• Graphics card not working but integrated graphics is working

  I have a PCIe Geforce 6600 that I've been using in my PC for a couple years now without problems. Recently though I've not been using the PC and had it unplugged. When I when to use it again I accidentally plugged in the monitor to the VGA port for the integrated graphics instead of the 6600 card VGA port and began using it again (I'm currently running Windows 7). I then realized that I had the monitor plugged in wrong and switched the monitor to the 6600 port. Unfortunately I cannot get it to work. When the monitor is plugged in to the 6600 port the monitor will not display anything; not when booting up or in Windows (so I don’t believe the problem is Windows related). I've even tried booting a live CD for Ubuntu to see if that will recognize the card but no luck. Somehow it seems I need to "turn off" the integrated graphics and instruct the PC to use the 6600 card but I'm at a loss for how to do that. I looked high and low in the BIOS for a setting to do this but cannot find anything at all. I have a MSI motherboard and AMI Bios. Any ideas?

• Internet Explorer 8 crashes on Citrix, Windows 2003

  Difficult to decide where this Q fits best. It's server-related and programming-related. But it's a user-problem so I'll put it here, first... I work on a (Delphi) application that uses an Internet Explorer component to show information to the user. It's not a web application, just a desktop application which creates HTML pages to display them within a browser component. Some of the information on these webpages are retrieved from a web server, while other information is provided "live" by the application itself. It works quite well, but it adds an IE-process (child process) next to my application. And this IE process seems to eat a lot of system resources. For normal users, this is not a real problem, so it's not an issue that I want to fix in the code. But one customer of this application uses it with about 100 users on a Citrix/Windows 2003 environment and they complain about problems with the application. IE8 tends to crash, not show, hang or cause other mayhap. Then again, I've warned them that -officially- I won't support any Citrix environment. But I'm willing to help them to find a solution to fix this, and if need be I could make minor changes to my code to help fix this issie. (If possible.) But basically, I need a solution that any user/administrator on this Citrix environment can follow/use. Any ideas on how to resolve this resource problem?

• Need for explanation: NetBIOS over TCP/IP on VMware network adapter disturbs access to network share

  Some time ago nearly all workstations in our team (Windows XP SP2) exhibited intermittend but frequent delays when accessing shares on the network. Typically the first access to a share which hadn't been accessed for some time resulted in a nearly frozen workstation for up to 30 seconds. Then everything started working fine again. Using TCPView from Sysinternals I saw that during this delays there was a connection to the netbios-ssn port on the file server which was in state SYN_SENT. First try: Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP for the intranet network adapter. Problem solved, but I didn't like to manipulate our centrally managed network configuration for the intranet. Second try: Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP only for the VMWare network adapter (VMNet1 used for host only communications). Problem solved again! My questions: Why does NetBIOS over TCP/IP on one network adapter disturb NetBIOS over TCP/IP on another network adapter? Is this problem specific to VMWare network adapters? Has anybody else seen this phenomen? Additional information: VMWare Workstation version 6.0.3 At the time I started seriously analysing the problem it was no more possible to find out what had been changed to our systems at the time the problems started.

• The file STDOLE2.TLB cannot be found or contains a Visual Basic for Applications library that is not

  In Microsoft Project 2007 Professional, If I select Tools Macro Security the message: The file "STDOLE.TLB" cannot be found or contains a Visual Basic for Applications library that is not valid. Verify that the file name is correct, and try again. If the Visual Basic for Applications library is invalid, reinstall Project. I am a software developer and I have developed an Add-In for MS Project using Visual Studio 2005, with all the problems that entails. As such my machine is configured with both Project 2003 Professional and Project 2007 Professional. I only noticed this error when trying to debug my Add-In. The Add-In loads and draws the menu, but when I click on the menu option I receive this error (which is also generated by the Tools Macros Security option mentioned above). I have tried repairing office installations and uninstalling everything and then re-installing everything all over again, but after several hours I still get the same problem. Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this? Some method of finding out what type libraries are registered with STDOLE2.TLB may help if I can identify what is causing the problem. Also a way of manually unregistering the nasty library may be helpful. My machine is configured as follows: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Project 2003 Professional Office 2007 Ultimate Project 2007 Professional Visio 2007 Professional Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Developers Visual Studio 2005 Tools for Office Second edition Visual Studio 2008 Professional I also installed MS Project 2010 Beta to test my Add-In against, but have since uninstalled it. I have a suspicion that this may have caused the problem, but I cannot be sure.

• Why am I getting Network error: 403 Forbidden in firebug for files I am not trying to access?

  QUESTIONs I'd like to know why I am getting Network error: 403 Forbidden in firebug for files that I am not trying to access? is it likely to cause any serious problems on the webserver? how to fix it. Why is my browser trying to access those files in the error message? DETAILS I’m using wampserver 2.2 to access a folder via the browser. The browser is on the same computer as the server. The computer is running windows 7 ultimate. When I view a web folder via my browser hXXp://localhost/folder I can see the folder contents ok but in firebug I get Network error: 403 Forbidden I’m not deliberately trying to access those files in the error msgs. You will notice they are in a completely different folder to the one I am looking at. • How do I stop Sophos anti virus from scanning directories that are under source control

  From googling it seems its well known that SophosAV as well as other AV programs have issues with how they interact and can inhibit source control utilities like TortoiseHG or TortoiseSVN. One solution is to exclude directories under source control from on-access scanning as detailed here on Sophos's support site. There is a corollary article that mentions some issues related to this, namely the need to place multiple entries for exclusions based on the possibility of the location being accessed through the short vs. long name (e.g., Progra~1 vs. "Program Files"). One other twist is I am using a junction to relocate my user directory, C:\Users\Username, to a second hard drive, E:. Since I am not sure how this interacts I have included the source control directory as they are nested in both locations. As a result, I have included the two exclusions for the on-access scanning exclusions (and to be on the safe side on-demand exclusions as well, although this should only come into play when I select a parent directory of the exclusion to be scanned on-demand, but still). You'll notice I have no need to add extra exclusions for those locations based on short vs. long name distinctions. The two exclusion I have then, for both on-access and on-demand scanning exclusions are: C:\Users\Username\source-control-directory E:\source-control-directory However, this does not seem to work as TortoiseHG still lags terribly in response to any request as AV software starts scanning when the directory is accessed via TortoiseHG. I can verify without a doubt that Sophos is causing the problems: I can completely disable on-access scanning. Once this is done TortoiseHG responds very fast to all operations. I cannot leave this disabled obviously, but since the exclusion don't seem to be working, what next?

• Commvault Oracle RMAN Restore to new host

  We use Commvault Simpana 8 and I have a situation where I have backups of an Oracle database on tape that were taken from Host A. Host A suffered a disk failure (lost its raid configuration) and the sys admins are trying to restore it; in the meantime, I'd working to bring the database back up on another host - Host B. I'm running into problems and am trying to sort out the parameters that need to be passed to the Commvault media agent to get this to work. Unfortunately, I do not have access to Commvault support and the backup person is unavailable. Any one have a clue? The backups are there and the media agent reported a successful write when they ran last night. • Word 2007 crashes on Server 2008 R2 terminal services

  We are finding that Word 2007 (with SP2) crashes when used on a Windows 2008 R2 terminal server. Typically it crashes when you click File/Open or File/Save, but not every time. Maybe one time in four, and just to be really confusing, on a test server in my office I can't make it crash. I have just today set up a brand new shiny 2k8 R2 terminal server with as simple a setup as possible, e.g. no anti-virus to confuse things, and we're still seeing crashes. My question is has anyone else seen this, and if so any clues on what's happening? We have a support case open with Microsoft, and the MS support engineer has conceded it's happening, but has so far been unable to find the reason. On possible factor is that all the 2k8 R2 terminal servers I've seen this on have been Hyper-V VMs (running on a 2k8 R2 host). I'm about to put in a physical 2k8 R2 terminal server at the customer where we're seeing the most crashes, in case this is relevant. More news soon. Sorry if this posting seems a bit vague, but this has just bitten us and is causing a lot of pain and sleepless nights :-( If anyone can help I'll be enormously grateful! Update: we've given up and gone back to 2008 pre-R2. Both Office 2003 and 2007 both work fine now. I think there are some problems with TS in R2. Googling doesn't find much, so I thought it was just me. It's reassuring to find that someone else has seen the same problem.

• How-To Configure Weblogic, Agile PLM and an F5 LTM

  Agile, Weblogic, and an F5 walk into a bar ... I've got this Agile PLM v 9.3 Running on WebLogic, two managed servers. An F5 BigIP LTM. We're upgrading from Agile v 9.2.1.4 running on OAS. The problem is that while the Windows client works fine the Java client does not. My setup is identical to one outlined in F5's doc: http://www.f5.com/pdf/deployment-guides/bea-bigip45-dg.pdf When I launch the java client it returns this error "Server is not valid or is unavailable." Oracle claims Agile PLM is setup correctly, but won't comment on the specifics of the load balancer. F5 reports the configuration is correct but can't comment on the specifics of the application. I am merely the guy in a vortex of finger-pointing who wants my application to work. It's that or give up on WLS and move back to OAS. Which has it's own problems but at least we know how it works. Any ideas?

• Performance analytics via DBMS "plugins", or other solution

  I'm working on a systems monitoring product that currently focuses on performance at the system level. We're expanding out to monitoring database systems. Right now we can fetch simple performance information from a selection of DBMS, like connection count, disk IO rates, lock wait times, etc. However, we'd really like a way to measure the execution time of every query going into a DBMS, without requiring the client to implement monitoring in their application code. Some potential solutions might be: Some sort of proxy that sits between client and server. SSL might be an issue here, plus it requires us to reverse engineer and implement the network protocol for each DBMS. Plugin for each DBMS system that automatically records performance information when a query comes in. Other problems include "anonymising" the SQL, i.e. taking something like SELECT * FROM products WHERE price > 20 AND name LIKE "%disk%" and producing SELECT * FROM products WHERE price > ? AND name LIKE "%?%", though this shouldn't be too difficult with some clever parsing and regex. We're mainly focusing on: MySQL MSSQL Oracle Redis mongodb memcached Are there any plugin-style mechanisms we can utilise for any of these? Or is there a simpler solution?

• Installing gitosis and closed port?

  I'm trying to install gitosis on a Server (hosted by OVH and running Ubuntu server 11.04). I've done it a few times and never had any problems. But this time I have something very wired when I simply try to clone gitosis. [root@ovks-1:~/]#git clone git://eagain.net/gitosis.git Cloning into gitosis... eagain.net[0: 208.78.102.120]: errno=Connection refused fatal: unable to connect a socket (Connection refused) zsh: exit 128 git clone git://eagain.net/gitosis.git Based on my searches it looks like the port 9418 is closed. But I don't understand, a server by definition shouldn't have any closed port and I can't find a way to see if they are. So how can I check is a port is open and how can I open it if closed? • Run mplayer from bash in background without extra bash

  I would like to watch a movie with mplayer from bash in the background, like I do with all programs and there has never been any problems: mplayer Kick* & if you'd like to see Kickboxer, for example. But, this doesn't bring up the window, instead it says the process is stopped. I can bring the movie window up with fg mplayer, but then the CLI is unavailable. (This is -- as far as I can see anyway -- equivalent to mplayer Kick*). I'm able to work around the problem like this: $(mplayer Kick*) & But then I get two extra bashes (I see this with ps). It is not really a problem as those closes down when I Alt-F4 the movie, but it is still undesirable. I guess I'm most annoyed with having to type that extra stuff, so if you come up with an alias or function, that would be OK, to. Although, it wouldn't hurt me to learn what's going on. Edit: Hm, it doesn't even seem to work the way I said. The "work"around is not reliable. Forget about it.

• mod perl in apache 2.2 not parsing perl scripts

  Hi, I've set up a fresh Apache 2.2.15 server on windows server 2008 R2 with mod_perl (mod perl v2.0.4 / perl v5.10.1). Mod_perl and Perl 5.10 has been installed and loaded without problems. However, despite my configuration, the mod_perl module is failing to recognize and execute my .pl file, instead opting to print out the perl source instead. What did I do wrong, and how do I make perl process my pl script instead of sending it to the client?   Is there any way to configure IIS 7.5 to perform URL rewrites to different application pools on the same site without running into a 403.18 error? We're using Helicon ISAPI Rewrite 3 on IIS 6 and it's working like a charm. The root-level "application" is running under it's own application pool, and on IIS 6 we have no problems doing URL rewrites from that application pool to any one of the other four application pools. But when I copy the same server configuration information over to IIS 7.5 the URL rewrites to any of the other application pools fail with a "403.18 -- Forbidden" error. The weird bit is that the IIS 6 is not (at least as far as I can tell, by looking at the site Service configuration dialog) running under IIS 5 emulation mode, so somehow the rewrites aren't throwing 403.18 errors. So something must be different... but whatever it is, I sure haven't been able to figure it out. Btw, we're not married to Helicon ISAPI Rewrite. If there's another way to preserve our current rewrite configuration rules using another module or method I'd be more than happy to use it.

• Mac OS X 10.6 Setup for Apache/MySQL/Perl

  I just got a new Mac and have been trying to setup a local development environment for my perl applications for a few days now with no luck. I'm getting no where fast so I hope someone else who has done this successfully could help. I started by installing MAMP which I thought would take care of everything for me but unfortunately it doesn't take care of some important perl modules. I used CPAN to install all our required modules except that it seems DBD::mysql doesn't install correctly through CPAN. • Why does my Intel HDA onboard sound card not have a "Mix" device / channel?

  I want to be able to record what my sound card outputs on the speakers / headphones. This question is all over the interwebs again and again, and there seem to be two outcomes: in your selection of audio input devices, there's a device called "Stereo Mix", or similar, which is the "loopback" device for audio. Choose that in your recording tool and you're done. there's no such device and only speculative posts about why that may be. Now, I'm using ALSA and an Intel HDA chipset on my mainboard under Kubuntu Karmic. I have some 5-10 output channels and "Mic", "Front Mic" and "Line" for input. All of those are available in KMix, Audacity and other software. No "loopback" / "Mix" / whatever. Do I have to get some driver / kernel module set up ALSA in some way set up my system configuration in some way use a software solution (such as JACK) I had a look at JACK, and found it rather hard to understand, it's either an expert tool or just clumsy, I couldn't say. At least, I wasn't able to figure out how to achieve what I wanted. One of my problems seems to be that I don't understand where and how the mixing happens. Are there sound cards which just aren't able to do it? Why does the sound card matter at all, since I could in theory grab the data stream at some point before it goes to the hardware, right?

• Windows 2008 Terminal Services "Easy Print" and Matrix Printers

  Server: Windows 2008 Server Standard SP2 with "Terminal Services" role Clients: Windows XP SP3 + .NET 3.5 Framework SP1 + Remote Desktop Client 7.0 We are using "Easy Print" feature which allows programs running on server to "see" printers installed on client machines. Everything works fine, EXCEPT when we send a text-only output to a dot-matrix printer. In this case, the printer only outputs a blank page. At first, we had problems with the error "Windows Presentation Foundation Terminal Server Print W has encountered a problem and needs to close." but this was fixed by replacing TsWpfWrp.exe with the one from Vista SP1 as suggested here. But now, we only get a blank page! Every other (graphical) document we sent to printer works 100%. We also tried to use the "Generic text-only" driver, but the result is same. Now we are trying to change parameters like print processor on "advanced" tab from printer driver to see if something happen. But this is just guessing and we really don't know what to try anymore. The problem appears to be on Easy Print driver, but we found almost no resources about it. Any tips are welcome.

  I have a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pa 1538 laptops and installed Ubuntu 10.04 on it (Kernel 2.6.32). Main problem is that the fans of the notebook are always on even when the temperature is low. Another problem is that the display brightness can not be adjusted. Since some years I use Dell laptops and never experienced any ACPI problems so I thought that it is no longer needed to fix ACPI tables but now I have this crap of a laptop and I think I have to do it. Unfortunately I need some help repairing the DSDT. • Dynamic DNS updates for Linux and Mac OS X machines with a Windows DNS server

  My network has a Windows machine running Server 2008 R2 which provides DHCP and DNS. I'm not particularly familiar with Windows domains, but the domain is set to home.local and that is the DNS domain name provided with DHCP leases. Everything works fine for Windows machines, they get the lease and update the server with their hostname and the server creates a DNS records for windowshostname.home.local. I am having problems obtaining the same functionality on Linux (Debian) and Mac OS X (Mountain Lion) machines. They receive DHCP just fine, but DNS entries are not being created on the server for them. On the Mac OS X machine, hostname gives an output of machostname.local, and on the Linux machine hostname --fqdn also gives an output of linuxhostname.local. I'm assuming that the server is not creating DNS entries because the domain does not match that of the server (home.local). I don't want to statically configure these machines to be part of the home.local domain, I just want them to pick it up from DHCP and be able to have entries in the DNS server. How should I go about doing this?

  I have a particular problem with subversion. Environment: subversion (1.6.12dfsg-6), apache2 (2.2.16-6+squeeze7) + mod dav_svn. I can't create a directory named "mysql" or "testmysql" or add and commit a file named "mysql.txt" in my repository. There are many references to "subversion PROPSET 403 forbidden" problems in google and so on. But I can use all functions of subversion. I can also create a directory named "hugo" or "test". My repository works properly. Only "mysql" doesn't work. • Goldtouch USB Keyboard reverses keystrokes in fast typing -- expected?

  I am running into an odd keyboard problem: some key combinations end up reversed (e.g. "pl" ends up being emitted as "lp") when I'm typing quickly. The problematic ones are the key combos I hit with two adjacent fingers on my right hand-- in other words, the combos I can hit the fastest. No idea how fast is "fastest", but I guess around 50-150 msecs gap between them. I'm trying to track down whether this represents a failed keyboard, an inherent limitation of my Goldtouch USB keyboards, or a software problem on my Windows 7 Lenovo T500. I use a PS/2 version of the same Goldtouch keyboard at home with no problems. I've tried another USB keyboard with my laptop and can't repro the problem. I've also used this keyboard on other laptops without a problem. According to this SU thread, USB keyboards have higher latency than PS/2 keyboards-- up to 30 msecs. I find it hard to imagine that I can type key combos faster than 50 msecs, probably more like 100-150. Anyone encountered this problem with this or another keyboard? If so, how did you fix it? Any idea if there's a "keyboard log" or some way to diagnose the problem inside Windows?

• Bind ADFS 2.0 service to a specific IP address

  I have one server with ADFS-2.0 and a few websites on it. One of the websites is Dynamics CRM which listens on a specific IP address on port 443. Dynamics CRM provides a metadata file for configuration purposes which could be used to configure a relaying party trust with ADFS. It is accessible with the URL https://auth.contoso.com/FederationMetadata/2007-06/federationmetadata.xml The problem is that ADFS-2.0 installs a service which registers following urlacl https://+:443/FederationMetadata/2007-06/ This means the result of accessing the URL https://auth.contoso.com/FederationMetadata/2007-06/federationmetadata.xml is the metadata file of ADFS, not the one of Dynamics CRM. I've tried to delete the default urlacl and added (one of them at a time) https://192.168.1.2:443/FederationMetadata/2007-06/ https://adfs.mydomain.com:443/FederationMetadata/2007-06/ but neither of them worked. Instead the ADFS-service failed to startup complete. Is there any way to bind this service to a IP address? At the moment I see only two alternatives Bind the service to a non standard port. This leads to problems because this means that also the ADFS website has to use a non-standard HTTPS-port. Install ADFS-2.0 on a different server (this is my favorite alternative - however it is not possible in every situation...)

• Cannot run "Automation Anywhere" exe files from console (session 0) on Windows Server 2003 64 bit

  I have a simple exe created from an Automation Anywhere task that displays a message box saying hello world. I created this simple exe just for debugging the following issue. When I log in to the console (session 0), and run the Automation Anywhere created executable, it starts to run the task, it shows up in the applications and processes list in the task manager and it shows the two "loading..." windows briefly on the screen, just like normal. But after that, nothing happens... the "hello world" message does not show up. The exe is done and is removed from the application and process list in the task manager. The user I am logged in as, has admin rights and the machine uses "autologin" to automatically log in using this profile when it starts up. If I right click on the exe and "run as" another admin user, the exe runs properly, showing the "hello world" message. Also, if I log into the server in a new session, with the original user (the one that has the problems in session 0), and then run the exe, it runs properly and shows the "hello world". It works fine in any session other than the console session. There is something about the console session that is causing the exe not to run properly... even though it does appear to start running the exe. I should also mention that everything was working fine until Monday at midnight, after which none of the executables could be run successfully. Nothing was changed on the server and no updates were installed. I have since installed windows updates, but that didn't change anything. Looking for some advice on how to get these executables working in the console session again. Thanks!
