    The motherboard on my PC (Dell XPS 410) has socket LGA 755 and according to the box on this processor I have, says it requires a motherboard with socket LGA 775. Will this processor work on the 755 motherboard? Edit: After reading further result online, I think I may have been fed some mis-information. According to this thread the XPS comes with socket LGA 755 but on other sites it says that it comes with LGA 775...

  • Standalone server setup for compute capacity

    I'm developing an application for my company that will require a lot of compute capacity (running some very big mathematical calculations), and looking for some form of server setup to do this. For various reasons, we want to run this on-site in our office rather than hosting it externally. It's been a while since I last had to set up my own servers so I thought I would tap into the collective wisdom of serverfault! My broad requirements are: Budget $30-50k, with an aim to get as much compute capacity as possible for that budget 64-bit servers suitable to run Ubuntu Linux + Java Some relatively standalone rack that can be installed in secure office space Fast/low latency network connections between the servers, but don't really care about connectivity to the outside world Storage capacity shared between the servers - they don't necessarily need their own storage providing they can be booted from a common image Downtime can be tolerated (since the calculations are run in batch mode) The software itself is fault-tolerant, so there is no need for extra resiliency in the server setup (cheap replaceable commodity parts will be fine in general) Given these requirements what kind of setup would you recommend and why?

  • Mouse Hang with voltage fluctuation

    I bought a new assembled PC about a month ago, but for the past 7 or 8 days I found my mouse cursor hangs every time there is a voltage fluctuation on my UPS (I guess it as when sound comes from ups then mouse hang for 2 or 3 sec. and them it goes normal again). My PC also seems to shut down while I'm working and it refuses to boot again - I end up needing to switch off my UPS and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. It will then boot as per normal. Could the trouble be with my PSU? Am I potentially damaging my computer by pressing and holding the power button? I have : Motheboard : intel Chipset Model - DH61WWAAG23116-303 Processor : Intel Core i3 3.20 Ghz RAM : Zion 4 gb DDR3 HDD : 1 tb GRAPHICS : 2 gb NVIDIA GeForce GT-610 CABINET : Frontech Rock OS : Win 7 32 Bit

  • why are CPUs so much more expensive in the UK than US?

    I'm looking at building my own PC. An Intel Core i7 960 3.2 Ghz is about £457 in the UK at various online retailers. In the US the price at newegg is $570 (this is about £380 at current exchange rates). 2 questions. 1) Why the difference (about 20%)? All I can think of is sales tax. 2) Am I right in assuming this is just a commodity part - if I ordered one from the US there is no reason it would be any different from one bought in the UK?

  • My computer makes weird sounds that you can only hear through a speaker

    I recently got a brand new computer. Everything was fine until I plugged my electric guitar into my amp. When I switch on my guitar amp (guitar speaker) I can hear a weird noise. It sounds like the noise that that goes through your speakers when you put your mobile phone next to it. There is nothing wrong with my guitar or guitar amp and I didn't have any similar problems with my old computer. Can anyone help me?

    We have a HP Pavilion DV3 4000SB that was given an error on startup that the fan was having problems (System Fan 90b error message) So I decided to open the laptop up and clean the fan, as that seemed the easiest option. Upon opening it up, at first I froze and thought "No wonder! The whole thing's burnt!", but then I started thinking it looked more like someone used a spraycan on it. I looked up a video on youtube of someone disassembling his Pavilion and noticed there wasn't any of the black on his, so my question here is: Have any of you encountered this, or know what it is? Or if it's something that could point to a problem?

  • If I double my ram on a x86 processor, does that double the ram I can use for each individual process?

    I don't understand how 32-Bit OS's use RAM on a per process basis. I've read the max RAM my x86 processor running a 32-bit OS can use is 2^32 = 4gb; but that's just for one process, right? 3DS Max keeps crashing, but it typically can never use more than 2GB of RAM before it crashes, if I increase my RAM from 4-8GB, would that double how much RAM I can use for each individual process or actually cause no change in my performance? Also would increasing my VRAM and getting a better graphics card increase the extent to which individual programs can preform? Lastly, is there any way to upgrade a 86-bit processor to be able to run a 64-bit OS? I feel like it would be ridiculous to sell modern processors that are capped at 4GB of RAM? Thanks.     Hi, I am having trouble with my laptop. A problem that happens is a slowdown that occurs every 5 minutes or so (problem can be seen during games). The fan will start to speed up and the laptop will slow down to about 50% of its original fps. This will persist for about 30 seconds and then continue back. I want to ask, if I buy motherboard which is compatible with i7 processor (any) and compatible with graphic card Nvidia gtx 780, does it mean that this mother board will be compatible with processors (from intel) which will be released next year? Same for graphic cards? The point is that I'd like to avoid situation where I buy motherboard let's say now, and in couple of months there will be new graphic card/processor which will not be compatible with my mother board? I just got an offer from a dedicated hosting company, offering me a box with "2 Core 2 Quad processors @ 6GHz" I didn't know we could get 6GHz, and some googling turned out a bunch of people getting that, after overclocking like crazy, which seems to confirm my suspicion. Are there hostings offering 6GHz CPUs, or are these people outright lying to me? Thank you!

  • Windows XP x64 virtual machine (VMWare ESX) using only 2 CPUs (out of 4)

    I just converted a physical Windows XP x64 machine with 4 CPUs to a VMWare virtual machine with 4CPUs (on a ESX server) using the VMWare Standalone Converter. Everything worked just great, except that the OS now seems to use only 2 CPUs (when 4 are installed, see the following image). This must be a Windows XP issue rather than a VMWare issue, but I can not really rule out any reason at this stage. What can I do?

    I've looked up comparisons and found that single core performance seems to be better on i7 4770k, but has less cores that the i7 4930k. Would VS take advantage of extra cores when compiling, or would the difference be negible. I'm looking to buy the PC primarily for programming, so which would be better for visual studio?   • Is the XP VMM a bottleneck on a multi core machine?

    I have a dual Xeon hex core machine running an IO intensive application. (WinXP 32) I am seeing a hardware driver (1/2 user mode, 1/2 kernel, streaming data) that is using 6k delta page faults per second. When other applications load or allocate large amounts of memory the driver's hardware buffer gets an underrun (application not feeding it fast enough). Could this be because the kernel is only using one core to service page fault interrupts?

    I am using Bash to install a customised version of JBoss, and one of the things I would like to do is install the correct version of the Apache Portable Runtime, which is a native binary. This script could be run on both 32 and 64 bit versions of RHEL. What are my options for identifying which version of the APR to install? I think we only have 32bit and x64-based systems here. I would still like to identify i64 systems so that the script can refuse to install on that type of machine. I am aware of using uname -m and grepping /proc/cpuinfo to find out, but was wondering which approach others would recommend?

  • IIS 7 SSO stops working during high CPU load? [migrated]

    On our IIS7 site (Windows 2008 Server), we have set up single sign-on (SSO). It seems to work fine most of the time, but when the CPU load becomes high, SSO authentication completely stops working. I did some research and tried this suggestion to increase the max number of worker processes in the default app pool, but the increase did not help. Some details: The site is a WordPress blog. The server has plenty of RAM (2 GB) and free disk space. SSO is achieved by putting a copy of the WordPress login page (wp-login.php) into a subfolder below the root that has anonymous authentication disabled, and then redirecting the browser to it. This was the recommendation of Microsoft given to our consultants. To increase CPU load for testing, I have three scripts hit the home page simultaneously, over and over. This drives CPU to 100%. When these scripts are running, SSO authentication simply doesn't happen. As soon as I stop the scripts, SSO works again. (I should mention that the SSO problem also happens when many users visit the site at once....) The WordPress database process (mysqld) is not stressed at all by the scripts. I would be happy to provide further diagnostics. Any help appreciated!
