    How do I default-initialize a local variable of primitive type in C++? For example if a have a typedef: typedef unsigned char boolean;//that's Microsoft RPC runtime typedef I'd like to change the following line: boolean variable = 0; //initialize to some value to ensure reproduceable behavior retrieveValue( &variable ); // do actual job into something that would automagically default-initialize the variable - I don't need to assign a specific value to it, but instead I only need it to be intialized to the same value each time the program runs - the same stuff as with a constructor initializer list where I can have: struct Struct { int Value; Struct() : Value() {} }; and the Struct::Value will be default-initialized to the same value every time an instance is cinstructed, but I never write the actual value in the code. How can I get the same behavior for local variables?

  • eclipse adding java ant based project: Specified buildfile does not contain a javac task

    Hello. I have a project that i wrote for apache tomcat. I started working with eclipse i want to import the project to eclipse ide. using eclipse 3.6.1. when i create a new project using : File - New - Other - Java - Java Project from Existing Ant Buildfile and i provide the build file location i get the following error: Specified buildfile does not contain a javac task I have a red5 project that i used the same method and it worked. what am i missing? do i need to add something to the ant build file to make it work? what exactly ? where can i find more information regarding this specific subject ? thanks!

  • Website project takes a long time to load in VS.NET 2008

    After getting a new computer (a lot faster than the one I've used before) my Solutions take A LONG TIME (3-4 minutes) to load up in VS.NET 2008. I only have 2 projects in the solution: DB Project and Website Project (from IIS). If I remove the Website Project from Solution - it loads up instantly, when I add that same website project to the OPEN Solution - it loads up instantly. The only time it's slow is when I open the solution referencing my Website project. I had the exact same setup (as far as VS is concerned) on my old box, and never had this problem. Any ideas?

  • Examples of limitations in IT due to different bit length by design

    I am teaching the course "Introduction in Programming" for the first-year students and would like to find interesting examples where the datatype size in bits, chosen by design, led to certain known restrictions or important values. Here are some examples: Due to the fact that the Bell teleprinter used 7-bit-code (later accepted as ASCII) until now have we often to encode attachments in electronic messages to contain only 7 bit data. Classical limitation of 32-bit address space leads to the 4Gb maximal RAM size available for 32-bit systems and 4Gb maximal file size in FAT32. Do you know some other interesting examples how the choice of the data type (and especially its binary length) influenced the modern IT world. Added after some discussion in comments: I am not going to teach how to overcome limitations. I just want them to know that 1 byte can hold the values from -127..0..+127 o 0..255, 2 bytes cover the range 0..65535 etc by proving examples they know from other sources, like the above-mentioned base64 encoding etc. We are just learning the basic datatypes and I am trying to find a good reference for "how large" these types are.

  • Refactoring existing PHP Project. I need some advices

    i have a small SAS ERP that was written some years ago using PHP. At that time, it didn't used any framework, but the code isn't a mess as i will explain more detailed in the following lines. Nowadays, the project grow and I’m now working with 3 more programmers. Often, they ask to me why we don’t migrate to a framework such Laravel. Although I'd love trying Laravel, I’m a small business and i don't have time/money to stop and spend a whole year building everything from scratch. I need to live and pay the bills. So, I've read a lot about this matter, and I decided that doing a refactoring is the best way to do it. Also, I'm not so sure that a framework will make things easy. Business goals are: Make the code easier to new hired programmers I must separate the "view", because: I want to release different versions of this product (using the same code), but under different brands and websites at the minimum cost (just changing view) Release different versions to fit mobile/tablet. Make different types of this product, seeling packages as if it were plugins. Develop custom packages for some costumers (like plugins/addon's that they can buy to put on the main application). Code goals: Introduce best pratices, standards for everyone Try to build my own MVC structure Improve validation of data/forms (today they are mixed in both ajax and classes) Create automated testing rotines, to quality assurance. My actual structure project: class\ extra\ hd\ logs\ public_html\ public_html\includes\ public_html\css|js|images\ class\ There are three types of classes. They are all “autoloaded” with something similar with PSR-0, but I don’t use namespaces. 1. class.Something.php Connects to Database using specific methods. I.e: Costumer-list(); It uses “class.Db.php”, that it’s an abstraction of mysqli on every method. 2. class.SomethingProc.php Do things that “join” things that come from “class.Something.php”. Like IF/ELSE, math operations. 3. class.SomethingHTML.php The classes with “HTML” suffix implements only static methods and HTML code only. A real life example: All the programmers need to use $cSomething ($c to class) and $arrSomething (to array). Costumer.php (view) <?php $cCosumter = new Costumer(); $arrCostumer = $cCostumer->list(); echo CostumerHTML::table($arrCostumer); ?> Extra\ Store 3rdparty projects/classes from others, such MPDF, PHPMailer, etc. Hd\ Store user’s fies outsite wwwroot dir. Logs\ Store phplogs and the system itself logs (We have a static Log::error() method, that we put in every method of every class) Public_html\ Stores the files that people use. Something that i can give to any new programmer at my companie and he can go on. This is not totally a mess, but It could be better seeing the new practices. What could I do to separate this as MVC, to have multiple VIEW’s. Could you gimme some tips considering my goals?   • How to automatically include generated source files into a C# project in Visual Studio?

    I have a situation where I need to generate a bunch of C# code files in a prebuild step of a project and include the generated files into the current project for compilation. Is there a way to do this cleanly without having to muck with the project file every time the prebuild step is run? My solution should work for both IDE based build and a Team Build based on MSBuild. Since both are MSBuild based, I suspect there won't be much difference; but wanted to call it out. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

    Me and my friend started working together as partners , we have decided to make Kick-as* website after website. We have the ideas written down like 100's of them (yes we are choosing best and easy among them first). My friend does the layout design and arranging things , and my part is coding and server management. The little problem i am facing is lack of experience in planing a project. What i do is, I just start the code straight away and along with code I make DB, like when i need a table i make it. I know this is very bad approach for a medium sized project. Here at stackoverflow i saw lots of experienced coders. Need to learn a lot from you guys :) . So can you plese help me on how to plan a project and what coding standard/structure/frameworks to be used (I do PHP code). Thanks in advance.

    I was recently asked by a Team Leader (not mine) if I would be willing to undertake a programming project. The members of his team are currently pre-occupied with other more important projects. I graduated college two years ago, and up until now programming has only been a hobby of mine. Recently I decided that I would like to pursue a career in software development. I accepted his offer so that I can gain some real-world experience and start building a portfolio. In about an hour I'm scheduled to meet with the Team Leader to discuss the details of what he needs. From a short e-mail exchange with him, I know that the base project is to update an existing ASP.NET form—but I also think there's more to it than that. Considering that I'd like to eventually put this project in a portfolio, what kinds of notes should I take at the meeting?

  • SQL SERVER – Weekend Project – Visiting Friend’s Company – Koenig Solutions

    I have decided to do some interesting experiments every weekend and share it next week as a weekend project on the blog. Many times our business lives and personal lives are very separate, however this post will talk about one instance where my two lives connect. This weekend I visited my friend’s company. My friend owns Koenig, so of course I am very interested so see that they are doing well.  I have been very impressed this year, as they have expanded into multiple cities and are offering more and more classes about Business Intelligence, Project Management, networking, and much more. Koenig Solutions originally were a company that focused on training IT professionals – from topics like databases and even English language courses.  As the company grew more popular, Koenig began their blog to keep fans updated, and gradually have added more and more courses. I am very happy for my friend’s success, but as a technology enthusiast I am also pleased with Koenig Solutions’ success.  Whenever anyone in our field improves, the field as a whole does better.  Koenig offers high quality classes on a variety of topics at a variety of levels, so anyone can benefit from browsing this blog.
