• Commenting practices?

  Hey Everyone, As a student in computer engineering I have been pressured to type up very detailed comments for everything I do. I can see this being very useful for group projects or in the work place but when you work on your own projects do you spend as much time commenting? As a personal project I am working on grows more and more complicated I sometimes feel as though I should be commenting more but I also feel as though it's a waste of time since I will probably be the only one working on it. Is it worth the time and cluttered code? Thoughts?

• Need to determine if ELMAH is logging an unhandled exception or one raised by ErrorSignal.Raise()

  I am using the Elmah Logged event in my Global.asax file to transfer users to a feedback form when an unhandled exception occurs. Sometimes I log other handled exceptions. For example: ErrorSignal.FromCurrentContext().Raise(new System.ApplicationException("Program code not found: " + Student.MostRecentApplication.ProgramCode)); // more code that should execute after logging this exception The problem I am having is that the Logged event gets fired for both unhandled and these handled, raised exceptions. Is there a way to determine, in the Logged event handler, whether the exception was raised via ErrorSignal class or was simply unhandled? Are there other Elmah events that I can take advantage of?

• Multiple Forms on the Same Page with Rails

  So I'm building a rails app for high school students and I've hit a problem when it comes to creating users. I want the students to only be able to create accounts if they select their school and type in their school's password correctly. What is the correct / easiest way of doing this? Should I create a gatekeeper to the user#new action that they have to pass first or if their a way that on the same page a student can submit to forms. One would be the regular username, email, password using: form_for @user do ... end But then creating another form for the high-school / high-school password selection. Ideally the controller would be able to get the params of the high-school form, validate those, then go on to create the user from the user params. Is this possible using rails? My setup: Rails 3 and Ruby 1.9.2dev Thank you!

• Multiple key/value pairs in HTTP POST where key is the same name

  I'm working on an API that accepts data from remote clients, some of which where the key in an HTTP POST almost functions as an array. In english what this means is say I have a resource on my server called "class". A class in this sense, is the type a student sits in and a teacher educates in. When the user submits an HTTP POST to create a new class for their application, a lot of the key value pairs look like: student_name: Bob Smith student_name: Jane Smith student_name: Chris Smith What's the best way to handle this on both the client side (let's say the client is cURL or ActiveResource, whatever..) and what's a decent way of handling this on the server-side if my server is a Ruby on Rails app? Need a way to allow for multiple keys with the same name and without any namespace clashing or loss of data.

• Verifying university membership/attendance via email address

  My client's web app allows members to sign up (Rails using AuthLogic) and those signups are limited in that they must be under the auspices of a university. To wit: A university organizer can sign up to be the representative of a university, and students can sign up as "attendees" of that university. I've been tasked with finding if there is a programmatic way to verify university membership/attendance. The only way I can see doing this is having a database of universities and a database of associated emails, and verifying that the student's email address is part of this database. That doesn't help if using Facebooker and AuthLogic's "sign up with Facebook credentials" ability, however. I suspect the answer to this is "via human intervention," and that this is something we can't solve programmatically. Either we, or the university, will have to bite the bullet and check records. However, I'd thought I'd ask if anyone else has run into the issue of verification of university membership before.

  Being a CS student I've had to take a course in basic software engineering. I was a little curious to find such elaborate "software development processes", like the spiral model, the waterfall model, et cetera. Some of these methodologies seem a little antiquated to me and, after speaking with several employed developers, I can't seem to find anyone who actually adheres to these models. Does anyone here have experience working under the guidance of these models? Were they useful to you and your team during the development of your product? Or are these models just some way to communicate a sense of progression to interested parties outside of the development team?

• How do I change careers to become a programmer with little money

  I'm currently a network engineer, but find myself wanting to get into the world of development. I took a little bit of Java in college, am 27 years old and have been network engineering for 4 years now. I have a mortgage and student loans so going back to school would be difficult. I'm willing to put in however much hardwork is needed around my full time job to learn, but part of me feels I may need actuall schooling to get down some of the advanced concepts.   I am Final Year IT Engineering student. I am Doing Content Management System in ASP.net for my college. I have given link on my master page for various pages in the application; where I have specified only relative path of those pages. When I run this project and follow any link it works well for only first time and for second time when I click any link it .net run time environment unable to find the absolute address of that page. • Trying to use VB to automate some queries. Running into what looks like a string problem

  Hi there I'm using MS Access 2003 and I'm trying to execute a few queries at once using VB. When I write out the query in SQL it works fine, but when I try to do it in VB it asks me to "Enter Parameter Value" for DEPA, then DND (which are the first few letters of a two strings I have).   Background: I'm going to start studying/coding at the local university's library. Since I'm not a student, I won't be able to utilize their wireless internet access. Since StackOverflow is such a great resource, I want to be able to take it with me, so I'm building a small desktop application to load/search/display the most recent data dumps. Problem: I want to display code blocks in the same sort of rectangular block as this site does, so I played with the RichTextBox control to try to create this effect. Unfortunately, the RichTextBox.SelectedBackColor property only colors the actual text, when what I want is a rectangle reaching to the outer limits of the selection. If not, are there any other controls I could use to create this effect?

  i am new in iphone development, i am using table view to list name of the student, what i want to do is i want to get the row number of the cell the user pressed , currently i can get the name(string) of the cell, //code in didSelectRowAtIndexPath //the obj.name where is a string, it works fine obj.name=[obj.studentname objectAtIndex:indexPath.row]; //if i try obj.num , where num is nsinteger .i am getting errors of type i dnt understand obj.num=[[obj.studentname objectAtIndex:indexPath.row]count]; i even tried but i cant get the number. example if faizan lies on 12th cell. what i want to do is,is save 12 in a number and show it on the next view label.i cant put it in the variable thanks for your help in advance

• 8051 microcontroller kit recommendation?

  I'm a first year Computer Science student looking to get started with development for micro-controllers. I'd like to use the 8051, as it's common as dirt, and is used frequently in the real world. During my junior or senior year, I'll be taking a PIC micro-controller based embedded design class, so I'd rather not do PIC now; otherwise, I'll be fairly bored during that course. Most commercial kits I see are for the AVR or PIC series of microprocessors. I'm just looking for something with decent development tools, documentation, and enough add-ons to keep my novice self occupied for the summer. Any recommendations for an 8051 family kit? Thanks!

  I am working for a project to create a database for saving different persons contact details in sql. For example, X person saves 10 contacts, Y persons save 15 contacts, z persons save 20 contacts and so on. I cant create seperate tables to save contacts of x,y,z and so on. But i just want to know the alternative method to do that. Is there any easy method to save different cotacts and is there any easy method to retrieve it.   I'm using Jasper Reports/iReports crosstabs to create a matrix of student and results. So for example Jim is doing subjects A, B, C and Sally is doing A, C What I want is something like: Subj-A Subj-B Subj-C Jim P M D Sally D D But as my SQL orders by name then subject I get: Subj-A Subj-B Subj-C Subj-A Subj-C Jim P M D Sally D D As you can see in the above the results are correct but the formatting is woeful. Is there anyway I can generate the reports to use names and subject only once and filling in the values from here? This probably isn't clear.
