• VirtualBox: Can't get Bridged Networking to work (Win7 host)

  I'm trying to set up a virtual LAMP server, including sharing files between the guest OS (Ubuntu Server) and the host OS (Windows 7) using samba. I think my problem is that I can't get Bridged (or Host-Only) networking to work in VirtualBox. I can boot the Linux VM just fine with NAT, but then can't access any services on it directly (except after port-forwarding port 80)(my understanding is that port-forwarding works because I'm not running a web server on the host OS, and therefore it can forward traffic to the unused port 80). I don't think that port-forwarding samba traffic (from the host to the guest) will work since I think that the host OS is using those ports. When I turn off NAT and turn bridged networking on I get an error. The VM fails to boot, with a dialog popping up (title: VirtualBox - Error) that says "Failed to open a session for the virtual machine UbuntuServer. Configuration error: Failed to get MAC address (VERR_CFGM_VALUE_NOT_FOUND). I'm hoping that once this is resolved then samba will work ok :) Any advice on this would be great (how to fix it would be wonderful, next steps for troubleshooting would be great, too :) )

  I frequently access media files (music or video) on a remote Windows file share. My Internet connection is not very fast, and I find it a waste of bandwidth when I repeatedly access the same files. For example, I may listen to the same song 30 times in a month. So, I would like to cache files I've used. I know Windows has an "Always available offline" feature but I think it doesn't suit my needs. I don't want to make the whole share "available offline" as the remote Windows file share is huge (in terabytes). Making individual files "available offline" is tedious as the files are scattered in many different directories. It would be much more convenient if I can simply cache those I've used. Also The files on the share seldom change. Many of the files are rarely used. Some of the files are frequently used. I don't have a list of the most frequently used files. So I think the best way is to have a caching proxy for the Windows share. What do you think? I have a Linux box sitting around. Perhaps I should try to setup samba4?

• AMD switchable graphics are not working OR I don't know how to make them work

  I don't know if this is the right place for this question, but I'll give it a shot. I have a Dell Inspiron 17R 5721. It's supposed to be using switchable graphics. It has an Intel HD 4000 and a Radeon HD 8730M and I'm using windows 8. My problem is this, I Installed the drivers that dell gives me but I don't see the AMD graphics card ANYWHERE ( I do see it in device manager but not anywhere else to select and play a game using AMD). I installed the latest drivers from AMD and same thing, I can't run a game with AMD graphics card. I change the applications preferences in the Catalyst control center but even after that, games don't give me the option to select the AMD card, they list only the Intel HD 4000. Can someone tell me what I have to do to make this work? ------------------- After looking around and messing with stuff. I think.... I THINK that you don't really get the option to select a graphics card. Switchable graphics is all about switching automatically depending on application's needs. Cause when I uninstalled AMD's drivers or actually (screwed up lol) games were playing much worse. When I re-installed them, games went back to being good looking. So even if a game sees only the Intel HD 4000 graphics card windows or AMD's drivers will switch to the AMD Readeon graphics card automatically. I hope someone can verify this. Cause seriously I don't think you get to play scyrim with High graphics settings or even ultra with the Intel HD Graphics card. -------------------

• Modifier key bug with Adobe Design Standard CS4 (Mac OS 10.6.6)

  When I launch the Adobe apps, they ask me if I want to delete the preferences file. I say 'no'. Then, when using the apps, none of the tools seem to work properly, eg in Illustrator, I can't move objects without it duplicating the object. Photoshop constantly displays the contextual menu icon that usually only appears when you hold down the control key. I can't do any work in them when this happens, so I am forced to log out and then back in. They work for a while and then this annoying bug happens again. I think it must be to do with the modifier keys (command option and control). I think Adobe's apps must think I'm permanently pressing the modifier keys down - the thing is, no other app on my machine has this problem! Does anyone else experience this? Or have a fix for it? Any suggestions much appreciated. Running: Mac OS X 10.6.6 on an iMac. Adobe CS4 Design standard installed.

• Processing-time billing in Amazon EC2

  Hi all! I think my question is fairly basic, but I would like a clarification: in the Pricing part of AWS we can see that Amazon charges people around .10 by the 'instance computing hour'. I've seen in a blog post somewhere (can't remember where exactly, and even if I did I think it was in Portuguese anyway) that this way your minimum monthly payment would be $72 (= .10 $s/hour x 24 hours x 30 days). Is this correct? (I don't think it is!) In my understanding is that this 'virtual computing time' is only used when your machine is actually doing something (serving pages, serving the admin via ssh, whatever), so real billable usage would be less than 720 hours/month in most webserver scenarios. Is my view correct? If it is, then it leads me to another question: is it economically interesting to buy access to one of these instances for testing? I mean, would I have the 'freedom' to 'forget' about it for a month and receive a very-close-to-zero (as in, a few cents) bill? Do you do it/know of anybody who does? Any thoughts on the matter (as in, "yes, it's a good idea", or "yes, but there's this 'gotcha': ...", or "no, nobody does it because of...")? PS: sorry for the loong question text. I highlighted the main questions for easy view. Also, I'm not sure if this question is actually more than one and if it's desirable for the community, so, sorry if it is too! Thanks in advance!

• Find out when a system went down?

  I have a Mac OS X 10.5 server, with a RAID set in it, that went down due to a power outage on Thursday, and the machine is not happily booting right now*. It is possible to find out when the machine went down, while not booted off the internal drive? (I'm booted off an external drive, waiting for the RAID sets to initialize.) Normally, I'd run last. The man page doesn't indicate that I can run it against a different startup volume. It looks possible to parse /var/log/utmpx, but I don't think it'd be worthwhile to try to do that from scratch for this one-off problem. * I'm still trying to figure out why it isn't happy, and may ask a follow-up question. Right now I can see that UserNotificationCenter crashed repeatedly early Thursday morning, and that securityd, mdworker, and ARDAgent crash shortly after startup [I think -- I want to verify when the box went up and down]. The login window does not come up right (I think it is crashing or not able to cope with a dead securityd). The box is supposed to be set to go down when the UPS tells it power is out; at the moment, I'm wondering if it went down, and turned back on multiple times! I sure hope not.

• Server 2008R2 in Extra Small Windows Azure Instance?

  Windows Azure hosting for an Extra Small (XS) Windows VM seems to come out to be about $10 a month right now. I think this XS instance gives you the equivalent of a 1 GHZ CPU with 768MB of RAM. I think the minimum requirements for Server 2008 is 1GHZ CPU with 512MB of RAM. Also, I think the minimum requirements for SQL Server Express is 1GHZ CPU with 256 MB of RAM and that the minimum requirements for Team Foundation Server Express 11 Beta is 2.2 GHZ CPU with 1 Gig of RAM (this 2.2 GHZ part could be a problem for my 1 GHZ XS VM...). Given the performance of the XS Azure instance, would I be able to install: a very basic MVC web site; a free instance of SQL Server Express; a free single user instance of Team Foundation Server Express 11 Beta and run the XS VM instance without serious crashing? I know there are other Shared WebHost providers that can provide these features for me, but those hosting providers have the following disadvantages: They sometimes cost a lot of money after all of the "addons" are in place They probably don't provide the level of security and employee integrity that Microsoft can provide They don't provide the total control that an Azure VM seems to provide

• Unexpected(?) high 'wasted' memory in memcached

  Looking at our memcached stats I think I have found an issue I was not aware of before. It seems that we have a strangely high amount of wasted space. I checked with phpmemcacheadmin for a change, and found this image staring at me: Now I was under the impression that the worst-case scenario would be that there is 50% waste, although I am the first to admit not knowing all the details. I have read - amongst others- this page which is indeed somewhat old, but so is our version of memcached. I think I do understand how the system works (e.g.) I believe, but I have a hard time understanding how we could get to 76% wasted space. The eviction rate that phpmemcacheadmin shows is 2 ev/s, so there is some problem here. The primary question is: what can I do to fix this. I could throw more memory at it (there is some extra available I think), maybe I should fiddle with the slab config (is that even possible with this version?), maybe there are other options? Upgrading the memcached version is not a quickly available option. The secondairy question, out of curiosity, is of course if the rate of 75% (and rising) wasted space is expected, and if so, why. System: This is currently not something I can do anything about, I know the memcached version isn't the newest, but these are the cards I've been dealt. Memcached 1.4.5 Apache 2.2.17 PHP 5.3.5

• Is it possible to download extremely large files intelligently or in parts via SSH from Linux to Windows?

  I have a ~35 GB file on a remote Linux Ubuntu server. Locally, I am running Windows XP, so I am connecting to the remote Linux server using SSH (specifically, I am using a Windows program called SSH Secure Shell Client version 3.3.2). Although my broadband internet connection is quite good, my download of the large file often fails with a Connection Lost error message. I am not sure, but I think that it fails because perhaps my internet connection goes out for a second or two every several hours. Since the file is so large, downloading it may take 4.5 to 5 hours, and perhaps the internet connection goes out for a second or two during that long time. I think this because I have successfully downloaded files of this size using the same internet connection and the same SSH software on the same computer. In other words, sometimes I get lucky and the download finishes before the internet connection drops for a second. Is there any way that I can download the file in an intelligent way -- whereby the operating system or software "knows" where it left off and can resume from the last point if a break in the internet connection occurs? Perhaps it is possible to download the file in sections? Although I do not know if I can conveniently split my file into multiple files -- I think this would be very difficult, since the file is binary and is not human-readable. As it is now, if the entire ~35 GB file download doesn't finish before the break in the connection, then I have to start the download over and overwrite the ~5-20 GB chunk that was downloaded locally so far. Do you have any advice? Thanks.

• Strange sound behavior

  First of all, sorry for the tittle. English isn't my native language, and I can't find a word to describe the strange behavior I'm getting here. In the most simple explanation, is like sound keeps going down and up again... Think in a kid with that old radios that have a circled volume button. Think like these kid keeps "turning" the volume button. That is the behavior I'm getting here. At first, I believed that it was a pulseaudio issue, but, it isn't. I followed the wiki part I think that should be my problem, but it didn't work. After that, as I'm using XFCE, I didn't really need pulseaudio, so I removed it and stays with a clean alsa, hopping that will fix my problem. Sweet mistake. It really looks like a kid looking for trouble. I believed it worked, and, suddenly, here is the same issue again. BTW: I have a full-upgraded testing system (yeah, I upgraded to testing hopping for new pulseaudio version which fix the issue), no pulseaudio at all, just xfce, started with startxfce. What can I do to fix this? It's extremely annoying... sometimes I just want to throw my laptop in the wall because of this. Any extra info you need, please, tell me. • Wireless card overheating?

  Ok, so I've had my laptop for several years (I wanna say 4, but possibly more), it's a Toshiba Satellite. I'm running Linux mint 15, and am having a strange new issue, after several hours of running my wireless stops. It can SEE wireless networks, but refuses to connect to any of them. (On a sidenote, connecting to a router with a cable at this point works fine) The fact that it can SEE the networks make me think the card is in good condition, and it's software related The fact that it works for several hours before booting me makes me think perhaps the transmitter is getting too hot. I don't use my laptop in dusty environments, and keep it on an elevated surface (alternatively, I actively try not to let it sit on soft surfaces where the vents get covered). I spray out the cpu fan about once a year with compressed air about once a year, so I really don't think the insides should be too dirty. Finally, unfortunately, sensors only gives me CPU temps, but they run about 40-50 degrees C, which from my understanding is perfectly normal for an I3. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to determine the root cause of this?

• How can I pair two bluetooth dongles together?

  I want to hack a device which connects via USB, and plug a bluetooth USB dongle to the end of the USB cable (using a female to female adapter), and then connect to that device from another USB bluetooth dongle connected to my computer. How can I do this? It is straightforward? I don't want to spend $30 before I know how to do this. Also I think another concern is that the USB cable is providing power to the device. So I think that means I would also have to hack it for power. I have created this diagram in Photoshop to illustrate my intent: (NOTE: it won't be a USB mouse, as that would be pointless because there are already wireless mice in existence. The mouse is displayed for illustrative purposes) Don't tell me "it won't work". Because I KNOW it WILL work. Think for example, PS3 controller. That works, and in fact I was able to get it working with my laptop, over bluetooth. I just want to know HOW to make it work.

  I'm a linux newbie and the only reason I have it installed is so I can stop having Windows incompatibility issues with Ruby on Rails. Having said that, it sure has been nice, and much faster, and I don't think I'll be doing any Winrails stuff anytime soon. So I created a virtualmachine using virtualbox and have had ubuntu on it for the last 3 weeks. Recently ubuntu asked if it could update a few things, I clicked 'ok'. Now it won't boot and I get this error: *mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory ... Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init. No init found. Try passing init= bootarg BusyBox v1.13.3... (initramfs) _ * So I cruised the forums and there are a variety of solutions, but they all have to do with booting from the live cd. (which I assume is the ISO image I used to install ubuntu in the first place). But when I boot from that CD, it just hangs on the ubuntu screen, and the little dots keep cycling white to red, but it hung there for an hour so I think it was stuck. Not sure what I can do; can I do anything from the busybox shell (or whatever that is) to fix things? The thing is, it took about 10 hours to get everything the way I needed with all the gems and whatnot. And I didn't really write down what I tweaked, and I'm middle aged, so all that information has leaked out by now and I don't want to do it again. I'd really like to repair my existing install. One question you might have is, is there something wrong with the ISO? I don't think so, because I made a new virtual machine and used that same iso file to install a fresh ubuntu. • sudo or acl or setuid/setgid?

  for a reason I do not really understand, everyone wants sudo for all and everything. At work we even have as many entries as there are way to read a logfile (head/tail/cat/more, ...). I think, sudo is defeating here. I'd rather use a mix of setgid/setuid directories and add ACL here and there but I really need to know what are the best practices before starting up. Our servers have %admin, %production, %dba, %users -i.e many groups and many users. Each service (mysql, apache, ...) has its own way to install privileges but members of the %production group must be able to consult configuration file or even log files. There is still the solution to add them into the right groups (mysql...) and set the good permission. But I do not want to usermod all users, I do not want to modify standards permissions since it could change after each upgrade. On the other hand, setting acls and/or mixing setuid/setgid on directories is something I could easily do without "defacing" the standard distribution. What do you think about this ? Taking the mysql example, that would look like this: setfacl d:g:production:rx,d:other::---,g:production:rx,other::--- /var/log/mysql /etc/mysql Do you think this is good practise or should I definetely usermod -G mysql and play with standard permissions system ? • Diagnosing PC crashes (most often while using shared folders or torrents)

  For the last few weeks my PC (pretty old P4 with WinXP SP3) has been crashing randomly. It just suddenly reboots instanteneously. It feels hardware-related but I wasn't able to determine wether it's software or hardware that causes it. I did notice a pattern though: it's more likely to crash when I copy a lot of files over network or have uTorrent running, but sometimes it crashes when I am not doing anything with it. Copying files from it over network causes it to crash in 1 to 10 minutes almost every time. Using torrents causes it to crash every 1-3 hours. With neither or that on it crashes every 24 hours or so. I ruled out the following probable causes: PSU (I bought a new one and turned off most of the drives so the power is sufficient 100%) Bad HDD or interface cable on my SATA disk from which I was originally copying the data over network (bought new SATA cable and later yanked out the HDD completely, PC still crashes without it) Video adapter (AGP slot is now empty, using the onboard VGA at the moment) Network adapter (removed it from PCI, using onboard LAN) CPU (I think: I changed the termopaste and it's temperature is below 50C) RAM (I think: I ran Memtest86 and it didn't show any errors) At the moment I only have only one system HDD and DVD drives, a mouse and a keyboard plugged in. The fact that it crashes most often when I use network extensively makes me think that maybe it's software related (I removed the network adapter from PCI and now am using an onboard one, so network hardware is unlikely to cause problems). I am now pondering system reinstall but it's not a pleasant solution so I decided to ask wether there are better ideas first. If someone can share a good diagnostic tool it would be great because I didn't find anything good. Thanks in advance, I hope that "help to diagnose" questions aren't entirely banned here. EDIT: Motherboard is actually ~4 years old as I replaced it back in 2007

• Given year, month and day, all in int, how would I generate an NSDate

  I think the solution is really simple, I just haven't come across it online. Suppose I am given int year, int month, int day, int hour, int min, int sec.. how do I generate NSDate out of it? I know we can use [NSDate initWithString:] but I think it gets complicated if month/day/hour/min/sec are one digit numbers. Thanks in advance for your help.
