  • low level api or graphics library?

    Well, I want to learn game development, I've already know a little bit about xna, ogre and DX but, I want to choose one of them and stick with it. I'm not trying to make a "directx vs xna, ogre vs opengl, etc." thread. Some people told me that it's better to learn an engine like Ogre because you can develop games directly and you don't have to worry about the low level details, I know that. Other people told me that it's better to learn a low level api before learning something like Ogre because you will able to understand how it works. Is it valuable to have experience with Ogre or another engine but don't know anything about a low level api? What do you recommend me? Thanks in advance.

    I am wondering what are the chances of a career shifter (mid 20's), who have maybe 3-6 months programming experience vs. younger fresh IT/Com Sci graduates. You see, even though I really love programming (Java/J2EE), but nobody gives me a feedback when I apply online. maybe because they preferred IT/ComSci graduates vs a career shifter like me.. So can you advice on how to improve my chance on being hired. How can i get a real-job programming experince if nobody is hiring me. I can make my own projects (working e-commerce site blah blah) but it is still different from the real job. And my codes are working but it still needs a lot of improvement and no one can tell me how to improve it because no one sees it (because I'm doing it alone?).   • Missing feature in Hyper-V from Virtual PC

    One thing I really miss is the ability to create shared folder between host and guest.  Virtual PC does this well, you can create Shared Folder to be used every time, or just this one.  I have read some posts on how to do this.  Some people suggest using ISO Creator to package up the files and mount the image to DVD drive, but what I need is truly a "shared" environment, so I'm currently looking into creating Virtual switch and creating an internal network between the host and guest.  Let's see how that works out. I would have loved to give Virtual SAN Manager a try, but I don't have a local Fibre Channel to set one up.   • What are the advantages / disadvantages of a Cloud-based / Web-based IDE?

    I'm writing this as DevConnections in Las Vegas is happening. Visual Studio 2010 has been released and I now have this 3GB beast installed to my machine. (I'll admit, it has some nice features.) However, while the install was monopolizing my computer's resources I began to wish that my IDE worked more like Google Documents (instantly available, available anywhere, easy to share, easy to collaborate, naturally versioned). A few Google (and StackOverflow) searches led me to : Coderun Bespin I'm well aware that these IDE's are missing a lot of what exists in VS 2010. However, that isn't my question. Instead, I'm wondering what benefits a web-based IDE might have? Assuming a company invests the time to create the missing features, what is the downside?

  • How do I get Java to parse and format a date/time with the same time zone? I keep getting the local timezone

    My application keeps all Java Date's in UTC. Parsing them is easy, but when I print them out, the display shows the computer's local time zone, and I want to show it as UTC. Example code: String sample = "271210 200157 UTC"; SimpleDateFormat dfmt = new SimpleDateFormat("ddMMyy HHmmss Z"); Date result = dfmt.parse(sample); System.out.printf("%tc\n", result); the result is Mon Dec 27 15:01:57 EST 2010 What I want is Mon Dec 27 20:01:57 UTC 2010 Clearly I have to set some Locale and TimeZone values, but I don't see where to put them.   • Does Exchange have ability to run hidden mailboxes?

    Hello, Title of my question may sound a little bit odd but I was thinking if Exchange 2010 or 2007 or any program that would work in conjunction with Exchange has ability to create this structure: Users having their normal mailboxes connected and using them as everyone would in Outlook 2003/2007/2010. Users having additional mailboxes (from old Exchange 2003) attached but hidden on demand of Administrator. For example administrator could easy disable them just like they never been attached making them invisible to users and everyone else. Would be good if such mailboxes could be easily removed out of system (lets say on external drive) by simple step not manual job for 100 mailboxes. Users without ability to copy/move their mails to outside storage (like a local .pst file)? Do you guys have any suggestions on this? I was thinking maybe using public folders but this seems like overkill and not really suited for this. And please don't ask me why I need this type of security (it's not something I requested).

    Using Hibernate + annotations, I'm trying to do the following: Two entities, Entity1 and Entity2. Entity1 contains a simple generated value primary key. Entity2 primary key is composed by a simple generated value + the id of entity one (with a many to one relationship) Unfortunately, I can't make it work.     Hi All I am trying to create a scikit.timeseries object starting from 2 datetime objects. If I understood correctly it should be possible to create a scikits.timeseries starting from datetime objects. I try the following code but it says that Insufficient parameters. The 2 datetime differs for few microseconds. In this case what should be the value for freq parameter? Is what I am trying allowed? In theory, since timeseries can be based on datetime objects it should be possible to hanlde up to microsecond , is this correct? I think that this is not really clear to me.     My service has a large ongoing number of user events, and we would like to do things like "count occurrence of event type T since date D." We are trying to make two basic decisions: What to store? Storing every event vs. only storing aggregates (Event log style) log every event and count them later, vs. (Time-series style) store a single aggregated "count of event E for date D" for every day Where to store the data In a relational database (particularly MySQL) In a non-relational (NoSQL) database In flat log files (collected centrally over the network via syslog-ng) What is standard practice / where can I read more about comparing the different types of systems? Additional details: The total event stream is large, potentially hundreds of thousands of entries per day But our current need is only to count certain types of events within it We don't necessarily need real-time access to the raw data or aggregation results IMHO, "log all events to files, crawl them at a later time to filter and aggregate the stream" is a pretty standard UNIX Way, but my Rails-y compatriots seem to think that nothing is real unless it's in MySQL.

    I'm trying to compare 2 dates using javascript. 1 at the end of the month and 1 at the beginning. I need to compare these 2 dates in seconds so I'm using the Date.UTC javascript function. Here's the code: var d = Date.UTC(2010,5,31,23,59,59); document.write(d); var d2 = Date.UTC(2010,6,1,12,20,11); document.write(d2); The output for is: 1278028799000 1277986811000 This is telling me that 1/6/2010 is less than 5/31/2010 in milliseconds. How is that possible? What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help.

    I have some data of an excel file below. At first, I figured that reading from the file could be done using the Excel Library then using an OLEDB connection. I managed to get the DocumentNo column data with the OLEDB approach. However, when the excel file is closed, I am unable to do the operation because it gives an error that "External table is not in the expected format."     I'd like to change the formatting of a date in Symfony 1.4 The default one being: <?php echo $question->getUpdatedAt(); // Returns 2010-01-26 16:23:53 ?> I'd like my date to be formatted like so: 26/01/2010 - 16h23 I tried using the format_date helper DateHelper class. Unfortunately the API is rather empty (something really needs to be done about it.) Browsing the helper's source code, I found that a second argument, format, can be passed. I assumed it was using the same syntax as PHP's date function. But here's what it outputs (same example as above): <?php sfContext::getInstance()->getConfiguration()->loadHelpers('Date'); // [...] echo format_date($question->getUpdatedAt(),'d/m/y - H\hi') // Returns 26/23/2010 - 16\4i I'm sure I'm not the first one having trouble doing this but I've been Googling around and nothing accurate showed up.   • ClickOnce installing prereqs out of order

    I have an Outlook plugin that I am deploying using ClickOne (right click on project file, choose publish, etc...). I recently created a blank XP VM with only Office 2007 installed. My ClickOnce installer recognizes that I need my three prerequisites (Office 2007 PIAs, .Net 3.5 Sp1, and VSTO 2010 tools). They download fine but then the installer tries to install the Office 2007 PIAs first and my install fails because .Net 3.5 Sp1 and VSTO 2010 tools are prerequisites for the Office 2007 PIAs. How can I change the install order of my prerequisites? Also, are there better options for deploying ClickOnce's applications?

  • R: Plotting a graph with different colors of points based on advanced criteria

    What I would like to do is a plot (using ggplot), where the x axis represent years which have a different colour for the last three years in the plot than the rest. The last three years should also meet a certain criteria and based on this the last three years can either be red or green. The criteria is that the mean of the last three years should be less (making it green) or more (making it red) than the 66%-percentile of the remaining years. So far I have made two different functions calculating the last three year mean: LYM3 <- function (x) { LYM3 <- tail(x,3) mean(LYM3$Data,na.rm=T) } And the 66%-percentile for the remaining: perc66 <- function(x) { percentile <- head(x,-3) quantile(percentile$Data, .66, names=F,na.rm=T) } Here are two sets of data that can be used in the calculations (plots), the first which is an example from my real data where LYM3(df1) < perc66(df1) and the second is just made up data where LYM3 perc66. df1<- data.frame(Year=c(1979:2010), Data=c(347261.87, 145071.29, 110181.93, 183016.71, 210995.67, 205207.33, 103291.78, 247182.10, 152894.45, 170771.50, 206534.55, 287770.86, 223832.43, 297542.86, 267343.54, 475485.47, 224575.08, 147607.81, 171732.38, 126818.10, 165801.08, 136921.58, 136947.63, 83428.05, 144295.87, 68566.23, 59943.05, 49909.08, 52149.11, 117627.75, 132127.79, 130463.80)) df2 <- data.frame(Year=c(1979:2010), Data=c(sample(50,29,replace=T),75,75,75)) Here’s my code for my plot so far: plot <- ggplot(df1, aes(x=Year, y=Data)) + theme_bw() + geom_point(size=3, aes(colour=ifelse(df1$Year<2008, "black",ifelse(LYM3(df1) < perc66(df1),"green","red")))) + geom_line() + scale_x_continuous(breaks=c(1980,1985,1990,1995,2000,2005,2010), limits=c(1978,2011)) plot As you notice it doesn’t really do what I want it to do. The only thing it does seem to do is that it turns the years before 2008 into one level and those after into another one and base the point colour off these two levels. Since I don’t want this year to be stationary either, I made another tiny function: fun3 <- function(x) { df <- subset(x, Year==(max(Year)-2)) df$Year } So the previous code would have the same effect as: geom_point(size=3, aes(colour=ifelse(df1$Year<fun3(df1), "black","red"))) But it still does not care about my colours. Why does it make the years into levels? And how come an ifelse function doesn’t work within another one in this case? How would it be possible to the arguments to do what I like? I realise this might be a bit messy, asking for a lot at the same time, but I hope my description is pretty clear. It would be helpful if someone could at least point me in the right direction. I tried to put the code for the plot into a function as well so I wouldn’t have to change the data frame at all functions within the plot, but I can’t get it to work. Thank you!

    Having read this heated question about Unity vs. UDK vs. ID something, I'm curious to know: what the repeatedly-hit, most crippling limitation(s) of Unity? In order to keep this question non-subjective, again, I'm talking about the top repeated offender(s) of Unity are. This is something that, as a Unity user, you really wish someone had told you about before you started using it. I have heard from someone that Unity does not deal well with version control, since it generates a lot of binary files (which are un-diffable). This, to me, is not really crippling as I work alone. Thoughts?

    If in a database (MySQL), I have a datetime column (ex. 1899-12-30 19:00:00), how do I sum 1 day to it? Following http://corelib.rubyonrails.org/classes/Time.html#M000240 If I want to add 1 day, it actually adds 60*60*24 days (86,400 days) r=Record.find(:first) =>Sat, 30 Dec 1899 19:00:00 -0600 r.date + (60*60*24) =>Fri, 20 Jul 2136 19:00:00 -0600 But if I do this it actually adds 1 day: t = Time.now =>Mon Jun 14 10:32:51 -0600 2010 t + (60 * 60 * 24) =>Tue Jun 15 10:33:21 -0600 2010 I guess it has to do with the format...how do I make this work?
