• best way to set up a VM for development (regarding performance)

  I am trying to set up a clean vm I will use in many of my devs. Hopefully I will use it many times and for a long time, so I want to get it right and set it up so performance is as good as possible. I have searched for a list of things to do, but strangely found only older posts, and none here. My requirements are: My host is Vista 32b, and guest is Windows2008 64b, using Vmware Workstation. The VM should also be able to run on a Vmware ESX I cannot move to other products (VirtualBox etc), but info about performance of each one is welcomed for reference. Anyway I guess most advices would apply to other OSs and other VM products. I need network connectivity to my LAN Guest will run many java processes, a DB and perform lots of file I/O What I have found so far is: HOWTO: Squeeze Every Last Drop of Performance Out of Your Virtual PCs: it's and old post, and about Virtual PC, but I guess most things still apply (and also apply to vmware). I guess it makes a difference to disable all unnecessary services, but the ones mentioned in 1 seem like too few, I specifically always disable Windows Search. Any other service I should disable?

  I’ve read that instead of initializing inherited members ( _c1 in our example ) inside derived constructor: class A { public int _c; } class B:A { public B(int c) { _c = c; } } we should initialize them inside base class constructor, since that way we reduce the calls to inherited members ( _c ): class A { public A(int c) { _c = c; } public int _c; } class B:A { public B(int c) : base(c) { } } If _c field is initialized inside base constructor, the order of initialization is the following: 1) First the field initializers of derived class B are called 2) Then field initializers of base class A are called (at this point _c is set to value 0) 3) B’s constructor is called, which in turn calls A’s custom constructor 4) _c field gets set to value of a parameter c ( inside A’s custom constructor ) 5) Once A’s custom constructor returns, B’s constructor executes its code. If _c field is initialized inside B's constructor, the order of initialization is the following: 1) First the field initializers of a derived class B are called 2) Then field initializers of a base class A are called(at this point _c is set to value 0) 3) B’s constructor is called, which in turn calls A’s default constructor 4) Once A’s custom constructor returns, B’s constructor sets _c field to a value of parameter c As far as I can tell, in both cases was _c called two times, so how exactly did we reduce calls to inherited member _c? thanx

  I've been trying to create a specialised CMS, as none of the current open-source ones fit my needs for this project. I did my research on Google, tried multiple times but haven't got very far with this project. I'm trying to create a CMS for a TV/episode guide which is similar to this: (for some that don't have the :// just copy-and-paste and add it after http in the URL) http library.digiguide.com/lib/programmenextshowing/Police%2C+Camera%2C+Action!-12578 (one such example) - where records expire and delete from the database after expiration. This is the design I'm trying to emulate: http library.digiguide.com/lib/programme/24-84241/Drama/ - the programme http://library.digiguide.com/lib/episode/Under+Surveillance-714873 - a typical episode, could use .htaccess to remove php from name http library.digiguide.com/lib/programmenextshowing/24-84241 - paginated episode display (using script that I found in search here possibly) I don't have access to cron job as it's on Windows/Apache, so that's out the question for this one. I'm not sure how to go about this successfully, anyone got any advice? (Note:Although the linked site runs in ASP.NET, it's the design and feel of it I'm trying to emulate, except in PHP. I've managed to emulate that site's design, but with my own tweaks to it.)

• Why does 12:20 PM parse to 0:20 on the next day?

  I'm using java.text.SimpleDateFormat to parse string representations of date/time values inside an XML document. I'm seeing all times that have an hour value of 12 shifted by 12 hours into the future, i. e. 20 minutes past noon gets parsed to mean 20 minutes past midnight the following day. I wrote a unit test which seems to confirm that the error is made upon parsing (I checked the return values from getTime() with the linux shell command date). Now I'm wondering: is there a bug in the parse() method? is there something wrong with the input string? am I using the wrong format string for the input? The input data is taken from Yahoo's YWeather service. • How to make a Global Array?

  So, I read this post, and it's pretty much exactly what I was looking for. However... it doesn't work. I guess I'm not going to go with the singleton object, but rather making the array in either a Global.h file, or insert it into the _Prefix file. Both times I do that though, I get the error: Expected specifier-qualifier-list before 'static' and it doesn't work. So... I'm not sure how to get it to work, I can remove extern and it works, but I feel like I need that to make it a constant. The end goal is to have this Mutable Array be accessible from any object or any file in my project. Help would be appreciated! This is the code for my Globals.h file: #import <Foundation/Foundation.h> @interface Globals : NSObject { static extern NSMutableArray * myGlobalArray; } @end I don't think I need anything in the implementation file. If I were to put that in the prefix file, the error was the same.

• How to get around the event bubble using jQuery's: .live()

Here is the code in question: $(".navItems>ul>li").live('click', function(){ var selectorID = $(this).attr('id'); $(".infoList").slideUp('fast', function(){ switchTabInfo(selectorID); }); function switchTabInfo(selectorID){ var actionID = selectorID.substring(4); actionID = "#" + actionID; $(actionID).slideDown(); } So in short i have a these .infoList classes with id names tied to back to the nav li id. That lists item's id might be nav_testsHistory for example. With all the content boxes hidden by class name this javascript makes a pleasing slide up, down effect. But the third content box flickers as will the second one after a third box push. It slides up and down a second unnecessary time. If I add an alert like this: $(".navItems>ul>li").live('click', function(){ var selectorID = $(this).attr('id'); $(".infoList").slideUp('fast', function(){ switchTabInfo(selectorID); alert('bubble'); }); The alert fires 3 times?! So my research took to reading about the event bubble. What I cannot find is how to check if it has been fired. I have not tried setting an input val and doing a tf test around the nested slider action. Cause that's crude. More info, all the code above is in a function, which is in an init() function, which is called on document ready. That's the only js file besides jquery 1.3.2. What do you guys think?

• Business Objects - Containers or functional?

  Where I work, we've gone back and forth on this subject a number of times and are looking for a sanity check. Here's the question: Should Business Objects be data containers (more like DTOs) or should they also contain logic that can perform some functionality on that object. Example - Take a customer object, it probably contains some common properties (Name, Id, etc), should that customer object also include functions (Save, Calc, etc.)? One line of reasoning says separate the object from the functionality (single responsibility principal) and put the functionality in a Business Logic layer or object. The other line of reasoning says, no, if I have a customer object I just want to call Customer.Save and be done with it. Why do I need to know about how to save a customer if I'm consuming the object? Our last two projects have had the objects separated from the functionality, but the debate has been raised again on a new project. Which makes more sense? EDIT These results are very similar to our debates. One vote to one side or another completely changes the direction. Does anyone else want to add their 2 cents? EDIT Eventhough the answer sampling is small, it appears that the majority believe that functionality in a business object is acceptable as long as it is simple but persistence is best placed in a separate class/layer. We'll give this a try. Thanks for everyone's input...

  Hello, Language: C# Development Environment: Visual Studio 2008 Sorry if the english is not perfect. I want to login to a Website and get some Data from there. My Problem is that the Cookies does not work. Everytime the Website says that I should activate Cookies but i activated the Cookies trough a Cookiecontainer. I sniffed the traffic serveral times for the login progress and I see no problem there. I tried different methods to login and I have searched if someone else have this Problem but no results... • How to isolate a single element from a scraped web page in R

  Hello, I'm trying to do soemone a favour, and it's a tad outside my comfort zone, so I'm stuck. I want to use R to scrape this page (http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/archive/germany2006/results/matches/match=97410001/report.html ) and others, to get the goal scorers and times. • Why is my Map broken?

  Scenario: Creating a server which has Room objects which contain User objects. I want to store the rooms in a Map of some sort by Id (a string). Desired Behavior: When a user makes a request via the server, I should be able to look up the Room by id from the library and then add the user to the room, if that's what the request needs. Currently I use the static function in my Library.java class where the Map is stored to retrieve Rooms: public class Library { private static Hashtable<String, Rooms> myRooms = new Hashtable<String, Rooms>(); public static addRoom(String s, Room r) { myRooms.put(s, r); } public static Room getRoomById(String s) { return myRooms.get(s); } } In another class I'll do the equivalent of myRoom.addUser(user); What I'm observing using Hashtable, is that no matter how many times I add a user to the Room returned by getRoomById, the user is not in the room later. I thought that in Java, the object that was returned was essentially a reference to the data, the same object that was in the Hashtable with the same references; but, it isn't behaving like that. Is there a way to get this behavior? Maybe with a wrapper of some sort? Am I just using the wrong variant of map? Help?

• cakephp Activation Email Sending slow

  Hi all, I have a simple email sender for user account activation. Depending on which email address I use, I get significantly different response times: University email - 1 minute, Gmail - 3-4 hours, Yahoo - 1 or 2 days -- which seems bizarre. Has anyone else seen this phenomenon? EDIT: There weren't many responses (even for a bounty), but I'll try to explain my problem more clearly. This probably isn't greylsting -- If I so a simple: php mail ($to, $subject, $body) // this delivers instantly. My cakephp code: function __sendActivationEmail($id) { $User = $this->User->read ( null, $id ); $this->set ( 'suffix_url', $User ['User'] ['id'] . For some of my users, it works instantly, but for other users (of the same service provider, i.e., gmail, it sees these delays). Any clues?

• Symfony + JQueryUI Tabs navigation menu question

  I'm trying to use the tabs purely as a navigational menu, loading my pages in the tabs, but being able to bookmark said tabs, and have the address bar correspond with the action I'm executing. So here is my simple nav partial: <div id='tabs'> <ul> <li id='home'><a href="<?php echo url_for('post/index') ?>" title="Home">Home</a></li> <li id='test'><a href="<?php echo url_for('post/test') ?>" title="Test">Test</a></li> </ul> </div> And the simple tabs intializer: $(document).ready(function() { $('#tabs').tabs({spinner: '' }); }); My layout just displays $sf_content. I want to display the content for the action I'm executing (currently home or test) in the tab, via ajax, and have the tab be bookmarkable. I've googled this like 4000 times and I can't find an example of what I'm trying to do. If anyone has a resource they know of, I can look it up, or if you can help, I would greatly appreciate it.   I am trying to retrieve the individual detail rows without having to create an object for the parent. I have a map which joins a parent table with the detail to achieve this: Table("UdfTemplate"); Id(x => x.Id, "Template_Id"); Map(x => x.FieldCode, "Field_Code"); Map(x => x.ClientId, "Client_Id"); Join("UdfFields", join => { join.KeyColumn("Template_Id"); join.Map(x => x.Name, "COLUMN_NAME"); join.Map(x => x.Label, "DISPLAY_NAME"); join.Map(x => x.IsRequired, "MANDATORY_FLAG") .CustomType<YesNoType>(); join.Map(x => x.MaxLength, "DATA_LENGTH"); join.Map(x => x.Scale, "DATA_SCALE"); join.Map(x => x.Precision, "DATA_PRECISION"); join.Map(x => x.MinValue, "MIN_VALUE"); join.Map(x => x.MaxValue, "MAX_VALUE"); }); When I run the query in NH using: Session.CreateCriteria(typeof(UserDefinedField)) .Add(Restrictions.Eq("FieldCode", code)).List<UserDefinedField>(); I get back the first row three times as opposed to the three individual rows it should return. Looking at the SQL trace in NH Profiler the query appears to be correct. The problem feels like it is in the mapping but I am unsure how to troubleshoot that process. I am about to turn on logging to see what I can find but I thought I would post here in case someone with experience mapping joins knows where I am going wrong.

• What's the fastest way to bulk insert a lot of data in SQL Server (C# client)

  I am hitting some performance bottlenecks with my C# client inserting bulk data into a SQL Server 2005 database and I'm looking for ways in which to speed up the process. I am already using the SqlClient.SqlBulkCopy (which is based on TDS) to speed up the data transfer across the wire which helped a lot, but I'm still looking for more. I have a simple table that looks like this: CREATE TABLE [BulkData]( [ContainerId] [int] NOT NULL, [BinId] [smallint] NOT NULL, [Sequence] [smallint] NOT NULL, [ItemId] [int] NOT NULL, [Left] [smallint] NOT NULL, [Top] [smallint] NOT NULL, [Right] [smallint] NOT NULL, [Bottom] [smallint] NOT NULL, CONSTRAINT [PKBulkData] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ( [ContainerIdId] ASC, [BinId] ASC, [Sequence] ASC )) I'm inserting data in chunks that average about 300 rows where ContainerId and BinId are constant in each chunk and the Sequence value is 0-n and the values are pre-sorted based on the primary key. The %Disk time performance counter spends a lot of time at 100% so it is clear that disk IO is the main issue but the speeds I'm getting are several orders of magnitude below a raw file copy. Does it help any if I: Drop the Primary key while I am doing the inserting and recreate it later Do inserts into a temporary table with the same schema and periodically transfer them into the main table to keep the size of the table where insertions are happening small Anything else? -- Based on the responses I have gotten, let me clarify a little bit: Portman: I'm using a clustered index because when the data is all imported I will need to access data sequentially in that order. I don't particularly need the index to be there while importing the data. Is there any advantage to having a nonclustered PK index while doing the inserts as opposed to dropping the constraint entirely for import? Chopeen: The data is being generated remotely on many other machines (my SQL server can only handle about 10 currently, but I would love to be able to add more). It's not practical to run the entire process on the local machine because it would then have to process 50 times as much input data to generate the output. Jason: I am not doing any concurrent queries against the table during the import process, I will try dropping the primary key and see if that helps. ~ Andrew

• BitBlting multiple images to buffer

  So I've made a class which draws a transparant image to a buffer. the buffer is a HDC which has been used blackness on. What I am trying to do is draw three images to this buffer. Which means I am using this function three times. After that's done, I output it to the screen (using SRCCOPYing the buffer). But what I get to see is just the third image and blackness. void draw_buffer(HDC buffer, int draw_x, int draw_y) { BitBlt(this-main, draw_x, draw_y, this-img_width, this-img_height, this-image, this-mask_x, this-mask_y, SRCAND); BitBlt(this-main, draw_x, draw_y, this-img_width, this-img_height, this-image, this-img_x, this-img_y, SRCPAINT); BitBlt(buffer, 0, 0, 800, 600, this-main, 0, 0, SRCCOPY); } At initiation, this-main becomes this: this->main = CreateCompatibleDC(GetDC(0)); this->bitmap = CreateCompatibleBitmap(GetDC(0),800,600); SelectObject(this->main, this->bitmap); What is wrong with my code?

• How can I open VLC via browser with PHP (Mac OS X)

  I'm trying to open VLC via browser and make it instantly play the given video file on Mac OS X. This runs on my local server and is only meant to run locally - therefore I already run apache (MAMP) with my username and with group "staff" (defined in httpd.conf). YES - I do know that VLC has http interface - however that is not what I need, so do not suggest that... My current system works without any problems when I run it via Terminal: php /var/www/Movies/index.php - This leads to VLC opening and video starts playing fullscreen like intented. Problems start when I run the same PHP-page with browser. Then the VLC-process starts, but there's no GUI for it, video file won't start playing and the VLC-process takes nearly 100% of CPU. Both; terminal and browser started VLC-processes run with the same user (mine) Both have "Parent process" bash VLC-process begun with Terminal has empty "Process group" (only process id-number) and browser started has "httpd" + (id-number) VLC-process started via browser makes 1000-times more "Mach System Calls" than it's Terminal-started counterpart. Could anyone give me any pointers on how to get this thing working? index.php # $j is a file path to the videofile and is defined before exec('/var/www/Movies/vlc.sh "' . $j . I have added in the code as of right now an extra onclick="this.style.display='none'" in the .cs code but that is a ugly fix I was wondering if anyone would have a better idea of disabling the ThemeButton clientside?? pls any feedback if I need to give more examples or further explain the question thanks.

• Compile and optimize for different target architectures

  Summary: I want to take advantage of compiler optimizations and processor instruction sets, but still have a portable application (running on different processors). Normally I could indeed compile 5 times and let the user choose the right one to run. My question is: how can I can automate this, so that the processor is detected at runtime and the right executable is executed without the user having to chose it? I have an application with a lot of low level math calculations. These calculations will typically run for a long time. I would like to take advantage of as much optimization as possible, preferably also of (not always supported) instruction sets. On the other hand I would like my application to be portable and easy to use (so I would not like to compile 5 different versions and let the user choose). Is there a possibility to compile 5 different versions of my code and run dynamically the most optimized version that's possible at execution time? With 5 different versions I mean with different instruction sets and different optimizations for processors. I don't care about the size of the application. At this moment I'm using gcc on Linux (my code is in C++), but I'm also interested in this for the Intel compiler and for the MinGW compiler for compilation to Windows. The executable doesn't have to be able to run on different OS'es, but ideally there would be something possible with automatically selecting 32 bit and 64 bit as well. Edit: Please give clear pointers how to do it, preferably with small code examples or links to explanations. From my point of view I need a super generic solution, which is applicable on any random C++ project I have later. Edit I assigned the bounty to ShuggyCoUk, he had a great number of pointers to look out for. I would have liked to split it between multiple answers but that is not possible. • Linq to SQL generates StackOverflowException in tight Insert loop

  I'm parsing an XML file and inserting the rows into a table (and related tables) using LinqToSQL. I parse the XML file using LinqToXml into IEnumerable. Then, I create a foreach loop, where I build my LinqToSQL objects and call InsertOnSubmit and SubmitChanges at the end of each loop. Nothing special here. Usually, I make it through around 4,100 records before receiving a StackOverflowException from LinqToSql, right as I call SubmitChanges. It's not always on 4,100... sometimes it's 4102, sometimes, less, etc. I've tried inserting the records that generate the failure individually, but putting them in their own Xml file, but that inserts fine... so it's not the data. I'm running the whole process from an MVC2 app that is uploading the Xml file to the server. I've adjusted my WebRequest timeouts to appropriate values, and again, I'm not getting timeout errors, just StackOverflowExceptions. So is there some pattern that I should follow for times when I have to do many insertions into the database? I never encounter this exception on smaller Xml files, just larger ones.

• Good Learning Method for Objective-C?

  Hi I know this must be asked a millions times and can't be easy to answer as there is o definitive method, but any help would be appreciated, thanks. I have been playing around with all sorts of things in Xcode and with Objective-C, however I can't seem to find a good way of learning things in an efficient way. I have bought the book 'Programming in Objective-C 2.0' and its great but just lays down the basics it seems. I want to learn in the 2D game development direction, then of course 3D after nailing that, if thats the right thing to do? I am 17 currently in year 13, last year of school/A Levels and am almost definitely taking a gap year. Any good, well known reputable courses online or offline (real world)? This is my first programming language, and I am absolutely serious about learning this. One last question, is when learning things online, I have in the past started building a feature and learning a certain aspect in programming only to find out after adding more its slows down the app or its to inefficient. Is the key to use a certain method in a certain situation (being os many ways to do the same thing) or use any of those methods and refine it in your app to make it run smoothly? Sorry, its hard for me to know when I have little experience, thus far. Sorry for rambling on! I would appreciate any help, thank you!

• Strange Ruby String Selection

  The string in question (read from a file): if (true) then { _this = createVehicle ["Land_hut10", [6226.8901, 986.091, 4.5776367e-005], [], 0, "CAN_COLLIDE"]; _vehicle_10 = _this; _this setDir -2.109278; }; Retrieved from a large list of similar (all same file) strings via the following: get_stringR(string,"if","};") And the function code: def get_stringR(a,b,c) b = a.index(b) b ||= 0 c = a.rindex(c) c ||= b r = a[b,c] return r end As so far, this works fine, but what I wanted to do is select the array after "createVehicle", the following (I thought) should work. newstring = get_string(myString,"\[","\];") Note get_string is the same as get_stringR, except it uses the first occurrence of the pattern both times, rather then the first and last occurrence. The output should have been: ["Land_hut10", [6226.8901, 986.091, 4.5776367e-005], [], 0, "CAN_COLLIDE"]; Instead it was the below, given via 'puts': ["Land_hut10", [6226.8901, 986.091, 4.5776367e-005], [], 0, "CAN_COLLIDE"]; _vehicle_10 = _this; _this setDir Some 40 characters past the point it should have retrieve, which was very strange... Second note, using both get_string and get_stringR produced the exact same result with the parameters given. I then decided to add the following to my get_string code: b = a.index(b) b ||= 0 c = a.index(c) c ||= b if c 40 then c -= 40 end r = a[b,c] return r And it works as expected (for every 'block' in the file, even though the strings after that array are not identical in any way), but something obviously isn't right :).

• Most efficient way to check for DBNull and then assign to a variable?

  This question comes up occasionally but I haven't seen a satisfactory answer. A typical pattern is (row is a DataRow): if (row["value"] != DBNull.Value) { someObject.Member = row["value"]; } My first question is which is more efficient (I've flipped the condition): row["value"] == DBNull.Value; // Or row["value"] is DBNull; // Or row["value"].GetType() == typeof(DBNull) // Or... any suggestions? This indicates that .GetType() should be faster, but maybe the compiler knows a few tricks I don't? Second question, is it worth caching the value of row["value"] or does the compiler optimize the indexer away anyway? eg. object valueHolder; if (DBNull.Value == (valueHolder = row["value"])) {} Disclaimers: row["value"] exists. I don't know the column index of the column (hence the column name lookup) I'm asking specifically about checking for DBNull and then assignment (not about premature optimization etc). Edit: I benchmarked a few scenarios (time in seconds, 10000000 trials): row["value"] == DBNull.Value: 00:00:01.5478995 row["value"] is DBNull: 00:00:01.6306578 row["value"].GetType() == typeof(DBNull): 00:00:02.0138757 Object.ReferenceEquals has the same performance as "==" The most interesting result? If you mismatch the name of the column by case (eg. "Value" instead of "value", it takes roughly ten times longer (for a string): row["Value"] == DBNull.Value: 00:00:12.2792374 The moral of the story seems to be that if you can't look up a column by it's index, then ensure that the column name you feed to the indexer matches the DataColumn's name exactly. Caching the value also appears to be nearly twice as fast: No Caching: 00:00:03.0996622 With Caching: 00:00:01.5659920 So the most efficient method seems to be: object temp; string variable; if (DBNull.Value != (temp = row["value"]) { variable = temp.ToString(); } This was a good learning experience.

• Perform Grouping of Resultsets in Code, not on Database Level

  Stackoverflowers, I have a resultset from a SQL query in the form of: Category Column2 Column3 A 2 3.50 A 3 2 B 3 2 B 1 5 ... I need to group the resultset based on the Category column and sum the values for Column2 and Column3. I have to do it in code because I cannot perform the grouping in the SQL query that gets the data due to the complexity of the query (long story). This grouped data will then be displayed in a table. I have it working for specific set of values in the Category column, but I would like a solution that would handle any possible values that appear in the Category column. I know there has to be a straightforward, efficient way to do it but I cannot wrap my head around it right now. How would you accomplish it? EDIT I have attempted to group the result in SQL using the exact same grouping query suggested by Thomas Levesque and both times our entire RDBMS crashed trying to process the query. I was under the impression that Linq was not available until .NET 3.5. This is a .NET 2.0 web application so I did not think it was an option. Am I wrong in thinking that? EDIT Starting a bounty because I believe this would be a good technique to have in the toolbox to use no matter where the different resultsets are coming from. I believe knowing the most concise way to group any 2 somewhat similar sets of data in code (without .NET LINQ) would be beneficial to more people than just me.

• Aggregating / Collecting AJAX requests

  I have situation where a user can manipulate a large set of data (presented in a table) by using a bunch of filters represented as checkboxes. The page is AJAXed up so the user doesn't have to wait for a full page refresh every time they click a filter. The way it's currently implemented is by having an event handler watch all the checkboxes and request filtered data from the server when a click event is triggered. This works fine. However, there is a usability & performance issue with doing it this way. For example, if a user clicks 6 checkboxes, 6 AJAX requests are triggered and they all come back at various intervals causing the page to be updated 6 times. This will most probably annoy the user and seems rather inefficient. I want to put some kind of timeout on the event handler to do something like this: "Wait for 1 second and if there are no more filters clicked trigger the AJAX request". However, at the moment I've only been able to delay all 6 requests by 1 second. I'm not sure how to aggregate / collect the filter info into 1 AJAX request. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

• Newbie T-SQL dynamic stored procedure -- how can I improve it?

I've learned enough to write the procedure below -- but also enough to know that I don't know enough! This routine will have to go into a live environment soon, and it works, but I'm quite certain there are a number of c**k-ups and gotchas in it that I know nothing about. The routine copies data from table A to table B, replacing the data in table B. The tables could be in any database. I plan to call this routine multiple times from another stored procedure.
