• HtmlUnit doesn't load externally referenced javascript

  I have run into a problem while trying to test a web application with HtmlUnit. Please bear in mind that I haven't used HtmlUnit very long so I might be missing something trivial. For some reason externally referenced javascripts aren't being loaded. When I print the page as xml all i get is this: <script language="javascript" src="urltofile.js"> </script> As you can see the script tag is empty when it should contain the javascript. What am I missing? I have googled for a solution all morning but haven't found any relevant information. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• Parantheses around method invokation: why is the compiler complaining about assignment?

  I know why the following code doesn't compile: public class Main { public static void main(String args[]) { main((null)); // this is fine! (main(null)); // this is NOT! } } What I'm wondering is why my compiler (javac 1.6.0_17, Windows version) is complaining "The left hand side of an assignment must be a variable". I'd expect something like "Don't put parantheses around a method invokation, dummy!", instead. So why is the compiler making a totally unhelpful complaint about something that is blatantly irrelevant? Is this the result of an ambiguity in the grammar? A bug in the compiler? If it's the former, could you design a language such that a compiler would never be so off-base about a syntax error like this?

• Compilation hangs for a class with field double d = 2.2250738585072012e-308

  I have come across an interesting situation. A coworker committed some changes, which would not compile on my machine neither from the IDE (Eclipse) nor from a command line (Maven). The problem manifested in the compilation process taking 100% CPU and only killing the process would help to stop it. After some analysis the cause of the problem was located and resolved. It turned out be a line "double d = 2.2250738585072012e-308" (without semicolon at the end) in one of the interfaces. The following snipped duplicates it. public class WeirdCompilationIssue { double d = 2.2250738585072012e-308 } Why would compiler hang? A language edge case?

  Am I the only one bugged by the phrase "unmanaged c++"? I think the phrase is implicitly insulting, and is designed to be so. Stroustrup never wrote "The Design and Evolution of Unmanaged C++" and the not unmanaged C++ standards committee is not working on "UC++1x". Maybe I should disingeneously invent a suite of languages called "Faster" purely so I can refer to any language I want to implicitly denigrate with a "Slow" prefix. "Oh, youre using Slow CSharp? Shame!"

• FastCGI C++ program and missing SCRIPT_NAME

  Hi guys, i'm studying the fastcgi developement kit because i'm writing a new scripting language and i'd like to write a fastcgi version of the interpreter to run scripts as webpages. I'm using this example from the sdk, located at /srv/http/bin/echocpp So, in my httpd.conf file, i have the following lines : FastCgiServer /srv/http/bin/echocpp -idle-timeout 120 -processes 4 ScriptAlias / /srv/http/bin/echocpp/ ... ... AddHandler fastcgi-script hy Where 'hy' is the extensions of my scripts. Then, when i try browse, for instance http://localhost/~evilsocket/prime.hy I see all the environment variables as expected from the echo-cpp.cpp programm, except for the SCRIPT_NAME that is empty. Is there something i'm missing out of this? How am i supposed to obtain the full path of the script to run it inside my fastcgi version of the interpreter? Thanks

Reading Coders at work I saw that lot of the interviewees suggest to dive into a project source code to learn best practices to be aware of bad habits and of course to take new inspirations for how to do things. I decided to pick a project as more self contained as I could find. My choice was Sinatra since It's 1000 LOC. Is It a good project to learn? Do you suggest another one more simple (i.e. less LOCs)? • How to escape/strip special characters in the LaTeX document?

  We implemented the online service where it is possible to generate PDF with predefined structure. User can choose a LaTeX template and then compile it with an appropriate inputs. The question we worry about is the security, that the malicious user was not able to gain shell access through the injection of special instruction into latex document. We need some workaround for this or at least a list of special characters that we should strip from the input data. Preferred language would be PHP, but any suggestions, constructions and links are very welcomed. PS. in few word we're looking form mysql_real_escape_string for LaTeX

  I was recently on an interview for a position where C/C++ is the primary language and during one question I was told that it's possible to use the vtable to determine which class in a hierarchy a base pointer actually stores. So if, for example you have class A { public: A() {} virtual ~A() {} virtual void method1() {} }; class B : public A { public: B() {} virtual ~B() {} virtual void method1() {} }; and you instantiate A * pFoo = new B(), is it indeed possible to use the vtable to determine whether pFoo contains a pointer to an instance of A or B?

  Quick Background Since learning basic html 5 years ago, I've become completely obsessed with the technology, the logic, and the thrill of solving problems involved with building websites. I am still stuck at a thoroughly non-programming type job, but would really like to move into the field of web programming/design. I have no educational background in the field (was trained as a fine artist and tutor), but in the past few years have progressed fully self-taught (and self-motivated) from html to css to php, mysql, jquery, and am now building rich web applications. The Question How can I prove to a company that even though I have no education, I have a passion to learn whatever is thrown my way? ...That essentially I would come at every issue with not only knowledge, but with a passionate desire to solve it, whether that means tackling a new language or debugging code for hours at a time? p.s. I have many times read over the web (including StackOverflow) that STL is the best collections library that you can get in *any* language. • Has anybody managed to teach themself strong OOP skills through mainly developing with JavaScript?

  I am trying to do this, I'm a full time front-end dev and am aware that I am struglling to achieve this. When I am referring to OOP skills I am referring to understanding and being familiar with concepts like inheritance, polymorphism, encapsulation, abstaction. I am aware that it may be more likely to achieve what I'm after by focusing on another language in my spare time. This is the plan, but I'd be really intrigued to hear if anybody has managed to achieve this purely through JavaScript and how you did it. It'd be even better to hear from strong OOP developers from who use different programming languages to know if they have worked with developers who have managed to achieve this.

  Hi everyone, I want to make a C# app in Mono as it's the only programming language I'm mostly comfortable with. Anyway, ATI Drivers on Linux do not have a Fan control feature and therefore the cards to tend to heat up. For me I prefer to have a cooler card. • Calling software modules (Java, Perl, etc.) from R

  I've recently started using R for Natural Language Processing tasks and find that a lot of applications are available in Java and Perl (for my purposes). For example: A few perl modules are available to find distance measures between words by querying Wordnet. I am aware of the R Wordnet package, but it does not perform the tasks that these CPAN modules do. Many Java packages for NLP are out there, which I'd like to use from within R. I know of rJava, RSPerl, the simple system command amongst others, but I'd like more examples of how I could make calls to Java and Perl applications from R. Recently I tried capturing console output from a perl script. cat( 'print "Hello World\n";',file="hello.pl" ) system(command="c:\Perl64\bin\perl hello.pl") system(command=paste(Sys.getenv("COMSPEC"),"/c","C:\Perl64\bin\perl hello.pl")) None of the above system commands showed 'Hello World' on the R console. I've used "system" before to run perl scripts to perform tasks without wanting to capture console output. Any hints and redirection to other more extensive sources of information would be highly appreciated. Thank you

• Cocoa - Localized string from NSDate, NSCalendarDate...

  I'm using NSDate to get a string such as "18 Jun 09", with code: NSDate *theDate = [NSDate date]; NSString *dateString = [theDate descriptionWithCalendarFormat:@"%d %b %y" timeZone:nil locale: nil]; This works, but only results in an English output. I need the output to be localized in the user's default language. Does Cocoa (Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5 in this case) provide a facility for this localization or do I have to manually localize for each case of day and & month names my self? (I have provided a locale, but although that does provide a locale-specific ordering of the date, it does not appear to do any localization of day-month names.)

• What should i do to practise?

  Hi guys I start a year long industrial placement in september where i will be coding in java predominantly. I am going to use the summer to brush up on my java as in year one of the degree java was the main language taught for OOP modules. However this year i have had no java exposure except for an algorithms module, which was one of eight, so as you can see i am probably getting really rusty!. What i wanted to know is, how does the "real world" java programming differ from university coding and what do you suggest i brush up on that would be different to my normal workings. As a start i definatley need to get familiar with a professional IDE like netbeans, opoosed to havign used BlueJ throughout but more specifically what coding practises should i get more familiar with I appreciate they wont expect me to be a qualified full developer and will give me time, but i would like to hit the ground running as it were, with me having full hopes to secure a perminant position after i finish my degree.   I'm after a regex that puts spaces around each "-" in a string, eg. 02 jaguar-leopard, tiger-panther 08 would become 02 jaguar - leopard, tiger - panther 08 Note that if the "-" already has spaces around it, no changes are to be made, eg. 02 jaguar - leopard, tiger - panther 08 should not become 02 jaguar - leopard, tiger - panther 08 The number of hyphens are unknown in advance. • Algorithm for calculating indefinite integrals

  Suppose I have an integral that's bounded on one (or both) ends by (-)infinity. AFAICT, I can't analytically solve this problem, it takes brute force (e.g. using a Left Riemann Sum). I'm having trouble generalizing the algorithm so that it sets the proper subdivisions; I'll either do far too much work to calculate something trivial, or not do nearly enough and have huge aliasing errors. Answering in any language is cool, but maybe someone with better google-fu can end this quickly. :) Is what I'm looking for as impossible as trying to measure the British coastline?

• What's a good book for learning BCPL?

  A long time ago, I worked on some BCPL code (very similar to C although even more basic, difficult though that is to imagine). Now, as part of a compiler course, we're going to be setting assignments for building some of the parts of the compiler (lexical and semantic analysis) and I'd like to know what the community thinks is the best book for learning about the language (and concrete why you think it's the best). Not how to write compilers for it, just on how to program in it. It'll be up to the students themselves to figure out how best to develop a compiler. We're using BCPL since the chance of people being able to plagiarise code for a compiler is very slim. Any suggestions?

  For a personnal page I use the MultiViews options in Apache to determine which page he should see depending on his locale. Here is what I do. Options MultiViews AddLanguage fr .fr AddLanguage en .en <IfModule mod_negotiation.c> LanguagePriority fr en </IfModule> I am wondering if it is bad for SEO to do this since Googlebot will probably fall on 'fr' or 'en' but not both. Would it be fixed if I add a link inside my page to the different language page.

• I would like to learn C++, what is the first step ?

  My actual experience comes from PHP and Delphi(Borland) and recently also from Obj-C (iPhone sdk). In the past I also used Java, Python, VB 6 and some other scripting language. I would like to learn C++ because i need a standard tool for write compiled applications with good performance but i have no idea about witch environment i have to choose (Ex: Borland, Microsoft, Eclipse+MinGW, ...). Based those parameters: Most useful more opensource project or work requests Most standard not a proprietary versions Biggest community documentation, manuals, tutorials, forums... Better IDE add-ons, highlight, debug, cross platform, autocomplete... Easy setup A simple setup, to focus on learning the basics Actually I'm on OSX but I can use a VM if needed. Advices about tutorial or books are welcome. I hope it's not too generic as question.
