• Database Mail and SMO are indeed supported on 64-bit, Standard Edition instances of SQL Server 2012

    This is something that comes up rather regularly at forums, so I decided to create a quick post to make sure that folks out there can feel better about SQL Server 2012. If you read this Web article, “Features Supported By Editions of SQL Server 2012” as of time of writing this post, you will see that the article points out that these two features are not supported on x64 Standard Edition. This is NOT correct. It is most definitely a documentation bug – one that unfortunately has caused some customers to sit on a waiting pattern before upgrading to SQL Server 2012. Database Mail and SMO indeed work and are fully supported on SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition x64 instances. These features work as they should. I have contacted the documentation teams internally to make sure that this is reflected on next releases of said Web article.

  I have done a fair bit of work with relational databases, and think I understand the basic concepts of good schema design pretty well. I recently was tasked with taking over a project where the DB was designed by a highly-paid consultant. Please let me know if my gut intinct - "WTF??!?" - is warranted, or is this guy such a genius that he's operating out of my realm? DB in question is an in-house app used to enter requests from employees. Just looking at a small section of it, you have information on the users, and information on the request being made. I would design this like so: User table: UserID (primary Key, indexed, no dupes) FirstName LastName Department Request table RequestID (primary Key, indexed, no dupes) <...> various data fields containing request details UserID -- foreign key associated with User table Simple, right? Consultant designed it like this (with sample data): UsersTable UserID FirstName LastName 234 John Doe 516 Jane Doe 123 Foo Bar DepartmentsTable DepartmentID Name 1 Sales 2 HR 3 IT UserDepartmentTable UserDepartmentID UserID Department 1 234 2 2 516 2 3 123 1 RequestTable RequestID UserID <...> 1 516 blah 2 516 blah 3 234 blah The entire database is constructed like this, with every piece of data encapsulated in its own table, with numeric IDs linking everything together. Apparently the consultant had read about OLAP and wanted the 'speed of integer lookups' He also has a large number of stored procedures to cross reference all of these tables.   I recently came up with a problem which I would like to share some thoughts about with someone on this forum. This relates to finding a subset. In reality it is more complicated, but I tried to present it here using some simpler concepts. To make things easier, I created this conceptual DB model: Let's assume this is a DB for storing recipes. Recipe can have many instructions steps and many ingredients. Ingredients are stored in a cupboard and we know how much of each ingredient we have. Now, when we create a recipe, we have to define how much of each ingredient we need. When we want to use a recipe, we would just check if required amount is less than available amount for each product and then decide if we can cook a dinner - if amount required for at least one ingredient is less than available amount - recipe cannot be cooked. Simple sql query to get the result. This is straightforward, but I'm wondering, how should I work when the problem is stated the other way round, i.e. how to find recipies which can be cooked only from ingredients that are available? I hope my explanation is clear, but if you need any more clarification, please ask.

  Windows 2008 R2, standard. No firewall locally on it. Newly setup because an old SQL2000 had two disks die (or could it be the raid controller?) at the same time. Luckily, I had fresh backups. The databases have been restored, and SP2 for SQL2008 applied. I can see various hosts trying to establish a session, but the (customer) sites does not work and I don't see the expected established sessions. A wireshark reveals a full three-way handshake. Since it's customer machines connecting, I cannot logon to them and restart application pools.. What on earth could be causing this?   I'm working with a legacy application which I'm trying to change so that it can work with SQL CE, whilst it was originally written against SQL Server. The problem I am getting now is that when I try to do dataAdapter.Update, SQL CE complains that it is not expecting the SELECT keyword in the command text. I believe this is because SQL CE does not support batch SELECT statements. The auto-generated table adapter command looks like this... this._adapter.InsertCommand.CommandText = @"INSERT INTO [Table] ([Field1], [Field2]) VALUES (@Value1, @Value2); SELECT Field1, Field2 FROM Table WHERE (Field1 = @Value1)"; What is it doing? It looks like it is inserting new records from the datatable into the database, and then reading that record back from the database into the datatable? What's the point of that? Can I just go through the code and remove all these SELECT statements? Or is there an easier way to solve my problem of wanting to use these data adapters with SQL CE? I cannot regenerate these table adapters, as the people who knew how to have long since left.

• Ado.net Fill method not throwing error on running a Stored Procedure that does not exist.

  I am using a combination of the Enterprise library and the original Fill method of ADO. Now if I pass into the variable StoredProcName = "ThisProcDoesNotExists" And run this peice of code. The CreateCommand nor da.Fill through an error message. Why is this. The only way I can tell it did not run was that it returns a dataset with 0 tables in it. But when investigating the error it is not appearant that the procedure does not exist. EDIT Upon further investigation command.Connection.FireInfoMessageEventOnUserErrors = true; is causeing the error to be surpressed into the InfoMessage Event From BOL When you set FireInfoMessageEventOnUserErrors to true, errors that were previously treated as exceptions are now handled as InfoMessage events. All events fire immediately and are handled by the event handler. If is FireInfoMessageEventOnUserErrors is set to false, then InfoMessage events are handled at the end of the procedure. What I want is each print statement from Sql to create a new log record. Setting this property to false combines it as one big string. So if I leave the property set to true, now the question is can I discern a print message from an Error ANOTHER EDIT So now I have the code so that the flag is set to true and checking the error number in the method void Connection_InfoMessage(object sender, SqlInfoMessageEventArgs e) { // These are not really errors unless the Number >0 // if Number = 0 that is a print message foreach (SqlError sql in e.Errors) { if (sql.Number == 0) { Logger.WriteInfo("Sql Message",sql.Message); } else { // Whatever this was it was an error throw new DataException(String.Format("Message={0},Line={1},Number={2},State{3}", sql.Message, sql.LineNumber, sql.Number, sql.State)); } } } The issue now that when I throw the error it does not bubble up to the statement that made the call or even the error handler that is above that.
