• QR Codes Printing, but Not Printing Correctly - Any Ideas?

  I am mail merging some QR codes via file paths stored in Excel into a label template in MS Word 2013. I have the whole process with the Ctrl+F9 working properly, but I am stumped on this: On the 30 label sheet I am trying to print I have 6 labels that are repeating information, and stored in duplicated rows in Excel for this print job. All of the labels have 2 images on them, one is a logo and the other one is a unique QR code for that person. For the first set of 6 labels that print out, everything works perfect. However, from the 2nd time the information is printed onward all of the merged fields and logo look correct, but the QR codes are printing strangely. Basically it's the QR code as I want it, but with a copy of itself covering the top left 25% of the QR code. Print preview doesn't show this happening, only once it's printed does it come out like this. I've been trying everything I can think of to fix this and don't know what to do. So far I've: Recreated the document several times, tried duplicating the images in the source folder and giving the links in the Excel document new file paths in case the mail merge feeding from the same .jpg was an issue (even though it's not a problem with the logo) Any help or insight is greatly appreciate because this is a test run for a larger batch run that I need to get done soon :( Thank you!

• Managing SharePoint permissions via Active Directory?

  My company has thousands of employees organized thoroughly via Active Directory. I have confidence in the accuracy of the Department and Title information displayed in the user profiles. I'm helping to put up a brand new SharePoint 2007 site, and I contacted IT about managing the site's permissions through AD Groups. The goal is to have the site automatically assign read/write/contribute/whatever permissions based on the information in AD. For example, we could create an AD Group called "Managers" that would contain anyone with the "Manager" title in their AD user profile. I would have SharePoint tap into this AD Group to mass assign permissions if I knew all managers would need a certain level of access (read/write/contribute/whatever). Then if a manager joins the company or leaves it, the group is automatically updated (provided AD gets updated, of course). My IT rep called back and said it couldn't be done. This seems like a pretty straightforward business requirement, and one of the huge benefits of having Active Directory, but maybe I'm mistaken. Could anyone shed some light on this? A) Is it possible to use dynamically-updated AD Groups when assigning permissions via SharePoint? (Does anyone know of a guide I could show my doubtful IT rep?) B) Is there a "best practice" way to go about this? I've read some debate on whether SharePoint Groups or AD Groups are the way to go. My main concern is dynamic updating. C) If this isn't available out of the box, can someone recommend third-party software that will provide the functionality I'm looking for? A big thanks to anyone who can help me out!!

• Vimperator; how to hide scrollbars on tabbar?

  Since the release of the latest version of firefox, I've been having an issue where Vimperator will show scrollbars on its tab-bar. I can't find any relevant options in Vimperator's docs or via googling. The only option that looked remotely relevant was the "scrollbars" setting, but that just determines whether I get scrollbars on Firefox's content window... Is there any particular setting I have to use to hide scrollbars from the tab-bar? (I'm using Waterfox on Win8)

• Why are my Windows 7 updates continuously failing?

  I'm an advanced level user here with an odd issue. I have two Windows Updates that are failing to install, every single time. I'm getting a mysterious "Code 1" error on both updates, an error for which I'm having difficulty finding a solution. The updates in question are: Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538243) System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [May 2011] Because these updates are failing, the Shut Down button in my start menu always has the shield icon next to it, indicating that "new" updates will be installed on shut down. • "Dictionary problem." Error with VMPlayer

  I'm pretty new to using vmware virtualization (been a virtualbox user) so I'm hoping you guys can help me out. I recently got an external usb disk containing a vm for a client, downloaded vmplayer, set it up with "Open a Virtual Machine", ran it, easy as pie. After working with it a bit this morning, I shut the VM down and now trying to start it back up again I get this: I tried removing the vm from my library, now it happens whenever I try to add it back in. In the meantime, I can still access other virtual machines so it seems like the problem might be with the virtual disk. So two questions: This is obviously not a very helpful error message. Where can I go to get more information? My Application EventLog doesn't contain anything from VMWare. What steps can I take to fix the problem? Edit: A couple more pieces of information. I did not take any snapshots. I don't think VM Player even has that ability. I have a zip file of (what I assume) is the state of the VM when it was sent to me. I cannot unzip it as it is huge and simply requires more HD space than I have available but I did extract the vmx file and examine it. Other than the UUIDs and the fact that mine reads cleanShutdown = "FALSE" they are identical. • FreeBSD with 64 CPUs

  I have a quad socket octo-core system running FreeBSD. Currently, I need to turn off HyperThreading to get it to boot, as FreeBSD only supports 32 CPUs. There were some patches made awhile ago against a trunk version of 8.1, but even after modifying them slightly to work and compile with 8.1-RELEASE, the machine wouldn't boot. Has there been any progress here? I can't find much good information about it, Google thinks I'm talking about 64-bit architecture and not literally 64 CPUs.

• Windows 7 Explorer: how to show total size of all files in current folder?

  In Windows XP Explorer one can turn on Status Bar which shows, among other things, the total size of all the files in the current folder, or if the cumulative size of the selected files. How do I get the same at-a-glance information in Windows 7? Selecting files doesn't count as it stops after 15 files, and it's rare that I'm concerned about total size with that few files (it's pretty easy to estimate in my head). thanks. UPDATE: Information derived from the context menu (select r-click properties) isn't "at a glance", and not as smooth as selecting files and clicking the details link at the bottom in any case. Thank you for fleshing out more of the available routes though. Yes Q19232 is similar to this one, though it is not a duplicate. That question is about looking for easy free-space on disk stats and this one is easy used-space by contents of this folder stats. The answer for both is the same though. You can't! Hopefully someone will figure how to get this lost feature back with a shell extension or something.

  I have a situation where my hosts file is constantly changing. Because of this I don't want clients to cache ip addresses resolved using the hosts file. Here is the command that starts dnsmasq for me: /usr/sbin/dnsmasq -K -R -y -Z -b -E -S 8.8.8.8 -l /tmp/dhcp.leases -r /tmp/resolv.conf.auto --stop-dns-rebind --rebind-localhost-ok --dhcp-range=lan,192.168.2.2,192.168.2.249,255.255.255.0,12h -2 eth0 In looking at this site: http://www.thekelleys.org.uk/dnsmasq/docs/dnsmasq-man.html I see that the -T option has this description: -T, --local-ttl=<time> When replying with information from /etc/hosts or the DHCP leases file dnsmasq by default sets the time-to-live field to zero, meaning that the requester should not itself cache the information. This is the correct thing to do in almost all situations. This option allows a time-to-live (in seconds) to be given for these replies. This will reduce the load on the server at the expense of clients using stale data under some circumstances. My command doesn't have the -T option. Do I need it or does dnsmasq default TTL to zero without it?

• Computer won't start after installing new video card

  So, 1 year and 340 days ago I bought a desktop computer. Since then, it has served me well. But lately, I wanted an upgrade, so I bought a new video card. I documented myself about the compatibility, and it is okay. So I opened the case, cleaned up that... dust elemental living inside of it. Unscrewed the plastic thingie on the outside to unscrew the old video card. Because of the stupid arrangement of the ports, I had to unscrew the motherboard to unplug it. So I unscrewed it, removed the old card, put in the new one, moved the motherboard back, screwed it back in, screwed the video card on the holder... thingie, and screwed the plastic thingie back in. Everything went smoothly, nothing had to be forced in/out. I connected the external power supply, closed the computer case, put the tower back in it's place and all the cables back in. When I pressed the power button, the LED turned... some color I can't distinguish. It stayed that way for a second, and then it went off. I tried a bunch of things, including permuting the external power supply arrangement (1 connection, 2 connections and no connections), with no success. And here are some of the specifications: Motherboard manufacturer: Asrock Processor: AMD Athlon II X2 3.0 GHz RAM: 2 x 2GB (had only 1 initially, bought the second plate a bit later) OLD video card: AMD Radeon HD 5450 NEW video card: Gigabyte nVidia GeForce GTX 650 GPU, 1GB GDDR5 128bit PCI-E, Dual-link DVI-Dx2 / HDMI / D-Sub Power supply: 450W + all the requirements I managed to find on the internet are met (+12V 18A or something) More specific information is stored... On that computer. If required, I may open the case again and read the stickers to find more specific information. I can also provide photos if necessary. Any ideas? Suggestions? Something? :|

• Can you help me understand my SATA/RAID options?

  I've a gigabyte GA-M720-US3 motherboard. Recently, I noticed the following during boot: IDE channel 0 Master (none) IDE channel 0 Slave (none) IDE channel 2 Master (my hdd) IDE channel 2 Slave (my dvd drive) IDE channel 3 Master (none) IDE channel 3 Slave (none) Of course, the same information is contained in the BIOS/CMOS. The HDD is connected to the mobo via a SATA(2?) cable at the port(?) labeled SATA2_0. The DVD drive is connected by a similar cable at SATA2_1. Why doesn't the information displayed during the boot and in BIOS reflect how I plugged the cables in? I mean, why "none" for channel 0 when there is something in SATA2_0. (or is that serious naivete on my part!?) Where's Channel 1 master and slave? Since these are SATA cables and not the IDE ribbons from a time ago, why the whole master/slave declaration during boot and in BIOS? Should my BIOS reflect the fact that these are SATA cables? I mean, in BIOS, should the "Onchip SATA mode IDE" be set to RAID or AHCI instead of IDE? Any replies, answers, suggestions, links, tips will be much appreciated. Thank you in advance!

I need to find out which application is causing these events, is there anyway to find this out? • How do I send e-mails with attachments to a Microsoft WebTV user?

  my friend uses Microsoft WebTV (e-mail address ends with @webtv.net) and I'd like to send him an e-mail with a picture attached to it. We went through a series of attempts one of which ended up a success, all others a failure. He just can't see my e-mail in his mailbox, when it contains an attachment. E-mails without attachments always go through all right. What seemed to help in the first successful case, was that he added my e-mail address to his address book and my e-mail suddenly showed up. Seemed to have been delivered before but hidden. He kept my address in his address book however, it didn't help with the following trials. He did look into his junk folder, nothing there. I made sure the file name contains no spaces. It's a regular jpeg, named something-like-this.jpg I downsized it to have only about 50k, as I've read somewhere that that's a limit. I actually doubt this piece of information, because I think the successful attempt was larger. webtv.net contains zero information. I watched their video demo for the e-mail client, so I at least know how the user interface looks like. I've never laid my hands on the real thing. I'm an advanced user myself (a programmer) but I can't wrap my mind around this. He on the other hand, is a very technically inexperienced user and because he's half way across the globe, I can't come and look over his shoulder. He doesn't have a computer, afaik there's no way I could see what he sees. Any ideas on how to debug this? Thanks for your time, guys. P.S. • Why do scrollbars stop working when the mouse is too far away?

  Dragging a (Windows) scrollbar only works as long as the cursor is not too far away from the scrollbar itself. How can I 'fix' this bevaviour? Is there some kind of threshold in the registry? Tip: to see this behavior: click on a scrollbar (dont' release the mouse button) and move up/down. This works, as long as you don't move too much to the left.

• Ubuntu 9.10 upgraded with Internet connection fail

  I am pretty sure that the latest Ubuntu release does not support my wireless internet card. Everything was working fine in 9.04 and since upgrading my browser will load web pages. I can see and connect to my wep encrypted network. I can ping google.com and lose no packets. I am at the end of my tether, what else can I try? Is it possible to download a driver to re-enable my wireless?

I heard that ZFS did not yet support shrinking pools by removing drives/mirrors. But that has probably been changed. Which version (if any) released the ability to shrink a pool?

• Finding bluetooth link key in Win7, to double pair a device on dualboot computer

  How can I dig up the bluetooth link key for a paired device in Win7? Is this something that is dependent on the bluetooth stack I'm using (Toshiba), or is there a generic place to store these in Win7? Note: I'm not talking about the six-digit code usually typed by the user during pairing - that is worthless since it's discarded after pairing process. What I mean is the 128-bit link key that the devices exchange during pairing, and use thereafter to encrypt all their bluetooth traffic. Background: I dualboot Win7 / Ubuntu on my laptop, and I would like to have my phone paired to both OS's. Since the dualbooting computer has only one bluetooth adapter and thus only one bluetooth address, I cannot do two pairings to the phone, since on the second pairing (windows) the phone just replaces the previous pairing (linux) to the same bluetooth address. A thread on Ubuntu forums pointed me to what I have to do - pair first on linux, then on windows, and then replace the link key on linux side with the one windows negotiated. I can find the linux side pairing key from /var/lib/bluetooth/[BD_ADDR]/linkkeys - no problems there. However, on windows side I can't find the key. According to the forum post, on windows side the key should be in SYSTEM\ControlSet002\services\BTHPORT\Parameters\Keys\[BD_ADDR] but while that registry key does exist, it has no subkeys. (And a similar registry path in ControlSet001 didn't have any subkeys either.) One thing I've been instructed to do is to capture all events during pairing with Sysinternals Process Monitor. I did this, but I haven't been able to find any useful information from the captured events, not even by exporting the data to a huge XML and grepping that with the BD_ADDRs (with or without colons). • DD-WRT - Where's the best place to get a LinkSys WRT54G V1.0?

  Looking for the initial release of the LinkSys WRT54G, not V1.1 or V2.0 or anything like that. If it comes with DD-WRT pre-installed, even better. That being said, I suppose a side question would be whether SU recommends different hardware. After all, DD-WRT may have been originally built for the WRT54G and the WRT54Gv1.0 may have better hardware than any of the successive models, but it's still fairly dated. Are there newer routers that are more stable or performant with DD-WRT?

• Which program is locking all my executable files?

  When updating any software product, as well as manually trying to replace .exe files, it says that access is denied to the file and in fact the System process is holding a handle to the file when I check it with Process Explorer. This must be a driver or something that is malfunctioning was my first though, but now I wonder how I figure out which driver / program is doing this and why it is so. Unlocker doesn't seem to be working for me, unless someone can tell me how to use it properly other than making it appear a magical wand in the notification area.... This is what Unlocker puts in my event log: The description for Event ID 1060 from source Application Popup cannot be found. • Fixing damaged partition table

  This is continuation of Recover Extended Partition , but this time I have different problem related partition table it self. I managed to restore partition that I needed and backed up files that were crucial to me (at least those that I had space to store somewhere) OK now get to the problem. My partition table is corrupted, booting RIP Linux I can mount it in truecrypt (and other ones that recovered), but that's basically it. When I launch GParted I have unallocated drive. • How to restore Active Desktop if Themes is locked via GPO?

  My company forces Active Desktop upon everybody so that it can display a (monthly-rotated) corporate wallpaper.jpg. Problem is, some computers (including my laptop) somehow experienced some errors resulting in the dreaded "Active Desktop Recovery" screen to show up... and clicking the "Restore My Active Desktop" button always resulted in "Internet Explorer Script Error". Various workarounds I found in the Internet either does not work or requires me to change the theme first to something else... and the latter I can't do because the Desktop Settings screen is locked via GPO. As it happens, due to the nature of the programs I use, I'm granted Administrator-level access on my computer. The question is: How do I fix my situation? Note: I don't need to put on my own wallpaper, but watching the "Active Desktop Recovery" screen (with its BLANK WHITE!!1! OH MY EYES!1!!one!eleven!! background) gets tiresome. I'm quite happy with the corporate wallpaper. I just need to somehow 'recover' my Active Desktop.
