• Connecting SceneBuilder edited FXML to Java code

  Recently I had to answer several questions regarding how to connect an UI built with the JavaFX SceneBuilder 1.0 Developer Preview to Java Code. So I figured out that a short overview might be helpful. But first, let me state the obvious. What is FXML? To make it short, FXML is an XML based declaration format for JavaFX. JavaFX provides an FXML loader which will parse FXML files and from that construct a graph of Java object. It may sound complex when stated like that but it is actually quite simple. Here is an example of FXML file, which instantiate a StackPane and puts a Button inside it: -- <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <?import java.lang.*?> <?import java.util.*?> <?import javafx.scene.control.*?> <?import javafx.scene.layout.*?> <?import javafx.scene.paint.*?> <StackPane prefHeight="150.0" prefWidth="200.0" xmlns:fx="http://javafx.com/fxml"> <children> <Button mnemonicParsing="false" text="Button" /> </children> </StackPane> ... and here is the code I would have had to write if I had chosen to do the same thing programatically: import javafx.scene.control.*; import javafx.scene.layout.*; ... final Button button = new Button("Button"); button.setMnemonicParsing(false); final StackPane stackPane = new StackPane(); stackPane.setPrefWidth(200.0); stackPane.setPrefHeight(150.0); stacPane.getChildren().add(button); As you can see - FXML is rather simple to understand - as it is quite close to the JavaFX API. So OK FXML is simple, but why would I use it?Well, there are several answers to that - but my own favorite is: because you can make it with SceneBuilder. What is SceneBuilder? In short SceneBuilder is a layout tool that will let you graphically build JavaFX user interfaces by dragging and dropping JavaFX components from a library, and save it as an FXML file. SceneBuilder can also be used to load and modify JavaFX scenegraphs declared in FXML. Here is how I made the small FXML file above: Start the JavaFX SceneBuilder 1.0 Developer Preview In the Library on the left hand side, click on 'StackPane' and drag it on the content view (the white rectangle) In the Library, select a Button and drag it onto the StackPane on the content view. In the Hierarchy Panel on the left hand side - select the StackPane component, then invoke 'Edit > Trim To Selected' from the menubar That's it - you can now save, and you will obtain the small FXML file shown above. Of course this is only a trivial sample, made for the sake of the example - and SceneBuilder will let you create much more complex UIs. So, I have now an FXML file. But what do I do with it? How do I include it in my program? How do I write my main class? Loading an FXML file with JavaFX Well, that's the easy part - because the piece of code you need to write never changes. You can download and look at the SceneBuilder samples if you need to get convinced, but here is the short version: Create a Java class (let's call it 'Main.java') which extends javafx.application.Application In the same directory copy/save the FXML file you just created using SceneBuilder. Let's name it "simple.fxml" Now here is the Java code for the Main class, which simply loads the FXML file and puts it as root in a stage's scene. /* * Copyright (c) 2012, Oracle and/or its affiliates. Now I only have to use my favorite IDE to compile the class and run it. But... wait... what does it do? Well nothing. It just displays a button in the middle of a window. There's no logic attached to it. So how do we do that? How can I connect this button to my application logic? Here is how: Connection to code First let's define our application logic. Since this post is only intended to give a very brief overview - let's keep things simple. Let's say that the only thing I want to do is print a message on System.out when the user clicks on my button. To do that, I'll need to register an action handler with my button. And to do that, I'll need to somehow get a handle on my button. I'll need some kind of controller logic that will get my button and add my action handler to it. So how do I get a handle to my button and pass it to my controller? Once again - this is easy: I just need to write a controller class for my FXML. With each FXML file, it is possible to associate a controller class defined for that FXML. That controller class will make the link between the UI (the objects defined in the FXML) and the application logic. To each object defined in FXML we can associate an fx:id. The value of the id must be unique within the scope of the FXML, and is the name of an instance variable inside the controller class, in which the object will be injected. Since I want to have access to my button, I will need to add an fx:id to my button in FXML, and declare an @FXML variable in my controller class with the same name. In other words - I will need to add fx:id="myButton" to my button in FXML: -- <Button fx:id="myButton" mnemonicParsing="false" text="Button" /> and declare @FXML private Button myButton in my controller class @FXML private Button myButton; // value will be injected by the FXMLLoader Let's see how to do this. Add an fx:id to the Button object Load "simple.fxml" in SceneBuilder - if not already done In the hierarchy panel (bottom left), or directly on the content view, select the Button object. Open the Properties sections of the inspector (right panel) for the button object At the top of the section, you will see a text field labelled fx:id. Enter myButton in that field and validate. Associate a controller class with the FXML file Still in SceneBuilder, select the top root object (in our case, that's the StackPane), and open the Code section of the inspector (right hand side) At the top of the section you should see a text field labelled Controller Class. In the field, type simple.SimpleController. This is the name of the class we're going to create manually. If you save at this point, the FXML will look like this: -- <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <?import java.lang.*?> <?import java.util.*?> <?import javafx.scene.control.*?> <?import javafx.scene.layout.*?> <?import javafx.scene.paint.*?> <StackPane prefHeight="150.0" prefWidth="200.0" xmlns:fx="http://javafx.com/fxml" fx:controller="simple.SimpleController"> <children> <Button fx:id="myButton" mnemonicParsing="false" text="Button" /> </children> </StackPane> As you can see, the name of the controller class has been added to the root object: fx:controller="simple.SimpleController" Coding the controller class In your favorite IDE, create an empty SimpleController.java class. Now what does a controller class looks like? What should we put inside? Well - SceneBuilder will help you there: it will show you an example of controller skeleton tailored for your FXML. In the menu bar, invoke View > Show Sample Controller Skeleton. A popup appears, displaying a suggestion for the controller skeleton: copy the code displayed there, and paste it into your SimpleController.java: /** * Sample Skeleton for "simple.fxml" Controller Class * Use copy/paste to copy paste this code into your favorite IDE **/ package simple; import java.net.URL; import java.util.ResourceBundle; import javafx.fxml.FXML; import javafx.fxml.Initializable; import javafx.scene.control.Button; public class SimpleController implements Initializable { @FXML // fx:id="myButton" private Button myButton; // Value injected by FXMLLoader @Override // This method is called by the FXMLLoader when initialization is complete public void initialize(URL fxmlFileLocation, ResourceBundle resources) { assert myButton != null : "fx:id=\"myButton\" was not injected: check your FXML file 'simple.fxml'."; // initialize your logic here: all @FXML variables will have been injected } } Note that the code displayed by SceneBuilder is there only for educational purpose: SceneBuilder does not create and does not modify Java files. This is simply a hint of what you can use, given the fx:id present in your FXML file. You are free to copy all or part of the displayed code and paste it into your own Java class. Now at this point, there only remains to add our logic to the controller class. Quite easy: in the initialize method, I will register an action handler with my button: () { @Override public void handle(ActionEvent event) { System.out.println("That was easy, wasn't it?"); } }); ... -- ... // initialize your logic here: all @FXML variables will have been injected myButton.setOnAction(new EventHandler<ActionEvent>() { @Override public void handle(ActionEvent event) { System.out.println("That was easy, wasn't it?"); } }); ... That's it - if you now compile everything in your IDE, and run your application, clicking on the button should print a message on the console! Summary What happens is that in Main.java, the FXMLLoader will load simple.fxml from the jar/classpath, as specified by 'FXMLLoader.load(Main.class.getResource("simple.fxml"))'. When loading simple.fxml, the loader will find the name of the controller class, as specified by 'fx:controller="simple.SimpleController"' in the FXML. Upon finding the name of the controller class, the loader will create an instance of that class, in which it will try to inject all the objects that have an fx:id in the FXML. Thus, after having created '<Button fx:id="myButton" ... />', the FXMLLoader will inject the button instance into the '@FXML private Button myButton;' instance variable found on the controller instance. This is because The instance variable has an @FXML annotation, The name of the variable exactly matches the value of the fx:id Finally, when the whole FXML has been loaded, the FXMLLoader will call the controller's initialize method, and our code that registers an action handler with the button will be executed. For a complete example, take a look at the HelloWorld SceneBuilder sample. Also make sure to follow the SceneBuilder Get Started guide, which will guide you through a much more complete example. Of course, there are more elegant ways to set up an Event Handler using FXML and SceneBuilder. There are also many different ways to work with the FXMLLoader. • Visual Studio 2012 crashes everytime I try to debug with error CLR20r3

  Everytime I try to debug one of my apps I get the below error message. Anyone have any ideas? I tried running Visual Studio in safe mode but I get the same thing. I also tried to repair the install and completely reinstall it with no luck :(. • CFBundleVersion error even though new version is higher

  When trying to upload an upgrade binary to iTunes Connect, I am getting this error message even though I have updated CFBundleVersion in my info.plist file to a higher value (and checked the package contents after building it to be sure it copied over). I have already successfully submitted a different app upgrade by doing this same method, but for whatever reason it won't work this time. Any insights or is this an iTunes bug? The binary you uploaded was invalid. The key CFBundleVersion in the Info.plist file must contain a higher version than that of the previously uploaded version.

  I am trying to add a new member to our DFS topology. We have 3 DCs (VMs - VMware) running Windows server 2012, two servers are located in or Primary site and the third at our DR site. Currently the two servers at our primary site are currently replicating DFS (full mesh) and are working fine. I have tried several times to add the third DC to our DFS topology, every time i configure the replication path e.g E:\MSI and click ok the MMC snap in crashes.   I'm trying to use the SmugFig SmugMug API on Android. It was designed for J2SE I would imagine, so I'm not sure it will even work on Android, but I figured it was worth trying as opposed to trying to create my own API. When I load the project though, I get the following error: Conversion to Dalvik format failed: Unable to execute dex: null It doesn't say what package it fails on, just "Android Packaging Problem", but it did not do this before I added SmugFig and it's dependency JARS to the build path. Where should I look? Or does this mainly me that it just won't work with those libraries?

I have stripped the application down to the minimum, as shown below, to try and isolate the issue. The two classes tempConvertSoap and TempConvet() are generated by wsimport. I am also using several libraries from javax.jws.. and javax.xml.ws.. Of course the application compiles without error and loads correctly. I know the application is running becouse my "try/catch" routine is successfully catching the error and printing it out. • Prevent Python from caching the imported modules

  While developing a largeish project (split in several files and folders) in Python with IPython, I run into the trouble of cached imported modules. The problem is that instructions import module only reads the module once, even if that module has changed! So each time I change something in my package, I have to quit and restart IPython. Painful. Is there any way to properly force reloading some modules? Or, better, to somehow prevent Python from caching them? I tried several approaches, but none works. In particular I run into really, really weird bugs, like some modules or variables mysteriously becoming equal to None... The only sensible resource I found is Reloading Python modules, from pyunit, but I have not checked it. I would like something like that. A good alternative would be for IPython to restart, or restart the Python interpreter somehow. So, if you develop in Python, what solution have you found to this problem?

I looked all over the java.sun.com site as well as the GlassFish wiki, but came up empty. I'd like a src.zip or folder like Sun delivers with Java JDKs. • SSIS Configuration error: Cannot retrieve configuration table schema

  I'm trying to add a simple configuration to a SSIS package, of type SQL Server, so stored in a table. At the end of the wizard, when it goes to try and write a new row to the nominated table to store the configuration it fails with the error: TITLE: Microsoft Visual Studio Could not complete wizard actions. Cannot retrieve configuration table schema. (Microsoft.DataTransformationServices.Wizards) I can't seem to resolve this. The configuration connection has full permissions on the table, and it sees it and can read from it as it reports there is no current data for the filter I provide. It just wont write to it. A Google search of the error message above in quotes returns literally no hits! Any suggestions? Glenn

• Installing Visual Studio 2003 on Windows 7 64-bit

  My team is currently supporting a 1.1 app and we are installing VS.NET 2003 on Windows 7. We haven't had any issues on the 32-bit machines, but FrontPage Server Extensions are failing to install on my 64-bit machine. Others on the Interwebs say that they have done this successfully, so I wanted to know if anyone here has and if they know of a solution. The specific issue is that FPSE (to clarify, I'm installing "FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions for IIS 7.0") fails to install correctly. In EventViewer I get the error: Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions: Error #3004f Message: Unable to read configuration information for Microsoft Internet Information Server: ImpersonateLoggedOnUser Error. I've looded for errors with ImpersonateLoggedOnUser on 64-bit and did find a case where it fails on 64-bit when UAC is turned off (which I did have it off). I turned UAC back on, ran command prompt as administrator, and ran msiexec on the FPSE package. Still no dice. My program should learn to classify from the training data (BTW which contain answer for 30 questions each in new column, each record in new line the last column will be diagnosis 0 or 1, in the testing part of data diagnosis column will be empty - data set contain about 1000 records) and then make predictions in testing part of data :/ I've never done anything similar so I'll appreciate any advice or information about solution to similar problem. The data is populating from the cursor correctly (I see the list filling with text rows), but I'm not able to see the actual text in the rows - all I see are empty rows. • Restarting Tomcat from Tomcat itself

  Hello, is it possible to restart Tomcat6 by executing a JSP? This because I would like to deploy the changes of an application by doing it remotely using the webserver. The deploy script is written in bash and it checkouts the latest version from the svn, then package it as a war, then copy it in /webapps/ while adding some libs. If I execute it from a JSP (for example by using System.execute(..) will it cause problems? The fact is that the script itself is something like: /etc/init.d/tomcat6 stop # do things /etc/init.d/tomcat6 start so I don't think it would work.. is there a way to execute a stand-alone process from inside tomcat?

• Netbeans autocomplete unusably slow/nonfunctional in Netbeans 6.8 Latest

  I'm running a 2.5Ghz C2D with 4GB RAM, so there's no reason hardwre-wise why Netbeans should be peforming so poorly. Using the latest Netbeans release and grails plugin (installed via the plugin manager), automcomplete is either too slow to use or doesn't work at all. If I'm within a class, and I attempt to auto-complete a field, it takes 3-4 seconds before being able to finish the field name. If I'm in a class of the same package (like a unit test), I can't get any of the properties to appear on the object. Furthermore, it says "Scanning in progress" for a full 5-6 seconds before pulling up the method list. Is there a way to fix this behavior?

• VS2010, MSDeploy and declaration of parameters

  Hi I'm trying to deploy an ASP.NET MVC 2 app using MSDeploy. I use VS2010 to generate the package as a ZIP. Inside that ZIP is a parameters.xml file that declares the parameters that I can set. I want to be able to set more parameters, using the auto-generated deploy.cmd file like this: MySite.deploy.cmd "-setParam:name='IIS Web Application Name',value=MySite" "-setParam:name=IisVirtualDirectoryPhysicalPath,value=C:\inetpub\MySite" "-setParam:name=httpBinding,value=*:80:www.mysite.dk" That works fine, except for the httpBinding param. That is because that parameter is not declared inside the parameters.xml file that is added to the ZIP container. I could go and add that parameter declaration manually, but isn't there a way to do it from the command line and have it declare parameters I have in another XML file?

  I've just started playing with The Django Form Validation Framework on Google App Engine (from google.appengine.ext.db import djangoforms) and I got stuck googling how to customize forms using it. I was wondering whether the following are possible using the package: Add help texts beside/below input/select fields and textareas (e.g. "This field is required", "Example: qwerty123") Add/modify attributes for the input/select fields and textareas (e.g. adding the following attributes: class, id, name, maxlength, minlength, etc.) Add custom validations like checking whether a particular field should be unique or checking a value against a regular expression Modify the error messages Add another column to the table generated by the form Also note that djangoforms.ModelForm is different from django.forms.Form.

• iPhone SDK "loading" on Titanium Developer

  Hi, I have tried this question on the site of Titanium and several tweets to their account, but they either ignore me or refuse to answer. I want to start using their framework, but for some reason the iPhone SDK is always "loading" when in the "TEST & PACKAGE" tab. Have you guys found a fix for this? I have: Snow Leopard 10.6.3 Titanium Developer 1.2.1 iPhone SDK 3.2 All the certificates "blah blah" from Apple because I am able to test and deploy apps on my device using XCode. Help please :)
