• Rails: Obfuscating Image URLs on Amazon S3? (security concern)

  To make a long explanation short, suffice it to say that my Rails app allows users to upload images to the app that they will want to keep in the app (meaning, no hotlinking). So I'm trying to come up with a way to obfuscate the image URLs so that the address of the image depends on whether or not that user is logged in to the site, so if anyone tried hotlinking to the image, they would get a 401 access denied error. I was thinking that if I could route the request through a controller, I could re-use a lot of the authorization I've already built into my app, but I'm stuck there. What I'd like is for my images to be accessible through a URL to one of my controllers, like: http://railsapp.com/images/obfuscated?member_id=1234&pic_id=7890 If the user where to right-click on the image displayed on the website and select "Copy Address", then past it in, it would be the SAME url (as in, wouldn't betray where the image is actually hosted). The actual image would be living on a URL like this: http://s3.amazonaws.com/s3username/assets/member_id/pic_id.extension Is this possible to accomplish? Perhaps using Rails' render method? Or something else? I know it's possible for PHP to return the correct headers to make the browser think it's an image, but I don't know how to do this in Rails... UPDATE: I want all users of the app to be able to view the images if and ONLY if they are currently logged on to the site. If the user does not have a currently active session on the site, accessing the images directly should yield a generic image, or an error message.

• Enumerable.Range in and Expression and Entity Framework

  I'm currently developping an expression method (used in linq to entity queries) who has to give me a daycount for a given period (start date and end date) decrementing this daycount if specials days are in the period. My idea was the following : Generate an enumerable with all the dates (and with Enumerable.Range) Make a .Where on this enumerable to remove the specials dates Like a MyEnumerable.Where(a = a != "20120101") After that, return a MyEnumerable.Count() I come with this code : return (p) => Enumerable .Range(1, 4) .Where(a => a != 20120101) .AsQueryable() .Count() I tried to cast as a list, as a queryable, both (like the example) and no way ! it doesn't work ! I always get this error : LINQ to Entities does not recognize the method 'System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable`1[System.Int32] Range(Int32, Int32)' method, and this method cannot be translated into a store expression. Have you got an idea about that ? Using an enumerable is of course not mandatory, any working solutions is good ^^ Thank's by advance !

  Hi All, Is it necessary to decorate custom objects with [DataContract] and [DataMember] when using shared assemblies (as opposed to auto proxy generation)? The reason I ask is that I have encountered the following scenario: Suppose the following object is implemented in my service: public class baseClass { Guid _guid; public baseClass() { _guid = Guid.NewGuid() } public Guid ReturnGuid { get {return _guid;}} } public class newClass : baseClass { int _someValue; public newClass {} public int SomeValue { get {return _someValue;} set {_someValue = value;} } } [ServiceContract] public IService { [OperationContract] newClass SomeOperation(); } In my client (with shared assemblie) I can happily recieve and use a serialized newClass when SomeOperation is called - even though I have not marked it as a DataContract. However, as soon as I do mark it with DataContract and use DataMember then it complains that set is not implemented on ReturnGuid in the base class. Could somebody explain why it works fine when I do not decorate with DataContract and DataMember. Many thanks.

• ASP MVC ViewData from one view to another (Html.Encode())

  Hello all, I have a page with a bunch of labels and checkboxes on it. On this page, the labels need to be easily customizable after the project is deployed. So I made all of the labels in this style: Html.Encode(ViewData["lblText"]) And I added a button on the page called "Edit Button Labels" that will only be seen by admins. When that button is clicked, I would like to load another view that simply contains a table of two columns. One column needs to contain the current labels and the other should have text boxes for the user to enter new labels. Then, once any changes have been made, I need to permanently change the "lblText" for each label on the original page. I have tried passing viewdata and tempdata to the "Edit Button Labels" view using both return view() and return RedirectToAction() with no success. Am I missing something minor or is there a better way to do this?

  Hello, I have the following query: SELECT Base.ReportDate, Base.PropertyCode, Base.FirstName, Base.MiddleName, Base.LastName, Person.FirstName, Person.MiddleName, Person.LastName FROM LeaseT INNER JOIN Base ON LeaseT.LeaseID = Base.LeaseID INNER JOIN Person ON LeaseT.TenantID = Person.ID works fine, except there could be 0 to 'N' people in the 'Person' table for each record in the Base table, but I only want to return exactly 1 for each 'Base' record (doesn't matter which, but the one with the lowest Person.ID) would be a reasonable choice. If there is 0 rows in the person table, I still need to return the row, but with null values for the 'person' fields. How would I structure the SQL to do that? Thanks. Edit: Yes, the tables are probably not structured properly, but restructuring at this time is not possible - got to work with what is there.

• What's wrong with consuming ConfiguredTaskAwaitable from PortableClassLibrary's class under Debugger from MSTest Runner or Console App?

  *Its only Debug-time error, but a very weird one. Problem: While running with Debugger attached and calling a method, exposed in separate Portable library, returning ConfiguredTaskAwaitable, we get InvalidProgramException. Repro: Having 2 projects: PortableClassLibrary (supporting .Net 4.5; Windows Store; Windows Phone 8) with 1 class: public class Weird { public static ConfiguredTaskAwaitable GetConfiguredTaskAwaitable() { return new ConfiguredTaskAwaitable(); } } ConsoleApplication with code: static void Main(string[] args) { Weird.GetConfiguredTaskAwaitable(); } Notes: replacing ConfiguredTaskAwaitable with ConfiguredTaskAwaitable<T> (a generic version) fixes this strange issue consuming this method form WP8 or Win8 app under Debugger works fine. Currently it causes problems cause I cant run my Unit Tests under Debugger. I'm forced to change my "ObjectUnderTest" implementation to return generic ConfiguredTaskAwaitable<T>, which is fine for the real project, but still is only a workaround. The Question is: does anybody knows the reason of this error? It definitely related to Portable Class Library magic.

• Refactoring method that was previously injected with implement

  Greetings, I'm trying to override or extend the Element.show() and .hide() methods in mootools in order to add some WAI-Aria toggling. I was trying to use the Class.Refactor() method like this: Element = Class.refactor(Element, { show: function(displayString) { result = this.previous(displayString); // Do my thing return result; }, hide: function() { result = this.previous(); // Do my thing return result; } }); however, this is not working, previous is null and I think the reason is that Mootools injects those methods through Element.implement. So the methods are not native? I have figured out how to completely replace .show and .hide but I would like to retain all of their existing functionality and just add to it. Any ideas?

But when I used this on 'temporary internet files' folder in windows, am getting this error. Please help to sort out this issue.

• Webservice for serial port devices

  Hi I want to create a remote webservice for an application that is now avaliable only localy. This application controlls three devices (each is controlled separately) connected on serial port. The problem is that I don't know how to take care of passing back information that a device return requested data. For example - I send move command to the motion device (which is very slow and can take a minute or more). Can I just set a big timeout on the client side (and server side) and return for example a true/false if operation is completed or is this a bad idea? Is SOAP with big timeouts ok? And the other question is if Mono on Linux (Ubuntu 9.10, Mono 2.4) is stable enought for making a web service or should I chose Java or some other language? I'm open for recommendations. • Heroku "We're sorry, but something went wrong." due to javascript_include_tag

  Uploading my ruby on rails app to heroku causes the following error: We're sorry, but something went wrong. This does not occur on my local machine. After some debugging, I think I may have spotted the error, but do not know how to fix it. In my file application.html.erb, removing the following line solves the problem, but then my app loses its jquery mobile theme. Any ideas what I could do to fix the problem?   Is there a way to prevent an annotation in a MKMapView instance from being enabled. In other words, when the user taps the red pin on the map, is there a way to prevent it from highlighting the pin. Right now the pin turns dark when touched...   I'm learning Scala and I want to know the best way of expressing this imperative pattern using Scala's functional programming capabilities. def f(l: List[Int]): Boolean = { for (e <- l) { if (test(e)) return true } } return false } The best I can come up with is along the lines of: l map { e => test(e) } contains true But this is less efficient since it calls test() on each element, whereas the imperative version stops on the first element that satisfies test(). Is there a more idiomatic functional programming technique I can use to the same effect? The imperative version seems awkward in Scala.
