  • JUnit Test method with randomized nature

    Hey, I'm working on a small project for myself at the moment and I'm using it as an opportunity to get acquainted with unit testing and maintaining proper documentation. I have a Deck class with represents a deck of cards (it's very simple and, to be honest, I can be sure that it works without a unit test, but like I said I'm getting used to using unit tests) and it has a shuffle() method which changes the order of the cards in the deck. The implementation is very simple and will certainly work: public void shuffle() { Collections.shuffle(this.cards); } But, how could I implement a unit test for this method. My first thought was to check if the top card of the deck was different after calling shuffle() but there is of course the possibility that it would be the same. My second thought was to check if the entire order of cards has changed, but again they could possibly be in the same order. So, how could I write a test that ensures this method works in all cases? And, in general, how can you unit test methods for which the outcome depends on some randomness? Cheers, Pete

  • What is the best approach to 2D collision detection on the iPhone?

    Been working on this problem of collision detection and there appears to be 3 main approaches I could take: Sprite and mask approach. (AND the overlap of the sprites and check for a non-zero number in the resulting sprite pixel data). Bounding circles, rectangles or polygons. (Create one or more shapes that enclose the sprites and do the basic maths to check for overlaps). Use an existing sprite library. The first approach, even though it would have been the way I would have done it in the old days of 16x16 sprite blocks, it appears that there just isn’t an easy way of getting at the individual image pixel data and/or alpha channel within Quartz (or OPENGL for that matter). Detecting the overlap of the bounding box is easy, but then creating a 3rd image from the overlap and then testing it for pixels is complicated and my gut feel is that even if we could get it to work would be slow. Am I missing something neat here? The second approach involves dividing up our sprites into several polygons and testing them for overlaps. The more polygons the more accurate the collision detection. The benefit is that it is fast, and can be accurate. The downside is it makes the sprite creation more complicated. i.e., we have to create the polygons for each sprite. For speed the best approach is to create a tree of polygons. The 3rd approach I’m not sure about as it involves buying code (or using an open source licence). I am not sure what the best library to use is or whether this would make life easier or give us a problem integrating this into our app. So in short I am favouring the polygon and tree approach and would appreciate you views on this before I go and write lots of code.   • NSUserDefaults: Saved Number Always 0, iPhone

    Hello all, I have looked at other answers and the docs. Maybe I am missing something, or maybe I have another issue. I am trying to save a number on exiting the app, and then when the app is loaded I want to check if this value exists and take action accordingly.   • Arrow keys and changing control's focus hang the application

    I have a usercontrol that contains a FlowLayoutPanel (topdown flow) with a bunch of radiobuttons. The control exposes a CheckedChanged event that fires whenever one of the radiobuttons's check changed. My form contains the usercontrol and a textbox. I subscribe the usercontrol's CheckedChanged event and depending on which radiobutton gets checked, I either disable the textbox or put a focus inside the textbox. All this works fine with mouseclick when changing the radiobutton's check state. However, this will hang indefinitely when using the arrow keys. I don't understand why the difference. The following are steps to reproduce the behavior I'm seeing: Create a usercontrol and drop a FlowLayoutPanel control and set its FlowDirection = TopDown. Then add two radiobuttons to the FlowLayoutPanel. Provide an event handler in the usercontrol public event EventHandler CheckedChanged { add { radioButton2.CheckedChanged += value; } remove { radioButton2.CheckedChanged -= value; } } Create a windows form and drop the above user control. Add a textbox and set Enabled to False. Subscribe to the usercontrol's CheckedChanged event as follows private void userControl11_CheckedChanged(object sender, EventArgs e) { textBox1.Select(); } Run. Notice that if you use the mouse to click between the radiobuttons, thing works fine; but it will crash if you use the up/down arrow keys.

  • Whats a valid strategy for a secure image upload from a flash client?

    Hi all - I'm creating a flash application that will post images to a url for saving to disk/display later. I was wondering what are some suggested strategies for making this secure enough so that the upload is verified as coming from the application and not just some random form post. Is it reliable enough to check referring location realizing that I don't need bulletproof security, or perhaps setting authentication headers is a better strategy even though it seems unreliable from what I have read.     I ran into troubles with MySQL on my CentOS. I had some problems and backed up my database and removed mysql with all dependencies. After that I ran reinstalled: yum groupinstall "MySQL Database" Installed without errors. Running the mysql daemon: service mysqld start Timeout error occurred trying to start MySQL Daemon. Starting MySQL: [FAILED] I also ran # /usr/bin/mysql_install_db --user=mysql Installing MySQL system tables... 120112 1:49:44 [ERROR] Error message file '/usr/share/mysql/english/errmsg.sys' had only 480 error messages, but it should contain at least 481 error messages. Check that the above file is the right version for this program! 120112 1:49:44 [ERROR] Aborting Installation of system tables failed! Examine the logs in /var/lib/mysql for more information. You can try to start the mysqld daemon with: /usr/libexec/mysqld --skip-grant & and use the command line tool /usr/bin/mysql to connect to the mysql database and look at the grant tables: shell> /usr/bin/mysql -u root mysql mysql> show tables Try 'mysqld --help' if you have problems with paths.   • How can I access a byte array as shorts in Java

    I have a an array of byte, size n, that really represents an array of short of size n/2. Before I write the array to a disk file I need to adjust the values by adding bias values stored in another array of short. In C++ I would just assign the address of the byte array to a pointer for a short array with a cast to short and use pointer arithmetic or use a union. How may this be done in Java - I'm very new to Java BTW.

  • Simple Database normalization question...

    Hi all, I have a quick question regarding a database that I am designing and making sure it is normalized... I have a customer table, with a primary key of customerId. It has a StatusCode column that has a code which reflects the customers account status ie. 1 = Open, 2 = Closed, 3 = Suspended etc... Now I would like to have another field in the customer table that flags whether the account is allowed to be suspended or not... certain customers will be automatically suspended if they break there trading terms... others not... so the relevant table fields will be as so: Customers (CustomerId(PK):StatusCode:IsSuspensionAllowed) Now both fields are dependent on the primary key as you can not determine the status or whether suspensions are allowed on a particular customer unless you know the specific customer, except of course when the IsSuspensionAllowed field is set to YES, the the customer should never have a StatusCode of 3 (Suspended). It seems from the above table design it is possible for this to happen unless a check contraint is added to my table. I can't see how another table could be added to the relational design to enforce this though as it's only in the case where IsSuspensionAllowed is set to YES and StatusCode is set to 3 when the two have a dependence on each other. So after my long winded explanation my question is this: Is this a normalization problem and I'm not seeing a relational design that will enforce this... or is it actually just a business rule that should be enforced with a check contraint and the table is in fact still normalized.   • Moving from a non-clustered PK to a clustered PK in SQL 2005

    HI all, I recently asked this question in another thread, and thought I would reproduce it here with my solution: What if I have an auto-increment INT as my non-clustered primary key, and there are about 15 foreign keys defined to it ? (snide comment about original designer being braindead in the original :) ) This is a 15M row table, on a live database, SQL Standard, so dropping indexes is out of the question. Even temporarily dropping the foreign key constraints will be difficult. I'm curious if anybody has a solution that causes minimal downtime. I tested this in our testing environment and finally found that the downtime wasn't as severe as I had originally feared. I ended up writing a script that drops all FK constraints, then drops the non-clustered key, re-creates the PK as a clustered index, and finally re-created all FKs WITH NOCHECK to avoid trawling through all FKs to check constraint compliance. Then I just enable the CHECK constraints to enable constraint checking from that point onwards, and all is dandy :) The most important thing to realize is that during the time the FKs are absent, there MUST NOT be any INSERTs or DELETEs on the parent table, as this may break the constraints and cause issues in the future. The total time taken for clustering a 15M row, 800MB index was ~4 minutes :)

I uninstall the old SDk and double click the .dmg file then i got a popup stating that "The following Disk Images couldnt found" and "xcode_3.2.2.2_and_iPhone_SDK_3.2_final.dmg is not recognized".   • How can I pre-compress files with mod_deflate in Apache 2.x?

    I am serving all content through apache with Content-Encoding: zip but that compresses on the fly. A good amount of my content is static files on the disk. I want to gzip the files beforehand rather than compressing them every time they are requested. This is something that, I believe, mod_gzip did in Apache 1.x automatically, but just having the file with .gz next to it. That's no longer the case with mod_deflate.

    Okay, we have a PHP script that creates an download link from a file and we want to download that file via C#. This works fine with progress etc but when the PHP page gives an error the program downloads the error page and saves it as the requested file.   • Checking whether images loaded after page load

    Determining whether an image has loaded reliably seems to be one of the great JavaScript mysteries. I have tried various scripts/script libraries which check the onload and onerror events but I have had mixed and unreliable results. Can I reliably just check the complete property (IE 6-8 and Firefox) as I have done in the script below? I simply have a page wich lists out servers and I link to an on.gif on each server. If it doesn't load I just want to load an off.gif instead.     I have a table with list of cycle codes.CYCLE_DEFINITION. each and every cycle_code has 12 months entries in another table(PM1_CYCLE_STATE). This will result in all the cycle_codes with exactly 4 rows for current month and future 3 months. Now the requirement is if any of the month is missing.how could i show it? for eg: the output of the above query is cycd cm 102 1 102 10 102 11 102 12 103 1 103 10 103 11 103 12 104 1 104 10 104 11 104 12 Now lets say the row with cycd=104 and cm=11 is not present in the table,then the above query will not get the row 104 11. I want to display only those rows. how could i do it?

However my php validation says the strlen() is longer than my js is essentially saying. So for example if i type a solid string and it says 0 or 3 chars left till 255. I then click save and the php gives me the length as being 261. Any ideas? Is it to do with special characters, bit sizes that js reads differently or misses out? Or is it to do with something else?   • Python - Checking for membership inside nested dict

    heya, This is a followup questions to this one: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2901422/python-dictreader-skipping-rows-with-missing-columns Turns out I was being silly, and using the wrong ID field. I'm using Python 3.x here. I have a dict of employees, indexed by a string, "directory_id". Each value is a nested dict with employee attributes (phone number, surname etc.). One of these values is a secondary ID, say "internal_id", and another is their manager, call it "manager_internal_id". The "internal_id" field is non-mandatory, and not every employee has one. (I've simplified the fields a little, both to make it easier to read, and also for privacy/compliance reasons). The issue here is that we index (key) each employee by their directory_id, but when we lookup their manager, we need to find managers by their "internal_id". Before, when employee.keys() was a list of internal_ids, I was using a membership check on this. Now, the last part of my if statement won't work, since the internal_ids is part of the dict values, instead of the key itself. def lookup_supervisor(manager_internal_id, employees): if manager_internal_idis not None and manager_internal_id!= "" and manager_internal_id in employees.keys(): return (employees[manager_internal_id]['mail'], employees[manager_internal_id]['givenName'], employees[manager_internal_id]['sn']) else: return ('Supervisor Not Found', 'Supervisor Not Found', 'Supervisor Not Found') So the first question is, how do I check whether the manager_internal_id is present in the dict's values. I've tried substituting employee.keys() with employee.values(), that didn't work. Also, I'm hoping for something a little more efficient, not sure if there's a way to get a subset of the values, specifically, all the entries for employees[directory_id]['internal_id']. Hopefully there's some Pythonic way of doing this, without using a massive heap of nested for/if loops. My second question is, how do I then cleanly return the required employee attributes (mail, givenname, surname etc.). My for loop is iterating over each employee, and calling lookup_supervisor. Now i have a cachingservice, and it has this declaration: public static void AddToCache<T>(T model, double millisecs, string cacheId) where T : class public static T GetFromCache<T>(string cacheId) where T : class So in a place where i want to cache some data, i check if it exists in the cache (with GetFromCache) and if not, get the data from somewhere, and the add it to the cache (with AddToCache) Now i want to extend the AddToCache method with a parameter, which is the class+method to call to get the data Then the declaration would be like this public static void AddToCache<T>(T model, double millisecs, string cacheId, Func/Delegate methode) where T : class Then this method could check wether the cache has data or not, and if not, get the data itself via the method it got provided. Then in the calling code i could say: AddToCache<Person>(p, 10000, "Person", new PersonService().GetPersonById(1)); AddToCache<Advert>(a, 100000, "Advert", new AdvertService().GetAdverts(3)); What i want to achieve is that the 'if cache is empty get data and add to cache' logic is placed on only one place. I hope this makes sense :) Oh, by the way, the question is: is this possible?

    In my website project. I need to rename or remove some folder by code. Sometimes I can do all of that, but sometimes I cannot with error: Access to the path is denied Try to find to solution on Google. May be, there are two reason: The permisstion of that Folder Some subFolder or some file in that Folder that's being held open. Try to check: Right click on Folder- Properties-- Security: if this is the right way to check the permission, the Folder allowes every action (read, write....) There are no file, no subfolder of that Folder is opened. Why? I still dont understant why sometimes I can rename folder but sometimes I cannot. Help!! I need your opinions!!!     Hi, I have written couple of custom rules in for fxcop 1.36. I have written a code to find weather opened datareader is closed or not. But it does not check which datareader object is calling the close() method so I can't be sure if all opened datareader objs are closed!! 2nd: if I am using data reader in IF else like if 1=2 dr = cmd.executeReader(); else dr = cmd2.execureReader(); end if in this case it will search for 2 datareader objects to be closed..   • Parsing a JSON feed from YQL using jQuery

    I am using YQL's query.multi to grab multiple feeds so I can parse a single JSON feed with jQuery and reduce the number of connections I'm making. In order to parse a single feed, I need to be able to check the type of result (photo, item, entry, etc) so I can pull out items in specific ways. Because of the way the items are nested within the JSON feed, I'm not sure the best way to loop through the results and check the type and then loop through the items to display them.
