Using Subdomains for Newly Regional Company

The company I work for is expanding their business to new territories. I've got a lot of stabilization to do in the region/state where we're one of the most well known companies of our kind. Currently, we have 3 distinct product lines which are currently distinguished by 3 separate URLS. This is affecting the user flow of our site, so we'd like to clean it up before launching our products into the various regions. The business has decided to grow into 5 new states (one state consisting of one county only) — none of which will feature all 3 products. Our homebase state is the only one that will have all 3 products this year. My initial thought was to use subdomains to separate out the regions, that way we could use a canonical tag to stabilize the root domain (which would feature home state content, and support content for all regions), and remove us from potential duplicate content penalization. Our product content will be nearly identical across the regions for the first year. I second guessed myself by thinking that it was perhaps better to use a "[product].root/region" URL instead. And I'm currently stuck by wondering if it was not better to build out subdomains for products and regions...using one modifier or the other as a funnel/branding page into the other. For instance, user lands on "region.root.com" and sees exactly what products we offer in that region. Basically, a tailored landing page. Meanwhile the bulk of the product content would actually live under "product.root.com/region/page". My head is spinning. And while searching for similar questions I also bumped into reference of another tag meant to be used in some similar cases to mine. I feel like there's a lot of risks involved in this subdomain strategy, but I also can't help but see the benefits in the user flow.

SQL RDBMS : one query or multiple calls

After looking around the internet, I decided to create DAOs that returned objects (POJOs) to the calling business logic function/method. For example: a Customer object with a Address reference would be split in the RDBMS into two tables; Customer and ADDRESS. The CustomerDAO would be in charge of joining the data from the two tables and create both an Address POJO and Customer POJO adding the address to the customer object. Finally return the fulll Customer POJO. Simple, however, now i am at a point where i need to join three or four tables and each representing an attribute or list of attributes for the resulting POJO. The sql will include a group by but i will still result with multiple rows for the same pojo, because some of the tables are joining a one to many relationship. My app code will now have to loop through all the rows trying to figure out if the rows are the same with different attributes or if the record should be a new POJO. Should I continue to create my daos using this technique or break up my Pojo creation into multiple db calls to make the code easier to understand and maintain?

Minimizing use of paper

I've recently faced this problem in a dynamic programming curriculum, and I honestly have no idea about how to determine the appropriate state. You're given N (1 <= N <= 70) paragraphs and M (1 <= M <= N) figures. Each paragraph i requires PL_i (1 <= PL_i <= 100) lines and references at most one figure. Each figure is referenced exactly once (i.e., no two paragraphs can reference the same figure, and for each figure there's a paragraph that references it.) Each figure requires PF_i (1 <= PF_i <= 100) lines. The task is to distribute those figures and paragraphs on paper in the order they're given, where one paper fits for L lines at most. No paragraph or figure is too large to fit on one paper. If a paragraph x placed on paper x_p references a figure y then y must be placed on either the paper x_p - 1 or x_p or x_p + 1. We have to find the minimum number of lines (and thus pages) to allocate in order to distribute all the figures and paragraphs. Any help would be extremely appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Tips for Making this Code Testable [migrated]

So I'm writing an abstraction layer that wraps a telephony RESTful service for sending text messages and making phone calls. I should build this in such a way that the low-level provider, in this case Twilio, can be easily swapped without having to re-code the higher level interactions. I'm using a package that is pre-built for Twilio and so I'm thinking that I need to create a wrapper interface to standardize the interaction between the Twilio service package and my application. Let us pretend that I cannot modify this pre-built package. How can I get better at explaining complex software processes to developers?

I'm really struggling with my software specs. I am not a professional programmer but enjoy doing it for fun and made some software that I want to sell later but I'm not happy with the code quality. So I wanted to hire a real developer to rewrite my software in a more professional way so it will be maintainable by other developers in the future. I read and found some sample specs and made my own by applying their structure to my document and wanted to get my developer friend to read it and give me advice. After an hour and a half he understood exactly what I was trying to do and how I did it(my algorithms,stack,etc.). How can I get better at explaining things to developers? I add many details and explanations for everything(including working code) but I'm unsure the best way I can learn to pass detailed domain knowledge(my software applies big data, machine learning, graph theory to finance). My end goal is to get them to understand as much as possible from the document and then ask anything they do not understand, but right now it seems they need to extract alot of information from me. How can I get better at communicating domain knowledge to developers?

What is the preferred pattern when attaching a 'runtime object'?

In my application I have the following: public class NeatObject { /* lots of static data, and configuration flags */ } public class NeatObjectConsumer { void DoCleverStuffWithObjectOnGPU(NeatObject obj); } Where NeatObject and its consumer are used to control the GPU. The idea being that, the configuration of an instance of NeatObject and its members, define how the consumer instance behaves. The object can be passed around, edited, and most importantly serialised/deserialised by the application, with and without knowledge of NeatObjectConsumer, then provided back to the consumer to do something else. The purpose of this seperation is: The consumer manages hardware resources, which change depending on the computer, and even on the execution of the application, making preserving the state of an object which does everything difficult. Avoids circular references if the assembly that contains the consumer needs to reference one that only needs to know about NeatObject. However, there is a complication in that the consumer creates hardware resources and needs to associate them with NeatObject. These don't need to be preserved, but still need to be retrieved. DoCleverStuffWithObjectOnGPU() will be called many, many times during execution and so any bottleneck is a concern, therefore I would like to avoid dictionary lookups. What is the preferred method of attaching this information to NeatObject? By preferred, I mean intuitive - other coders can see immediately what is going on - and robust - method doesn't invite playing with the resources or present them in such a way as to make them easily corruptible. Essentially, I want to add my own metadata - how should I do it? Try to use 'actual metadata' functionality like Reflection? A member of the type of an abstract class? Unmanaged pointers? If you took on a project that used this pattern, what would you have liked the previous developer to do?

Does (should?) changing the URI scheme name change the semantics?

If we take: http://example.com/foo is it fair to say that: ftp://example.com/foo .. points to the same resource, just using a different mechanism for resolving it (and of course possibly a different representation, but perhaps not)? This came to light in a discussion we were having surrounding some internal tooling with Git. We have to process some Git repositories, and they come to use as "git@{authority}/{path}" , however the library we're using to interface with them doesn't support the git protocol. I suggested that we should make the service robust in of that it tries to use HTTP or SSH, in essence, discovering what protocols/schemes are supported for resolving the repository at {path} under each {authority}. This was met with some criticism: "We don't know if that's the same repository". My response was: "It had better be!" Looking at RFC 3986, I see this excerpt: URI "resolution" is the process of determining an access mechanism and the appropriate parameters necessary to dereference a URI; this resolution may require several iterations. To use that access mechanism to perform an action on the URI's resource is to "dereference" the URI. Which makes me think that the resolution process is permitted to try different protocols, because: Although many URI schemes are named after protocols, this does not imply that use of these URIs will result in access to the resource via the named protocol. The only concern I have, I guess, is that I only see reference to the notion of changing protocols when it comes to traversing relationships: it is possible for a single set of hypertext documents to be simultaneously accessible and traversable via each of the "file", "http", and "ftp" schemes if the documents refer to each other with relative references. I'm inclined to think I'm wrong in my initial beliefs, because the Normalization and Comparison section of said RFC doesn't mention any way of treating two URIs as equivalent if they use different schemes. It seems like schemes named/based on IP protocols ought to have this notion, at least?

Is it normal for GRUB to take some time (15+s) after I choose what to boot?

I had been planning to change the background of my bootloader for a while, and finally got to it. Now the black screen I get for quite some time was made clear. It is still GRUB, because the background image stays, while all of the text is gone. Then it just simply shows the Lubuntu loading screen for, usually, not more than 3 seconds. I run Lubuntu 12.10. My question is, is this normal behaviour or is something going wrong, causing GRUB to take longer? mod_rewrite not working after upgrade to 12.10

I'm hoping this is a quick and simple fix and that I just need a fresh set of eyes. However, I'm fearful that it might actually be an error in the latest build of the rewrite module. I have a .htaccess file that turns on the rewrite engine (I've made sure the module is enabled), creates some rewrite conditions, and finally a rewrite rule. Here's my .htaccess file for reference: <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?request=$1 [L,QSA,NC] </IfModule> Now for the problem: if I go to hostname.com it works fine. If I go to hostname.com/Index it works fine. However, if I go to hostname.com/index it doesn't rewrite the request and I get a 404. I'm not sure what's going on here. I've used a rewrite rule tester and there doesn't appear to be any issues with my rewrite rule itself. Again, this issue didn't manifest until after I upgraded to 12.10, at which point I know that Apache was updated. Any thoughts? Has anyone else here experienced this? I know that two other people besides myself have experienced this here. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

D20 java engine

I'm trying to incorporate PCGen into my application to avoid recreating the wheel for D20 system. (Are there any other libraries out there?) In other words I would like to use PCGen as a library and do things like: CRUD characters (and all related information) Experience/level managements I don't need the GUI part of it just the information to pass to my application. This is a scenario I can think of: 1. Load available custom classes 2. Create a new Character/NPC 3. Transfer the stats to my system 4. Player keeps playing so I need to update experience 5. Save player in my system and recreate it later. I'm trying to start to create a character from PCClass with no luck. Looking at the code it seems it'll try to load it. I assume load from a file generated from the GUI. Is there a way of bypassing the GUI for all this? I was looking for a tutorial of some sorts without luck. I was able to figure out how to use the dice within PCGen but that's about it. Any ideas?

I've written a class library that reads from an xml file and return the result as a string. But when I want to install it as a COM+ component, an error occurred (Error Code: 80131501). Binding navigation property to RadGrid while using EntityDataSource control

I'm new to Entity Framework and I got stuck in an issue while trying to bind a navigation property (foreign key reference) to a dropdownlist. I have Telerik RadGrid control which gets the data using a EntityDataSource control. Here is the model description: Applications: AppId, AppName, ServerId Servers: ServerId, ServerName The Applicaitons.ServerId is a foreign key reference to Servers.ServerId. The RadGrid lists the applications and allows the user to insert/update/delete an application. I want to show the server names as a dropdownlist in edit mode which I'm not able to. . jQuery Validate - require at least one field in a group to be filled

I'm using the excellent jQuery Validate Plugin to validate some forms. On one form, I need to ensure that the user fills in at least one of a group of fields. I think I've got a pretty good solution, and wanted to share it. Please suggest any improvements you can think of. Finding no built-in way to do this, I searched and found Rebecca Murphey's custom validation method, which was very helpful. I improved this in three ways: To let you pass in a selector for the group of fields To let you specify how many of that group must be filled for validation to pass To show all inputs in the group as passing validation as soon as one of them passes validation. So you can say "at least X inputs that match selector Y must be filled." The end result is a rule like this: partnumber: { require_from_group: [2,".productinfo"] } //The partnumber input will validate if //at least 2 `.productinfo` inputs are filled For best results, put this rule AFTER any formatting rules for that field (like "must contain only numbers", etc). This way, if the user gets an error from this rule and starts filling out one of the fields, they will get immediate feedback about the formatting required without having to fill another field first. Item #3 assumes that you're adding a class of .checked to your error messages upon successful validation. You can do this as follows, as demonstrated here. success: function(label) { label.html(" ").addClass("checked"); } As in the demo linked above, I use CSS to give each span.error an X image as its background, unless it has the class .checked, in which case it gets a check mark image. MVC2 and MVC Futures causing RedirectToAction issues

I've been trying to get the strongly typed version of RedirectToAction from the MVC Futures project to work, but I've been getting no where. Below are the steps I've followed, and the errors I've encountered. Any help is much appreciated. I created a new MVC2 app and changed the About action on the HomeController to redirect to the Index page. Return RedirectToAction("Index") However, I wanted to use the strongly typed extensions, so I downloaded the MVC Futures from CodePlex and added a reference to Microsoft.Web.Mvc to my project. I addded the following "import" statement to the top of HomeContoller.vb Imports Microsoft.Web.Mvc I commented out the above RedirectToAction and added the following line: Return RedirectToAction(Of HomeController)(Function(c) c.Index()) So far, so good. However, I noticed if I uncomment out the first (non Generic) RedirectToAction, it was now causing the following compile error: Error 1 Overload resolution failed because no accessible 'RedirectToAction' can be called with these arguments: Extension method 'Public Function RedirectToAction(Of TController)(action As System.Linq.Expressions.Expression(Of System.Action(Of TController))) As System.Web.Mvc.RedirectToRouteResult' defined in 'Microsoft.Web.Mvc.ControllerExtensions': Data type(s) of the type parameter(s) cannot be inferred from these arguments. Specifying the data type(s) explicitly might correct this error. Becuase I thought this might be some VB issue, I created a new MVC2 project using C# and tried the same as above. I added the following "using" statement to the top of HomeController.cs using Microsoft.Web.Mvc; This time, in the About action method, I could only manage to call the non-generic RedirectToAction by typing the full commmand as follows: return Microsoft.Web.Mvc.ControllerExtensions.RedirectToAction<HomeController>(this, c => c.Index()); Even though I had a "using" statement at the top of the class, if I tried to call the non-generic RedirectToAction as follows: return RedirectToAction<HomeController>(c => c.Index()); I would get the following compile error: Error 1 The non-generic method 'System.Web.Mvc.Controller.RedirectToAction(string)' cannot be used with type arguments What gives? It's not like I'm trying to do anything out of the ordinary. It's a simple vanilla MVC2 project with only a reference to the Futures assembly. I'm hoping that I've missed out something obvious, but I've been scratching my head for too long, so I figured I'd seek some assisstance. If anyone's managed to get this simple scenario working (in VB and/or C#) could they please let me know what, if anything, they did differently? Thanks!

MVC 2 with IIS 6 Problems

Hey guys, I'm using IIS 6 on a Windows 2003 Server and I am trying to get an MVC2 project installed on that machine. I am having nightmare-ish problems doing so! I've looked up TONS of references on what to do, and not 1 single one works. (They work for MVC1 projects, as I have a few of those running already using said solutions). Does anyone have any tips/hints/ideas on what needs to be done for MVC2 projects with IIS 6? I am definitely pulling my hair out over this. I have tried it on 2 of my dev servers, and both get the same result. The closest I can get to a served page is an error page "Object reference not set to an instance of an object", however, the page has try/catch blocks that are being ignored, so I dont think its running the code on the controller, I think it's saying that the controller is the error. (For the reference, the error in question is directed at the HomeController.cs file). Need Help Setting an Image with Transparent Background to Clipboard

I need help setting a transparent image to the clipboard. I keep getting "handle is invalid". Basically, I need a "second set of eyes" to look over the following code. (The complete working project at ftp://missico.net/ImageVisualizer.zip.) This is an image Debug Visualizer class library, but I made the included project to run as an executable for testing. (Note that window is a toolbox window and show in taskbar is set to false.) I was tired of having to perform a screen capture on the toolbox window, open the screen capture with an image editor, and then deleting the background added because it was a screen capture. So I thought I would quickly put the transparent image onto the clipboard. Well, the problem is...no transparency support for Clipboard.SetImage. Google to the rescue...not quite. This is what I have so far. I pulled from a number of sources. See the code for the main reference. My problem is the "invalid handle" when using CF_DIBV5. Do I need to use BITMAPV5HEADER and CreateDIBitmap? Android JSON HttpClient to send data to PHP server with HttpResponse

I am currently trying to send some data from and Android application to a php server (both are controlled by me). There is alot of data collected on a form in the app, this is written to the database. This all works.
