• Anything speaking against the bitnami.org Ruby/Rails/Redmine Stack?

  I am looking to set up a Redmine server on a Windows virtual machine on my local workstation. (Background in this related question.) I have zero knowledge of Ruby nor Rails, and while Redmine may be the opportunity to dip into those platforms somewhat, my first goal is to get it running as quickly and easily as possible. For that, I am eyeing the Bitnami Redmine Package. It promises point-and-click install, and a self-contained environment with everything you need. Apart from the learning factor, are there any serious limitations this method implies? Any serious cutdowns in customizability? I will be wanting to customize the template right away, for example, and install plugins. The package looks o.k. to me but before I install it, I was curious to know whether anybody would advise against it and why. Edit: The first impression is great. From 0 to a working Redmine installation in twelve minutes! Wow.

The options so far are: Set all the private methods to internal and use [assembly: InternalsVisibleTo()] Separate out all the private methods into a separate class and create an interface. Make all the methods virtual and in my tests create a new class that inherits from this class and override the methods. Are there any other options for testing the above class that would be better that what I've listed? If you would pick one of the ones I've listed can you explain why? Thanks

• Delphi: Alternative to using Reset/ReadLn for text file reading

  i want to process a text file line by line. In the olden days i loaded the file into a StringList: slFile := TStringList.Create(); slFile.LoadFromFile(filename); for i := 0 to slFile.Count-1 do begin oneLine := slFile.Strings[i]; //process the line end; Problem with that is once the file gets to be a few hundred megabytes, i have to allocate a huge chunk of memory; when really i only need enough memory to hold one line at a time. (Plus, you can't really indicate progress when you the system is locked up loading the file in step 1). The i tried using the native, and recommended, file I/O routines provided by Delphi: var f: TextFile; begin Reset(f, filename); while ReadLn(f, oneLine) do begin //process the line end; Problem withAssign is that there is no option to read the file without locking (i.e. fmShareDenyNone). The former stringlist example doesn't support no-lock either, unless you change it to LoadFromStream: slFile := TStringList.Create; stream := TFileStream.Create(filename, fmOpenRead or fmShareDenyNone); slFile.LoadFromStream(stream); stream.Free; for i := 0 to slFile.Count-1 do begin oneLine := slFile.Strings[i]; //process the line end; So now even though i've gained no locks being held, i'm back to loading the entire file into memory. Is there some alternative to Assign/ReadLn, where i can read a file line-by-line, without taking a sharing lock? i'd rather not get directly into Win32 CreateFile/ReadFile, and having to deal with allocating buffers and detecting CR, LF, CRLF's. i thought about memory mapped files, but there's the difficulty if the entire file doesn't fit (map) into virtual memory, and having to maps views (pieces) of the file at a time. Starts to get ugly. i just want Reset with fmShareDenyNone!

• How do you map a DateTime property to 2 varchar columns in the database with NHibernate (Fluent)?

  I'm dealing with a legacy database that has date and time fields as char(8) columns (formatted yyyyMMdd and HH:mm:ss, respectively) in some of the tables. How can i map the 2 char columns to a single .NET DateTime property? I have tried the following, but i get a "can't access setter" error of course because DateTime Date and TimeOfDay properties are read-only: public class SweetPocoMannaFromHeaven { public virtual DateTime? FileCreationDateTime { get; set; } } . mapping.Component<DateTime?>(x => x.FileCreationDateTime, dt => { dt.Map(x => x.Value.Date, "file_creation_date"); dt.Map(x => x.Value.TimeOfDay, "file_creation_time"); }); I have also tried defining a IUserType for DateTime, but i can't figure it out. I've done a ton of googling for an answer, but i can't figure it out still. What is my best option to handle this stupid legacy database convention? • Listing serial (COM) ports on Windows?

  Hello, I'm looking for a robust way to list the available serial (COM) ports on a Windows machine. There's this post about using WMI, but I would like something less .NET specific - I want to get the list of ports in a Python or a C++ program, without .NET. I currently know of two other approaches: Reading the information in the HARDWARE\\DEVICEMAP\\SERIALCOMM registry key. This looks like a great option, but is it robust? I can't find a guarantee online or in MSDN that this registry cell indeed always holds the full list of available ports. Tryint to call CreateFile on COMN with N a number from 1 to something. This isn't good enough, because some COM ports aren't named COMN. For example, some virtual COM ports created are named CSNA0, CSNB0, and so on, so I wouldn't rely on this method. Any other methods/ideas/experience to share?   I'm having a hard time trying to get my stored procedure works with NHibernate. The data returned from the SP does not correspond to any database table. And later on in CheckNamedQueries function, it is not able to find the persistor for SomeClass. I've checked all the obvious things (e.g. make hbm as an embedded resource) and my code isn't too much different from other samples I found on the web, but somehow I just can't get it working. Any idea how I can resolve this issue?

• Why won't my styles show in a Dynamics CRM 4 IFRAME?

  I have created a web page (ASP.NET) that includes a stylesheet to mimic Dynamics CRM styles. This is to be used in a CRM IFRAME (within a form). The stylesheet is referenced as follows: <head id="Head1" runat="server"> <link href="Styles.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> </head> When I load the page in Visual Studio, all is well. When I load it in CRM, none of the styles are shown and no images are displayed. If I browse directly to the image, I get a 404 error. However, the pages function correctly. I have set read permissions for "Everyone" on the server to see if that was causing a problem but it didn't help. I also tried putting a plain HTML page in the folder and that won't load either - again a 404. The page is installed in the ISV folder ..../isv/MyProject. Can anyone help? EDIT This is on a multi-tenancy system. On my test company (testcompany) if I browse to http://crm/testcompany/isv/MyProject/MyPage.aspx, the page is loaded (without styles and images). If I browse to http://crm/testcompany/isv/MyProject/TestImage.gif, the image is not shown. If I browse to http://crm/isv/MyProject/TestImage.gif, the image is shown. Does this suggest a problem with the server setup and the way CRM messes around with virtual directories?

• ASP.NET: disabling authentication for a single aspx page (custom error page)?

  I am using a custom error page: <customErrors redirectMode="ResponseRedirect" mode="On" defaultRedirect="Error2.aspx"/> I want to disable authentication for the custom error page because the error being raised is related to an authentication module and I don't want to get into an infinite loop and I want to display a clean error page to the user. I have been trying the following configuration to do that. <location path="Error2.aspx"> <system.web> <authentication mode="None"/> <authorization> <allow users="?"/> <allow users="*"/> </authorization> </system.web> </location> I am getting a System.Configuration.ConfigurationErrorsException for the line that sets the authentication mode. It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS. I have verified that there are no other web.config files in subdirectories under the application's folder. The applications folder is configured as an application in IIS and the error page is at the application's root. File permissions set for the error page in IIS include anonymous and windows authentication (I have tried just anonymous as well).

  I just did a clean install on Windows 7 x64 Professional with the final release of Visual Studio 2010 Premium. In order to duplicate what I'm experiencing do the following in: Create a new ASP.NET MVC 2 Web Application Right click the project and select Properties On the Web tab, select "Use Local IIS Web Server" Click on Create Virtual Directory Save all Unload the project Edit the project file Change MvcBuildViews to true Save all Reload project Right click the project and select Publish Choose the file system publish method Enter a target location Choose Delete all existing files Select Publish Right click the project Select Publish Each time I do the above I get the following errror: "It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level..." The error originates from obj\debug\package\packagetmp\web.config, relative to the project directory. I can repeat this all day long with any MVC 2 project I've built. In order to fix this problem, I need to set MvcBuildViews to false in the project file. That's not really an option. This wasn't a problem in Visual Studio 2008 and it seems to be an issue with the way the Publish command stages files beneath the project directory. Can anyone else duplicate this error? Is this a bug or by design? Is there a fix, workaround, etc...? Thanks.

  i'm trying to use the terminal from python VTE binding (python-vte from debian squeeze) as a virtual terminal emulator (just for ANSI/control chars text processing) in interactive python console, everything looks (almost) all right: >>> import vte >>> term = vte.Terminal() >>> term.feed("a\nb") >>> print repr(term.get_text(lambda *a: True).rstrip()) 'a\n b' however, launching this code (little modified) as python script, different result is yielded: $ python vte_wiredness_1.py '' strangely enough, pasting the code back into the (new) interactive python session also yields empty string: >>> import vte >>> term = vte.Terminal() >>> term.feed("a\nb") >>> print repr(term.get_text(lambda *a: True).rstrip()) '' >>> first thing caming on my mind was that the only difference between the two cases is the timing - there had to be some delay before get_text. unfortunately, preluding get_text with some seconds sleep did not help then i thought it has something to do with X window environment. but the results are the same pure linux console (with some warning on missing graphics). i wonder what causes such an unpredictable behavior (interactive console - pasted vs typed, and it's not the delay.. ant the interactive console has nothing to do with the vte terminal object.. i guess) can someone explain what is happening? is it possible to use the VTE Term such way? that the "b" letter in the output is preceded by the space, is another strangeness (all consecutive lines are preceded by more spaces.. looks like I have to send carriage return before the string.) (the lambda *a: True get_text method argument i'm using is a dummy callback, it's is some SlotSelectedCallback.. for its explanation i'd be grateful as well :) )

In my code some classes have large hierarchies. What is the recommended way of doing this? Cloning everything at each level without calling the base class seems wrong? First questions is: I know D3D10 has done some work on memory virtualization that means client don't need to consider where the buffer was reserved, GPU memory, AGP memory or Process system memory. Is this correct? Second question is: When I use ID3D10Device to CreateBuffer continuously, no matter what buffer desc type is, for example ID3D10Device::CreateBuffer( ... • COM-Objects containing maps / content error(0)

  I'm writing a small wrapper to get familiar with some important topics in C++ (WinAPI, COM, STL,OOP). For now, my class shall be able to create a (child) window. Mainly, this window is connected to a global message loop that distribute messages to a local loop of the right instance (global is static, local is virtual). Obviously, there are surely better ways to do that but I'm using std::maps to store HWND and their instance pointer in pairs (the Global loop looks for the pointer with the HWND-parameter, gets itself the pointer from the map and calls then the local loop). Now, it appears that the map does not accept any values because of a unknown reason. It seems to allocate enough space but something went wrong anyway [ (error) 0 is displayed instead of the entries in visual C++). I've looked that up in google as well and found out that maps cause some trouble when used in classes AND DLLs. May this be the reason and is there any solution?? The problem is that ASP.Net Membership system doesn't work in integrated mode. • ASMX Web Service online works when all of the code is in one file without code-behind

  I have an ASMX Web Service that has its code entirely in a code-behind file, so that the entire contents of the .asmx file is: <%@ WebService Language="C#" CodeBehind="~/App_Code/AddressValidation.cs" Class="AddressValidation" %> On my test machine (Windows XP with IIS 5), I set up a virtual directory just for this ASP.NET 2.0 solution and everything works great. All my code is separated nicely and it just works. However, when we deployed this solution to our Windows Server 2003 development environment, we noticed that the code only compiled when all of the code was dropped directly into the .asmx file, meaning that the solution didn't work with code-behind. We can't figure out why this is happening. One thing that's different about our setup in our development environment is that instead of creating a separate virual directory just for this solution, we dropped it into an existing directory that runs a classic ASP application. So here we have a folder with an ASP.NET 2.0 application within a directory that contains a classic ASP application. Granted, everything in the ASP.NET 2.0 application works if all of the code is within the .asmx file and not in code-behind, but we'd really like to know why it's not recognizing the code-behind files and compiling it correctly.

• Help using RDA on a Desktop Applicaton?

  I have a .NET 3.5 Compact Framework project that uses RDA for moving data between its mobile device's local SqlCe database and a remote MSSql-2008 server(it uses RDA Push and Pull). The server machine a virtual directory with sqlcesa35.dll (v3.5.5386.0) setup for RDA. We usually install these cabs on the mobile devices and the RDA process does not have any problems: sqlce.wce5.armv4i.cab sqlce.repl.wce5.armv4i.cab Now I am trying to run this application as a desktop application. RDA Pull (download) has been working well. But the RDA Push (upload) is giving me some problems. This is the exception that I get on the desktop application when I try to use RDA Push: System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeException The Client Agent and Server Agent component versions are incompatible. The compatible versions are: Client Agent versions 3.0 and 3.5 with Server Agent versions 3.5 and Client Agent version 3.5 with Server Agent version 3.5. Re-install the replication components with the matching versions for client and server agents. But this just gives me a slightly different exception: System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeException [ 35,30 ] Is there a different setup or any different dlls that I need to use? Thanks, -Joel

• oracle query with inconsistent results

  Im having a very strange problem, i have a complicated view that returns incorrect data when i query on a particular column. heres an example: select empname, has_garnishment from timecard_v2 where empname = 'Testerson, Testy'; this returns the single result 'Testerson, Testy', 'N' however, if i use the query: select empname, has_garnishment from timecard_v2 where empname = 'Testerson, Testy' and has_garnishment = 'Y'; this returns the single result 'Testerson, Testy', 'Y' The second query should return a subset of the first query, but it returns a different answer. I have dissected the view and determined that this section of the view definition is where the problem arises(Note, I removed all of the select clause except the parts of interests for clarity, in the full query all joined tables are required): SELECT e.fullname empname , NVL2(ded.has_garn, 'Y', 'N') has_garnishment FROM timecard tc , orderdetail od , orderassign oa , employee e , employee3 e3 , customer10 c10 , order_misc om, (SELECT COUNT(*) has_garn, v_ssn FROM deductions WHERE yymmdd_stop = 0 OR (LENGTH(yymmdd_stop) = 7 AND to_date(SUBSTR(yymmdd_stop, 2), 'YYMMDD') sysdate) GROUP BY v_ssn ) ded WHERE oa.lrn(+) = tc.lrn_order AND om.lrn(+) = od.lrn AND od.orderno = oa.orderno AND e.ssn = tc.ssn AND c10.custno = tc.custno AND e.lrn = e3.lrn AND e.ssn = ded.v_ssn(+) One thing of note about the definition of the 'ded' subquery. The v_ssn field is a virtual field on the deductions table. I am not a DBA im a software developer but we recently lost our DBA and the new one is still getting up to speed so im trying to debug this issue. • Raising C# events with an extension method - is it bad?

  We're all familiar with the horror that is C# event declaration. To ensure thread-safety, the standard is to write something like this: public event EventHandler SomethingHappened; protected virtual void OnSomethingHappened(EventArgs e) { var handler = SomethingHappened; if (handler != null) handler(this, e); } Recently in some other question on this board (which I can't find now), someone pointed out that extension methods could be used nicely in this scenario. Here's one way to do it: static public class EventExtensions { static public void RaiseEvent(this EventHandler @event, object sender, EventArgs e) { var handler = @event; if (handler != null) handler(sender, e); } static public void RaiseEvent<T>(this EventHandler<T> @event, object sender, T e) where T : EventArgs { var handler = @event; if (handler != null) handler(sender, e); } } With these extension methods in place, all you need to declare and raise an event is something like this: public event EventHandler SomethingHappened; void SomeMethod() { this.SomethingHappened.RaiseEvent(this, EventArgs.Empty); } My question: Is this a good idea? Are we missing anything by not having the standard On method? (One thing I notice is that it doesn't work with events that have explicit add/remove code.)

I have a class that just wrap a CGContext, it have a CGContextRef as member. This Object is re-created each time DrawRect() is called, so the CGContextRef is always up-to-date. The draw calls came from the main thread, only After looking for this kind of error, it appear that it should be object Release related.
