• How can I tell Visual Studio to NOT BREAK on a particular exception?

  I have a particular type of exception that I would like Visual Studio to not catch with the Exception Assistant. Essentially I would like it just to let my normal exception handling infrastructure deal with it. The exception is an inheritor of System.Exception which I wrote and have the source code for. Any where this is thrown I want VS to not catch it, ie it is not useful to just supress a single throw new BlahException(); in code. This is because the exception is thrown a lot, and I don't want to have to supress every single instance individually. In case it makes a difference I am on Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate, Framework 3.5 SP1.

• How can I retrieve the value of a PASTE (copy-pasta) event in a GWT TextBox?

  Hello fellow SO members, I want to prevent the user from copy-pasting values in my TextBox IF AND ONLY IF the values do not respect a certain condition. For instance, I created a DigitsOnlyTextBox which will be used for phone numbers. I already made it so only Character.isDigit characters can be typed into the box, and the user cannot copy-paste values into it, using : this.sinkEvents(Event.ONPASTE); and public void onBrowserEvent(Event event) { super.onBrowserEvent(event); // Permet d'empêcher le copier-coller, donc d'entrer des caractères non-numériques if (event.getTypeInt() == Event.ONPASTE) { event.stopPropagation(); event.preventDefault(); } } But I'd like to verify if the copy-pasted String is "digits only" and if so, let the event happen (therefore the text added). tl;dr : see title Thank you for your time.   Hi All, I am trying to automate installation of an application using Pywinauto.During the installation the last window shows some warning or error messages in few cases and later the system begins to restart.My objective is to capture the the Warning messages which is possible by app.top_window_()._ctrl_identifiers() np.Notepad.Edit.TypeKeys(a,with_spaces=True, with_tabs=True, with_newlines=True) This is returning a list which contains all the messages of the screen. • The Java interface doesn't declare any exception. How to manage checked exception of the implementat

  Let's say I have the following Java interface that I may not modify: public interface MyInterface { public void doSomething(); } And now the class implementing it is like this: class MyImplementation implements MyInterface { public void doSomething() { try { // read file } catch (IOException e) { // what to do? } } } I can't recover from not reading the file. A subclass of RuntimeException can clearly help me, but I'm not sure if it's the right thing to do: the problem is that that exception would then not be documented in the class and a user of the class would possibly get that exception an know nothing about solving this. What can I do?

  I'm currently using jQuery to restrict a text box to number only input as follows: $('input.numbersOnly').keyup(function () { this.value = this.value.replace(/[^0-9\.]/g,''); }); I'd like to let the user know that what they are typing is being rejected by changing the background color of the field. I know that I can change the background of a field using something like this: $('input.numbersOnly').addClass('alertClass'); My question is, how do I combine the two code examples above so that the color of the field changes as the character is getting replaced? My goal is to alert the user that something is wrong with their input as they type it in the field. Thanks!

  I've created a domain class in Grails like this: class MyObject { static hasMany = [tags: String] // Have to declare this here, as nullable constraint does not seem to be honoured Set tags = new HashSet() static constraints = { tags(nullable: false) } } Writing unit tests to check the size and content of the MyObject.tags property, I found I had to do the following: assertLength(x, myObject.tags as Object[]) assertEquals(new HashSet([...]), myObject.tags) To make the syntax nicer for writing the tests, I implemented the following methods: void assertEquals(List expected, Set actual) { assertEquals(new HashSet(expected), actual) } void assertLength(int expected, Set set) { assertLength(expected, set as Object[]) } I can now call the assertLength() and assertEquals() methods directly on an instance of Set, e.g. assertLength(x, myObject.tags) assertEquals([...], myObject.tags) I'm new to Groovy and Grails, so unaware how dangerous method overloading like this is. Is it safe? If so, I'm slightly* surprised that these methods (or similar) aren't already available - please let me know if they are. * I can see how these methods could also introduce ambiguity if people weren't expecting them. E.g. assertLength(1, set) always passes, no matter what the content of set

• how to hightlight a div if the page.isvalid=false.

  I wanna high light particular div when the page.isvalid=false. on the pageload i am able to get display the error message. But the issue is that i am not able to highlight the control which is required. I have a js function which sets the error class to the div. Its working fine when i click on a button. • Using enums or a set of classes when I know I have a finite set of different options?

  Let's say I have defined the following class: public abstract class Event { public DateTime Time { get; protected set; } protected Event(DateTime time) { Time = time; } } What would you prefer between this: public class AsleepEvent : Event { public AsleepEvent(DateTime time) : base(time) { } } public class AwakeEvent : Event { public AwakeEvent(DateTime time) : base(time) { } } and this: public enum StateEventType { NowAwake, NowAsleep } public class StateEvent : Event { protected StateEventType stateType; public MealEvent(DateTime time, StateEventType stateType) : base(time) { stateType = stateType; } } and why? I am generally more inclined to the first option, but I can't explain why. Is it totally the same or are any advantages in using one instead of the other? Maybe with the first method its easier to add more "states", altough in this case I am 100% sure I will only want two states: now awake, and now asleep (they signal the moments when one awakes and one falls asleep).

  hello to all, my client wants to play a flash video in their website. just to make sure i understand correctly, i need to: 1. create an FLV file 2. use either some flv player or wrap the flv inside swf questions: 1. the player option - will visitor have to download /install it or is it install only once, in the website itself? any FREE player you can recommend the will ensure cross browser compatibility? swf option: will i need the flash application in order to do the wrapping? will i be able to later use something like flashobject library for the actual embedding? what are the main considerations for choosing between the two options , if indeed these are the options? any help would be highly appreciated. have a nice day and let's pray for a lot of goals today :-)

• Counts of events grouped by date in python?

  This is no doubt another noobish question, but I'll ask it anyways: I have a data set of events with exact datetime in UTC. I'd like to create a line chart showing total number of events by day (date) in the specified date range. Right now I can retrieve the total data set for the needed date range, but then I need to go through it and count up for each date. The app is running on google app engine and is using python. What is the best way to create a new data set showing date and corresponding counts (including if there were no events on that date) that I can then use to pass this info to a django template? Data set for this example looks like this: class Event(db.Model): event_name = db.StringProperty() doe = db.DateTimeProperty() dlu = db.DateTimeProperty() user = db.UserProperty() Ideally, I want something with date and count for that date. I have a Qt GUI application (written by me), let's call it QtAPP.exe When QtAPP.exe running, I will use a QThread and QProcess to execute some external file, such as player.exe (written in native C). Here's my question: In QtAPP.exe, there are 2 classes, 1. QMainWindow - Core of QtAPP.exe 2. QThread - A thread class to execute external things For now, if I got a finished() signal in that QThread, how do I to force the QMainWindow to repaint itself ?   Hello, example use of "xargs" application in Unix can be something like this: ls | xargs echo which is the same as (let's say I have "someFile" and "someDir/" in the working dir): echo someFile someDir so "xargs" take its "input" and place it "at the end" of the next command (here at the end of echo). But sometimes I want xargs to place its input somewhere "in the middle" of next command. For example: find . -type f -name "*.cpp" -print | xargs g++ -o outputFile so if I had in the current directory files "a.cpp" "b.cpp" "c.cpp" the output would be the same as with the command: g++ -o outputFile a.cpp b.cpp c.cpp but I want to have something like this: g++ a.cpp b.cpp c.cpp -o outputFile Is there a way to do it? P.S.: I need it in some cases, because e.g.: i586-mingw32msvc-g++ -o outputFile `pkg-config --cflags --libs gtkmm-2.4` a.cpp b.cpp c.cpp doesn't work but this one works fine: i586-mingw32msvc-g++ a.cpp b.cpp c.cpp -o outputFile `pkg-config --cflags --libs gtkmm-2.4` Thanks. • How do you map a composite id to a composite user type with Fluent NHibernate?

  i'm working w/ a legacy database is set-up stupidly with an index composed of a char id column and two char columns which make up a date and time, respectively. I have created a icompositeusertype for the date and time columns to map to a single .NET DateTime property on my entity, which works by itself when not part of the id. i need to somehow use a composite id with key property mapping that includes my icompositeusertype for mapping to the two char date and time columns. Apparently w/ my version of Fluent NHibernate, CompositeIdentityPart doesn't have a CustomTypeIs() method, so i can't just do the following in my override: mapping.UseCompositeId() .WithKeyProperty(x => x.Id, CommonDatabaseFieldNames.Id) .WithKeyProperty(x => x.FileCreationDateTime) .CustomTypeIs<FileCreationDateTimeType>(); is something like this even possible w/ NHibernate let alone Fluent? I haven't been able to find anything on this.

• Is it ok to Swallow SocketExceptions in some situations?

  Let's say I've programmed an application which connects to a server using the Socket Class (TCP). If I encounter a SocketException while reading or writing, then obviously I have to do go ahead and run a disconnection routine to change the application's state to Disconnected. But what if I've started to Disconnect, and while I'm cleaning up, a SocketException occurs? The SocketException doesn't really mean anything to me, as I was going to shutdown the socket myself anyway.. so is it ok to swallow it? I really want to know what the best practice for this situation is.

  I am looking for a portable way to implement lazy evaluation in C++ for logging class. Let's say that I have a simple logging function like void syslog(int priority, const char *format, ...); then in syslog() function we can do: if (priority < current_priority) return; so we never actually call the formatting function (sprintf). On the other hand, if we use logging stream like log << LOG_NOTICE << "test " << 123; all the formating is always executed, which may take a lot of time. Is there any possibility to actually use all the goodies of ostream (like custom << operator for classes, type safety, elegant syntax...) in a way that the formating is executed AFTER the logging level is checked ?

• Detecting a message box opened in another application

  I am developing a windows service, in vb .et, that launches a legacy application that performs some work. The service acts as a wrapper around the legacy app allowing users to automate an otherwise manual operation. Everything is working great, except occasionally the legacy app displays a messagebox. When it does this the process halts until the message box is closed. As the service will be running on a server there will be no user to close the message box. The service launches the legacy application in a System.Diagnostics.Process. My question is, is there way to detect that a message box has been displayed by a process that I have started using System.Diagnostics.Process and is there a way to through code to close the messagebox. I've tried to be brief so if you need more information please let me know. Thanks in advance Richie

• What theoretical and/or experimental programming-language features are there?

  I'm designing a programming language, purely for fun, and want to add as many experimental features as I can, just to make programming in it something completely different, and that not in a bad way like Brainf*ck or Malbolge. However, I seem to be quite bad at coming up with new things for it but I'm sure that there are tons of things out there that have been talked about but never really tried out. What experimental language features or concepts not implemented in mainstream languages are there at the moment? E.g: If I asked this in, let's say, 1960, an answer could be "Object-oriented programming". I'm sure that there are a lot of unimplemented ideas computer-scientists have (recently) come up with, at least I was told so.

• Secondary thread causes startup delay

  In my didFinishLaunchingWithOptions method I spawn a thread to perform some maintenance on my core data store. However, this increases the startup time by half a second. The startup view is a tableview which draws its content from the same store. If I let the thread sleep for a second, the startup time improves drastically. I would like to understand why the second thread is blocking/delaying the main thread. Is it because both are trying to access the store (The second thread has its own store coordinator and context) or another reason (e.g. dont spawn threads in didFinishLaunching)?

• Is there an easy way to concatenate several lines of text into a string without constantly appending

  So I essentially need to do this: String text = "line1\n"; text += "line2\n"; text += "line3\n"; useString( text ); There is more involved, but that's the basic idea. Is there anything out there that might let me do something more along the lines of this though? DesiredStringThinger text = new DesiredStringThinger(); text.append( "line1" ); text.append( "line2" ); text.append( "line3" ); useString( text.toString() ); Obviously, it does not need to work exactly like that, but I think I get the basic point across. There is always the option of writing a loop which processes the text myself, but it would be nice if there is a standard Java class out there that already does something like this rather than me needing to carry a class around between applications just so I can do something so trivial. • Decimal rounding strategies in enterprise applications

  Well, I am wondering about a thing with rounding decimals, and storing them in DB. Problem is like this: Let's say we have a customer and a invoice. The invoice has total price of $100.495 (due to some discount percentage which is not integer number), but it is shown as $100.50 (when rounded, just for print on invoice). It is stored in the DB with the price of $100.495, which means that when customer makes a deposit of $100.50 it will have $0.005 extra on the account. If this is rounded, it will appear as $0, but after couple of invoices it would keep accumulating, which would appear wrong (although it actually is not). What is best to do in this case. Store the value of $100.50, or leave everything as-is?
