• What are some interesting fringe programming topics that might have hands-on training?

  Whenever training topic questions are asked, the answers are fairly typical, and involve a pretty limited subset of topics like OO, design patterns, algorithms, web services, SQL, etc., but I wonder if there are some fringe topics that are still applicable to the programming field and would give me a more rounded approach to development. When I think of "fringe", I think of 2600: The Hacker Quarterly articles that discuss how to use real world (sometimes obscure) exploits, or something like Maker Faire that demonstrates embedded systems programming using Arduino. I have around $1500-2000 to spend, and my job entails Java technologies, but that does not limit my options.

• How to write custom reports in Drupal

  What's the "right" way in Drupal to create reports? I was hoping to use a view but am not having much luck. My goal is to create a table of rows containing three fields: user name, location, SUM of volunteer hours. Once I have this part working, I plan to expose filters for Location and Date. Views Calc only allows you to group by one field. I know Crystal Reports and MSSQL Reporting Services and I was hoping to find a similar kind of thing for Drupal. Is there a framework, examples, or a module to help with this, or do I need to write a custom module implementing the views_alter_SQL hook to get the desired data for each report? • referencing an instantiated object in another class in objective C

  hi, I am working in xcode on an ipod app in objective C, and I have a field (navigationController) in one of my classes (rootViewController). How do I reference the instantiated rootViewController's navigationController from another class? For example, how would I do this if I want to reference the navigationController from the FirstViewController.m class? I seem to only be able to find references for this to reference the application delegate. If I want to reference the application delegate with FirstViewController, I just say: MyAppDelegate *delegate = [[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate]; [delegate.navigationController pushViewController:childController animated:YES]; how do I do this for the rootViewController class instead of MyAppDelegate?

  We have created a WCF service hosted in a windows service that handles Authentication requests. The only behavior is : ServiceMetadataBehavior smb = new ServiceMetadataBehavior(); smb.HttpGetEnabled = true; selfHost.Description.Behaviors.Add(smb); Our clients are able to authenticate succesfully 10 times then we get the error The operation has timed out When we increase the MaxConcurrentSessions = 50 then our clients can authenticate 50 times before we see the error. Clearly sessions are not being closed after the authentication call is made can anyone tell why this might be happening?

  I have a modal dialog box presented in Yahoo UI. The user selects a value from dialog "A", and then I want to present another modal dialog box to collect some more data in dialog "B". I have been using the YAHOO.widget.Dialog successfully. The problem seems to be that you can't initiate dialog window "B" from the handler function of dialog "A". So, how can you programmatically launch a second dialog window after the user hits the "OK" button on the first ? (I had tried to create an additional Listener for a field that is updated in dialog "A" to trigger dialog "B" but this doesn't work either.) Thanks..

  Hi, I'm using VS 2005 and .NET framework 2.0 SP2 to build an application with a datagridview in it. I'm using Microsoft Word 11.0 Object Library to do the spelling checker on one of the field in datagridview. When it detected a spelling and grammar window would pop-up open on top of the datagridview. The problem I got was when I moved the pop-up window to the new location, there's still an image of the pop-up window left behind the previous location. The more I moved the more of those copied image would be created on screen. How I can overcome this problem? Thanks in advance, Andrew

  Hello, I'm having trouble displaying the only date part of a datetime into a textbox using TextBoxFor<,(expression, htmlAttributes). The model is based on Linq2SQL, field is a DateTime on SQL and in the Entity model. Failed : <%= Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.dtArrivalDate, String.Format("{0:dd/MM/yyyy}", Model.dtArrivalDate))%> Ps : this trick seems to be depreciated, any string value in the object htmlAttribute is ignored. Failed : [DisplayFormat( DataFormatString= "{0:dd/MM/yyyy}" )] public string dtArrivalDate { get; set; } I would like to store and display the date part only on the details/edit view without the "00:00:00" part.   Programmers seem to live in a world of their own (as this site indicates), with their own vibrant culture - and their own premises and vocabulary. Once we've been in the field for a bit, we take a lot of things for granted. But I'm often faced with the question "What do you do?" Or "What is programming?" I generally try to answer this with a small, often trivial, real-world example of how programming is prevalent in our everyday lives and keeps things running. The example I use most often is an elevator - someone has to program the logic of that... And I've seen elevators that are "smart" and ones that are quite backwards and foolish. (And you can easily understand if/decision and looping from that... incorporates a lot of important programming concepts in a very small example.) I've sometimes heard people use traffic lights as an example. What example do you / would you use to explain the concept of programming to someone completely clueless?

  I have 2 tables/models, which for all practical purposes are the same as the standard Author/Book example, but with the additional restriction that in my application each Author can only write 0 or 1 books. (eg, the ForeignKey field in the Book model is or can be a OneToOneField, and there may be authors who have no corresponding book in the Book table.) I would like to be able to display a form showing multiple books and also show some fields from the corresponding Author table (eg author_name, author_address). I followed the example of the inlineformset and but that doesn't even display the author name in the generated form.

  I am working on a website in PHP where people can make comments similar to a blog, and I only want particular tags to be allowed. Are there any pre-built libraries that process comments and produce valid XHTML Strict code? I would need to do this in JavaScript so I can generate a live preview like Stack Overflow, plus in PHP before saving it to a MySQL database. The allowed HTML tags will be: strong, em, blockquote, and links (rel=nofollow not required) One way would be to allow people to directly enter the HTML into the comment field but I would prefer to use a simple mark up something like this (can be different - this is an example): *strong* _em_ [blockquote] http://www.link.com I want line breaks to be converted to <br />. Are there any code libraries that do the above?

  Hi, i have part of Asp.NET 1.1 project. I work with remote site, which works incorrect in some cases - sometimes it write incorrect Content-Encoding header. In my code i get HttpResponse from this remote site. And if Content-Encoding header is equals, for example, "gzip", i need to set Content-Encoding header to "deflate". But there is no properties or methods in HttpResponse class to get Content-Encoding header. Content-Encoding property returns, in my case, "UTF-8". In Watch window i see _customProperties field, which contain wrong string value. How can i change header value with Asp.NET 1.1?

  Howdy all, I'm working with a UITextField that holds a localized currency value. I've seen lots of posts on how to work with this, but my question is: how do I re-apply currency formatting to the UITextField after every key press? I know that I can set up and use a currency formatter with: NSNumberFormatter *currencyFormatter = [[NSNumberFormatter alloc] init]; [currencyFormatter setNumberStyle:NSNumberFormatterCurrencyStyle]; ... [currencyFormatter stringFromNumber:...]; but I don't know how to hook it up. For instance, if the value in the field reads "$12,345" and the user taps the "6" key, then the value should change to "$123,456". Which callback is the "correct" one to do this in (should I use textField:shouldChangeCharactersInRange:replacementString: or a custom target-action) and how do I use the NSNumberFormatter to parse and re-apply formatting to the UITextField's text property? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

• Lightweight Object->Database in python

  I am in need of a lightweight way to store dictionaries of data into a database. What I need is something that: Creates a database table from a simple type description (int, float, datetime etc) Takes a dictionary object and inserts it into the database (including handling datetime objects!) If possible: Can handle basic references, so the dictionary can reference other tables I would prefer something that doesn't do a lot of magic. I just need an easy way to setup and get data into an SQL database. What would you suggest? There seems to be a lot of ORM software around, but I find it hard to evaluate them.

  Hi, In my mysql database I have the following information in a page name field. ç,Ç,ö,Ö,ü,Ü,i,I,s,S,g,G If I do a phpmyadmin dump the above is exported. I am using a different php script and instead of the above I am getting this. "\303\247,\303\207,\303\266,\303\226,\303\274,\303\234,\304\261,\304\260,\305\237,\305\236,\304\237,\304\236" This is the snippet which is generating the output. $data_sql = "SELECT * FROM ".$table_name; $data_res = @mysql_query($data_sql); while($data_row = @mysql_fetch_array($data_res,MYSQL_NUM)) { print_r($data_row); } How can I modify this to make sure that the data is correct? Is some sort of php function required? Do I need to do something to the file? Any advice is much appreciated.

• Text encoding in HTML text fields

  I have a site up that has a form on it. The form POSTs to a php script which then inserts the data into my database. The page has a charset=UTF-8 attribute in the <meta> tag, and the database is setup to use UTF-8. However, when I copy and paste characters from MS Word into the field, the output is messed up. For example, the quotes in I am using "Microsoft Word" '''' become I am using “Microsoft Word†???? in the database. Anyone have any idea why this might occur?

  Hi, I'm new to MySQL, I am trying to create a text file using a stored procedure. I'm currently at the stage where I have a temporary table that contains all of the records that I want to output to a text file. I have the following line at the end of my SP, it works in PHPMYAdmin's query but it does not work when part of a stored procedure the code is as follows: SELECT * into outfile '../../htdocs/VIP/Temp/temp.txt' from tmp_Menu2; note that tmp_Menu2 is a table that only includes one field of type VARCHAR(1000) Any help would be greathly appreciated.
