  • Aliases not available when using sudo

    - by Danny Roberts
    I was playing around with aliases today and I noticed that aliases don't seem to be available whilst using sudo: danny@kaon:~$ alias alias egrep='egrep --color=auto' alias fgrep='fgrep --color=auto' alias grep='grep --color=auto' alias l='ls -CF' alias la='ls -A' alias ll='ls -alF' alias ls='ls --color=auto' danny@kaon:~$ ll -d / drwxr-xr-x 23 root root 4096 2011-01-06 20:29 // danny@kaon:~$ sudo -i root@kaon:~# ll -d / drwxr-xr-x 23 root root 4096 2011-01-06 20:29 // root@kaon:~# exit logout danny@kaon:~$ sudo ll -d / sudo: ll: command not found Is there any reason why you cannot use aliases whilst using sudo?

  • How to know the root device size of some public AMI?

    - by red23jordan
Since I do not want to pay money for my testing, the free limit size is 10G. I can know the root device root for some default AMI such as Amazon Linux AMI 2012.03 The Amazon Linux AMI 2012.03 is an EBS-backed, PV-GRUB image. It includes Linux 3.2, AWS tools, and repository access to multiple versions of MySQL, PostgreSQL, Python, Ruby, and Tomcat. Root Device Size: 8 GB And the last row displayed 8GB. However, if I find AMI in Community Page, it does not show the root device size. Can anyone know how to use the instance such as centOS that is not provided by default but it is under 10GB so that I can still free use?

  • Why is my RAID /dev/md1 showing up as /dev/md126? Is mdadm.conf being ignored?

  • Why is my Ubuntu system not using the correct kernel?

    - by Brooks Moses
We're having a bit of confusion on a Ubuntu remote system -- /boot/grub/menu.lst suggests the system should boot into kernel 2.6.35-30-generic, but it is actually running kernel 2.6.32-27-generic. Where should I look to start figuring out why this is happening and how to fix it? Specifically, /boot/grub/menu.lst has default 0 and the first entry is title Ubuntu 10.10, kernel 2.6.35-30-generic uuid 67717ee3-cbf9-45d2-ae97-820256f4c4fd kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-30-generic root=UUID=67717ee3-cbf9-45d2- ae97-820256f4c4fd ro quiet splash initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.35-30-generic Further, I've confirmed that /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-30-generic and /boot/initrd.img-2.6.35-30-generic exist and have appropriate permissions. • Ho to log on MySQL on CentOS 6.3 using root account from the domain and not localhost?

    - by Ziouas
I don't know if I'll make the issue clear, but I've installed MySQL on CentOS 6.3 using root account on a specific domain (f.ex. root@mydomain), but when i try to log on to it I'm being asked for password to root@localhost account, which I do not have access to. How can I log on to MySQL installed on 'mydomain' and not to 'localhost'? I've tried editing my.cnf using bind-address='domain_ip', but it didn't help, it still wanted localhost password.

  • How to set default Java version?

    - by Matteo
I have followed all the instructions stated at this question, but am encountering some problems with the last part of it. I actually have version 6.22 of java and would like to update to version 6.30. So after moving the extracted directory java-6-oracle into /usr/lib/jvm I do not know what to do, since the script that is pointed out in the answer above updates from java 5 to java 6. For sake of clearness here is output if I do an ls in dir /usr/lib/jvm: matteo@matteo-ThinkPad-SL:/usr/lib/jvm$ ls -l total 8 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 14 2011-07-12 15:18 default-java - java-6-openjdk lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 14 2011-07-12 12:19 java-1.6.0-openjdk - java-6-openjdk drwxr-xr-x 10 root root 4096 2012-04-12 12:06 java-6.31-oracle drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 2012-02-24 14:43 java-6-openjdk What should I do now?

  • XML: Multiple roots + text content outside the root. Does anyone do it?

    - by Jeffrey Sweeney
I have another one of those "is it done in XML" questions (my last one about xml comments hasn't been answered if anyone has a good explanation) I was just wondering if anyone, anywhere would: Use multiple root elements in an XML document Put text content outside of a root element W3C discourages these practices, Javascript's DOMParser doesn't even allow these cases, and I can't think of one sane reason to do either of these things. However, I know how bizarre some implementations of XML have been, so I wouldn't be surprised. Does anyone have any real world examples where this would be done? I will also accept an answer that specifies if other mainstream parsers allow doing either of these.

  • Where should the web server root directory go in linux?

    - by Xeoncross
I see that Apache and Nginx both use var/www as their web root - but that directory is not covered in the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard. I also see some servers with the web root in the /home/username/www directory. So where does the web root go? Or rather, where should it go most of the time for the common web server?

  • how to start sendmail - WP email turned off

    - by wejrowski
I have a WP site on a linux box. Our email was working fine in Wordpress but recently it stopped, I think because of a restart. All I could think of was to restart sendmail. I couldn't find sendmail in the normal directory (/etc/init.d/sendmail restart) but that didn't exist. I found another directory for sendmail in the sbin but every time I try running it it doesn't respond and I have to exit. This is all what I tried. Any ideas? • How can I work on a WordPress theme already installed in the root directory?

    - by Isaac Lubow
I have WordPress installed at the root level of a website. I thought it would be easy enough to have a "coming soon" page called default.html and edit the .htaccess file as follows: AddHandler php5-script .php DirectoryIndex default.html index.php # BEGIN WordPress # END WordPress ...so that visitors to the site are sent to the default page, and I could manually specify index.php as my destination for testing. (This isn't a high-security job.) But index.php is redirecting me to the default page. When I remove the DirectoryIndex line, the index.php file is found automatically by visitors to the site root, but... that's the page I was trying to hide. What am I doing wrong with .htaccess and how can I get it to behave the way I want?

  • What are the effects of the L root server now publishing DURZ?

    - by brent
I'm curious what the actual effects of the L root server publishing DURZ today will be. On the nanog mailing list, someone said it's important to evaluate the systemic effects of root name servers publishing signed zones, even when not using DNSSEC. Meanwhile, RIPE's own published information on their changes to the K root server say there's no issue if your resolvers don't use DNSSEC. Can someone please clear this up? DNSSEC seems to be a messy, tangled web. If not enabling DNSSEC on my resolvers, do I have anything to worry about with the upcoming changes to the root servers?

  • How do I Forward root's email to an external email address?

    - by ErebusBat
I have a small server (Ubuntu 10.04) at my house and I would like to forward root's email to my gmail hosted domain to get security notifications and what not. I ripped everything out and started from scratch and ran into some other issues. I now have sendmail working in the sense that I can mail [email protected] and get the mail. HOWEVER, adding an address to /root/.forward does not actually forward the message. I get the following in my logs: Dec 22 14:04:37 batcave sendmail[4695]: oBML4bAT004695: to=<root@batcave>, ctladdr=aburns (1000/1000), delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=relay, pri=30075, relay=[127.0.0.1] [127.0.0.1], dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent (oBML4bJ9004696 Message accepted for delivery) Dec 22 14:04:39 batcave sm-mta[4698]: STARTTLS=client, relay=[69.145.248.18], version=TLSv1/SSLv3, verify=FAIL, cipher=DES-CBC3-SHA, bits=168/168 Dec 22 14:04:40 batcave sm-mta[4698]: oBML4bJ9004696: to=<[email protected]>, ctladdr=<[email protected]> (1000/1000), delay=00:00:03, xdelay=00:00:03, mailer=relay, pri=120336, relay=[69.145.248.18] [69.145.248.18], dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent (OK 01/D4-00853-216621D4) You can see where my local sendmail instance accepts it then hands it off to my ISP, but with the wrong address ([email protected]).

  • Trouble with Samba Domain

    - by Arkevius
I'm having a bit of trouble setting up this Samba domain correctly. I'm getting an Access Denied error when trying to add a Windows XP machine to the domain. I'll go through my scenario in detail, but for those of you wanting a TLDR summary it'll be at the bottom of this post. I have HP Proliant server with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed. For this particular environment, I need this server to act as a PDC, file server, and print server. I began by updating and upgrading the packages (of course). Then went to install samba, gnome-desktop, wine, and cpanm. Samba was, of course, for the PDC and file/print services. The GUI was needed because a certain software has to be installed on there that needs a GUI. Wine was needed because the software is Windows-native. And cpanm was for a perl script I have running. For Samba, I went into the smb.conf file and enabled domain logons, changed the workgroup/domain name, the logon script for a per-group basis (netlogon/%g), enabled the netlogon and profiles share, and setup a couple of custom shares for the file service. The printer was added later, and seems to be working just fine. I then restarted the services, and used the net groupmap command to ensure my unix groups were mapped correctly to the Windows groups. After this, I went to a Windows box, and was able to successfully join the domain without a problem. After some fidgeting with the software to get it running on the win boxes from the server (it's a records management system program, which stores it's database files on the server), I went to add another computer to the domain. But now it's saying Access Denied. Before when I had this trouble it was because I forgot to add the group "machines" so Samba could create machine accounts. Thinking this was the case, I manually created the machine account to test this theory. However, it would still give me an Access Denied error. That must mean it has something to do with permissions now, correct? I've been fighting with this server for the past two weeks. If it's not one thing that;s wrong, then it's something else completely different. This would be the third time I've actually reinstalled everything to start over. I'll post snippets of my system settings below. If anything else is needed, just say the word and I'll gather up the info. The unix group 'domadmin' is the Domain Admins group. I'm using SequelPro (http://www.sequelpro.com/) and I would like to know how to reset my root password. I'm trying to log in as host: localhost username: root password: (BLANK) but I keep getting this error: Unable to connect to host because access was denied. Double-check your username and password and ensure that access from your current location is permitted. MySQL said: Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO) Any suggestions?!

  • Logfiles filling with iptables logging

    - by Peter I
    OS: Debian 6 Server Version I have different logfiles which are filling up: user@server:/var/log$ ls -lahS | head total 427G -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 267G Nov 2 17:29 bandwidth -rw-r----- 1 root adm 44G Nov 2 17:29 kern.log -rw-r----- 1 root adm 27G Nov 2 17:29 debug -rw-r----- 1 root adm 23G Oct 27 06:33 kern.log.1 -rw-r----- 1 root adm 17G Nov 2 17:29 messages -rw-r----- 1 root adm 14G Oct 27 06:33 debug.1 -rw-r----- 1 root adm 12G Nov 2 17:29 syslog -rw-r----- 1 root adm 12G Nov 1 06:26 syslog.1 -rw-r----- 1 root adm 9.0G Oct 27 06:33 messages.1 So I looked up the file /etc/iptables.up.rules which had those lines in it: -A FORWARD -o eth0 -j LOG --log-level 7 --log-prefix BANDWIDTH_OUT: -A FORWARD -i eth0 -j LOG --log-level 7 --log-prefix BANDWIDTH_IN: -A OUTPUT -o eth0 -j LOG --log-level 7 --log-prefix BANDWIDTH_OUT: -A INPUT -i eth0 -j LOG --log-level 7 --log-prefix BANDWIDTH_IN: So deleting those lines will solve my problem. But how would I edit those lines without losing their functionality?

  • Optimizing hierarchical transform

    - by Geotarget
I'm transforming objects in 3D space by transforming each vector with the object's 4x4 transform matrix. In order to achieve hierarchical transform, I transform the child by its own matrix, and then the child by the parent matrix. This becomes costly because objects deeper in the display tree have to be transformed by all the parent objects. This is what's happening, in summary: Root -- transform its verts by Root matrix Parent -- transform its verts by Parent, Root matrix Child -- transform its verts by Child, Parent, Root matrix Is there a faster way to transform vertices to achieve hierarchical transform? What If I first concatenated each transform matrix with the parent matrices, and then transform verts by that final resulting matrix, would that work and wouldn't that be faster? Root -- transform its verts by Root matrix Parent -- concat Parent, Root matrices, transform its verts by Concated matrix Child -- concat Child, Parent, Root matrices, transform its verts by Concated matrix
