  • Image thumbnails flashes and then disappears in Windows Vista

    - by Hemant
I have Windows Vista installed on my machine and I am facing this really annoying problem. Whenever I open a folder having images, image thumbnails appear for an instant and they are replaced by standard file icon. Argh... Points to note: Setting "Always show icon, never thumbnail" is unchecked Running Windows Aero theme (with transparency support) Have 4GB of RAM on my machine so memory is not a problem Please can you suggest a solution?

  • How do VirtualBox Snapshots work?

    - by Edward Tanguay
I've made three snapshots on VirtualBox virtual machine (winxp). I want to go back to Snapshot 2. If I click on "Snapshot 2" and click Start, it goes back to the current state. I can click on "Current State" and "revert to current snapshot" (unclear: what is the "current snapshot", since I have 3 snapshots), but after it is finished, I can't discern what it did exactly and when I click start, it returns to the current state. How do I go back to Snapshot 2?

  • sub domains with /etc/hosts and apache for gitorious

    - by QLands
I managed to have a local install of Gitorious. Now I need to finalize the apache integration using a virtual server but nothing seems to work. See for example my /etc/hosts file: 127.0.0.1 localhost 172.26.17.70 darkstar.ilri.org darkstar 172.26.17.70 git.darkstar.ilri.org My vhosts.conf has the following entries: # # Use name-based virtual hosting. # NameVirtualHost *:80 <VirtualHost *:80> <Directory /srv/httpd/htdocs> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks ExecCGI AllowOverride None Order allow, deny Allow from all </Directory> ServerName darkstar.ilri.org DocumentRoot /srv/httpd/htdocs ErrorLog /var/log/httpd/error_log AddHandler cgi-script .cgi </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> <Directory /srv/httpd/git.darkstar.ilri.org/gitorious/public> Options FollowSymLinks ExecCGI AllowOverride None Order allow, deny Allow from All </Directory> AddHandler cgi-script .cgi DocumentRoot /srv/httpd/git.darkstar.ilri.org/gitorious/public ServerName git.darkstar.ilri.org ErrorLog /var/www/git.darkstar.ilri.org/log/error.log CustomLog /var/www/git.darkstar.ilri.org/log/access.log combined AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/xml text/javascript text/css application/x-javascript BrowserMatch ^Mozilla/4 gzip-only-text/html BrowserMatch ^Mozilla/4\.0[678] no-gzip BrowserMatch \bMSIE !no-gzip !gzip-only-text/html <FilesMatch "\.(ico|pdf|flv|jpg|jpeg|png|gif|js|css|swf)$"> ExpiresActive On ExpiresDefault "access plus 1 year" </FilesMatch> FileETag None RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/system/maintenance.html -f RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} !maintenance.html RewriteRule ^.*$ /system/maintenance.html [L] </VirtualHost> Now, when I go with Firefox to darkstar.ilri.org it shows the default Apache screen: "It works!". but when I go to git.darkstar.ilri.org it waits for few seconds then falls to darkstar.ilri.org and the default apache page. No error is reported. If I run httpd -S I get: VirtualHost configuration: wildcard NameVirtualHosts and _default_ servers: *:80 is a NameVirtualHost default server darkstar.ilri.org (/etc/httpd/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf:21) port 80 namevhost darkstar.ilri.org (/etc/httpd/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf:21) port 80 namevhost git.darkstar.ilri.org (/etc/httpd/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf:37) Syntax OK The funny thing is that if I configure gotirious in a host called gitrepository, add 127.0.0.1 gitrepository and go with Firefox to gitrepository.. Gitorious works... But why not with git.darkstar.ilri.org? Many thanks in advance.

  • Windows Home 7 and virtualization

    - by progtick
so apparently, you can't use VirtualBox etc with Windows Home 7. because you would be using two licenses instead of one. So other users that tried virtualization with Windows Home Premium 7, did you just end up using another OS like Ubuntu etc? Did you find a workaround for using Windows? When I say virtualization, I mean virtual machine of sort - where dangerous websites can be visited, nasty applications can be tried etc.

  • Looking for Ubuntu 10.10 driver for GeForce GT 425M GPU.

    - by Fantomas
It came with my Sony VAIO® VPCF133FX/H 16.4" Notebook. Ubuntu does suggest an NVIDIA driver for me, but when I install it, I cannot boot back in normally. I have to boot into a failsafe mode, then reset graphics setting to default, and reboot again. Right now I am stuck in 800 x 600 mode, but I would like to do better, and take advantage of my 1GB graphics memory :(. Please let me know if you have questions.

  • How to get the best LINPACK result and conquer the Top500?

    - by knweiss
Given a large Linux HPC cluster with hundreds/thousands of nodes. What are your best practices to get the best possible LINPACK benchmark (HPL) result to submit for the Top500 supercomputer list? To give you an idea what kind of answers I would appreciate here are some sub-questions (with links): How to you tune the parameters (N, NB, P, Q, memory-alignment, etc) for the HPL.dat file (without spending too much time trying each possible permutation - esp with large problem sizes N)? Are there any Top500 submission rules to be aware of? What is allowed, what isn't? Which MPI product, which version? Does it make a difference? Any special host order in your MPI machine file? Do you use CPU pinning? How to you configure your interconnect? Which interconnect? Which BLAS package do you use for which CPU model? (Intel MKL, AMD ACML, GotoBLAS2, etc.) How do you prepare for the big run (on all nodes)? Start with small runs on a subset of nodes and then scale up? Is it really necessary to run LINPACK with a big run on all of the nodes (or is extrapolation allowed)? How do you optimize for the latest Intel/AMD CPUs? Hyperthreading? NUMA? Is it worth it to recompile the software stack or do you use precompiled binaries? Which settings? Which compiler optimizations, which compiler? (What about profile-based compilation?) How to get the best result given only a limited amount of time to do the benchmark run? (You can block a huge cluster forever) How do you prepare the individual nodes (stopping system daemons, freeing memory, etc)? How do you deal with hardware faults (ruining a huge run)? Are there any must-read documents or websites about this topic? E.g. I would love to hear about some background stories of some of the current Top500 systems and how they did their LINPACK benchmark. I deliberately don't want to mention concrete hardware details or discuss hardware recommendations because I don't want to limit the answers. However, feel free to mention hints e.g. for specific CPU models.

  • SQL Server 2000 -- Log Shipping reliability?

    - by Chris J
I've been asked to look into log shipping for SQL Server 2000 (yes, 2000): something in my memory tells me that I looked at this years ago and there were question marks over it's reliability. I'm trying to google stuff, but given the age of 2000 now I've put pulled up anything to confirm this -- most seem to say they're using it without problem, so just want confirm whether I'm just being delusional, or whether there were problems, but with a fully patched SP4 box these don't exist any more. Cheers!

  • Can you create ACLs with open vSwitch on XenServer 5.6FP1 without using the DVS appliance?

    - by bwizzy
I have a pool of XenServer hosts running the Free version of XenServer 5.6 FP1. I was wondering if I change the network backend to use Open vSwitch if I can specify ACLs on individual network VIFs without needing to use the DVS appliance (distributed virtual switch) which requires an Advanced License or higher. Basically I'm looking for a way to isolate VMs on my network so that if a user had root access on the command line they couldn't access other servers they should not be able to (without using a VLAN).

  • Linux ubuntu wubi

    - by Jamaica Bob
I would like to install linux ubuntu next to my primary windows 7 OS. I found that wubi ubuntu installer which helps you with simple installation/uninstallation of ubuntu. But the wiki says that wubi uses a virtual disk. Is that similar to virtually running the OS? I really dont want my primary system to slow down because of that. Should i rather go with the classical dual boot? If WUBI, whats the recommended install size? Thanks

  • What filesystem for shared (read/write) PC/Mac external drive?

    - by webworm
Is there a recommended filesystem to use when sharing an external drive between the Mac and PC? I understand there are options for Macs to read/write NTFS filesystems and also for PCs to read/write HFS+ filesystems. Is there a preferred filesystem or perhaps a different filesystem that both Mac and PC and read/write? I know I could use FAT32 but some of the files I use are larger than 4 GB (i.e. Virtual Machine images)

  • Is it possible to dedicate the physical screen of a vmware server machine to a guest vm graphically?

    - by matnagel
I have a vmware server 2.x running on ubuntu server (8.04). So the graphics card and the screen of the physical box are unused (I log in remotely and the host os has only the cli console installed). I wonder if it is possible to assign this graphics card to a virtual machine directly and use it for the gui of this guest? Or maybe if I add a second graphics card to the machine?

  • Best way to partition 1TB (Linux&Windows7)

    - by Simon
Any intelligent way to partition 1TB and be prepared for resizing/adding/deleting partitions? I was thinking about LVM, but as far as i remember, Windows7 can't be installed on logical volume right? For now my plan is: - ~150GB for Windows7 and other stuff (VisualStudio..., maybe I'll split it 100/50 or something like that) - simple NTFS - 850GB = LVM - disk for linux (Ubuntu) and other stuff virtual machines etc. I'm mostly interested in how and what tools should I use to get easy in maintain partitions for both systems.

  • Server Hardware on the Desktop

    - by jcnnghm
When I rebuild my desktop, I'm thinking of using server hardware instead of desktop hardware. I want to do this so I can easily add a lot of ECC memory (~20GB), and possibly more than one processor. I know that video hardware could be a problem, especially because I use 4 monitors. I should be fine with this, as long as I have two pci-e channels. Are there any downsides to doing this? Anything I'm not seeing?

  • L2TP and multiple interfaces on the machine

    - by Alex
We have setup ipsec and l2tp on linux. One question came up (due to firewall management policy) is whether it's possible to have 1 virtual interface instead of one per connected client. Now we have: ppp0 serverip clientip1 ppp1 serverip clientip2 Want to have: l2tp_tun serverip serverip like with OpenVPN's tun interfaces and then to be able to push IP address and route to each client.

  • Windows Server not installing audio drivers properly

    - by user34322
I am trying to install a dummy sound card on a Windows Server machine (in Amazon EC2 cloud) in order for one of my application to work. I'm trying to accomplish that with Virtual Audio Cable and REAUDIO3. Both tools managed to install a new device on my Windows XP machine, but on Windows Server, no new devices appear. Windows Audio and Plug and Play services are Started and Automatic. ANY ideas are greatly appreciated.

  • Is ECC mandatory in SSD technology?

    - by Alexander Shcheblikin
While shopping for an SSD I have noticed that some manufacturers promote their "Pro" models as the ones sporting ECC data protection. Those manufacturers do not mention ECC in their budget models descriptions. However, Wikipedia article on flash memory states that "NAND relies on ECC to compensate for bits that may spontaneously fail during normal device operation." So the question is does any SSD device use ECC behind the scenes for its normal operation and is that ECC "feature" just a marketing ploy?
