• How to host WCF service and TCP server on same socket?

  Tooday I use ServiceHost for self hosting WCF cervices. I want to host near to my WCF services my own TCP programm for direct sockets operations (like lien to some sort of broadcasting TCP stream) I need control over namespaces (so I would be able to let my clients to send TCP streams directly into my service using some nice URLs like example.com:port/myserver/stream?id=1 or example.com:port/myserver/stream?id=anything and so that I will not be bothered with Idea of 1 client for 1 socket at one time moment, I realy want to keep my WCF services on the same port as my own server or what it is so to be able to call www.example.com:port/myWCF/stream?id=222...) Can any body please help me with this? I am using just WCF now. And I do not enjoy how it works. That is one of many resons why I want to start migration to clear TCP=) I can not use net-tcp binding or any sort of other cool WS-* binding (tooday I use the simpliest one so that my clients like Flash, AJAX, etc connect to me with ease). I needed Fast and easy in implemrnting connection protocol like one I created fore use with Sockets for real time hi ammount of data transfering. So.. Any Ideas? Please - I need help.

• Can I return JSON from an .asmx Web Service if the ContentType is not JSON?

  I would like to post a form using ajax and jquery to a .asmx webservice and return the value from the webservice as JSON. I'm using ASP.NET 4.0. I know that in order to return JSON from a webservice the following needs to be set (1) dataType: "json" (2) contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8", (3) type: "POST" (4) set the Data to something. I have tested this and it works fine (i.e. my webservice returns the data as JSON) if all *four are set*. But, lets say in my case I want to do a standard form post i.e. test1=value1&test2=value2 so the contentType is not JSON but I want back JSON {test1:value1}. This doesn't seem to work because the contentType is "application/x-www-form-urlencoded" not "application/json; charset=utf-8". Can anyone tell me why I can't do this? It seems crazy to me that you have to explicitly send JSON to get JSON back, yet if you don't use JSON (i.e. post urlencoded contenttype) then the webservice will return XML. Any insights are greatly appreciated :)

• Web Grid, Client side Binding VS. Server side HTML generation

  I'm working on replacing an existing web grid in an ASP.NET web application, with a new implementation. The existing grid is powerful, but not flexible enough. It also brings with it all kind of frameworks we don't like to have on our web pages. While looking into existing options I noticed I can break the available solutions into two main approaches. The older approach is represented best by the ASP.NET GridView. This is a classic ASP.NET control that generates the needed HTML on the server, based on a given set of data. The newer approach is depending on client side rendering, mainly with jQuery. A good example would be jqGrid. Only the data is sent to the client (Usually with JSON or XML) In the GridView case, if I want an AJAX behavior, I would have to implement it with something like an update panel. Is there a definitive choice I should make? Is there a good chance of achieving the same snappy behavior I get with jqGrid (even with many records), with server side rendered controls? Is there some hybrid implementation incorporating both approaches?

  I have an application that is running on Rials so now I want to add the text editor(FCKEditor/TinyMCE) to adit text/uploading images on website. I have google the internet until I got FCKeditor for Rails(http://rubyforge.org/projects/fckeditorp/) "which has a function of uploading pictures but ones you uploaded the images you can't delete/rename them :( " I tried to look for another solution and I got another FCKEditor - Ajax File Manager plugin for PHP(it works fine on my Rails Application) but the problem is I need some information from rails to use it in php e.g: session for the current login user. 1.) is there anyone got an Idea on how to get those Ruby sessions in php script? 2.) I looked at saving it in javascript session and access it in php via javascript cause both can talk to Javascript. 3.) or is there any Rails text editor which has a functionality of uploading/deleting the images? 4.) Or any better way of doing this... cause the only thing I need is the text editor that will allow me to uploaded/delete images NOt via the url but the one that will save the images on the server. • JSF 2.0 Dynamic Views

  Hello, I'm working on a web project which uses JSF 2.0, PrimeFaces and PrettyFaces as main frameworks / libraries. The pages have the following (common) structure: Header, Content, Footer. Header: The Header always contains the same menu. This menu is a custom component, which generates a recursive html <ul><li> list containing <a href="url"> html links, this is all rendered with a custom renderer. The link looks like 'domain.com/website/datatable.xhtml?ref=2'. Where the ref=2 used to load the correct content from the database. I use prettyfaces to store this request value in a backingbean. Question 1: Is it ok to render the <a href> links myself, or should I better add an HTMLCommandLink from my UIComponent and render that in the encodeBegin/End? Question 2: I think passing variables like this is not really the JSF 2.0 style, how to do this in a better way? Content: The content contains dynamic data. It can be a (primefaces) datatable, build with dynamic data from the database. It can also be a text page, also loaded from the database. Or a series of graphs. You got the point, it's dynamic. The content is based on the link pressed in the header menu. If the content is of type datatable, then I put the ref=2 variable to a DataTableBean (via prettyfaces), which then loads the correct datatable from the database. If the content is of type chart, I'll put it on the ChartBean. Question 3: Is this a normal setup? Ideally I would like to update my content via Ajax. I hope it's clear :)

• Writing a JavaScript zip code validation function

  I would like to write a JavaScript function that validates a zip code, by checking if the zip code actually exists. Here is a list of all zip codes: http://www.census.gov/tiger/tms/gazetteer/zips.txt (I only care about the 2nd column) This is really a compression problem. I would like to do this for fun. OK, now that's out of the way, here is a list of optimizations over a straight hashtable that I can think of, feel free to add anything I have not thought of: Break zipcode into 2 parts, first 2 digits and last 3 digits. Make a giant if-else statement first checking the first 2 digits, then checking ranges within the last 3 digits. Or, covert the zips into hex, and see if I can do the same thing using smaller groups. Find out if within the range of all valid zip codes there are more valid zip codes vs invalid zip codes. Write the above code targeting the smaller group. Break up the hash into separate files, and load them via Ajax as user types in the zipcode. So perhaps break into 2 parts, first for first 2 digits, second for last 3. Lastly, I plan to generate the JavaScript files using another program, not by hand. Edit: performance matters here. I do want to use this, if it doesn't suck. Performance of the JavaScript code execution + download time. Edit 2: JavaScript only solutions please. I don't have access to the application server, plus, that would make this into a whole other problem =)

  The code below show whiche thing that is failing in my appliaction. It is a quick add information form, fill out the form and submit it add a new entry into a database and synchronize my a databasle.. This is all done with ajax. The first form submission happens correctly but the second one fails to run the desired ActionListener. The second form is posting to the server though but the saveAction isn't invoke. As you will see, I'm a real beginner with this technologies ... • Bizarre Javascript JSON undefined error

  I'm experiencing an error that I haven't been able to find any mention of anywhere. I'm developing an AJAX-enabled WCF web service with ASP.NET. In my ASP.NET master page's , I included the json.js file, copied fresh from json.org. When I run the page, it fails (VS 2008 catches a Javascript exception) on the first line of code in json.js (following lots of comments), which is: JSON = JSON || {}; The error says that JSON is undefined: Microsoft JScript runtime error: 'JSON' is undefined Well, duh! That's why the line is testing if it's defined and if so setting it to an empty object! It is supposed to be undefined, right? Last I heard it was not an error in Javascript to perform such an operation on an undefined variable. Can anyone give me a clue as to what's going on here? I suspect it's something gone wrong elsewhere that's somehow causing this problem. I don't have deep experience with either Javascript or ASP.NET so it might be that I'm missing some common gotcha in the setup.

  I have a datagrid where a row can be deleted (using ajax). I'm have problem with the pager in the following scenario: Lets say my PageSize is 10, I have 101 rows so that's 11 pages with the last page with an single element. Let no assume that I'm on page 10 (PageIndex=9) and delete a row. Then I go to the 11'th page (who's now empty and doesn't really exist). ASP now shows me the EmptyDataTemplate and no pager so I can't go back. • Image URL not changing in Update panel

  Ok this is probably really simple but I have been staring at it for too long now. I have an AJAX AsyncFileUpload control that when a file is selected I want the Image next to it to change. • Do you like Twisted?

  I use Python Twisted for web development, and I don't like it? I know async programming is a great idea, I know there are may async web servers now, I know it's the only way to solve some problems you'd have with threads but I don't like. The problem is that, you're forced to program in a twisted way. So, the architecture you have in mind, very often have to be modified to fit the way twisted works. The architecture have to follow the technology, I don't think this is good. When we use callback in javascript, we don't have too many difficulties: things are usually simpler, we use a callback in response to an Ajax call. But in a server web app things are, very often, a bit more complex. Writing chain of callbacks don't seem to me a wonderful way of programming. The code is not simple, and so it is difficult to understand and to maintain. Writing twisted code we very often lost the linear intuitive idea of the algorithm we wanted to implement, especially when things grow in complexity. What's your point of view?

  I'm writing a small ajax class for personal use. In the class, I have a "post" method for sending post requests. The post method has a callback parameter. In the onreadystatechange propperty, I need to call the callback method. • jQuery: Stop browser scrolling on event update beyond the fold?

  I have several links at the bottom of my page that update content at the top of my page (more than a viewport away). Here's the gist of what the update looks like: $('#private-photo div').fadeOut(function() { $(this).html('<%= escape_javascript(image_tag current_user.private_photo.image.url(:profile)) %>'); }).fadeIn(); Basically it's just fading out the old content and fading in the new content. My problem is that when this happens, the browser window automatically scrolls up just far enough so that the bottom of the updated content (#private-photo div) appears at the top of the browser viewport. I do not want this to happen. I want the content to be updated (still fading in and out), but without the browser viewport realigning its focus. I want to keep the animation because if the user has a big enough screen, or if they are using a link closer to the top of the page, I still want them to see the animation. Any ideas about how to prevent the browser from scrolling as described? If not, any suggestions for workarounds? FYI, I have this same problem in Safari 4, Chrome (for Mac), & Firefox 3.5. • Dual usage of asp.net mvc and php under same domain

  Hello all, I've got a scenario where we have a customer who has a linux hosted php app (joomla) that they wish to integrate with some back-end asp.net mvc functionality that was created for a 'sister' site. Basically, the mvc site has prices and stock availability methods which (in the sister site) populates dropdown lists and other 'order' style info on the pages. I've been tasked with looking at the integration options to allow the php site to use this info as a 'service'. (as ever, these guys are looking at cost of ownership, maintenence etc, so this is their preferred route) Has anyone done anything similar with success?? I'd imagine (much like the sister site) liberal doses of ajax will be employed in order to populate portions of the page on demand. So this may have a bearing on any suggestions that you may have. Also, the methods that are being called ultimately end up populating the same database, so there are no issues with correlating the ID's across the different platforms. I don't really want to go down any 'iframe' type route if at all possible, tho' reality may dictate this as being an option. I'm possibly (naively) imagining that i could simply invoke the mvc functions directly from the php app with some sort of 'session' variable being passed for authentication. pretty tall order or pretty straightfwd?? cheers jim

• Javascript Rich Display Component/Methodology

  quick back story-- I am working on ASP.Net based template editor that lets authors create text templates using Javascript inserted placeholder tags that will be filled in with dynamic text when the templates are used to display the final results. For example the author might create a template like The word [%12#add] was generated dynamically. The application would eventually replace the tag with a dynamic word down the road (though it's not specifically relevant to this post) The word foo was generated dynmamically. Depending on the circumstances, the template may be created in a text input, textarea or a modified version of the Ajax Control Toolkit HTML Editor. There might be 40 or more of these editable elements on the page, so using lots of stripped down or modified HTML editors would probably bog the page down too much. The problem is that the tags such as [%12#add] are displayed inline with the user text and the result is confusing and aesthetically gross. The goal is parse the contens of the source element and when a tags such as [%12#add] are encountered, display something prettier and less cryptic to the user such as a stylable element or image wherever tags such as [%12#add] occur. The application still needs the template text with the tags on postback. So the user might see The word tag placeholder was generated dynamically. but the original template would still be the value of the text input box The word [%12#add] was generated dynamically. It seems HTML editors like the ACT version and FckEditor accomplish this by rendering their output in an IFrame, but rather than kill myself trying to roll a lighter specialized version myself, I thought I'd ask if anyone knows of an existing free component or approach that has already tackled this. With good reason, I don't think S.O. allows HTML formatting, but the bold "tag placeholder" above would ideally be something like tag placeholder.
