• Python - Problems using mechanize to log into a difficult website

  I would like to have a button on a web page with the following behavior: On the first click, open a pop-up. On later clicks, if the pop-up is still open, just bring it to the front. If not, re-open. The below code generally works in Firefox, Safari, and IE8 (see here for Chrome woes). However, I have found a failure mode in Firefox that I don't know how to deal with: If for some reason the user has opened a second tab in the pop-up window and that second tab has focus within that window, the popupWindow.focus() command fails to have any effect. (If the first tab has focus within that window, everything works just great.) • VSTO Outlook - Contact iteration is SO SLOW!

  I'm working on an outlook add-in and I have a dialog window that allows the user to select contacts. I havent been able to find a way to use the outlook contact window so I am looping through the ContactFolder.Items and doing my work that way. The problem is that I have to handle up to 70K contacts. I tried multi-threading and many other things but it is just so slow. It takes 15 seconds to load 30k contacts. I can load and bind 500k POCO objects in milliseconds but when I need to get the contact items from outlook it just takes forever. The problem seems to be when you actually need to get a property from the contactitem it has to fetch it from the database or something. Is there a contact cache I can pull from? I only need Display and Email, nothing else. An ID would be nice but I don't need it. Can someone please tell me a better way of getting contacts from outlook or at least tell me how to open the outlook contact selection window? I was able to find code to open it but it wont let me because I'm showing a modal dialog and it wont open if there is a modal open.

• Pickled my dictionary from ZODB but i got a less in size one?

  I use ZODB and i want to copy my 'database_1.fs' file to another 'database_2.fs', so I opened the root dictionary of that 'database_1.fs' and I (pickle.dump) it in a text file. Then I (pickle.load) it in a dictionary-variable, in the end I update the root dictionary of the other 'database_2.fs' with the dictionary-variable. It works, but I wonder why the size of the 'database_1.fs' not equal to the size of the other 'database_2.fs'. • SQL Server Connection Timeout C#

  First off I'd like to let everyone know I have searched my particular problem and can't seem to find what's causing my problem. I have an SQL Server 2008 instance running on a network machine and a client I have written connecting to it. To connect I have a small segment of code that establishes a connection to an sql server 2008 instance and returns a DataTable populated with the results of whatever query I run against the server, all pretty standard stuff really. Anyway the issue is, whenever I open my program and call this method, upon the first call to my method, regardless as to what I've set my Connection Timeout value as in the connection string, it takes about 15 seconds and then times out. Bizarrely though the second or third call I make to the method will work without a problem. I have opened up the ports for SQL Server on the server machine as outlined in this article: How to Open firewall ports for SQL Server and verified that it is correctly configured. The script works fine for a user that has < 5000 followers but I tried adjusting the script using cursors to collect the complete set of users. • JQM Nested Popups

  I am having a hard time with the new Alpha release of JQM not showing nested popups. For example, I am displaying a popup form that the user is supposed to fill out, if the server side validation fails, I want to display an error popup. I am finding that the error popup is not being shown. • mysql_tzinfo_to_sql missing on my system

  I ran into problem with timezones within MySQL. Long story short, my application is worldwide, and each database has it's own timezone set within the application (not the server) in the way of "Europe/Berlin", "Europe/Vienna", "America/Sao Paulo". Obviously this is unacceptable for MySQL at first per connection. I read that it handles data better if you use UTC offsets. Basically my goal is to log a field's alteration in another table using a trigger. For that I use UNIX_TIMESTAMP within the trigger. Although UNIX_TIMESTAMP() follows the global timezone for the server which obviously bothers me a lot :| So I went to search for a "per connection" solution to use inside the trigger and well I found that mysql_tzinfo_to_sql can actually import zone info (UTC offsets) from my linux's zoneinfo files. Although to my amuse, when I ran the commant I got the following: bash: mysql_tzinfo_to_sql: command not found So I'm looking for a solution to fix that. I don't want to "map" the timezone names into UTC offset just so I could use in the trigger. Is there an alternative tool? Or at least sources for this one in particular only? What kind of queries does this tool generates so I could do it manually then if there is no alternative tool. Thanks in advance on any help on the issue! P.S: The OS is Debian GNU/Linux 6.0 and the MySQL server is the one from aptitude with performance tweaks with my.cnf

• Auto-archive IMAP mail folders on OS X

  Hi, I am trying to achieve the following. Download all messages from mail server(and remove downloaded messages from server). Downloaded messages should be in a local mailbox preserving folder structure as was defined on server. The download process should be automatic and shouldn't create duplicates. I am on OSX and looking for solutions using Apple Mail or Thunderbird or similar. So far I have found POP is not the way to go (as it looses folder structure and potentially can cause duplicates). The solution described here seems very good but isn't yet available for thunderbird or apple mail. http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging/topics/auto_archive_and_keep_folder_structure. The other alternative is outlook which has auto archive which is paid and I think exports to pst instead of the more common mbox format. Yet another alternative is http://www.pop4.org/ which adds support for folder management to POP. Which I don't think is going to become usable soon. Any other better solutions.? Thank you

  Hello, I am working on a smartphone application that will require a backend web service - but I have absolutely clueless to how much it will cost. Web Service will handle: - login of users - cataloging of our user base - holding minimal profile information for users (the only binary data is a display picture which will be < 20k each) - performing some very minor calculation/algorithm before return results - All the above will be communicated to server from a smartphone (iPhone/BlackBerry/Android) Bandwidth Requirements: - We want to handle up to 10k users throughout the day. - I predict 10k * 50 HTTP requests a day = 500,000 requests a day * 30 = 15 million requests a month Space Requirements: - Data will be in SQL database. - I predict 1MB/user * 10k = 10GB + overhead. In other words - space is not a big issue. Software Requirements: (unless someone knows an alternative) - Windows Server 2008 + IIS - MSFT SQL Server Note: This is 100% new to me, so please hit me with all you got. Do I need Windows Server or are there alternative? Is it better to get multiple cheap servers to distribute load? Will Amazon S3 work for me? How about Windows Azure? Thank you!!

If it carries on I think I'll be forced to shell out the 120 EUR for the NCP Client instead.

• DNS failover in a two datacenter scenario

  I'm trying to implement a low-cost solution for website high availability. I'm looking for the downsides of the following scenario: I have two servers with the same configuration, content, mysql replication (dual-master). They are in different datacenters - let's call them serverA and serverB. Users use serverA - serverB is more like a backup. Now, I want to use DNS failover, to switch users from serverA to serverB when serverA goes down. My idea is that I setup DNS servers (bind/powerdns) on serverA and serverB - let's call them ns1.website.com and ns2.website.com (assuming I own website.com). Then I configure my domain to use them as its nameservers. Both DNS servers will return serverA IP as my website's IP. If serverA goes down I can (either manually or automatically from serverB) change configuration of serverB's DNS, to return IP of serverB as website's IP. Of course the TTL will be low, as it's supposed to be in DNS failovers. I know that it may take some time to switch to serverB (DNS ttl, time to detect serverA failure, serverB DNS reconfiguration etc), and that some small part of users won't use serverB anyway. And I'm OK with that. But what are other downsides of such an approach? An alternative scenario is that ns1.website.com will return serverA IP as website's IP, and ns2.website.com will return serverB IP as website's IP. But AFAIK clients not always use primary nameserver and sometimes would use secondary one. So some small part of users would use serverB instead of serverA which is not quite what I'd like. Can you confirm that DNS clients behave like that and can you tell what percentage of clients would possibly use serverB instead of serverA (statistically)? This one also has the downside that when serverA goes back up, it will be automatically used as website's primary server, which is also a bad situation (cold cache, mysql replication could fail in the meantime etc). So I'm adding it only as a theoretical alternative. I was thinking about using some professional DNS failover companies but they charge for the number of DNS requests and the fees are very high (why?)

• Does a VPN requirement kill the concept of having a Web Application in the Cloud?

  Recently I posted a question in SO, but so far I got no answers. I wonder if I'm asking the wrong question. This is the problem: We need to design an application which offers a public http web service, but at the same time it must consume some services through a VPN connection from other existing company. There is no other alternative but to use a VPN connection to access those services. We want to host our application in some cloud infrastructure like Heroku or Amazon EC2. But there is no direct way to access the VPN services of the other company from there. The solution I'm thinking, but I don't like is to have a different server to expose the services from that VPN. But this will require the setup of another server which I prefer to avoid. In the case this is the solution, can I use an Amazon EC2 instance to connect to a VPN? This is what I was thinking, is it correct? I don't have experience using VPNs, tunnels or those kind of networking stuff. I will really appreciate if you can propose me an alternative solution, or just give me a comment.

• Enterprise Library Logging / Exception handling and Postsharp

  One of my colleagues came-up with a unique situation where it was required to create log files based on the input file which is uploaded. For example if A.xml is uploaded, the corresponding log file should be A_log.txt. I am a strong believer that Logging / EH / caching are cross-cutting architecture aspects and should be least invasive to the business-logic written in enterprise application. I have been using Enterprise Library for logging / EH (i use to work with Avanade, so i have affection towards the library!! :D ). I have been also using excellent library called PostSharp for cross cutting aspect. Here i present a solution with and without PostSharp all in a unit test. Please see full source code at end of the this blog post. But first, we need to tweak the enterprise library so that the log files are created at runtime based on input given. • WPF Blurry Images - Bitmap Class

  I am using the following sample at http://blogs.msdn.com/dwayneneed/archive/2007/10/05/blurry-bitmaps.aspx within VB.NET. The code is shown below. I am having a problem when my application loads the CPU is pegging 50-70%. I have determined that the problem is with the Bitmap class. The OnLayoutUpdated() method is calling the InvalidateVisual() continously. This is because some points are not returning as equal but rather, Point(0.0,-0.5) Can anyone see any bugs within this code or know a better implmentation for pixel snapping a Bitmap image so it is not blurry? p.s. The sample code was in C#, however I believe that it was converted correctly.
