  Hi Ok dealing with Partial Loops I want to do several things Perhaps pass in extra variables - seen it done like this echo $this-partialLoop('Loop.phtml', array('data' = $data, 'var1' = foo)); But this does not seem to work - I can not extra the data using $this-var $this-data-var or $data-var not sure how to access the data in the loop Sutotals for columns - need a way of resetting variables or passing in a default value - linked to the above I suppose ie $subtotal += rowTotal; In the view that calls the partial I would like to get access to the subtotal values generated so I can display these in another table below. Any help appreciated the docs on partialLoop seems incomplete. Ian

• Show javascript execution progress

  I have some javascript functions that take about 1 to 3 seconds. (some loops or mooML templating code.) During this time, the browser is just frozen. I tried showing a "loading" animation (gif image) before starting the operation and hiding it afterwords. but it just doesnt work. The browser freezes before it could render the image and hides it immediately when the function ends. Is there anything I can do to tell the browser to update the screen before going into javascript execution., Something like Application.DoEvents or background worker threads. So any comments/suggestions about how to show javascript execution progress. My primary target browser is IE6, but should also work on all latest browsers

• Adding ID's to google map markers

• question about select() and range of for loop to read sockets

  Just a quick question about using select(). I'm using select() to read from multiple sockets. When I looked up examples on how to use select(), a lot of tutorials showed going through for loops and checking for FD_ISSET. The problem I have with those tutorials is that the for loop starts from i = 0. and checks if the bit has been set for the file descriptor i using FD_ISSET. Couldn't the for loop start from say your minfd (just like how you would keep track of maxfd)?? Or am I missing something?? Following link is an example of such for loop (look at the fourth example that he gives) http://www.developerweb.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2933 If that was the only example out there that used such for loop, I might understand it was a mistake or bad coding but I've seen several examples of such for loop of uselessly going through literally thousands of sockets and I'm convinced I'm missing something. Any comments or inputs are appreciated.

• Is a switch statement ok for 30 or so conditions?

  I am in the final stages of creating an MP4 tag parser in .Net. For those who have experience with tagging music you would be aware that there are an average of 30 or so tags. If tested out different types of loops and it seems that a switch statement with Const values seems to be the way to go with regard to catching the tags in binary. The switch allows me to search the binary without the need to know which order the tags are stored or if there are some not present but I wonder if anyone would be against using a switch statement for so many conditionals. Any insight is much appreciated.

  I'm helping a friend with a java problem. However, we've hit a snag. We're using Java.Util.Scanner.nextInt() to get a number from the user, asking continiously if the user gives anything else. Only problem is, we can't figure out how to do the error handeling. What we've tried: do { int reloop = 0; try { number = nextInt(); } catch (Exception e) { System.out.println ("Please enter a number!"); reloop ++; } } while(reloop != 0); Only problem is, this loops indefinatly if you enter in something not a number. Any help?

• Is there any way to code breakpoints/debugging?

  I've been wondering this for a while - is there a way to code/program breakpoints...? Conditionally? For example, can I specify something like - "when this variable becomes this value, break and open the debugger"? (Would be quite useful, especially in long loops when you want to debug loop execution of a late loop value.) I suppose this may be IDE-specific since debugging is implemented differently in different IDEs... I'd be interested to know how to do this in any IDE, but specifically in Eclipse and Visual Studio.

  Hi, I'm looking for a "roller toggle" in jquery (ideally using a plugin). If I have the following HTML: <ul> <li>Option 1</li> <li>Option 2</li> <li>Option 3</li> </ul> I would like the first option to be displayed and the others hidden. Each time I "tap/click" on an option it displays the next and loops around to the first one after the last one. When used on a mobile web device I'd like it respond to swipe up/down events and appear like a "roller" (i.e. using a slide up/down effect). Too much to ask? Hopefully not, any pointers appreciated.   I've recently learned Haskell, and am trying to carry the pure functional style over to my other code when possible. An important aspect of this is treating all variables as immutable, i.e. constants. In order to do so, many computations that would be implemented using loops in an imperative style have to be performed using recursion, which typically incurs a memory penalty due to the allocation a new stack frame for each function call. In the special case of a tail call (where the return value of a called function is immediately returned to the callee's caller), however, this penalty can be bypassed by a process called tail call optimization (in one method, this can be done by essentially replacing a call with a jmp after setting up the stack properly). Does MATLAB perform TCO by default, or is there a way to tell it to?

  Is it recommended to count in small loops (where possible) down from length - 1 to zero instead of counting up to length - 1? 1.) Counting down for (int i = a.length - 1; i >= 0; i--) { if (a[i] == key) return i; } 2.) Counting up for (int i = 0; i < a.length; i++) { if (a[i] == key) return i; } The first one is slightly faster that the second one (because comparing to zero is faster) but is a little more error-prone in my opinion. Besides, the first one could maybe not be optimized by future improvements of the JVM. Any ideas on that?

In functional programming language,this is easy , I don't know how java do this? Maybe could be done through dynamic proxy, does that have a performance trade off?

• Strange profiling results: definitely non-bottleneck method pops up

  I'm profiling a program using sampling profiling in YourKit and JProfiler, and also "manually" (I launch it and press Ctrl-Break several times to get thread dumps). All three methods give me extremely strange results: some tens of percents of time spent in a 3-line method that does not even do any allocation or synchronization and doesn't have loops etc. Moreover, after I made this method into a NOP and even removed its invocation completely, the observable program performance didn't change at all (although it got a negligible memory leak, since it was a method for freeing a cheap resource). I'm thinking that this might be because of the constraints that JVM puts on the moments at which a thread's stacktrace may be taken, and it somehow turns out that in my program it is exactly the moments where this method is invoked, although there is absolutely nothing special about it or the context in which it is invoked. What can be the explanation for this phenomenon? What are the aforementioned constraints? What further measurements can I take to clarify the situation?

• Difficulties of transforming a Java program to another language (or vice versa)

  Is there anything simple Java can't do that can be done in a similar language or vice versa? Lets say you have a piece of software in language X and you rewrite it entirely to Java (or the other way around), what are the little things that would seriously hamper the translation? At first I was thinking of comprehensions or multiple exit loops, but these are easily rewritten with a for_each loop with an if statement and a local variable respectively. Maybe Exceptions? But which language does not have a similar construct? Polymorphism? But I don't see how I could show that in a few lines. I'm looking for a short and sweet example, that would give some serious headache to work around.

• C++ HTML template framework, templatizing library, HTML generator library

  I am looking for template/generator libraries for C++ that are similar to eg. Ruby's Erb, Haml, PHP's Smarty, etc. It would be great if I it would sport some basic features like loops, if/else, int conversion to strings, etc. Parameter passing to template rendering engine is also important if I could pass all of them in a hash map instead of calling some function for each of parameters. Do you have any recommendations? I can see also the possibility of embedding languages like Lua, however I haven't found a templatizing library for that either. Thanks!

  Since I was 12, I was always wondering how I can make a function which calculates the power (e.g. 23) myself. In most languages these are included in the standard library, mostly as pow(double x, double y), but how can I write it myself? I was thinking about for loops, but it think my brain got in a loop (when I wanted to do a power with a non-integer exponent, like 54.5 or negatives 2-21) and I went crazy ;) So, how can I write a function which calculates the power of a real number? • Is it possible to combine these 3 mySQL queries?

  I know the $downloadfile - and I want the $user_id. By trial and error I found that this does what I want. But it's 3 separate queries and 3 while loops. I have a feeling there is a better way. • Django's manage.py shell won't indent

  I seem to have run into a strange bug or more likely some setting I am unfamiliar with on my system that is not allowing me to tab when I am in Django's shell (python manage.py shell is how I run it). For obvious reasons this is proving to be annoying since I can't do any loops or conditonals in the shell. If I hit tab it completes all functions that are available to me, like bash does in a terminal. I've tried just using spaces for my indents but I always get an indentation error. Does anyone know why this is happening and what I can do to get tab to work in my shell again? (It may be relevant to know that this is on a Ubuntu 9.04 system). Edit: tab works fine in the regular pythong shell, it's only in django's that it doesn't. Thanks.

But because I declare the variable's value at the beginning of the script, the velocity variables don't stay on what I change it to. I need a way to change the variable's value permanently.   I am in the process of designing a system where i need to keep on trying to connect to MQ server unitl i get a connection. By default if the MQ is not availlble it will thorugh exception. How can call the same method again and again until i get the connection. I know i can use recursion, is there any better way to do it . Becuase i would like to avoid infinite loops. I also want to wait the the furthere processing until i get connection. I am using .net 2.0 with C#. It is window Service application.

  I am using pthread.h in a *.cc file. when I try to use pthread_exit(0); or pthread_join(mythrds[yy],NULL); it says : .cc:(.text+0x3e): undefined reference to `pthread_exit' when complied very similar code in a *.c file with gcc it work perfect. How Can I use pthread's in c++.. • Looking for jQuery slideshow where a user can hide/show a block of text (link, caption)

  I'm looking to implement a fairly basic jQuery slideshow. One that automatically loops through a set number of images. The snag I'm running into is i'd like to have a little icon in the corner of the picture, that when clicked, brings up a transparent black bar across the bottom with some text and perhaps a link. Has anybody come across anything like this?
