    I'm looking for a very cheap machine to run a linux distro for security(anti-thief) software. I would like to be able to connect to the network and a couple of webcams. May be ip-webcams or usb-webcams. The idea is having a machine with batteryes, laptop style, but there is no need to have a display/monitor attatched all the time. I'm planning to spend no more than 200$, in case it also gets stolen. Any advice on what to buy? (all modifications to this security plan are welcome) Thanks.

  • If I double my ram on a x86 processor, does that double the ram I can use for each individual process?

    I don't understand how 32-Bit OS's use RAM on a per process basis. I've read the max RAM my x86 processor running a 32-bit OS can use is 2^32 = 4gb; but that's just for one process, right? 3DS Max keeps crashing, but it typically can never use more than 2GB of RAM before it crashes, if I increase my RAM from 4-8GB, would that double how much RAM I can use for each individual process or actually cause no change in my performance? Also would increasing my VRAM and getting a better graphics card increase the extent to which individual programs can preform? Lastly, is there any way to upgrade a 86-bit processor to be able to run a 64-bit OS? I feel like it would be ridiculous to sell modern processors that are capped at 4GB of RAM? Thanks.   • Periodic Slowdowns During Games

    Hi, I am having trouble with my laptop. A problem that happens is a slowdown that occurs every 5 minutes or so (problem can be seen during games). The fan will start to speed up and the laptop will slow down to about 50% of its original fps. This will persist for about 30 seconds and then continue back.     I'm planning to build my own computer. I do not have enough cash to buy all components I need in one go. I want to ask, if I buy motherboard which is compatible with i7 processor (any) and compatible with graphic card Nvidia gtx 780, does it mean that this mother board will be compatible with processors (from intel) which will be released next year? Same for graphic cards? The point is that I'd like to avoid situation where I buy motherboard let's say now, and in couple of months there will be new graphic card/processor which will not be compatible with my mother board? Or maybe shall I start completely somewhere else?

    Hi, sorry if this is a very dumb question, but... I just got an offer from a dedicated hosting company, offering me a box with "2 Core 2 Quad processors @ 6GHz" I didn't know we could get 6GHz, and some googling turned out a bunch of people getting that, after overclocking like crazy, which seems to confirm my suspicion. Are there hostings offering 6GHz CPUs, or are these people outright lying to me? Thank you!

I was wondering if it is possible to connect it to my main pc as an extra processor(main pc is getting old, it's only single core processor) and if so how?   • Windows XP x64 virtual machine (VMWare ESX) using only 2 CPUs (out of 4)

    I just converted a physical Windows XP x64 machine with 4 CPUs to a VMWare virtual machine with 4CPUs (on a ESX server) using the VMWare Standalone Converter. Everything worked just great, except that the OS now seems to use only 2 CPUs (when 4 are installed, see the following image). This must be a Windows XP issue rather than a VMWare issue, but I can not really rule out any reason at this stage. What can I do?

This application has a large footprint for what it does (well most of the time does nothing).     I've looked up comparisons and found that single core performance seems to be better on i7 4770k, but has less cores that the i7 4930k. Would VS take advantage of extra cores when compiling, or would the difference be negible. I'm looking to buy the PC primarily for programming, so which would be better for visual studio? I already have the rest of my build ready, I just need to decide on this! :) thanks

  • Is the XP VMM a bottleneck on a multi core machine?

    I have a dual Xeon hex core machine running an IO intensive application. (WinXP 32) I am seeing a hardware driver (1/2 user mode, 1/2 kernel, streaming data) that is using 6k delta page faults per second. When other applications load or allocate large amounts of memory the driver's hardware buffer gets an underrun (application not feeding it fast enough). Could this be because the kernel is only using one core to service page fault interrupts?

    I am using Bash to install a customised version of JBoss, and one of the things I would like to do is install the correct version of the Apache Portable Runtime, which is a native binary. This script could be run on both 32 and 64 bit versions of RHEL. What are my options for identifying which version of the APR to install? I think we only have 32bit and x64-based systems here. I would still like to identify i64 systems so that the script can refuse to install on that type of machine. I am aware of using uname -m and grepping /proc/cpuinfo to find out, but was wondering which approach others would recommend?

  • IIS 7 SSO stops working during high CPU load? [migrated]

    On our IIS7 site (Windows 2008 Server), we have set up single sign-on (SSO). It seems to work fine most of the time, but when the CPU load becomes high, SSO authentication completely stops working. I did some research and tried this suggestion to increase the max number of worker processes in the default app pool, but the increase did not help. Some details: The site is a WordPress blog. The server has plenty of RAM (2 GB) and free disk space. SSO is achieved by putting a copy of the WordPress login page (wp-login.php) into a subfolder below the root that has anonymous authentication disabled, and then redirecting the browser to it. This was the recommendation of Microsoft given to our consultants. To increase CPU load for testing, I have three scripts hit the home page simultaneously, over and over. This drives CPU to 100%. When these scripts are running, SSO authentication simply doesn't happen. As soon as I stop the scripts, SSO works again. (I should mention that the SSO problem also happens when many users visit the site at once....) The WordPress database process (mysqld) is not stressed at all by the scripts. I would be happy to provide further diagnostics. Any help appreciated!

I found this link that states where the source code is but I cannot find it in my platform builder installation - I expect this is because it isn't the Windows Automotive platform. I wonder if there is any special CPU (x86/x64) instruction for string operation that is used by string library, that somehow used to optimize the parsing routine. for example instruction like finding a token in a string that could be run by hardware instead of looping each byte until a token is found.

  • How do I upgrade the BIOS to boot the motherboard when the CPU is not suported?

    So I have a Tyan S8225 motherboard with a Valencia (Opteron 4200) CPU. Two of us have tried everything. We have even swapped the whole motherboard, Power supply, memory, even a different CPU (still Valencia). We even tried it without any memory installed and with only a single CPU. There are no beep codes as I suspect even those are controlled by the BIOS boot process. We put the whole thing on the bench with just the power supply, VGA, keyboard and network (for IPMI) connected. The IPMI is not even showing the BIOS starting, but the IPMI is working. After some hunting around, I discovered the claim on the website is that the Valencia CPU's are not supported on older BIOS revisions. For a start, I don't know what the bios revision is and if it's older but it's the only thing left. Could the BIOS be causing a board not to boot at all? If that's the case, then is there any other way to update the BIOS without buying an old CPU only to be put back in a box just to update the BIOS? Yes, we even tried updating the BIOS through IPMI but you can't do that either.

    My coworkers and I share an 8-core server running Ubuntu for our batch processes. I tend to run 4 processes at a time, each of which consumes 100% CPU per core when nothing else is running. When a coworker runs his processes (typically about 4 at a time), his also get 100% per. However, when both of us run ours (he always goes first), his still get 100% and mine seem to divide the remaining processing power and linger in the 10-40% range. I even reniced his process to a lower value and it did not change. What are the issues that may cause this?
