• How to connect to DSL modem using PPPoE?

  Hello, I am connecting to the internet through a pppoe connection, but for some reason I can not connect to my modem (it's address is 192.168.1.1). Before I set my pppoe connection, I could connect. So, is there a way? • Serve up PC hard drive as USB mass storage

  Is there a software package available that can serve up a hard-drive internal to a PC and make it available over USB to other USB Master nodes as mass storage? Ex: take your C: or /dev/hda drive on a PC (let's call the computer PC-A), and run a driver program which makes your C: or /dev/hda drive available to external devices as USB mass storage. When you'd hook up another PC (PC-B) to PC-A via USB, it would detect a USB mass storage device, which is C: or /dev/hda on PC-A. Is this even possible? EDIT: I know that there are other ways of making data on a drive available between two different computers (eg. putting PC-A's hdd in a USB-drive-enclosure, or having PC-A make the hdd available via a network share). But I'd like to know if the method that I describe above is even technically possible.

• Which Linux book for aspiring sysadmin?

  I have a co-worker who insists that he will never buy a book unless it is considered "THE" book. So, in this vein, I thought I'd ask what the ultimate Linux book is. I wouldn't quite call myself a complete beginner since I can get around in Linux in general pretty well. But, beyond that, I'm also looking for a book with an eye towards becoming a Sys Admin someday. I saw a Junior Sys Admin position open up recently but with the requisite 2-3 years experience, I may have to wait a little while longer before I'm ready to apply for such a position. Having said all that, I'll summarize my question: What is the ultimate Linux book for someone who is ok with the basic tasks of getting around in Linux but also wants to aim towards full Sys Admin status someday? • How to promote code reuse and documentation?

  As a team lead of about 10+ developers, I would want to promote code reuse. We have written a lot of code-- a lot of them are repetitive over the past few years. The problem now is that a lot of these code are just duplicate of some other code or a slight variation of them. I have started the movement ( discussion) on how to make code into components so that they can be reused for the future projects, but the problem is that I afraid the new developers or other developers who are ignorant of the components will just go forward and write their own thing. Is there anyway to remind the developers to reuse the components/ improve the documentation/ contribute to the underlying component instead of duplicating the existing code and tweaking on it or just write their own? How to make the components easily discover-able, easily usable so that everyone will use it? Edit: I think every developer knows about the benefit of reusable components and wants to use them, it's just that we don't know how to make them discoverable. Also, the developers when they are writing code, they know they should write reusable code but lack of the motivation to do so.

• Restrict access to ESXi

  What is the best option to restrict access to ESXi machine so that it could be managed using VSphere client from only certain hosts? I know there is no built-in firewall and everyone recommends placing an ESXi machine behind a firewall, but when this is not an option... Is there any other option like using hosts.allow/deny or anything else? Or I better use ESX instead of ESXi? Edit: In the given circumstances, I am not able to add any additional hardware or use things like managed switches.

• Apache htaccess results in files being downloaded instead of displayed

  So I had this "beautiful" website that did exactly what I wanted it to do. Then I shut down my PC, reboot and...the pages just download now instead of being displayed. I re-installed XAMPP and launched Apache again and I was able to identify the .htaccess file as the cause of the problem. • How do I get google to see keywords on a one page web application site?

  I'm going to have to link to the web site to explain this, http://www.diagram.ly, it's a free service, so I hope this doesn't break advertising rules. Basically, it's a one page web application, I don't want to create a web site for it. Some background text loads and if JavaScript is enabled, the web application itself then loads. The problem is that Google only seems to be picking up the title of the page and the text on the footer, so the site only appear on Google search for very limited text (based on the title and meta description mostly). I was hoping that search engines would pick up on the background text and index that. The text is factual, not keyword stuffed. Yahoo seems to pick up the text, just not Google. Does anyone have any experience of how Google would view such a site and where I could put the text for a better result? Edit I should mention that Google Webmaster Tools lists the site keywords as "Component, diagramly, feed, mxgraph, share and twitter". Basically the footer and little else.

• Mark as read on delete in Outlook?

  I'd like Outlook to mark any messages I delete to be marked as read. For bonus points, I'd like it to only do this on messages that I have opened/previewed before pressing delete since this means I've looked at the content and chosen to delete it. I know I can set it to mark as read after x seconds when I'm looking at it, that's not what I want. I also know that I can move off the message & back on to it or right click to mark as read - still not what I want. I'm using Outlook 2007 in case that matters. [Edit: I just found I can at least mark as read with a keyboard shortcut: Ctrl-Q, but again, it'd be nice to not have to do this. More shortcuts here.]

• VIM zsh, bash and colors in command line on Ubuntu

  I have problem with VIM command line when calling system commands. e.g. !ls, all command output colors aren't parsed by VIM. My system is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with VIM 7.3.429 from Ubuntu repositories. Is there any workaround for this problem? • Slow dvd burning/reading speeds: how to solve

  I have a problem on which I'm struggling since i started using linux a year ago on my desktop, but still haven't found a solution for it. When reading or burning a dvd, the speeds are very slow (mostly under 1x) whilst I did selected the fastest speed in k3b. As such, it takes up to 40-50 minutes to burn one dvd! • Firefox 4 crashing in VNC

  On my desktop PC I've been using Kubuntu 10.04 for about a year. Recently I've updated Firefox to version 4 using aptitude and the mozilla-team/firefox-stable repository. Since then, I can't run it when I'm logged in through a VNC session. Firefox crashes immediately: when I try to run it from the console I get this error: ###!!! Firefox 3.x worked fine also from a VNC session. I tried to turn off the hardware acceleration from the Firefox preferences, but that doesn't fix the problem. firefox --sync, firefox -safe-mode and firefox -ProfileManager also crash the same way. Any idea how to troubleshoot this? Thanks. Edit: additional info. • Running 12.04 as a gateway - resolvconf, dhclient and dnsmasq integration

  I have a gateway server which is set up originally with Ubuntu desktop 12.04 - perhaps a mistake, I don't know, something to bear in mind. I ripped out network-manager and now want to get resolvconf, dhclient and dnsmasq to play well together. dhclient gets the gateway's eth0 WAN ip address and the ISP DNS name server from the modem. dnsmasq needs to serve dhcp to the rest of the lan on eth1 and acts as a DNS cache both for the lan and for the gateway machine. I also set up iptables as a firewall. Right now, the gateway's /etc/resolv.conf shows only name server = 127.0.0.1 which is correct AFAIK. However I don't think that dhclient is giving dnsmasq the ISP DNS name server nor is dnsmasq picking up the OpenDNS and Google name servers I specified in /etc/network/interfaces - at the moment look-ups, i.e. ping or surfing, don't work unless I manually edit /etc/resolv.conf to put in an upstream name server like 8.8.8.8 So I removed the resolvconf package. Now I'm not getting dhcp on my lan and I'm not able to do DNS look-ups on the host itself - I can surf and ping on the net, but not 127.0.0.1. Where do I go from here? This setup with the config for dhclient and dnsmasq, and the same resolv.conf and hosts files worked on my old debian box.

  I´m currently working on a 2D Engine containing an isometric tile map. It´s running quite well but I'm not sure if I´ve chosen the best approach for that kind of engine. What I want my engine to support is like having groups of MapCells since I would like to add objects to my tile map (e.g. a house with a size of 2x2 tiles). How should I do that? Should I edit my MapCell object that it may has a reference to other related tiles and how can I find an object while clicking on single MapCells? Or should I do another approach using a global container with all objects in it?

• Visual Studio 2005 Open Project Dialog Slow as Molasses

  Hi, Whenever I try to open a project in Visual Studio 2005 (Windows XP), my open project dialog become slow as molasses - navigating down one level of folders typically takes almost 60 seconds. Finding the project and opening it can take up 4-5 minutes, which is just ridiculous. I've checked the open project dialogs of other programs - only VS2005 is acting this way. What could be causing this problem and how do I go about solving it (apart from reinstalling VS2005 / windows) (Edit: Even VS2008 on the same machine does not have this problem. • Welcome 2011

  About this time last year, I wrote a blog post about how January of 2010 was almost over and I hadn’t done a single blog post.  Ugh…  History repeats itself. 2010 in Review If I look back at 2010, it was a great year in terms of technology and development: Visited Redmond to attend the MVP Summit in February.  Had a great time with the MS product teams and got to connect with some really smart people. Continued my work on Visual Studio Magazine’s “C# Corner” column.  About mid-year, the column changed from an every-other-month print column to an every-other-month print column along with bi-monthly web-only articles.  Needless to say, this kept me even busier and away from my blog. Participated in another GiveCamp!  Thanks to the wonderful leadership of Michael Eaton and all of his minions, GiveCamp 2010 was another great success.  Planning for GiveCamp 2011 will be starting soon… I switched to DVCS full time.  After years of being a loyal SVN user, I got bit by the DVCS bug.  I played around with both Mercurial and Git and finally settled on Mercurial.  It’s seamless integration with Windows Explorer along with it’s wealth of plugins made me fall in love.  I can’t imagine going back and using a centralized version control system. Continued to work with the awesome group of talent at SRT Solutions.  Very proud that SRT won it’s third consecutive FastTrack award! Jumped off the BlackBerry train and enjoying the smooth ride of Android.  It was time to replace the old BlackBerry Storm so I did some research and settled on the Motorola DroidX.  I couldn’t be happier.  Android is a slick OS and the DroidX is a sweet piece of hardware.  Been dabbling in some Android development with both Eclipse and IntelliJ IDEA (I like IntelliJ IDEA a lot better!).   2011 Plans On January 1st I was pleasantly surprised to get an email from the Microsoft MVP program letting me know that I had received the MVP award again for my community work in 2010.  I’m honored and humbled to be recognized by Microsoft as well as my peers! I’ll continue to do some Android development.  I’m currently working on a simple app to get me feet wet.  It may even makes it’s way into the Android Market. I’ve got a project that could really benefit from WPF so I’ll be diving into WPF this year.  I’ve played around with WPF a bit in the past – simple demos and learning exercises – but this will give me a chance to build an entire application in WPF.  I’m looking forward to the increased freedom that a WPF UI should give me. • Why does a group policy not applied to the domain administrator account?

  I have a working policy on my entire domain. I just found out, when logging with the domain administrator, that this policy is not applied (EDIT: Running : gpresult shows that the GPO's are applied - but, this GPO is for Drive Mappings, and the actual drive mappings are NOT shown) The administrator account - does not have any login script on his profile tab. My GPO's are mainly small/atomic settings: single GPO to handle each settings: UAC, Firewall, printers. GPO status for the object is enabled That's an overview of the Drive Maps: Reading on MS support site, I checked the delegation tab, and it is marked as applied to domain and enterprise admins. Every user gets these policies correctly. The OU that is set is the root of the domain. (for testing purpose - I did that to eliminate hierarchy issues - did not help) Block Inheritance is disabled. (never used it anyway) GPO link GPO Security Filterings

• Monitoring CPU Usage Over the Course of a Day?

  Are there any apps I an install on client machines that will generate a report for me what app used what % of the CPU. We have some machines that are running, at times, VERY slowly. The machine will run really poorly then boom, back up to full speed. There isn't usually enough time to check Task Manager real quickly to see what is running, not to mention the majority of the time there are people using the computer that don't know what the Task Manager is. ;) It would be really nice to take a look at some logs and see if, maybe, the anti virus is randomly taking alot of CPU for stretches of time. • Microsoft Entourage/Exchange Server problem: all objects disappeared from server - still in some for

  One of our employees works with Entourage on his MacBook Pro (OSX 10.6) accessing Exchange Server 2007. Last Friday morning, I think while working over a VPN, Entourage (I think it was Entourage) deleted all his objects (mail, calendar, contacts) on the server and while creating a lot of strange folders (starting with underscores) on the client. The local data seems to be there, but not in a consistent form. Since the user's mailbox is rather big, I suspect, that there was some kind of "move" operation which did not complete. I tried to export the data, but the export stops because of a corrupted object. Is there a tool or another way to export or retrieve the local data? Edit - FYI: we solved the problem getting his data from the previous night's backup.
