• Stable ubuntu distribution for a broadcom bcm4313 wireless driver and an nvidia 630 graphics adapter

  I have been trying to completely shift to ubuntu or a linux distro for almost 2 years now. I have tried all the ubuntu distros starting from 10.04 through 11.10, but there has always been some bugs with the display drivers or the wireless cards not being recognised and the additional drivers suggested from the ubuntu community not doing the trick always. I tried a lot to fix bugs, checked a lot of forums, launch pad, got some of them fixed, but could not really get a neat and complete ubuntu machine set up till now. Now I really like the whole open source community and the linux platform, my pc at home runs ubuntu 11.04 perfectly but there have been some glitches always with ubuntu on my laptop that has forced me to stick with windows only. Now I am currently on an hp dv6 laptop that has the broadcom bcm4313 wireless driver and the nvidia 630gtm graphics(optimus) driver. Now I tried to do some research on the support of these drivers in linux machines but could not get anywhere. So I would really appreciate if you guys could suggest some linux distro that I could use that has full support of these drivers or has stable bug fixes for these kind of issues. I tried precise pangolin (LTS) through a live CD but i still see a problem with wifi networks which is a little frustrating. Please help me find the perfect match for my laptop :P I would gladly provide any other information necessary.

• Web2.0, AJAX, HTML5, Facebook, Social web, openid, Oauth, web browsers... where is all this going ?

  We have seen many new things appear in the last 7 or 5 five years on the web: Facebook, html5 appeared, new browsers grew strongly, Google failed with Wave... Since Facebook and other stuff like Gtalk and Gmail, I thought and hoped that forums, chat, mail, usenet, conversation rooms and p2p protocols could inter operate to allow the user to use all those services transparently. Of course I realized that things are far much complicated, for several reasons: the IETF cannot invent new things: they just propose standards. Microsoft as well as big players often are obstacles to relevant innovation regarding open formats. The biggest stories being document formats or internet explorer with its long reaction to support web standards. Smartphones, thanks to the appearances of OSes such as iOS and Android, are finally able to navigate on internet: former devices were deaf, they weren't directly connected to internet. The mail protocol were left unchanged even with the grow of spam and malwares. I don't know what to think, because I think there is still a lot to do, but I feel like it will never happen or that nobody seems interested in those basic text transmit features... So what do you think what are the next big steps in the evolution of the web ? Do you think is will still walk hand in hand with open source ?

• Not Happy With the Monochrome Visual Studio 11 Beta UI

  I can’t wait for a third-party to come out with tools to return some colour to the flat, monochrome look of Visual Studio 11 (beta). What bugs me most are the icons. I feel like a newbie when I have to squint and analyze the shape of icons on the debugging toolbar just to get the one I want. (Fortunately, the meddlers didn’t mess with the keyboard commands so I’m not totally lost.) Not sure what usability studies told MS that bland is better. Maybe it is for most people, but not for me.  Gray, shades of gray and black. Ugh. And don’t get me started on the stupidity of using all-caps for window titles. Who approved that? I see that there’s a UserVoice poll on the topic (http://visualstudio.uservoice.com/forums/121579-visual-studio/suggestions/2623017-add-some-color-to-visual-studio-11-beta) but I doubt that anything will change Microsoft’s opinion in time for the release. Once a product gets to a stable beta, most non-crashing stuff gets pushed to the next version. I hope I’m proved wrong. Fortunately, Visual Studio is quite customizable. Unless ‘Bland’ is hard-coded, some registry tweaks and a collection of replacement icons should allow dissenters like me back to productivity. BTW, other than hating the UI, VS 11 beta is working quite well for me on a .NET 4 project.Note: Although my username for the ASP.NET domain includes the letters "[MVP]", I'm no longer an MVP. Apparently it's nearly impossible to change a username in the system. My apologies for the misleading identifier but I tried to have it changed without success.

• Alert for Forms customers running Oracle Forms 10g

  Doesn’t time fly!  While you might have been happily running your Forms 10g applications for about 5 years or so now, the end of premier support is creeping up and you need to start planning for a move to Oracle Forms 11g. The premier support end date in December 31st 2011 and this is documented in Note: 1290974.1 available from MOS. So how much of an impact is this going to be?  Maybe not as much as you think.  While Forms 11g is based on WebLogic Server (WLS),10g was based  on OC4J.  That in itself doesn’t impact Forms much.  In most case it will simply be a recompile of your Forms source files and redeploy on WLS 11g. The Forms builder is the same in 11g as in 10g although its currently not available as a separate download from the main middleware bundle.  You can also look at a WLS Basic license option which means you shouldn’t have to shell out on upgrading to a WLS Suite license option. So what’s the proof in this being a relatively straightforward upgrade?  Well, we’ve had a big uptake of Forms 11g already (which has itself been out for over 2 years).  Read about BT Expedite’s upgrade where “The upgrade of Forms from Oracle Forms 10g to Oracle Forms 11g was relatively simple and on the whole, was just a recompilation”.  Or AMEC where “This has been one of the easiest Forms conversions we’ve ever done and it was a simple recompile in all cases” So if you are on 10g (or even earlier versions) I’d strongly consider starting your planning for an upgrade to 11g now.   This has been a burning question for me ever since and I think it's interesting enough to discuss it on the forums. As most will know, in websites we include anchor links, stylesheets, script files (javascript) and images. For anchor links we use the form <a href="..." /> For stylesheets we may use the form <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="..." /> For javascript we may use <script src="..." /> For images we use <img src="..." /> So, the question is this: How do we know that what is in the link pointer (i.e. replacing the ... in each example) is a local file or a foreign entity? To make it clear, lets say I create a local file named "ashish.com". Now, my purpose is to create a link so that anybody who clicks on it may download it. So, my code would be thus: <a href="ashish.com">Download It</a> But this makes it ambiguous. I could also be referring to a website named "ashish.com" So, how does the computer magically know which one I mean? Or does it even know this? What would happen in such a scenario?

• Apache Not Accepting a Path in My Home Folder

  I have trying to set up an Apache site to use a folder in my home folder without any success. I exactly followed the steps in this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ApacheMySQLPHP yet I did not succeed; I keep getting error 403, which says that the server doesn't have permission to access the requested page. I searched forums and many suggested changing the permission of the folder. I went straight away and set the permission to 777, but that didn't solve the problem. I made another search and somebody gave me a clue, which is that it could be because my home folder is encrypted. I believe this could be the problem, but: What is the relation between encryption and Apache? I suppose Apache server is requesting the file from the system, rather than trying to access the file bytes! Is there anyway to solve this problem? I don't want to move the folder to /var/www because I am using this Apache for testing, so I want whatever change I make to be immediately reflected, rather than having to copy files which is error prone.

• lucid 10.04 LTS => Precise 12.04.1 : upgrade doesn't work

  I googled and looked into all unkown issues on ubuntu forums but I can't figure out why a 10.04 LTS server won't detect the last LTS 12.04.1. I guess since 12.04 is a fresh dist, not much is reported for related issues Here is what I did : apt-get update apt-get upgrade apt-get install update-manager-core it was already installed so no update for this package. I checked : /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades [DEFAULT] # Default prompting behavior, valid options: # # never - Never check for a new release. # normal - Check to see if a new release is available. If more than one new # release is found, the release upgrader will attempt to upgrade to # the release that immediately succeeds the currently-running # release. # lts - Check to see if a new LTS release is available. Note that this option should not be # used if the currently-running release is not itself an LTS # release, since in that case the upgrader won't be able to # determine if a newer release is available. • Unable to Connect to Internet with 3G USB Dongle for Particular ISP

  I'm using USB 3G Dongle for Internet. Previously I was using Tata Docomo (India) as provider, and the Internet was working fine. Now I've changed to BSNL, but I'm unable to connect to the Internet on Ubuntu. However, I've checked access point settings and other configuration which are required for BSNL, and it is working fine with same Dongle on Windows 7. Also, I'm able to connect Internet with other providers on Ubuntu, but problem persists only with Ubuntu. The access point for BSNL in my region is bsnlnet. In fact I configure the Dongle with BSNL using default Network Configuration wizard that pops up when USB Dongle is attached. When Dongle is attached and configured with BSNL, I can see network strength in Messaging menu, in Mobile Broadband category, of Ubuntu (note: my network icon still shows "not connected" status). And when I try to use the connection that I've created, it fails to connect. So far, I tried using Sakis3g script that I came up with while wandering over this issue on other forums, it didn't worked either. I also made sure that there are no special configuration made for BSNL on my Windows 7 installation, and still it is working fine there, the problem is only with Ubuntu. How can I fix it?

I am starting to think about how the accompanying website will be hosted and would greatly appreciate some advice. Requirements: Domain #1 Information about the project itself (just pages and pictures). Documentation / Wiki Forums Download of project source (approx 3MB archive) Download of various themes and community contributed content (est. sizes 10KB ~ 512KB). Domain #2 Primary company website that offers products and services. This will be primarily pictures and pages. What kind of web hosting would be best for a project like this. I am working on a very tight budget and can only afford to spend up to £250 per year for hosting this. I was considering using some sort of VPS hosting. • Change from Bullet/OgreAnim to Havok?

  I have been working on a game in Ogre for the last 6 months or so. It started as a learning project, and after a few rewrites it actually turned into a real game project. Physics scared me, and using Bullet with its lack of documentation was a nightmare, but I was able to atleast get some basics added and learned a lot. So as of now I am using Ogre with its default animation system (fairly basic) and Bullet Physics. I had always wanted to use Havok when I started out, but due to lack of integration information on the Ogre forums, and lack of tutorials on the net, I decided against it. Now that I am actually at the point where Bullet is just too much of a headache to proceed with (staring at forum threads praying someone answers) and the Ogre animation system is so basic, I am considering switching to Havok for Physics and Animation. The Physics system looks extremely polished and easy to use. The animation system looks incredible with the retargeting/blending/etc. The documentation is incredibly detailed as well (I guess when you come from Bullet, any documentation looks amazing) So my question is, as I am still somewhat of a 'newbie' to game development, should I just stick with what I am using now or should I make the switch over to Havok? The physics looks like I could get my project back to where it is now with minimal effort, and be able to expand much faster. The animation aspect looks extremely daunting as far as integrating it with Ogre.

  I'm a software developer at a technology company. I have been tasked with leading the documentation effort for the product I work on. The goal is to produce documentation internal to developer, and the project spills over into the business side, where it covers requirements documentation. This project is challenging. Specifically, I'm dealing with a product which: - has been around for a long time, at least 6 years. - has no form of documentation other than some small, outdated pieces here and there. - has comments in the code, but they are technical and do not convey any over-arching behavior (even on technical side). - as a consequence of having little to no documentation, is often unnecessarily complex under the covers In addition, we have not been given a lot of time to work on this project. I do not have any formal documentation or writing background, training, or experience. I have displayed some ability in writing/communication around the office, which may be why I was assigned to this project. Please share your advice or recommendation for resources to help me prepare and deal with this project. I'm looking for references to books/website/forums/whatever, to help me come up with the design of a plan with milestones, learn about best practices, task delegation, templates, buy-in, etc. I'm hoping specifically for resources targeting or giving special mention of introducing good documentation to existing, undocumented, projects.   now I've been been searching for an answer to this question for at least 3 days now. I've tried on many cocos2d forums, including the official one and have heard nothing back. I've tried to do this but it fails to work. It uses a view controller which inherits like this: @interface OneFingerRotationGestureViewController : UIViewController <OneFingerRotationGestureRecognizerDelegate> Now my question is how would I implement the OneFingerRotationGesture behaviour onto a CCSprite in cocos2d 2.0? As interfaces in cocos2d look like this: @interface HelloWorldLayer : CCLayer Now I have asked a similar question to this on stack overflow and a user directed me to this link: https://github.com/krzysztofzablocki/CCNode-SFGestureRecognizers Which I believe makes use of gestures (like the first github linked project) but not custom gestures. • How do I transition from WUBI to a native installation?

  I have Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid installed through wubi on my laptop (it came with Windows 7 preinstalled). This was my first foray into Linux, and I'm here to stay. I have no use for Windows, and yet I must manually choose not to boot into it! Should I shrink the Windows partition to something negligible and grow the Linux one using something like gparted or fdisk, and just be content that everything runs? In that case, I need to understand the filesystems. Which is which? • How do I nstall MS Office 2010 via WINE?

  I am trying to install MS Office 2010 on Ubuntu 12.04 on my new MacBook Pro (15"). I already read and followed every existing threads on forums and followed every existing tutorial, but my problem seem unique so far, since whichever solution I try, the problem remains. When I launch PlayOnLinux, two boxes appear one after the other (before the latest upgrade of Ubuntu of last week, the second box did not appear, only the first one did); the first one tells me: Error: PlayOnLinux is unable to find 32-bits OpenGL libraries. You might encounter problem with your games." When I close this window, a second one pops up, stating: Error: PlayOnLinux cannot find 7z. You should install it to use PlayOnLinux. Of course, I tried purging PlayOnLinux (uninstalling it and re-installing it). I also tried other versions of PlayOnLinux. Nothing matters: the problem remains. I did not succeed so far to install 32-bits OpenGL libraries, since I have a Radeon graphics card (which seems to be unusual) and I just cannot find these libraries. Once the two "error" boxes are closed, PlayOnLinux is open, but does not seem to work properly; when I try to install Microsoft Office 2010, nothing happens. When I try to close PlayOnLinux, it is even worse: Unity seems unable to close it (I even had a frozen screen when trying to xkill it through the terminal). I am looking forward to any tips that could help. P.S.: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Whistler [AMD Radeon HD 6600M Series]

  My team and I are meeting tonight to come up with a business plan and some community input would be amazing. I've been mulling over this issue for the past few months and bouncing ideas off of others, and now I'd finally like some input from the community. I have come up with a fair selection of ideas, but most of those amount to either fun projects which could potentially be profitable, or otherwise solid business models that have one or two major hurdles (usually related to resources or legality). For our team meeting tonight, my idea is to take inventory of our available skills, resources, and compelling problems which interest us. The last is where I would greatly appreciate some community input. Hell, even entire business ideas/plans would be appreciated. No matter how big or small your thoughts, any input would be appreciated. We're a team of computer scientists, so our business will be primarily based around software/technology/Web solutions. Among my relevant available resources (entire Internet aside), I have the following: A pretty reliable connection to an SEO company a large production company. A stash of fairly powerful server hardware. A fast network with static IPs. The backend for Hackswipe, which includes credit card payment processing and a Google Voice-based SMS gateway. This work in progress design for something completely unrelated but which is backed by some fairly decent infrastructure. Direct access to the experts in just about any relevant field (on-campus Carnegie Mellon professors). A sexual relationship with the baron of a small nation. For further down the line, some investor relationships. Not likely to be so relevant, but a decent social media presence (Stack Overflow reputation, modship in some major reddits, various tech forums). The source code for Eugene fucking McCabe. Pooled with the other team members, the list of projects we can build off of would be longer (including an Android app). So, what are your thoughts? Crossposted to reddit

• Why do some programmers think there is a contrast between theory and practice?

  Comparing software engineering with civil engineering, I was surprised to observe a different way of thinking: any civil engineer knows that if you want to build a small hut in the garden you can just get the materials and go build it whereas if you want to build a 10-storey house you need to do quite some maths to be sure that it won't fall apart. In contrast, speaking with some programmers or reading blogs or forums I often find a wide-spread opinion that can be formulated more or less as follows: theory and formal methods are for mathematicians / scientists while programming is more about getting things done. What is normally implied here is that programming is something very practical and that even though formal methods, mathematics, algorithm theory, clean / coherent programming languages, etc, may be interesting topics, they are often not needed if all one wants is to get things done. According to my experience, I would say that while you do not need much theory to put together a 100-line script (the hut), in order to develop a complex application (the 10-storey building) you need a structured design, well-defined methods, a good programming language, good text books where you can look up algorithms, etc. So IMO (the right amount of) theory is one of the tools for getting things done. So my question is why do some programmers think that there is a contrast between theory (formal methods) and practice (getting things done)? Is software engineering (building software) perceived by many as easy compared to, say, civil engineering (building houses)? Or are these two disciplines really different (apart from mission-critical software, software failure is much more acceptable than building failure)?

• Where to find Hg/Git technical support?

  Posting this as a kind of a favour for a former coleague, so I don't know the exact circumstances, but I'll try to provide as much info as I can ... A friend from my old place of employment (maritime research institute; half government/commercial funding) has asked me if I could find out who provides technical support (commercial) for two major DVCS's of today - Git and Mercurial. They have been using VCS for years now (Subversion while I was there, don't know what they're using now - probably the same), and now they're renewing their software licences (they have to give a plan some time in advance for everything ... then it goes "through the system") and although they will be keeping Subversion as well, they would like to justify beginning of DVCS as an alternative system (most people root for Mercurial since it seems simpler; mostly engineers and physicians there who are not that interested in checking Git repos for corruption and the finer workings of Git, but I believe any one of the two could "pass") - but it has to have a price (can be zero; no problem there) and some sort of official technical support. It is a pro forma matter, but it has to be specified. Most of the people there are using one of the two already, but this has to be specified to be official. So, I'm asking you - do you know where could one go for Git or Mercurial technical support (can be commercial)? Technical forums and the like are out of the question. It has to work on the principle: - I have a problem. - I post a question with the details. - I get an answer in specified time. It can be "we cannot do that." but it has to be an official answer and given in agreed time. I'm sure by now most of you understand what I'm asking, but if not - post a comment or similar. Also, if you think of any reasons which could decide justification of introducing Git/Hg from an technical and administrative viewpoint, feel free to write them down also.

• Installation hangs at "Retrieving file 43 of 105" Virtualbox OS X 10.7 Host Ubuntu 12.04 x86 guest

  This is my second attempt at installing Ubuntu. In my first attempt, I selected "download updates" and "install third-party components"; in my second attempt, I deselected both. Still experiencing the same problem. In my first attempt at installing Ubuntu, after the installation stuck at "Retrieving file 43 of 105", I selected "skip" and the installation completed. After I started to run the OS, I received a notification that language support was incomplete. When I tried to update it, the Ubuntu Software Centre updating process hung on "waiting for jockey-backend to exit", seemingly indefinitely. At that point, I decided to reinstall the system (since the whole process is only supposed to take 45 minutes or less), but, as I mentioned above my results were the same. I'm new to Ubuntu. Any advice? Where are the files (including file 43) being retrieved from? Online or from the ubuntu installation iso? I have searched many forums for an answer to this problem, and have seen others with the same issue but I haven't found a solution. Thanks.
