecting. Basically I want to turn this: part_no val1 val2 val3 2 1 2 3 45.3 2 1 3 4 -12.3 3 1 3 4 99.3 3 1 5 2 -3.2 3 1 4 3 -55.3 Into this: part_no val3_between0_50 val3_bw50_100 val3_bw-50_0 val3_bw-100_-50 2 1 0 0 1 0 3 0 1 0 1 1 This is dummy data, I got a lot more rows, but the idea is the same. I just want to count the number of values for a participant that meet certain condition. If anyone could explain it sort of step by step, I would really appreciate it. I saw lots of different little posts around, but none do exactly this and my attempts only got me half way there. Like using table, etc. Thanks!

  I have a table with 2 columns (see below). A member can have multiple responses to a question RESPONSES --------- member_id INT response_id INT SAMPLE DATA member_id -- response_id 1 -- 3 1 -- 5 2 -- 1 2 -- 5 2 -- 9 3 -- 1 3 -- 5 3 -- 6 What I need to do is query the table for member that meet ALL response criteria. For example I need to select all members that have a response_id of 1 AND 5. I am using the following query: SELECT DISTINCT member_id FROM responses WHERE response_id = 1 AND response_id = 5. I would expect to get back member_id's 2,3. However I am getting nothing returned. I used EXPLAIN and it shows there is an error in my where query. What am I doing wrong? Also, is there a function similar to IN where all the criteria must be met in order to return true? Thanks for your help.

  Hello, I would like to hear your suggestions on kind of design problem which I have in c#. So, I am making a program where people can meet and draw in the same window over the internet or LAN. I am drawing into a bitmap and than I set it to a pictureBox component. I have a hard time to decide how to send updates to each user, what is the best way to do it. Should I send coordinates of mouse and than do the drawing on each users screen or stream the image to each. Maybe you know better solution to keep it synchronized and efficient. Thank you.

• Microsoft Templates included in jQuery 1.5!

  When I joined the ASP.NET team as the Program Manager for Ajax, the ASP.NET team was working on releasing a new version of the Microsoft Ajax Library. This new version of the Microsoft Ajax Library had several really innovative and unique features such as support for client templates, client data-binding, script dependency management, and globalization. However, we kept hearing the message that our customers wanted to use jQuery when building ASP.NET applications. Therefore, about ten months ago, we decided to pursue a risky strategy. Scott Guthrie sent me to Cambridge to meet with John Resig – the creator of jQuery and leader of the jQuery project – to find out whether Microsoft and jQuery could work together. We wanted to find out whether the jQuery project would be open to allowing Microsoft to contribute the innovative features that we were developing for the Microsoft Ajax Library -- such as client templates and client data-binding -- to the jQuery library. Fortunately, the Cambridge meeting with Resig went well. John Resig was very open to accepting contributions to the jQuery library. Over the next few months, we worked out a process for Microsoft to contribute new features to the open-source jQuery project. Resig and Guthrie appeared on stage at the MIX10 conference to announce that Microsoft would be contributing features to jQuery. It has been a long journey, but I am happy to report success. Today, Microsoft and the jQuery project have announced that three plugins developed by developers on the ASP.NET team – the jQuery Templates, jQuery Data Link, and jQuery Globalization plugins – have been accepted as official jQuery plugins.
