• libevent, windows and .NET programming

  I experiment with a lot of open source software and I've noticed a fair amount of server type applications in the open source world use libevent to facilitate event-based processing rather than spawn multiple threads to handle requests. I also do a lot of .NET programming (it's my core job function), and I'm interested in learning how libevent relates to the .NET event model. Are events in .NET the equivalent of libevent for C programs? Should I try to learn libevent and attempt to use it in custom .NET server applications or is using the standard .NET event model basically the same thing?

• System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement functions fail to probe some machines (but not others)

  Both the working and failing targets are machines in the same domain. Code is down below. When I use it against some machines in my domain, I get a System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement.PrincipalOperationException with a message: "While trying to retrieve the authorization groups, an error (1332) occurred." The error is thrown by GetAuthorizationGroups(). Note: The username I use to connect is a local admin to the machine in both cases. • Good examples of MVVM Template

  I am currently working with the Microsoft MVVM template and find the lack of detailed examples frustrating. The included ContactBook example shows very little Command handling and the only other example I've found is from an MSDN Magazine article where the concepts are similar but uses a slightly different approach and still lack in any complexity. Are there any decent MVVM examples that at least show basic CRUD operations and dialog/content switching? • svn: unknown hostname for hostname that does indeed exist

  I am running a centos 5 image on the vmware player and as of recently, I was able to check out from a repository that is no longer working. I am now getting: svn: Unknown hostname 'www.kennykong.com' It is a valid hostname and I know this because I have this svn location on Windows and I can browse/checkout no problem. After doing some searching I have (mostly blindly) assumed it's a DNS error because for i in 'grep nameserver /etc/resolv.conf | cut -d " " -f 2' ; do dig @$i domain.com ; done returns done ; <<>> DiG 9.3.6-P1-RedHat-9.3.6-4.P1.el5 <<>> @192.168.1.1 domain.com ; (1 server found) ;; global options: printcmd ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached I am unsure what to do from here to get my centos to recognize more servers

• Silverlight: DataContractSerializer cannot handle read only collection properties

  Hey Stackoverflowers :) For our Silverlight Project (SL4) I'm using a Model which might contain Lists (IList<AnotherModel>). According to good practice and rule CA2227:CollectionPropertiesShouldBeReadOnly the IList properties don't have a public setter. We serialize the Model using the DataContractSerializer which is working. But when I try to deserialize, a SecurityException is thrown by DataContractSerializer's ReadObject(Stream) Method, complaining that the target property (pointing to the IList property) cannot be set due to a missing public setter. Since the DataContractSerializer is sealed and neither extendable nor flexible so I currently see no chance to add some kind of additional rules which allow to deserialize the ILists using a foreach-loop on Add() method or some other method of transferring the collection items. I've also tried to dig into DataContractSerializer source (using Reflector) to create a little fork but it looks like i'd have to dig very deep and replicating whole serialization classes doesn't seem to be a viable solution. Do you see another chance to serialize a List with no public setter using the DataContractSerializer? Thank you very much in advance for your ideas! Thomas

• Spring MVC Controller redirect using URL parameters instead of in response.

  I am trying to implement RESTful urls in my Spring MVC application. All is well except for handling form submissions. • Does COM interop respect .NET AppDomain boundaries for assembly loading?

  Here's the core problem: I have a .NET application that is using COM interop in a separate AppDomain. The COM stuff seems to be loading assemblies back into the default domain, rather than the AppDomain from which the COM stuff is being called. What I want to know is: is this expected behaviour, or am I doing something wrong to cause these COM related assemblies to be loaded in the wrong AppDomain? Please see a more detailed description of the situation below... The application consists of 3 assemblies: - the main EXE, the entry point of the application. - common.dll, containing just an interface IController (in the IPlugin style) - controller.dll, containing a Controller class that implements IController and MarshalByRefObject. This class does all the work and uses COM interop to interact with another application. The relevant part of the main EXE looks like this: AppDomain controller_domain = AppDomain.CreateDomain("Controller Domain"); IController c = (IController)controller_domain.CreateInstanceFromAndUnwrap("controller.dll", "MyNamespace.Controller"); result = c.Run(); AppDomain.Unload(controller_domain); The common.dll only contains these 2 things: public enum ControllerRunResult{FatalError, Finished, NonFatalError, NotRun} public interface IController { ControllerRunResult Run(); } And the controller.dll contains this class (which also calls the COM interop stuff): public class Controller: IController, MarshalByRefObject When first running the application, Assembly.GetAssemblies() looks as expected, with common.dll being loaded in both AppDomains, and controller.dll only being loaded into the controller domain. After calling c.Run() however I see that assemblies related to the COM interop stuff have been loaded into the default AppDomain, and NOT in the AppDomain from which the COM interop is taking place. Why might this be occurring? And if you're interested, here's a bit of background: Originally this was a 1 AppDomain application. The COM stuff it interfaces with is a server API which is not stable over long periods of use. When a COMException (with no useful diagnostic information as to its cause) occurs from the COM stuff, the entire application has to restarted before the COM connection will work again. Simply reconnecting to the COM app server results in immediate COM exceptions again. To cope with this I have tried to move the COM interop stuff into a seperate AppDomain so that when the mystery COMExceptions occur I can unload the AppDomain in which it occurs, create a new one and start again, all without having to manually restart the application. That was the theory anyway...

  I have a Django model that relies on a tuple. I'm wondering what the best practice is for refering to constants within that tuple for my Django program. Here, for example, I'd like to specify "default=0" as something that is more readable and does not require commenting. Any suggestions? Status = ( (-1, 'Cancelled'), (0, 'Requires attention'), (1, 'Work in progress'), (2, 'Complete'), ) class Task(models.Model): status = models.IntegerField(choices=Status, default=0) # Status is 'Requires attention' (0) by default. EDIT: If possible I'd like to avoid using a number altogether. Somehow using the string 'Requires attention' instead would be more readable.

• Django deployment: PIL and virtualenv problem

  Hey guys, I'm deploying a Django site on my Vserver (Debian Lenny) and I'm having problem with PIL. I'm using virtualenv as well. When I'm in the virtualenv and type pip install -U PIL everything installs fine and I get this: *** TKINTER support not available --- JPEG support available --- ZLIB (PNG/ZIP) support available *** FREETYPE2 support not available *** LITTLECMS support not available And when I go in to the shell (python manage.py shell) and type from PIL import Image I get no error. But when I use it in the Django project (uploading an image in the admin for example) I just get No module named PIL I don't think it's a problem with the model because it works fine on the development machine but here is part of the class: class Category(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=255, verbose_name="Name") logo = models.ImageField(upload_to='images/category/', blank=True, null=True, verbose_name="Logo") I'm going out of my mind about this.   Hi all, Excel 2007 Hangs When Closing via .NET How to properly clean up Excel interop objects in C# How to properly clean up interop objects in C# All of these struggle with the problem that C# does not release the Excel COM objects properly after using them. There are mainly two directions of working around this issue: Kill the Excel process when Excel is not used anymore. Take care to assign each COM object used explicitly to a variable and to Marshal.ReleaseComObject all of these. Some have stated that 2 is too tedious and there is always some uncertainty whether you forget to stick to this rule at some places in the code. Still 1 seems dirty and dangerous to me, also I could imagine that in an environment with restricted access killing processes is not allowed. So I've been thinking about solving 2 by creating another proxy object model which mimics the Excel object model (for me, it would suffice to implement the objects I actually need). The principle would look as follows: Each Excel Interop class has its proxy which wraps an object of that class. The proxy releases the COM object in its destructor. The proxy mimics the interface of the Interop class (maybe by inheriting it). Any methods that usually return another COM object return a proxy instead. The other methods simply delegate the implementation to the inner COM object. Is it impossible/bad/dangerous to do the ReleaseCOMObject in the destructor? (I've only seen proposals to put it in a Dispose() rather than in a destructor - why?) If the approach makes sense, any suggestions to improve it?

  Hi, I'm a bit confused about a strange behavior of my JPA's related objects. I have three bundle : The User bundle does contain some user-related objects, but mainly the User object. The Energy bundle does contain some energy-related objects, and particularly a ConsumptionTerminal which contains a List of User. The Index bundle does contain an Index object that has no dependency at all. My OSGi environment is the following : A DataSource bundle that provide 2 services : dataSource and jpaVendorAdapter. The three bundles. They consume dataSource and jpaVendorAdapter. And finally, I'm using EclipseLink as Jpa provider and Spring DM (+ Spring DM Server in the development process) The problem is the following : When the User bundle is deployed, I'm able to persist User objects. When the User bundle and Energy bundles are both deployed, I'm not able to persist User objects (neither the Energy object). But I don't have any exception at all ! There is no problem at all with the Index bundle. The bug is dataSource independent (I tried with PostgreSQL and MySQL so far). My first conclusion was that the <class>net.nextep.amundsen.security.domain.User</class> in both persistence unit was causing the trouble. I tried without it (and hiding the User dependent object in the Energy bundle) but it failed too. I'm a bit confused about that bug. I'm also not quite sure about the transaction management in this context. I wasn't the one who designed this architecture (but I tell my intern OK without testing it.. shame on me) but if I could understand this bug and maybe fix it without rewrite the bundle (and break my intern work), I would appreciate. Am I doing something wrong ? (it's obvious, but what..) Did I miss something while reading documentation ? By the way, I'm also looking for some best practices or advices when it comes to JPA, EclipseLink (or whatever JPA Provider) and Spring DM (and OSGi in general). (File not found)) The people having this problem have said that the file / folder 'default' DOES exist exactly where is should be, so I have no idea why this isn't working. A little background: I use PowerShell on windows xp at work and I set a bunch of useful shortcuts in Microsoft.PowerShell_profile.ps1 in My Documents, trying to emulate Mac environment inspired by Ryan Bates's shortcuts I have things like: Set-Alias rsc Rails-Console function Rails-Console {Invoke-Expression "ruby script/console"} Which works just fine when in command prompt I say: rsc #it calls the proper command However this doesn't work properly Set-Alias rsg Rails-Generate function Rails-Generate {Invoke-Expression "ruby script/generate"} So when I do : rsg model User which is supposed to call ruby script/generate model User all it calls is ruby script/generate #Dumping my params So how would I properly modify my functions to take params I send to functions? • Django: UserProfile with Unique Foreign Key in Django Admin

  Hi, I have extended Django's User Model using a custom user profile called UserExtension. It is related to User through a unique ForeignKey Relationship, which enables me to edit it in the admin in an inline form! I'm using a signal to create a new profile for every new user: def create_user_profile(sender, instance, created, **kwargs): if created: try: profile, created = UserExtension.objects.get_or_create(user=instance) except: pass post_save.connect(create_user_profile, sender=User) (as described here for example: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/44109/extending-the-user-model-with-custom-fields-in-django) The problem is, that, if I create a new user through the admin, I get an IntegritiyError on saving "column user_id is not unique". It doesnt seem that the signal is called twice, but i guess the admin is trying to save the profile AFTERWARDS? But I need the creation through signal if I create a new user in other parts of the system!

In my case I have a combobox for domain and one for specialization. If i choose Informatics in the first combobox (domain), I want to fill the second one with a single specialization - "Informatics".   Hello, I want to connect two devices using the GKSession, starting one as a server and the other one as a client. Using this configuration I can't use the GKPeerPickerController. I'm having problems for connecting the two devices: Using only bluetooth: impossible using WiFi: at least there are some data exchange between the devices but no successfully conection. In the interface file I have the GKSessionDelegate GKSession *session; In the implementation, I start the server using this code: session = [[GKSession alloc] initWithSessionID:@"iFood" displayName:nil sessionMode:GKSessionModeClient]; session.delegate = self; session.available = YES; The client starts using this code: session = [[GKSession alloc] initWithSessionID:@"iFood" displayName:nil sessionMode:GKSessionModeServer]; session.delegate = self; session.available = YES; How I can force the use of Bluetooth instead of the WiFi ? • MVC2 DataAnnotations validation with inheritance

  Hi, I have a .NET 2.0 class the properties of which are marked virtual.I need to use the class as a model in a MVC2 application. So, I have created a .NET 3.5 class inheriting from the .NET 2.0 class and added the DataAnnotations attributes to the overriden properties in the new class. A snippet of what I have done is below // .NET 2.0 class public class Customer { private string _firstName = ""; public virtual string FirstName { get { return _firstName; } set { _firstName = value; } } } // .NET 3.5 class public class MVCCustomer : Customer { [Required(ErrorMessage="Firstname is required")] public override string FirstName { get { return base.FirstName; } set { base.FirstName = value; } } } I have used the class as the model for a MVC2 view using the HtmlFor helpers. Serverside validation works correctly but the client side validation does not. Specifically the validation error is not displayed on the page. What am I missing, or is it only possible to do this using buddy classes. Thanks.

  Hi all, I have migrated from log4j to logback and also am transitioning to Glassfish from Jetty. I haven't updated my logback configuration from what I had used with Jetty and consequently am not seeing any logs being written. What logging provider should I use? I'd like to split the longs up into several files as well as control log level for each package. I think I can figure out how to configure them, but should I use Glassfish logging or can I use logback? Walter

Thanks @mattlant This is a dedicated server that's why I'm installing the SMTP manually. EDIT: I use exchange so its a little different, but its called a smart host in exchange, but in plain SMTP service config i think its called something else. Cant remember exactly the setting name. Thank you for pointing me at the Smart host field. Mail is getting delivered now. In the Default SMTP Virtual Server properties, the Delivery tab, click Advanced and fill the "Smart host" field with the address that your provider gives you.   Here is the lay of the land. I have an app that I have created. I uninstalled hibernate, installed app-engine plugin and am using jdo. I am able to create a domain-class but the when I run generate-all I run into the following error.   I have an application that was built with MVC1 and am in the process of updating to MVC2. I have a custom DLL and BLL, of which the model objects are custom business objects that reside in a separate class library. I was using this validation library in MVC1, which worked great. It worked great, but I want to eliminate the extra plugins and use what is available. Rather than use the Enterprise Library validation attributes I have converted to using DataAnnotations and want to use jQuery validation as the client side validation. My questions are: 1) Is the MicrosoftMvcJQueryValidation JS file still required, where do I download. 2) How to you automate the validation to views that do not have models, IE Membership sign in page? 3) How to you add model errors in a custom business layer.   Hi there Im am trying to use the isapi rewrite tool on my web domain to write some basic rules, but am getting a bit confused. My base url is http://forevr-dev.co.uk/musicexplained/index.cfm and every page on the site follows from this base url. For example http://forevr-dev.co.uk/musicexplained/index.cfm/artist/blondie would be the artist page for blondie.. What I am looking for, is a rewrite rule, that would remove the index.cfm from the url, instead leaving http://forevr-dev.co.uk/musicexplained/artist/blondie. I have put the httpd.ini file in my musicexplained folder, under the root of my forevr-dev.co.uk domain, and I am using the following code below, which I used from the coldbox coldfusion framework application examples. RewriteEngine On RepeatLimit 0 RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.cfm/%{REQUEST_URI} [QSA,L] However, when I now go to the new pretty url, I am recieving an error message saying that the page cannot be found, alongside a 404 message.
