• CSS: How to affect OTHER elements when a div is hovered

  I think this is a very basic question but I not sure how/if it can be done. What I want to do is to is a certain div is hovered, affect the properties of another div. For example, in this simple example when you hover over #cube it changes the background-color but what I that when I hover over #container, #cubeis affected. I don't want to explain further cause I think it might be confusing, but please ask the the question is no clear enough!! Thanks in advance!! jQueriers: abstain yourselves!! only CSS answers :)

• Java application failing on special characters.

  An application I am working on reads information from files to populate a database. Some of the characters in the files are non-English, for example accented French characters. The application is working fine in Windows but on our Solaris machine it is failing to recognise the special characters and is throwing an exception. For example when it encounters the accented e in "Gérer" it says :- Encountered: "\u0161" (353), after : "\'G\u00c3\u00a9rer les mod\u00c3" (an exception which is thrown from our application) I suspect that in order to stop this from happening I need to change the file.encoding property of the JVM. I tried to do this via System.setProperty() but it has not stopped the error from occurring. Are there any suggestions for what I could do? I was thinking about setting the basic locale of the solaris platform in /etc/default/init to be UTF-8. Does anyone think this might help? Any thoughts are much appreciated.

• Streaming multiple TObjects to a TMemoryStream

  I need to store multiple objects (most of them are TObject/non persistent) to a TMemoryStream, save the stream to disk and load it back. The objects need to be streamed one after each other. Some kind of universal container. I started to make several functions that store stuff to stream - for example function StreamReadString(CONST MemStream: TMemoryStream): string; StreamWriteString(CONST MemStream: TMemoryStream; s: string); However, it seems that I need to rewrite a lot of code. One of the many examples is TStringList.LoadFromStream that will not work so it needs to be rewritten. This is because TStringList needs to be the last object in the stream (it reads from current position to the end of the stream). Anybody knows a library that provide basic functionality like this? I am using Delphi 7 so RTTI won't help too much.

  Quick Background Since learning basic html 5 years ago, I've become completely obsessed with the technology, the logic, and the thrill of solving problems involved with building websites. I am still stuck at a thoroughly non-programming type job, but would really like to move into the field of web programming/design. I have no educational background in the field (was trained as a fine artist and tutor), but in the past few years have progressed fully self-taught (and self-motivated) from html to css to php, mysql, jquery, and am now building rich web applications. The Question How can I prove to a company that even though I have no education, I have a passion to learn whatever is thrown my way? ...That essentially I would come at every issue with not only knowledge, but with a passionate desire to solve it, whether that means tackling a new language or debugging code for hours at a time? p.s. • Using a class within another class in asp.net

  In my site I have class A which selects the required page module (blog,content,gallery etc). I also have class B which provides sqlclient database objects and sql statements. If I use class B in a web form via "Imports Class B". I am able to access the contents. I now would like to use class B within class A but am struggling to find the correct syntax for importing it. Please can someone give me a basic example. We are coming from a classic asp background, and used to simply use includes. We are using VB Thanks.

  Visual sutdio 2008 has the ability to automatically create unit test stubs. • Python how to handle # in a dictionary

  I've got some json from last.fm's api which I've serialised into a dictionary using simplejson. A quick example of the basic structure is below. { "artist": "similar": { "artist": { "name": "Blah", "image": {"#text":"URLHERE","size": "small"} "image": {"#text":"URLHERE","size": "medium"} "image": {"#text":"URLHERE","size": "large"} } } } Any ideas how I can access the image urls of various different sizes. My attempts at accessing the #text variable don't seem to work because python doesn't appear to like #'s in the names. And any ideas how I can easily get the url for the depending on the size? • Tips for improving performance of DB that is above size 40 GB (Sql Server 2005) and growing monthly

  The current DB or our project has crossed over 40 GB this month and on an average it is growing monthly by around 3 GB. Now all the tables are best normalized and proper indexing has been used. But still as the size is growing it is taking more time to fire even basic queries like 'select count(1) from table'. So can u share some more points that will help in this front. Database is Sql Server 2005. Further if we implement Partitioning wouldn't it create a overhead ? Thanks in advance.

• How and when to log account access login with PHP?

  I want to implement a basic login system in some PHP app where no cookies will be involved. I mean, the user closes the browser and the login expires, it will remain active during the browser session (or if the user explicitly logs out) otherwise. I want to log all this activity and I'm thinking that every time the user refreshes the page, opens a different link or logs out, I record that time as the last access made by that user, overwriting the previous access log. But my problem is when and how should I insert another record into the database instead of overwriting the last one? Should I just define a timeout and if the last access was made above that timeout, another log should be inserted into the database? Should the session expire too after that timeout? Or is there a better way? Ideally, I would like to log the "log out action" when the browser was closed, but I don't think there's a way to detect that is there? Suggestions?

• PHP Framework Benefits / Downfalls

  I have been a PHP developer for about 10 years now and until about a month ago I have never used a framework. The framework I am now using due to an existing codebase is cakePHP 1.2 I can see certain benefits of the frameworks with the basic helpers like default layouts. I can deffinately seen the benefits of MVC keeping the logic sperate etc. But the query building just seems to be bloated. Is this expected? Am I likely to be able to build better queries than the framework could build? I just feel I could get my apps running better without a framework. What are your thoughts?

• Build Pipelining and Continuous Integration with Maven and Hudson

  Currently the my team is considering splitting our single CI build process into a more streamlined multi-stage process to speed up basic build feedback and isolate different ci concerns. The idea we had was to have each stage exist in Hudson as a different build with the correct maven goal or maven plugin execution, then chain them together using the post-build hooks of Hudson. However to my knowledge, Maven as a build tool mandates that any lifecycle phase which is performed automatically builds every preceding lifecycle phase. This presents a number of problems the most significant of which is that maven is recreating the build resources with each distinct call and not using those of the previous stage. This not only breaks the consistency of the build lifecycle but has much more unnecessary processing overhead. Is there a way to accomplish pipelining with CI using Maven? Assuming there is, is there a way to let Hudson know to use those resources built from the previous stage in the next one?

  Hi, After many years of Windows development in C/C++ i've decided to make a move to linux, and see if i can put together a simple screen saver. The code is an SDL based OpenGL particle engine affair, nothing too complex. I've got the code running ok as a stand-alone app, but i have been having some trouble finding out how to build a screen saver app. I'm running ubuntu 10.04 if that makes much difference, but i was wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of a decent tutorial on building basic gnome screen savers.   I've created an ashx page which is going to serve me an XML document full of basic user information. I'm not sure which is the best way to go about creating and populating my custom javascript object. I've seen them created in two ways: function User() { this.Id; this.FirstName; this.LastName; this.Title; } and var User2 = { Id: null, FirstName: null, LastName: null, Title: null } I could populate each of these by doing something like: //first object User.Id = 1 //second object User2.FirstName = 'John' Is one method of creating the object better than the other?

• Collectable<T> serialization, Root Namespaces on T in .xml files.

  I have a Repository Class with the following method... public T Single<T>(Predicate<T> expression) { using (var list = (Models.Collectable<T>)System.Xml.Serializer.Deserialize(typeof(Models.Collectable<T>), FileName)) { return list.Find(expression); } } Where Collectable is defined.. [Serializable] public class Collectable<T> : List<T>, IDisposable { public Collectable() { } public void Dispose() { } } And an Item that uses it is defined.. [Serializable] [System.Xml.Serialization.XmlRoot("Titles")] public partial class Titles : Collectable<Title> { } The problem is when I call the method, it expects "Collectable" to be the XmlRoot, but the XmlRoot is "Titles" (all of object Title). I have several classes that are collected in .xml files like this, but it seems pointless to rewrite the basic methods for loading each up when the generic accessors do it - but how can I enforce the proper root name for each file without hard coding methods for each one? The [System.Xml.Serialization.XmlRoot] seems to be ignored.

  Hello! I am writing a simple C# application that is handling bank savings. I want to be able to show the results on either, yearly, monthly or quarterly basic how can this be done? How can I loop through a set of results and only show every third post (if I am using quarterly) for example. In Python I can use range(1,31,3) but how is it done in C#? UPDATE 1 I want to loop 12 times (annually) and calculate the interest each loop but I only want to print the results every third loop (quarterly). How can I achieve this? Please help!

• iPhone - Landscape Only App

  Hello all! I am trying to make an app that will only be viewed in Landscape. I have looked up some tutorials (albeit older ones) and have done the following: -set up the info.plist to include a key for uiinterfaceorientation -in the main view controller I have set the frame to be 480 x 320 Now, the first screen loads up ok. Everything is where it should be and whatnot. However, if I click a button that is set to present a modal view controller nothing happens. Everything is linked and coded correctly but nothing happens when I press the button. Am I doing something wrong with trying to force landscape? At it's basic, this question is a how do you effectively make an app that will only be in landscape mode? Thanks for any help.

• Need to get pixel averages of a vector sitting on a bitmap...

  I'm currently involved in a hardware project where I am mapping triangular shaped LED to traditional bitmap images. I'd like to overlay a triangle vector onto an image and get the average pixel data within the bounds of that vector. However, I'm unfamiliar with the math needed to calculate this. Does anyone have an algorithm or a link that could send me in the right direction? I'm not even clear what this type of math is called. • How Does a Login system generally work with OOP?

  Sorry if this is a badly formed question, but I'm trying to make my web applications (using PHP) more OO. *EDIT* I'm developing the Framework myself */EDIT* Everything is great so far, I've made a Front Controller system that taps into a MVC system. The FC figures out what page you want, loads the specific page Controller (*EDIT* which extends an abstract Controller Object */EDIT*), which gets anything it needs from Models, and then calls the appropriate View. Very basic. But now, I need to make an admin section (quasi-CMS). How does a login system fit into the grand scheme of things? Do you set controllers as needing a login? If so, how? What If you only want certain views of a controller requiring login? Thanks in advance.

Even if that window is not active. I do not want to make that window active but want to get a screen capture like if I was doing Alt+PrintScreen on it. • Proper error handling in a custom Zend_Autoloader?

  I'm building a custom autoloader based on Zend Framework's autoloading (related question here). The basic approach, taken from that question, is class My_Autoloader implements Zend_Loader_Autoloader_Interface { public function autoload($class) { // add your logic to find the required classes in here } } and then binding the new autoloader class to a class prefix. Now what I'm unsure about is how to handle errors inside the autoload method (for example, "class file not found") in a proper, ZF compliant way. I'm new to the framework, its conventions and style. Do I quietly return false and let the class creation process crash? Do I output an error or log message somehow (which would be nice to pinpoint the problem) and return false? If so, what is the Zend way of doing that? Do I trigger an error? Do I throw an exception? If so, what kind?

• What's a good book for learning BCPL?

  A long time ago, I worked on some BCPL code (very similar to C although even more basic, difficult though that is to imagine). Now, as part of a compiler course, we're going to be setting assignments for building some of the parts of the compiler (lexical and semantic analysis) and I'd like to know what the community thinks is the best book for learning about the language (and concrete why you think it's the best). Not how to write compilers for it, just on how to program in it. It'll be up to the students themselves to figure out how best to develop a compiler. We're using BCPL since the chance of people being able to plagiarise code for a compiler is very slim. Any suggestions?

  So this is probably really basic, but I'm fairly new to all this. I am using Entity Framework with POCO entities. I want to call a method when a class property is set. I am trying to build an advertisement platform. I have a Customer class, a Venue class and an Advertisement class. I have my indexes set up in such a way that I can call customer.venue. However, I want to be able to call Customer.Venue.CurrentAdvertisement and have it execute a method (if CurrentAdvertisement is null) and return the current advertisement. I know I can explicitly set it every time, but I want to be able to override my classes so that whenever the CurrentAdvertisement property is accessed via LINQ it runs that method to return an ad. In order to do this I need to pass the Venue class a variable (venue name).

• Update Facebook Page's status using pyfacebook

  I am attempting to add functionality to my Django app: when a new post is approved, I want to update the corresponding Facebook Page's status with a message and a link to the post automatically. Basic status update. I have downloaded and installed pyfacebook - and I have read through the tutorial from Facebook. I have also seen this suggestion here on SO: import facebook fb = facebook.Facebook('YOUR_API_KEY', 'YOUR_SECRET_KEY') fb.auth.createToken() fb.login() # THIS IS AS FAR AS I CAN GET fb.auth.getSession() fb.set_status('Checking out StackOverFlow.com') When I get to the login() call, however, pyfacebook tries to open lynx so I can login to Facebook 'via the web' -- this is, obviously, not going to work for me because the system is supposed to be automated ... I've been looking, but can't find out how I can keep this all working with the script and not having to login via a web browser. Any ideas?
