• How to split up levels? (cocos2d,box2d,iphone) to save CPU and memory?

  Hi, so I'm going to create large levels. But there's a problem: There's much unseen space (it's a jump'n run like mario bros.) and this will use memory + cpu. so how could I split up my levels? I'm using Box2D+ cocos2d for iphone. Any ideas? Mayby just set the visible property to NO? But it would be still in the memory :(. But what with the box2d bodies? Destroy and recreate them would be to heavy for the FPS, because I have physics built in which should not be recreated. Should I make fix points where i want to split the level up, than if the player is 200 px away it should preload it. and if the player is 200 px away from the last part of the level I unload it. But there would be the problem with the physics, because on the start of the level it has a unique movement and later if i destroy and recreate it it would do the same. but i don't want that. other ideas?

• Best method to search hierarchical data

  I'm looking at building a facility which allows querying for data with hierarchical filtering. I have a few ideas how I'm going to go about it but was wondering if there are any recommendations or suggestions that might be more efficient. As an example imagine that a user is searching for a job. The job areas would be as follows. 1: Scotland 2: --- West Central 3: ------ Glasgow 4: ------ Etc 5: --- North East 6: ------ Ayrshire 7: ------ Etc A user can search specific (i.e. Glasgow) or in a larger area (i.e. Scotland). The two approaches I am considering are: keep a note of children in the database for each record (i.e. cat 1 would have 2, 3, 4 in its children field) and query against that record with a SELECT * FROM Jobs WHERE Category IN Areas.childrenField. Use a recursive function to find all results who have a relation to the selected area. The problems I see from both are: Holding this data in the db will mean having to keep track of all changes to structure. Recursion is slow and inefficent. Any ideas, suggestion or recommendations on the best approach? I'm using C# ASP.NET with MSSQL 2005 DB.

• TCP Socket.Connect is generating false positives

  I'm experiencing really weird behavior with the Socket.Connect method in C#. I am attempting a TCP Socket.Connect to a valid IP but closed port and the method is continuing as if I have successfully connected. When I packet sniffed what was going on I saw that the app was receiving RST packets from the remote machine. Yet from the tracing that is in place it is clear that the connect method is not throwing an exception. Any ideas what might be causing this? The code that is running is basically this IPEndPoint iep = new IPEndPoint(System.Net.IPAddress.Parse(m_ipAddress), m_port); Socket tcpSocket = new Socket(AddressFamily.InterNetwork, SocketType.Stream, ProtocolType.Tcp); tcpSocket.Connect(iep); To add to the mystery... when running this code in a stand alone console application, the result is as expected – the connect method throws an exception. However, when running it in the Windows Service deployment we have the connect method does not throw an exception. Edit in response to Mystere Man's answer How would the exception be swallowed? I have a Trace.WriteLine right above the .Connect method and a Trace.WriteLine right under it (not shown in the code sample for readability). I know that both traces are running. I also have a try catch around the whole thing which also does a Trace.Writeline and I don't see that in the log files anywhere. I have also enabled the internal socket tracing as you suggested. I don't see any exceptions. I see what appears to be successful connections. I am trying to identify differences between the windows service app and the diagnostic console app I made. • Need Help finding an appropriate task assignment algorithm for a college project involving coordinat

  I am a long time lurker here and have found over time many answers regarding jquery and web development topics so I decided to ask a question of my own. This time I have to create a c++ project for college which should help manage the workflow of a company providing all kinds of services through in the field teams. The ideas I have so far are: client-server application; the server is a dispatcher where all the orders from clients get and the clients are mobile devices (PDAs) each team in the field having one a order from a client is a task. Each task is made up of a series of subtasks. You have a database with estimations on how long a task should take to complete you also know what tasks or subtasks each team on the field can perform based on what kind of specialists made up the team (not going to complicate the problem by adding needed materials, it is considered that if a member of a team can perform a subtask he has the stuff needed) Now knowing these factors, what would a good task assignment algorithm be? The criteria is: how many tasks can a team do, how many tasks they have in the queue, it could also be location, how far away are they from the place but I don't think I can implement that.. It needs to be efficient and also to adapt quickly is the human dispatcher manually assigns a task. Any help or leads would be really appreciated. Also I'm not 100% sure in the idea so if you have another way you would go about creating such an application please share, even if it just a quick outline. I have to write a theoretical part too so even if the ideas are far more complex that what i outlined that would be ok ; I'd write those and implement what I can. Edit: C++ is the only language I know unfortunately.

• Drupal view filter to show only one of a certain item

  I'm fairly new to Drupal, and am using Node Import to take a TSV file and turn it into nodes. I'm hitting a problem, though, with automating updates to the nodes. Again, I'd like to take a Tab Separated Values text file, and load it into my site via Node Import (or whatever else anyone might suggest) and then only show updated Nodes. Here's a specific example: I have a Node with the following info: StoreId Name Address Phone Contact 01 Name1 Address1 Phone1 Contact1 02 Name2 Address2 Phone2 Contact2 etc. The info pulls into the nodes just fine (Thank you Node Import!), but we also want to process updates to the nodes. So far I have two ideas... figure out how to delete duplicate (previous) instances of the same StoreID, or just save the node with the duplicate StoreID (and new other info) and just display the most current version. In Views, I can get it to show the nodes and everything, but I can't figure out how to only display the most recent version of each StoreID. A view of views would work, but I can't seem to get that to work, either. Any ideas or other approaches I could take? Thanks in advance for the help!

  I am doing experiments with different operational amplifier circuits and I need to plot my measured results onto a graph. I have two data sets: freq1 = [.1 .2 .5 .7 1 3 4 6 10 20 35 45 60 75 90 100]; %kHz Vo1 = [1.2 1.6 1.2 2 2 2.4 14.8 20.4 26.4 30.4 53.6 68.8 90 114 140 152]; %mV V1 = 19.6; Acm = Vo1/(1000*V1); And: freq2 = [.1 .5 1 30 60 70 85 100]; %kHz Vo1 = [3.96 3.96 3.96 3.84 3.86 3.88 3.88 3.88]; %V V1 = .96; Ad = Vo1/(2*V1); (I would show my plots but apparently I need more reps for that) I need to plot the equation, CMRR vs freq: CMRR = 20*log10(abs(Ad/Acm)); The size of Ad and Acm are different and the frequency points do not match up, but the boundaries of both of these is the same, 100Hz to 100kHz (x-axis). On the line of CMRR, Matlab says that Ad and Acm matrix dimensions do not agree. How I think I would solve this is using freq1 as the x-axis for CMRR and then taking approximated points from Ad according to the value on freq1. Or I could do function approximations of Ad and Acm and then do the divide operator on those. I do not know how I would code up this two ideas. Any other ideas would helpful, especially simpler ones.   Hi All, Ideal situation/setup: A page containing 1 Flash movie and a separate div containing a few hyperlinks. These hyperlinks each have a unique class name like so: Copy code <ul> <li><a href="" class="randomname1"></a></li> <li><a href="" class="randomname2"></a></li> <li><a href="" class="randomname3"></a></li> <li><a href="" class="randomname4"></a></li> </ul> The Flash movie itself will contain 4 buttons. Clicking on one of these buttons should make the Flash communicate with Jquery/JS and tell it to highlight the specific classname. Ideas so far For the javascript, it would look like $(function() { function setClass(className) {$("."+className).css("background","red");} }); And in specific keyframes within Flash 1. button 1 ExternalInterface.call("setClass","randomname1"); 1. button 2 ExternalInterface.call("setClass","randomname2"); 1. button 3 ExternalInterface.call("setClass","randomname3"); 1. button 4 ExternalInterface.call("setClass","randomname4"); The problem is that it is not really working well and i am not sure if i am making Flash communicate with JS properly. • Resharper 5: How do I set the default formatting style for inline code blocks?

  I've got a problem with the formatting of inline code blocks within the VS2010 text editor and wonder if anyone else has had similar problems and found the 'magic' setting I'm looking for. I'm working my way through tutorials in an MVC book. Whenever I add some inline code blocks to a view I want them formatted like so: <% foreach (var link in Model) { %> <a href="<%=Url.RouteUrl(link.RouteValues)%>"> <%=link.Text%> </a> <% } %> What I'm actually getting is this (auto-formatted by the IDE when I finish writing the code): <% foreach (var link in Model) { %> <a href="<%=Url.RouteUrl(link.RouteValues)%>"> <%=link.Text%> </a> <% } %> It's pretty irritating. Any ideas on how I can instruct the IDE to leave my <% % tags alone? I've been fiddling with options under "Tools - Options - Text Editor" for ages but alas am getting nowhere... Edit: I've just noticed that this is down to Resharper 5 (when I disable it the problem disappears), however I still don't know how to stop it. Any ideas?

Fast? only point where I to some extent agree but cannot understand the same upper limits n for each for-loops -- perhaps he supposed it circular why does the code take O(mlog(n)) to proceed in time as finite structure? The term finite may be wrong, explicit?

• drawRect gets called on UIView subclass but not on UIViewController

  My code is working so far but I had to create a Class for the UIView. This is a bit inconvenient because I need to interact with the ViewController too. BTW, I did try [self setNeedsDisplay] on the ViewDidLoad of the UIViewController subclass file but it didn't work. Here's the code, which works on UIView Subclass but doesn't get called on a UIViewController one: - (void)drawRect:(CGRect)rect { UIColor *currentColor = [UIColor redColor]; CGContextRef context = UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext(); someNum = 1; CGContextBeginPath(context); CGContextMoveToPoint(context, 30, 40); [self addDotImageX:30 andY:40]; CGContextSetLineWidth(context, 2); CGContextSetStrokeColorWithColor(context, currentColor.CGColor); CGContextStrokePath(context); } Any ideas on what to try? BTW, this is a TabBar App. I know those can somehow block the calls to drawRect. The Tabs where created programatically, not through a Nib. Eg: NSMutableArray *listOfViewControllers = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; UIViewController *vc; vc = [[Education alloc] init]; vc.title = @"Education"; [listOfViewControllers addObject:vc]; vc.tabBarItem.image = [UIImage imageNamed:@"info.png"]; [vc release]; I would appreciate any ideas.   I was thinking of writing a function to normalize some data. A simple approach is def normalize(l, aggregate=sum, norm_by=operator.truediv): aggregated=aggregate(l) for i in range(len(l)): l[i]=norm_by(l[i], aggregated) l=[1,2,3,4] normalize(l) l -> [0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4] However for nested lists and dicts where I want to normalize over an inner index this doesnt work. I mean I'd like to get l=[[1,100],[2,100],[3,100],[4,100]] normalize(l, ?? ) l -> [[0.1,100],[0.2,100],[0.3,100],[0.4,100]] Any ideas how I could implement such a normalize function? Maybe it would be crazy cool to write normalize(l[...][0]) Is it possible to make this work?? Or any other ideas? Also not only lists but also dict could be nested. Hmm... EDIT: I just found out that numpy offers such a syntax (for lists however). Anyone know how I would implement the ellipsis trick myself?

  I'm implementing a interpreter-like project for which I need a strange little scheduling queue. Since I'd like to try and avoid wheel-reinvention I was hoping someone could give me references to a similar structure or existing work. I know I can simply instantiate multiple queues as I go along, I'm just looking for some perspective by other people who might have better ideas than me ;) I envision that it might work something like this: The structure is a tree with a single root. You get a kind of "insert_iterator" to the root and then push elements onto it (e.g. a and b in the example below). However, at any point you can also split the iterator into multiple iterators, effectively creating branches. The branches cannot merge into a single queue again, but you can start popping elements from the front of the queue (again, using a kind of "visitor_iterator") until empty branches can be discarded (at your discretion). x -> y -> z a -> b -> { g -> h -> i -> j } f -> b Any ideas? Seems like a relatively simple structure to implement myself using a pool of circular buffers but I'm following the "think first, code later" strategy :) Thanks

• PHP preg_match: a pattern which satisfies all MySQL field names (including 'table.field' formations)

  i need a pattern which satisfies mysql field names, but also with the option of having a table name before it examples: mytable.myfield myfield my4732894__7289FiEld here's what i tried: $pattern = "/^[a-zA-Z0-9_]*?[\.[a-zA-Z0-9_]]?$/"; this worked for what i needed before, which was just the field name: $pattern = "/^[a-zA-Z0-9_]*$/"; any ideas why my addition isnt working? maybe i'm making up regex, so i'll explain what i added... the first '?' is to say that it isn't greedy, ie. it will stop if the next part, namely "[.[a-zA-Z0-9_]]?" is satisfied. now, that second part is just the same as the first except it is optional (hence the '?' at the end) and it starts with a period (hence the '[.' and ']' wrapping my old clause. and obviously, the "^" and "$" rep the beginning and end of the string so... any ideas? (also, i'm a tad confused as to why i need to put in those "/"s in the begining/end anyways, so if you could tell me why it's required, that'd be awesome) thanks a lot! (and thanks for reading this all if you actually did... it's quite a ramble)

• MySql ODBC connection in VB6 on WinXP VERY slow. Other machines on same network are fast.

  Hi All, I have a VB6 application that has been performing very well. Recently, we upgraded our server to a Windows 2003 server. Migration of the databases and shares went well and we experienced no problems. Except one. And it has happened at multiple sites. I use the MySQL ODBC 5.1 connector to point to my MySQL database. On identical machines (as far as I can tell, they are client machines not ours), access to the DB is lightning fast on all but one computer. They use the same software and have the same connection strings. And I'm sure it's not the program, but the ODBC connection. When I press the 'Test Connection' button in the ODBC connection string window, it can take up to 10 seconds on the poorly performing machine to respond with a success. All the other computers are instantaneous. I have tried using ip address versus the machine name in the UDL, no change. I enabled option 256, which sped it up initially, but it's slow again. Most of the time on a restart the program will be fast for an hour or so then go slow again with the option 256 enabled. Frankly, I am out of ideas and willing to entertain any and all ideas or suggestions. This is getting pretty frustrating. Anyone ever experience anything like this?

• Importing external .jar file to Android project

  I've read various answers to similar questions on StackOverflow, so I apologise if I'm repeating another question, but I can't seem to get this to work. I have a standard java project in which I've written code to parse some BBC Radio XML data from the internet. The project is called BBCSchedules and the class I'm interested in is called BBCChannel. I'm now trying to use the BBCChannel class in an android application. How should I go about doing this? I've tried various things, following various bits of advice on the internet, and the place I've got to at the moment is compiling my BBCSchedules project to a .jar file, and importing that to the Android project using the Build Path/Library/Add External Jar option. However, Eclispe still doesn't recognise the BBCChannel class, and won't let me run the application because of this. I guess I've done something silly wrong, but what is it? Cheers, Robin UPDATE: I've tried the steps listed in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1334802/how-can-i-use-external-jars-in-an-android-project and various other StackOverflow questions I can find that seem to be related to this, but absolutely nothing seems to work. Any other ideas? UPDATE: The discussions I've had with the author of the first answer below suggest that it is something to do with how I am using Eclipse to attach the .jar file. The project he sent me with the .jar file already attached didn't work. Any other ideas anyone?

• Java side scrolling game on android

  I'm trying to make an easy side scrolling game just to learn the ropes of game programming on android. I came up with a solution of how to make it but I don't really think it is the most elegant solution. I wanted to get some different ideas on how to implement my game, as I really have no other solution right now. Here is a quick explanation of how it works.. I basically have blocks or objects fall from the top of the screen. The blocks are defined from a pre-defined string I create using a custom 'map-editor'. I create all the blocks at compile time, position them on or off the screen and simply increment their coordinates with each iteration of the gameloop. It is actually done a little bit better then that, but that gives a short easy explanation on the basic idea. I heard from a few people that instead of incrementing each block position, have the blocks stay there and simply change the viewable area. That makes sense, but I have no idea how to do it. Can anyone share some ideas or links on how I can implement something like this? I know my current solution isn't the greatest. Thanks!

  We have created a VSTO addin for Outlook Meetings. As part of this we trap on the SendEvent of the message on the FormRegionShowing event: _apptEvents.Send += new Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.ItemEvents_SendEventHandler(_apptEvents_Send); The method _apptEvents_Send then tests on a couple of properties and exits where appropriate. private void _apptEvents_Send(ref bool Cancel) { if (!_Qualified) { MessageBox.Show("Meeting has not been qualified", "Not Qualified Meeting", MessageBoxButtons.OK, MessageBoxIcon.Information); chkQualified.Focus(); Cancel = true; } } The problem that we're having is that some users' messages get sent twice. Once when the meeting is sent and a second time when the user re-opens outlook. I've looked for memory leaks, thinking that something might not be getting disposed of properly, and have added explicit object disposal on all finally calls to try and make sure resources are managed, but still getting the functionality incosistently across the organization. i.e. I never encountered the problem during development, nor other developers during testing. All users are up to date on framework (3.5 SP1) and Hotfixes for Outlook. Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this? Any ideas anyone might have would be greatly appreciated.

• How do I determine whether calculation was completed, or detect interrupted calculation?

  I have a rather large workbook that takes a really long time to calculate. It used to be quite a challenge to get it to calculate all the way, since Excel is so eager to silently abort calculation if you so much as look at it. To help alleviate the problem, I created some VBA code to initiate the the calculation, which is initiated by a form, and the result is that it is not quite as easy to interrupt the calculation process, but it is still possible. (I can easily do this by clicking the close X on the form, but I imagine there are other ways) Rather than taking more steps to try and make it harder to interrupt calculation, I'd like to have the code detect whether calculation is complete, so it can notify the user rather than just blindly forging on into the rest of the steps in my code. So far, I can't find any way to do that. I've seen references to Application.CalculationState, but the value is xlDone after I interrupt calculation, even if I interrupt the calculation after a few seconds (it normally takes around an hour). I can't think of a way to do this by checking the value of cells, since I don't know which one is calculated last. I see that there is a way to mark cells as "dirty" but I haven't been able to find a way to check the dirtiness of a cell. And I don't know if that's even the right path to take, since I'd likely have to check every cell in every sheet. The act of interrupting calculation does not raise an error, so my ON ERROR doesn't get triggered. Is there anything I'm missing? Any ideas? Any ideas?

  I am attempting to make an AJAX call to a very small PHP script that should return me an array that could be echo'd and decoded using JQuery. Here is what I have: My PHP page called to by AJAX: $web_q=mysql_query("select * from sec_u_g where uid='$id' "); $rs = array(); while($rs[] = mysql_fetch_assoc($web_q)) { } print_r(json_encode($rs)); This outputs: [{"id":"3","uid":"39","gid":"16"},{"id":"4","uid":"39","gid":"4"},{"id":"5","uid":"39","gid":"5"},{"id":"6","uid":"39","gid":"6"},{"id":"7","uid":"39","gid":"7"},{"id":"8","uid":"39","gid":"8"},{"id":"9","uid":"39","gid":"9"},false] I don't understand the "false" at the end for one .. But then I send to to JQuery and use: $.each(json.result, function(i, object) { $.each(object, function(property, value) { alert(property + "=" + value); }); }); This just fails. I try to alert "result" by itself which is set by: $.post("get_ug.php",{id:txt},function(result){ }); My output alerts are as follows: 1) The key is '0' and the value is '[' 2) The key is '1' and the value is 'f' 3) The key is '2' and the value is 'a' 4) The key is '3' and the value is 'l' 5) The key is '4' and the value is 's' 6) The key is '5' and the value is 'e' 7) The key is '6' and the value is ']' 8) The key is '7' and the value is ' ' (<-- Yes the line break is there in the alert) I am exhausted from trying different ideas and scripts. • Creating a network adapter - how hard is it?

  I'm interested in building a little (commercial) device on top of Arduino. I want it to be able to interface with network. Network as in standard Ethernet, Cat5, RJ-45, etc. I know that there is an Ethernet Shield, but it costs even more than the Arduino itself, and it's pretty big. Naturally, I want my device to be as small and as cheap as possible. So I'm thinking about recreating an Ethernet module myself. The problem is - I haven't got any experience with Ethernet, nor do I have a good idea where to start looking. Thus I can't even say if my ideas are feasible. Ultimately I would like the device to have three ports - one for incoming signal, two for outgoing, so the device is essentially a little switch where it is plugged in itself as well. The switching capabilities need not be very fast - the volume of data will be low. 10Mbit is more than enough, can be even slower. If that is not possible, a single port for controlling the device itself will also do. Another possibility I'm considering is power line communications - sending information through power lines. That's another area I've no experience with. What hardware should I be looking at, and where can I find information about the necessary software? So - can anyone tell me if these ideas are feasible, and if yes - where should I start looking?

Can you give me some syntax examples relating to my question which can be accomplished in your language of choice which consider useful. In particular, if you have some ideas about how to translate the above code segments, I would be happy to hear them. • Write to the second line of a PHP file

  I have a php file that I want to add an include path to on the second line. I need to open the file and inset a line of code on line 2. I have tried a few techniques none of which are working but I think it has something to do with the text I am trying to write and possibly not escaping character correctly as I am not too familiar with file writing. So here is the file I want to write to: $file = $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].'/'.$domaindir.'/test.php'; Here is the piece of text I want to insert into the file: $dbfile = "include('".$_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']."/".$domaindir."/web_".$dbname.".inc.php');"; Then what I was doing was a string replace but all it did was bump the "session_start();" bit to a newline! Can anyone point me in the direction of a tutorial that might tell me how to insert this into the second line of my php file or indeed if anyone has any ideas? I can say for sure that the path to the PHP file is fully tested so i know its not that the file is not being open or written to. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• C# Timer -- measuring time slower

  I'm writing a code where: I.) The user adds "events" during run-time. (To a flowlayoutpanel) These events are turning some LEDs on/off, after "x" time has elapsed and the LED-turning functions are written in a Led-function.cs class. i.e: 1) Turn left led on After 3500ms 2) Turn right led on After 4000ms II.) When the user hits start a timer starts. // Create timer. System.Timers.Timer _timer; _timer = new System.Timers.Timer(); _timer.Interval = (1); _timer.Elapsed += (sender, e) => { HandleTimerElapsed(LedObject, device, _timer); }; _timer.Start(); III.) The timer's tick event is raised every millisecond and checks if the user definied time has ellapsed. Im measuring the elapsed time with adding +1 to an integer at every tick event. (NumberOfTicks++;) //Timer Handle private void HandleTimerElapsed(Led_Functions LedObject, string device, System.Timers.Timer _timer) { NumberOfTicks++; if (NumberOfTicks >= Start_time[0]) { LedObject.LeftLED_ONnobutton(device); } } IV.) What I noticed was that when the tick was set to 1. (So the tick event is raised every millisecond) Even if I set 3000ms to the evet the LED actually flashed around 6 seconds. When the tick was set to 100. (So every 0,1s) then the flash was more accurate (3,5sec or so). Any Ideas why im having this delay in time? Or do you have any ideas how could I implement it better? • Creating a floating button

  Hey all, I'm working on a Firefox extension and am out of ideas on how to implement a floating button. I need a button that is overlayed on my page that I can show/hide and dynamically position just about anywhere on my page. I thought I could do something like a fancy CSS tool-tip except replace it with button functionality, but that idea failed because I couldn't pull my example apart well enough to understand what all I need to include, need to change, etc. I've thought about using jQuery(though wouldn't mind avoiding, unless it makes this painfully easy) but will be looking more into that as a possibility now. If anyone can offer a tutorial link, ideas, sample code, anything to help get me moving in the right direction I will greatly appreciate it! Thanks! Edit: Clarification I'm not entirely sure how to actually create the overlayed button. I tried to create a a floating div with some text in it, and nothing showed up, but I got no errors, which means I'm doing something wrong, but I have no idea what that is. http://www.fijiwebdesign.com/blog/css-tooltips-floating-html-elements.html If you take a look at that webpage you see that there is that floating "feedback" button, I would like to create something similar, only it wouldn't be anchored to the sides, but I could position it over text, etc. #floatingBtn { position: absolute; z-index: 10000; top: 50%; left: 50%; } Thats the CSS I used to try and float my div. I don't know if I'm creating the div in the wrong place or... I thought if I could get a floating div with some text, I could turn that into my button.
