• Design support for templated UserControl

  Hello, I have created a real simple templated UserControl using the following tutorial: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/36574bf6(VS.80).aspx I can now add this control to my mvc 2.0 application using: <components:Box BoxType="Help" Title="Content Title" runat="server"> <Content> <%: Html.TextBox("test") %> This is my awesome content!<br /> <b>Test</b> </Content> </components:Box> However, when I go to the designer, I get an exception: Type 'System.Web.UI.UserControl' does not have a public property named 'Content'. How can I fix this? I don't even need to use the drag-and-drop designer, just rendering the control will do fine. Thanks!

• C# pulling out columns from combobox text

  What i have is four comboboxes and two files. If the column matches the combobox i need to write it out to a file but it has to appened with the second combobox. So for example Combobox1: Apple | Orange Combobox2: Pineapple | Plum I have selected Apple Plum I need to search threw a text file and find whatever columns is Apple or Plum: Orange|Pear|Peach|Turnip|Monkey|Apple|Grape|Plum and then i need to write out just the columns Apple|Plum to a new text file. Any help would be awesome! Better example Combobox1 selected item:Apple Combobox2 selected item:Plum Text FILE: APPLE|Pear|Plum|Orange 1|2|3|4 215|3|45|98 125|498|76|4 4165|465|4|65 Resulting File: 1|3 215|45 125|76 4165|4 Thanks for the advice, i dont need help on adding to combobox or reading the files, just how to create a file from a delimited file having multiple columns.

• vb.net array for slideshow button

  Hey all, i am in the middle of trying to figure out how to go about doing this... I have a form that i call like so: call frmSlideShow.showWhat(1,4,8,9,11,22) Each of the numbers represents a different image slide (slide1.png, slide4.png, etc..). The problem i am having is trying to create a "previous" and "next" button to flip through them all. Trying to figure out what number the user is on and going from there and seeing what numbers are still left from the list above that was sent, etc. If anyone has an idea how i would go about doing that then that would be awesome! :) David

• Wicket Drag and drop functionality for adding an image

  I'm making a wicket app that can manage some options for a cashdesk app. One of the options is to change the image of a selected Product. The user(manager) can choose from the already present images in the database (SQL) when this option is selected, or add a new image if the desired image is not present. Don't mention the test names and awesome images (it's still in test-fase) I prefer to see the adding of an image achieved by Drag and Drop html5 demo [dnd-upload] (From the desktop into the browser) I'm currently using Wicket-6.2.0 and wicket-dnd 0.5.0 and i can't seem to get this working! All examples I can find are from wicket 2.x or lower. It is possible to use drag and drop in Wicket-6.2, but how do I achieve this? There seems to be some DraggableBehavior in wicket? Any help is welcome! [UPDATE] Upgraded to wicket-dnd 0.6

• Visual Studio Optimizations

  Visual studio is a pretty awesome IDE, but sometimes you just wish it would go faster. I was wondering if people have any tips or tricks to help speed up visual studio in day to day use. Things that I'm particularly interested in are speeding up build times and switching aspx files from source to design view seem to bring it to a grinding halt. Having said that, I'd be keen to hear anything that anyone uses to make VS run that little bit faster. Edit: Merged answers from related question, covering VS2008SP1.   Hey i am trying to calculate a cosinor analysis in statistica but am at a loss as to how to do so. I need to calculate the MESOR, AMPLITUDE, and ACROPHASE of ciracadian rhythm data. http://www.wepapers.com/Papers/73565/Cosinor_analysis_of_accident_risk_using__SPSS%27s_regression_procedures.ppt there is a link that shows how to do it, the formulas and such, but it has not given me much help. • Why Shouldn't I Programmatically Submit Username/Password to Facebook/Twitter/Amazon/etc?

  I wish there was a central, fully customizable, open source, universal login system that allowed you to login and manage all of your online accounts (maybe there is?)... I just found RPXNow today after starting to build a Sinatra app to login to Google, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, OpenID, and EventBrite, and it looks like it might save some time. But I keep wondering, not being an authentication guru, why couldn't I just have a sleek login page saying "Enter username and password, and check your login service", and then in the background either scrape the login page from say EventBrite and programmatically submit the form with Mechanize, or use an API if there was one? It would be so much cleaner and such a better user experience if they didn't have to go through popups and redirects and they could use any previously existing accounts. My question is: What are the reasons why I shouldn't do something like that? I don't know much about the serious details of cookies/sessions/security, so if you could be descriptive or point me to some helpful links that would be awesome. Thanks!

• Palm webOS CSS Targeting Hack?

  Although it is not good practice, I am looking for a CSS hack to target Palm webOS. The problem is that Safari 3+ is awesome, and I can do some things like gradient background animations on text, but only in Safari. Right now I use @media screen and (-webkit-min-device-pixel-ratio:0) {} and it works like a charm, no Opera, Firefox, or whatever, because if I set the background to the image as I do in Safari they will all be ruined. But Palm's browser is based on webkit, and it uses the rules inside, and Palm's browser doesn't support text backgrounds so all I get is the image moving, no text. I would prefer a CSS hack, but if need be a Javascript one will do.

• acts_as_taggable_on and auto_complete returning no results

  I'm using acts_as_taggable_on in a model, and am trying to implement the auto_complete plugin. It seems as though I have everything hooked up correctly, but the search isn't returning any results. Here's what I have so far: In the view: <%= text_field_with_auto_complete(:link, :tag_list, {}, {:tokens => ','}) %> In the controller: def auto_complete_for_link_tag_list @tags = Link.tag_counts_on(:tags).where('tags.name LIKE ?', params[:link][:tag_list]) render :inline => "<%= auto_complete_result(@tags, 'name') %>", :layout => false logger.info "#{@tags.size} tags found." end The logger keeps returning 0 tags, and nothing shows up in the view (yeah, the layout includes the javascript defaults). • Missing 'DomContentLoaded' and 'load' time information in Firebug's Net Panel.

  Hello, Firebug is awesome in reporting the relative time when an HTTP request was made with respect to the 'DomContentLoaded' and 'load' time. However, once the 'load' event occurs (seen by the red line on the timeline), the requests thereafter do not have any information about how later they occurred with respect to the two events. To confuse things, these requests (usually at the bottom of the timeline) appear to have started right at the beginning of the page load. Could somebody shed some light on what should i infer when i see such entries in the timeline which do not have information about the 'DomContentLoaded' and 'load' event times and appear to have occurred after the page load event, still net panel shows that they started at the beginning?   Hello, I'm developing a MVC .Net site and would like to implement a CMS system. So far I have looked at Umbraco, which looks good but the help is poor and the getting started video section is empty, and dotnetnuke, which again looks good but I get the impression its aimed at non developers, plus to has much more than I need and want. In my last job I created a basic custom CMS system that worked by simply adding values into the database, the application called the text from there. it worked fine but I don’t have the source code. what I'm after is a simple CMS system that really just controls text and images, I dont need all the fancy stuff thats in umbraco and dotnetnuke, all the design and CSS i can do myself. also as im working with MVC (which is awesome, and such a breath of fresh air compared to the web forms/telerik crap I have to put up with at work) it needs to be compatible. A simple CMS, can anyone provide any suggestion ? Truegilly

• Is it worth the time to switch from AjaxControlToolkit to jQuery?

  I keep hearing all these things about how awesome jQuery is and how the AjaxControlToolkit sucks. Unfortunately, I only heard about this after I built my entire WebForms site using the toolkit. Now I am considering switching, if not entirely, mostly to jQuery. This is partially for the experience (having never coded in Javascript or used any frameworks) and partially because I think I have more control over jQuery. There is no pressing need to switch, but I'm considering doing it anyway. Is it worth tackling the learning curve for jQuery just to get the experience, of should I leave my working site well enough alone?

• Change connection on the fly

  Hello, I have a SQL server with 50 databases. Each one has the exact same schema. I used the awesome Subsonic 2.2 create the DAL based on one of them. I need to loop though a list of database names and connect to each one and perform an update one at a time. If there a way to alter how subsonic uses the connection string. I believe I would need to store the connection string in memory that way it can keep changing. Is this possible? I tried doing a ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["theConnStrName"].ConnectionString = updated-connection-string-here; .. but that did not work thanks!

• Email notifications of exceptions happening in a Python app?

In ruby, there is a very elegant solution called ExceptionNotifier, which wraps around the exception handler and uses the built-in mailer to send an email. What is the best way of doing this in Python? I know that this is a very common issue, so would love for any tips that you folks can share! PS: Code samples, pointers to modules would be AWESOME! • django + xmppy: send a message to two recipients

  I'm trying to use xmpppy for sending jabber-messages from a django-website. This works entirely fine. However, the message only gets sent to the -first- of the recipients in the list. This happens when I run the following function from django, and also if I run it from an interactive python-shell. The weird part though, is that if I extract the -body- of the function and run that interactively, then all the recipients (there's just 2 at the moment) get the message. Also, I do know that the inner for-loop gets run the correct count times (2), because the print-statement does run twice, and return two different message-ids.   I am working on a Rails application which uses categories for items. My category model is self-joined so that categories can be nested: class Category < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :items # Self Join (categories can have subcategories) has_many :subcategories, :class_name => "Category", :foreign_key => "parent_id" belongs_to :parent, :class_name => "Category" ... end I have a form which allows a user to create an item which currently lists all categories in a select, but they are all listed together: <%= f.label :category_id %> <%= select :item, :category_id, Category.all.collect {|c| [ c.title, c.id ]} %> So the select looks something like this: Category1 Category2 Category3BelongsTo2 Category4BelongsTo1 But what I want is: Category1 - Category4BelongsTo1 Category2 - Category3BelongsTo2 Is there a helper for this (which would be awesome!)? • Best way to auto-restore a database every hour

  I have a demo site where anyone can login and test a management interface. Every hour I would like to flush all the data in the SQL 2008 Database and restore it from the original. Red Gate Software has some awesome tools for this, however they are beyond my budget right now. Could I simply make a backup copy of the database's data file, then have a c# console app that deletes it and copies over the original. Then I can have a windows schedule task to run the .exe every hour. It's simple and free... would this work? I'm using SQL Server 2008 R2 Web edition I understand that Red Gate Software is technically better because I can set it to analyze the db and only update the records that were altered, and the approach I have above is like a "sledge hammer".

• Geocoding service for a startup?

  I'm working on an idea for a service that uses geocoded data (lat/lng) form a US address. Google maps API v3 has been awesome, until I read the terms of service and acceptable uses a little closer. The problem is that the terms seem to prohibit use of the maps API for any commercial use where the site is not freely accessibly to the public, such as a subscription based service. The alternative offered is Google Maps API Premier, but at $10,000 per year minimum, it's just not possible at this time. Same goes for services offered by Yahoo! and MS - initial fees are small for enterprises, but for a very early stage startup (not even a finished prototype yet!) it's just not doable. Geocoding process needs to be real-time and volume would be very small - user would enter address at setup time and only update it if needed. Any help is greatly appreciated!

• Will iPhone OS4 make your life easier or harder as a lone app developer?

  I am interested to hear what people feel about the new iPhone OS4 release. It is obviously very exciting having access to all the new features, apparently (from apple.com) it has over 1500 new APIs. My original thoughts were "Wow, this is awesome", and I suppose it is. I was just getting comfortable with OS 3.2 development though, and now there is a raft of additional stuff to learn in order to keep up with the pack. So I am feeling quite frustrated! Do you think, when working as an individual app developer, having access to these additional features would improve your applications or just water down the quality? I guess being giving the opportunity to improve applications and provide better features should be welcomed. I think frustration comes from struggling to keep up with the continuous changes, but thats the industry we are in I suppose! Any thoughts/comments?

• Django remove list_editable on a per row basis.

  On the back of Django 1.2RC1, I have built a great administrator for my client! It's awesome. The client has one request that, if not satisfied, could bring this house of cards crashing down. I have a list of swim meet results. A meet result is added by a superuser. A team rep can edit a meet result (which they must be able to do inline, with list_editable), but after they edit the meet result inline and save, they should no longer be able to edit that result inline. They can only perform one edit. So, my question ... can I turn off list_editable on a per row basis?
