• Forbidding or controlling "Hidden IT..." Who should write and maintain ad-hoc software applications?

  Bigger companies usually have the problem, that it is not possible to write all programs employees want (to save time and to optimize processes) due to a lack of staff and money. Then hidden programs will be created by some people having (at least some) coding experience (or by cheap students/interns...). Under some circumstances these applications will raise in importance and spread from one user to a whole department. Then there is the critical point: Who will maintain the application, add new features, ...? And this app is critical. It IS needed. But the intern has left the company. No one knows how it works. You only have a bunch of sources and some sort of documentation. Does it make sense to try and control or forbid application development done ad-hoc outside of the IT department (with the exception of minor stuff like Excel macros)?

'nuff said... oh yeah, thanks for the shoutout! John Papa Thanks for being a good friend, ramroding the Firestarter, being a great guy to be around, and for the poster... holy crap is that cool. Tim Heuer Thanks for all you did as a great DE in Phoenix, and for helping out so many of us, of course being a great guy, and for the poster as well... I think you and John shared that task. Consequently the Firestarter exploded from a laid-back event to a global conference. People worked their ass off getting bits ready and presentations using those bits. All to stem the flow of misinformation. All involved please accept my personal thanks for an absolutely awesome job. I had the priviledge of watching the 'prep' on Wednesday afternoon, and was blown away the first time I saw the 3D demo... and have been blown away every time I've seen it since. Not to mention all the other goodness in Silverlight 5. Yes I hit 1000 on my blog, but more importantly, all of you are blogging and using Silverlight, and Microsoft hit one completely out of the park... no... they knocked it out of the neighborhood with the Firestarter. It was amazing to be there for it, and it will be awesome to use the new bits as we get them. Keep reading, there's tons more to come with Silverlight and SilverlightCream following along behind. • surviveFocusChange=true

  Here's a very cool thing that I keep forgetting about but that Jesse reminded me of in the recent blog entries on Undo/Redo: "surviveFocusChange=true". Look at the screenshot below. You see two windows with a toolbar button. The toolbar button is enabled whenever an object named "Bla" is in the Lookup. The "Demo" window has a "Bla" object in its Lookup and hence the toolbar button is enabled when the focus is in the "Demo" window, as shown below: Now the focus is in the "Output" window, which does not have a "Bla" object in its Lookup and hence the button is disabled: However, there are scenarios where you might like the button to remain enabled even when the focus changes. (One such scenario is the Undo/Redo scenario in this blog a few days ago, i.e., even when the Properties window has the focus the Undo/Redo buttons should be enabled.) Here you can see that the button is enabled even though the focus has switched to the "Output" window: How to achieve this? Well, you need to register your Action to have "surviveFocusChange" set to "true". Hence, the same "Bla" object will remain available when switching from one window to another, until a new "Bla" object will be made available in the Lookup.

  What are your opinions and expectations on Google's Unladen Swallow? From their project plan: We want to make Python faster, but we also want to make it easy for large, well-established applications to switch to Unladen Swallow. Produce a version of Python at least 5x faster than CPython. Python application performance should be stable. Maintain source-level compatibility with CPython applications. Maintain source-level compatibility with CPython extension modules. We do not want to maintain a Python implementation forever; we view our work as a branch, not a fork. And even sweeter: In addition, we intend to remove the GIL and fix the state of multithreading in Python. I have created OData services before, but normally with a datacontext and IQueryable as Properties/Getters. What I want is to create the service by passing in IEnumerable, into the constructor IEnumerable<IQueryable>> queryableObjects; var dataService = new DataService(queryableObjects); Is this at all possible?

  I have an ArrayAdapter wrapped around an ArrayList of custom objects. I'd like to write a custom filter for that adapter so that when I call getListAdapter().getFilter().filter("abc") the list will get filtered by an arbitrary transformation of "abc". I thought I would just try to override ArrayAdapter.getFilter(), but that requires I re-implement the private ArrayAdapter.ArrayFilter which requires access to a bunch of ArrayAdapter's private instances. What's the simplest way to do this?

  After converting my data access layer project from EntityFramework v1 to v4 a got a bunch of errors for each of the entity classes: Error 10016: Error resolving item 'EntityTypeShape'. The exception message is: 'Unresolved reference 'NS.EntityName1'.'. DataAccessLayer\Model.edmx and Error 10016: Error resolving item 'AssociationConnector'. The exception message is: 'NS.EntityName1'.'. DataAccessLayer\Model.edmx Does anybody know what is this and how to fix it?

• Conceptually how does load-balancing on the EJB tier work in Glassfish/any ejb container

  I am wondering conceptually how load-balancing works on the EJB-level (not web session replication) with Java EE containers like Glassfish. From what I have gleaned your remote interface is a proxy that delegates your call to one of many servers you may have in an environment. If things fail are they supposed to be able to "finish" on another server? I want to understand the basic theory behind this load balancing, why is it better than a bunch of servers all running a plain web application with session affinity on a load-balancer?

• Where to change data for a "list" datasource in dashcode?

  I created a new project in dashcode and it automatically generated a mobile web app for me with a list and sample datasources. I see two datasources, one is labeled as "datasource" and the other is "list". However I can see that the actual data in datasources is in a js file, everything is good but where is the actual data stored for "list"? The sample application came with a bunch of data for "list" and I am unable to change it. Any ideas?

  Hello, I want to dismiss a FormSheetPresentation modal view controller when the user taps outside the modal view...I have seen a bunch of apps doing this (ebay on ipad for example) but i cant figure out how since the underneath views are disabled from touches when modal views are displayed like this (are they presenting it as a popover perhaps?)...anyone have any suggestions? • iPhone SDK Zoom and refresh PDF with Quartz

  Looking at the QuartzDemo sample application, I love the speed of the PDF rending using quartz alone (that is, without using uiwebview). However, when I'm zooming in the PDF it doesn't seem to become more clear like it does in PDF view. Is there something that I can change to have the same effect when zooming in and out using multitouch? like manipulate the PDF transformation matrix or something? Thanks a bunch. --Ben

• Memory management for NSURLConnection

  Sorry if this has been asked before, but I'm wondering what the best memory management practice is for NSURLConnection. Apple's sample code uses -[NSURLConnection initWithRequest:delegate:] in one method and then releases in connection:didFailWithError: or connectionDidFinishLoading:, but this spits out a bunch of analyzer warnings and seems sort of dangerous (what if neither of those methods is called?). I've been autoreleasing (using +[NSURLConnection connectionWithRequest:delegate:]), which seems cleaner, but I'm wondering--in this case, is it at ever possible for the NSURLConnection to be released before the connection has closed?

• Custom UIView built with Interface Builder accessible/positionable via Interface Builder

I want to be able to position this custom uiview on another UIView using the interface builder.
