• Changing the default program for an application

  I have installed MonoDevelop and after that Wine, but when I want to open an EXE file and then double click on it, it always runs with the Mono runtime, and if I want to run it with Wine, I should right click on it and choose Wine. Well, in properties and in Open With there isn't Wine that choose it for the default application... I have this problem for all types of applications and files. When the software you want to run is in the right click application (Open With), I can't choose it in properties for the default. In fact, I can't find it in properties, because it is in open with option in right click... What should I do to fix this problem? I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal), 32 bit.

• Interfacing the payment systems

  Hello all. I'm a complete newbie to using online payment systems for web projects, and can't really think of where to start. Let's assume that web system in question needs to generate some income online, and the business idea/functionality is in place, while organizing cash flow is the only unsolved problem. Points of interest are how the custom developed software interfaces to payment systems, and how the resulting income is available to the owner. I do understand that there are probably hundreds of systems out there, but to be more specific on which of them suit, I'd have to know how they work, and that's where I don't feel like understanding much.   I'm a developer negotiating compensation for a commercialized version of some data analysis software I wrote (see my profile if you like). This is a completely new experience for me. I want per-unit royalties, but I don't have the slightest idea what the standard amount is. I also want to be compensated for my time, so that's an upfront R&D cost for the company I'm negotiating with, but distribution cost to them is presumably virtually nothing once it's out there. But then there's support costs. What sorts of deals have you folks negotiated?

• SEO on an existing platform

  I'm given the task to increase user visits and conversions on for a recruitment website. Conversions would be interested job seekers submitting their CV. The manager would first like to increase the organic search results and optimize the website before starting with targeted campaigns. The problem is, they are using a proprietary recruitment software platform which I can barely add changes to. For example, the url's all look like dynamic url's without any semantic meaning and the markup is almost completely build automatically by that platform. I'm also confident that the lack of submitted CV's is due to a bad user experience of the website (no incentives or clear CTA to register) Besides optimizing the static texts and page titles, is there anything I can do? • Are python's cryptographic modules good enough?

  I mean, say you were writing professional grade software that would involve sensitive client information. (Take this in the context of me being an amateur programmer.) Would you use hlib and hmac? Are they good enough to secure data? Or would you write something fancier by hand? Edit: In context of those libraries containing more or less the best hashing algorithms in the world, I guess it's silly to ask if you'd "write something fancier." What I'm really asking here is whether it's enough on its own.

• .NET Reflector is no longer free - how does everyone feel about this? [closed]

  The upcoming version of .NET Reflector, coming in March, will no longer have a free version. .NET Reflector started out as a free utility written by programmer Lutz Roeder and quickly became fairly indispensable to a lot of programmers. After about four years he sold it to RedGate software, who has maintained a free version ever since, as well as a "Pro" version about a year ago which adds capabilities and starts at $99/seat. The new version will no longer have a free version, will be $35 for the non-Pro versions, and the existing free versions will still work until the end of May. On the one hand it's annoying that the existing free versions will die and obviously I'd prefer there be a free version going forward. On the other hand I respect where RedGate is coming from and the cost for a license isn't prohibitively expensive. Plus it may encourage more frequent updates. EDIT: I originally said it was $35 for everyone but according to this FAQ there's still going to be a Pro version.

  i am currently learning Java and PHP as I have some projects from university, which require me to apply both languages. Specifically, a Java GUI application, connecting to a MySQL database and a web application that will be implemented in PHP/MySQL. I have started learning the MVC pattern, Struts, Spring and I am also learning PHP with zend. My first question is: How can I find employment as a programmer/software engineer? The reason I ask is because I have sent my CV into many companys, but all of them stated that I required work experience. I really need some guidance on how to improve my career opportunites. At present, I work on my own and haven't worked in collaboration with anyone on a particular project. I'm assuming most people create projects and submit them along with their CVs. My second question is: Everyone has to make a start from somewhere, but what if this somewhere doesn't come? What do I need to do to create the circumstances where I can easily progress forward? • How does session middleware generally verify browser sessions?

  I've been using session middleware to build web apps for years: from PHP's built-in session handling layer to node's connect session middleware. However, I've never tried (or needed) to roll my own session handling layer. How would one go about it? What sort of checks are necessary to provide at least some modicum of security against HTTP session highjacking? I figure setting a cookie with a token to keep track of the session, and then perhaps some check to see that the originating IP address of the session doesn't change and that the client browser software remains consistent. The comments include: Redistributions of source code must retain the above copyright notice, this list of conditions and the following disclaimer. * Redistributions in binary form must reproduce the above copyright notice, this list of conditions and the following disclaimer in the documentation and/or other materials provided with the distribution. Is using this in my web site "redistribution?" If I minify this to conserve bandwidth, I assume it will strip all comments. If the answer to #1 is yes, doesn't that imply I'm legally not allowed to minify it? (That would stink, since I was planning to auto-minify all JS as part of the deploy process.)

• Unable to connect via Mobile Broadband - But its detected - 12.10

  Previously (on ubuntu 12.04), i will just connect my 3G mobile broadband modem, and will start browsing after enabling it and going through the setup process. However, on the 12.10, I'm able to setup my connection, but it doesn't connect to the internet. All settings are okay. I've tried two different network providers in Ghana, still, i'm not able to connect. At times, i'm notified that, its connected to the "home network" of the service provider, but disconnects in less than 10 seconds. Is it supposed to be a bug? I've been reading about the wvdial, but I'm wondering something that used to be possible by "default" in Ubuntu should now be "configured" via a software. Help!

Computers used to (still do I guess, somewhere) use magnetic tape reels to store data. There was a plastic accessory you could attach to a tape reel called a "write-enable ring". If the tape had such a ring, the tape drive allowed writing to the tape... if not, it only allowed read access. Why was the choice to design the system in this way? Why not have a "write protect ring" instead, with the opposite effect?

  I'm a graphic design student hoping to pursue a career as a video game artist. However, I want to do some game development as a hobby. I'd like to develop games for the desktop or mobile phones. The only programming experience I have is that I took an intro to programming with java class in which I learned how to make web applets using java's swing library. It was awful. I think the only things I took from the class was what OOP is and how to work with variables and data types and some methods. I also learned some actionscript myself which was fun unfortunately my flash tutorial expired and it's too expensive to buy;( What I was looking to do is learn one programming language and build a game with it without having to go through so many hoops and with minimum cost. If it's possible. I would love to learn C++, but I read it's not best for a beginning programmer. What programming languages or maybe software kits/platforms would you recommend?

• How do I get one monitor on top of the other in Ubuntu 10.10?

  I'm using a laptop and a monitor (wall mounted) over my laptop. I would like to reflect this physical hardware setup in my software screen setup. So that I can move my mouse upward, out of my laptop screen and use the monitor on the wall. I have been searching for a solution for a while, and I hope somone can help me out. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 "out of the box". Side by side screen setups works just fine, over/under is doesn't work.

• Which VCS is more applicable for our workflow?

  Currently we have code stored on a shared network drive and do not use any kind of VCS. The code stored on our shared network drive is always being backed up. We would like to keep things as close to they are now as possible, while using some kind of VCS software. I am envisioning a centralized workflow with each developer having a local copy of the code on his/her machine. We don't do any branching or working offline. Typically when we spin off a new version we would just copy the current working directory to a new directory. I believe we would continue doing this and just create a repository for the new version. I would rather not get into an argument over which VCS is better, just hoping to get some opinions for which is best suited and most applicable for what we are trying to do.

• I can't click on some things and other problems

  I have some issues with my Ubuntu 12.04 . When I open Ubuntu Software Center, the program opens and than just disappears just when it is opened. My Ubuntu 12.04 won't install any updates because of this error in the picture. Worst of all: I can't click on anything except for programs that from Ubuntu: for example I can't browse the internet via Firefox or Chromium... I can't click on folders. I can't click on things in my Thunderbird mail program. But I can click on Update manager for example... It is just clicking that doesn't work, when I try 'clicking' something with using the tab-button and enter I can click on something - in every case. But that's just too annoying to do. Oh sorry guys I had some screenshots that illustrate the problems, but I can't get them off the 'problem pc ubuntu 12.04' about which I am talking... it's so sad

The goal is to monitor incoming bug reports and reduce them, allow never ending features and get ready for scaling 10x.
