• setting ulimit and ubuntu 8.04

  Hi there, We have two ubuntu 8.04 servers. With the database server I set the table_cache to 1000 however when I restart mysql the status only shows 257 and the open files limit says 1024 I adjusted ulimit by doing ulimit -n 8192 and then restarting mysql; this seemed to do the tick however after a few hours I did ulimit -n and saw it had returned back to 1024 Bit of a worry. I edited the /etc/security/limits.conf and added mysql soft nofile 8192 mysql hard nofile 8192 then rebooted, no change. I then edited and change mysql to * rebooted, no change I then edited and changed it to one line * - nofile 8192 and rebooted, no change. cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max gives me 768730 sysctl fs.file-max gives me fs.file-max = 768730 I am at a bit of a loss to how I can set and keep the ulimit value set so I can increase the table cache properly on mysql.

• Best FTP Objective-C wrapper for iPhone

  I know you use the C based networking API to do FTP communication but I'd prefer to use something a little higher level. I've seen a few Objective-C based wrappers but I'm not sure what to use. I don't need that complex of FTP interaction. Its just the typical create/delete dirs, upload/download files... What do you recommend?

Edit: It appears as thought the mousemove() event isn't binding for earlier elements than the one currently being dragged (should be bound upon their mouseover).

Seems like: Jboss-web.xml specifies the security domain (which can be found in login-config.xml) web.xml specifies what the security level is I don't understand what happens when jboss-web.xml specifies a weak security domain. Ie: one that cannot do what web.xml specifies. What happens then?

• Using Android SAXParser, one my my XML Elements is mysteriously breaking in half.

  And its not '&' Im using the SAXParser object do parse the actual XML. This is normally done by passing a URL to the XMLReader.Parse method. Because my XML is coming from a POST request to a webservice, I am saving that result as a String and then employing StringReader / InputSource to feed this string back to the XMLReader.Parse method. However, something strange is happening at the 2001st character of the XMLstring. The 'characters' method of the document handler is being called TWICE in between the startElement and endElement methods, effectively breaking my string (in this case a project title) into two pieces. Because I am instantiating objects in my characters method, I am getting two objects instead of one. This line, about 2000 chars into the string fires 'characters' two times, breaking between "Lower" and "Level" <title>SUMC-BOOKSTORE, LOWER LEVEL RENOVATIONS</title> When I bypass the StringReader / InputSource workaround and feed a flat XML file to XMLReader.Parse, it works absolutely fine. Something about StringReader and or InputSource is somehow screwing this up. Here is my method that takes and XML string and parses is through the SAXParser. public void parseXML(String XMLstring) { try { SAXParserFactory spf = SAXParserFactory.newInstance(); SAXParser sp = spf.newSAXParser(); XMLReader xr = sp.getXMLReader(); xr.setContentHandler(this); // Something is happening in the StringReader or InputSource // That cuts the XML element in half at the 2001 character mark.   Hi, I have a regular, nested HTML unordered list of links, and I'd like to scrape it with PHP and convert it to an array. The original list looks something like this: <ul> <li><a href="http://someurl.com">First item</a> <ul> <li><a href="http://someotherurl.com/">Child of First Item</a></li> <li><a href="http://someotherurl.com/">Second Child of First Item</a></li> </ul> </li> <li><a href="http://bogusurl.com">Second item</a></li> <li><a href="http://bogusurl.com">Third item</a></li> <li><a href="http://bogusurl.com">Fourth item</a></li> </ul> Any of the items can have children. (The actual screen scraping is not a problem, I can do that.) I'd like to turn this into a PHP array, of just the links, while keeping the hierarchical nature of the list. Any ideas? I've looked at using htmlsimpledom and phpQuery, which both use jQuery like syntax. But, I can't seem to get the syntax right. Thanks.

• XNA - Keyboard text input

  Okay, so basically I want to be able to retrieve keyboard text. Like entering text into a text field or something. I'm only writing my game for windows. I've disregarded using Guide.BeginShowKeyboardInput because it breaks the feel of a self contained game, and the fact that the Guide always shows XBOX buttons doesn't seem right to me either. Yes it's the easiest way, but I don't like it. Next I tried using System.Windows.Forms.NativeWindow. I created a class that inherited from it, and passed it the Games window handle, implemented the WndProc function to catch WM_CHAR (or WM_KEYDOWN) though the WndProc got called for other messages, WM_CHAR and WM_KEYDOWN never did. So I had to abandon that idea, and besides, I was also referencing the whole of Windows forms, which meant unnecessary memory footprint bloat. So my last idea was to create a Thread level, low level keyboard hook. This has been the most successful so far. I get WM_KEYDOWN message, (not tried WM_CHAR yet) translate the virtual keycode with Win32 funcation MapVirtualKey to a char. And I get my text! (I'm just printing with Debug.Write at the moment) A couple problems though. It's as if I have caps lock on, and an unresponsive shift key. (Of course it's not however, it's just that there is only one Virtual Key Code per key, so translating it only has one output) and it adds overhead as it attaches itself to the Windows Hook List and isn't as fast as I'd like it to be, but the slowness could be more due to Debug.Write. Has anyone else approached this and solved it, without having to resort to an on screen keyboard? or does anyone have further ideas for me to try? thanks in advance. note: This is cross posted from the XNA Creators Forums, so if I get an answer there I'll post it here and Vice-Versa Question asked by Jimmy Maybe I'm not understanding the question, but why can't you use the XNA Keyboard and KeyboardState classes? My comment: It's because though you can read keystates, you can't get access to typed text as and how it is typed by the user. So let me further clarify. I want to implement being able to read text input from the user as if they are typing into textbox is windows. The keyboard and KeyboardState class get states of all keys, but I'd have to map each key and combination to it's character representation. This falls over when the user doesn't use the same keyboard language as I do especially with symbols (my double quotes is shift + 2, while american keyboards have theirs somewhere near the return key).

Is a user-defined exception's only advantage that you can define a consistent Error Message? What logic can be written inside exceptions to make them truly more useful? • Snow Leopard tzdata

  I live in Argentina, and our DST rules change often. So often, that major OS' tend to ship with an old version of tzdata DBs. In the past, I successfully updated the time zone databases in Tiger and Leopard. Today, however, when trying to update it in Snow Leopard, it did not work. Not only it failed, but now even after I reverted my changes, there seems to be some "cache" where the time zone information was retained. The files I updated (and reverted) are located at: /usr/share/zoneinfo and /usr/share/icu. To update those, I grabbed Apple's source code for ICU and recompiled it's database using the latest tzdata file (2010b). Then, I recompiled the tzinfo by running zic, and copied all the files to the system folders. Does anyone have experience dealing with Snow Leopard's timezone DB and can help? Thank you.

• Why not .NET-style delegates rather than closures in Java?

  OK, this is going to be my beating a dying horse for the 3rd time. However, this question is different from my earlier two about closures/delegates, which asks about plans for delegates and what are the projected specs and implementation for closures. This question is about - why is the Java community struggling to define 3 different types of closures when we could simply steal the whole concept of delegates lock, stock and barrel from our beloved and friendly neighbour - Microsoft. There are two non-technical conclusions I would be very tempted to jump into: The Java community should hold up its pride, at the cost of needing to go thro convoluted efforts, by not succumbing to borrowing any Microsoft concepts or otherwise vindicate Microsoft's brilliance. Delegates is a Microsoft patented technology. Alright, besides the above two possibilities, Q1. Is there any weakness or inadequacy in msft-styled delegates that the three (or more) forms of closures would be addressing? Q2. I am asking this while shifting between java and c# and it intrigues me that c# delegates does exactly what I needed. Are there features that would be implemented in closures that are not currently available in C# delegates? If so what are they because I cannot see what I need more than what C# delegates has adequately provided me? Q3. I know that one of the concerns about implementing closures/delegates in java is the reduction of orthogonality of the language, where more than one way is exposed to perform a particular task. Is it worth the level convolution and time spent to avoid delegates just to ensure java retains its level of orthogonality? In SQL, we know that it is advisable to break orthogonality by frequently adequately satisfying only the 2nd normal form. Why can't java be subjected to reduction of orthogonality and OO-ness for the sake of simplicity? Q4. The architecture of JVM is technically constrained from implementing .NET-styled delegates. If this reason WERE (subjunctive to emphasize unlikelihood) true, then why can't the three closures proposals be hidden behind a simple delegate keyword or annotation: if we don't like to use @delegate, we could use @method. I cannot see how delegate statement format is more complex than the three closure proposals.

  I recently encountered an idiom I haven't seen before: string assembly by StringWriter and PrintWriter. I mean, I know how to use them, but I've always used StringBuilder. Is there a concrete reason for preferring one over the other? The StringBuilder method seems much more natural to me, but is it just style? I've looked at several questions here (including this one which comes closest: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/602279/stringwriter-or-stringbuilder ), but none in which the answers actually address the question of whether there's a reason to prefer one over the other for simple string assembly. • Only first UIView added view addSubview shows correct orientation

  I've got three ViewControllers set up to handle three views. The problem that I'm having is that in the simulator the orientation is LandscapeRight (which is what I want), and the first view shows up correctly in that landscape view, but when I move onto the second and third views, they show up rotated 90 degrees counter-clockwise with the upper-left corner of the view in the lower left corner of the phone's screen. I've been trying to debug this for a few days and the closest that I've gotten to a clue is tracing it the following way: The following is in my app delegate's applicationDidFinishLaunching: NSLog(@"1"); [window addSubview:welcomeController.view]; NSLog(@"2"); [window addSubview:goalController.view]; NSLog(@"3"); [window addSubview:planningController.view]; NSLog(@"4"); [window bringSubviewToFront:welcomeController.view]; NSLog(@"5"); Each of my ViewControllers implement something similar to the following (the only change being the controller's name switched out in the string passed to NSLog): - (BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation { // Return YES for supported orientations NSLog(@"called for WelcomeController"); return (interfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight); } With that, I get the following output on the Console: a called for WelcomeController called for WelcomeController called for WelcomeController called for WelcomeController 2 called for GoalController 3 called for PlanningController 4 5 I find it interesting that shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation is called 4 times for the first view that's added, while the other two only get called once. I expect that this is probably because it's got to do some setup at first (and I believe that the simulator starts off in portrait mode, so it's might be calling it while doing the rotation), but I find the correlation a bit suspicious. I've switched the order around so that the addSubview is called for the goalController first and the welcomeController second. In this case, it's the goalController which displays in the correct landscape orientation (it's normally the welcome controller). This would seem to eliminate my XIB files and the ViewControllers themselves. I'm not sure why the first view where addSubview is called is special. I also tried using insertSubview at index 0 with the same results.

• Why do I get error 0x0070004 when trying to update to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8?

  So, I'm trying to update Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 via the Windows Store, but every time I attempt to, the update downloads properly, but then I get the error: Windows 8.1 This app wasn't installed - view details When I click on it, it says: Something happened and the Windows 8.1 could not be installed. Please try again. Error code: 0x80070004 Try again Cancel Install What does this mean? A quick Google search yields nothing. I have tried rebooting, clearing the store cache, and resetting Windows Update. A quick chkdsk scan shows no errors. It allows for a quick scan of the changes to notice if there's anything I could use or would change how I've done things. The resolved issues are part of this, but I'm looking for something more high level. The issues require reading everything in each issue and it's often hard to understand what's actually changed.

  I have tomcat server behind the apache. I am using mod_ssl and reverse proxy to the tomcat. All are running at default ports. The full error is as follow. ack Proxy Error The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server. The proxy server could not handle the request POST /pages/doeditpage.action. Reason: Error reading from remote server If I clean the browser cache the error goes away and comes back after few attempts. I test the same on Chrome/Firefox/IE on Windows platform. Wondering it works perfectly on Linux based Chrome/Firefox. I googled a lot there are few answers at stack overflow but I am not able to find my answer. Is this a server side problem? because so many browsers cant be wrong at same time on Windows.

• Make my git user and apache user have read/write/delete access

  I am having permission problems on my server. I use user developer to pull my git repository on the server. Then apache uses its own apache user to do write and execute code. I always have the problems when the app wants to write something in the directory (i.e: log files, and cache ...) if I execute a cron job and it uses my developer rights and wants to add something to the folders that is written by apache. My question is how to have my developer have the same write/delete access as my apache and avoid permission conflicts with each other? I am not fluent on linux command so, it would help if you could provide links or simply examples of doing so. thanks.

I'm only paying about $5 USD per month, so I don't expect <0.1 loads, but ~10 is worrisome. Is it not? • How to force reload all vendor/plugins in rails 2.3 (development mode)

  We have an application with a app/model that references another model stored in a plugin. When the app/model level is reloaded on the second and further requests and that relies on our model in vendor/plugins/... (which stays loaded) it fails (can't dup nil class). We've tried setting config.reload_plugins = true in the development.rb but this doesn't seem to do it. Does anybody know a way to handle this?

• How to best handle exception to repeating calendar events

  I'm working on a project that will require me to implement a calendar. I'm trying to come up with a system that is very flexible: can handle repeating events, exceptions to repeats, etc. I've looked at the schema for applications like iCal, Lotus Notes, and Mozilla to get an idea of how to go about implementing such a system. Currently I'm having trouble deciding what is the best way to handle exceptions to repeating events. I've used databases quite a bit but don't have a ton of experience with really optimizing everything so I'm not sure which method of the two I'm considering would be optimal in terms of overall performance and ability to query/search: Breaking the repeating event. So taking the changing the ending date on the current row for the repeating event, inserting a new row with the exception, and adding another row continuing the old sequence. Simply adding an exception. So adding a new row with some field that indicates it as an override. So here is why I can't decide. Method one will result in a lot more rows since each edit requires 2 extra rows as apposed to only one row by the second method. On the other hand I think the query to find an event would be much simper, and thus possibly faster(?) using the first method. The second method seems like it will require more calculating on the application server since once you get the data you'll have to remove the intersection of the two rows. I know databases are often the bottleneck for websites and while I'm sure a lot of you are thinking either is fine because your project will probably never get large enough for the difference in efficiency to really matter, I'd still like to implement the best solution. So what method would you guys pick, or would you do something completely different? Also, as a side note I'll be using MySQL and PHP. If there is another technology that you think would be better suited for this, especially in the database area, please mention it. Thanks for the advice.

Is it a normal behaviour ? What should I do in the mapping if I want my 2 columns are 2 foreign keys referencing the primary keys of my 2 concerned tables. I use a PostGreSQL database and Hibernate as JPA provider. Thanks, Julien

• Are endless loops in bad form?

  So I have some C++ code for back-tracking nodes in a BFS algorithm. It looks a little like this: typedef std::map<int> MapType; bool IsValuePresent(const MapType& myMap, int beginVal, int searchVal) { int current_val = beginVal; while (true) { if (current_val == searchVal) return true; MapType::iterator it = myMap.find(current_val); assert(current_val != myMap.end()); if (current_val == it->second) // end of the line return false; current_val = it->second; } } However, the while (true) seems... suspicious to me. I know this code works, and logically I know it should work. However, I can't shake the feeling that there should be some condition in the while, but really the only possible one is to use a bool variable just to say if it's done. Should I stop worrying? Or is this really bad form. EDIT: Thanks to all for noticing that there is a way to get around this. However, I would still like to know if there are other valid cases.
