• CURL Authentication being lost?

    - by John Sloan
    I am authenticating a login via CURL just fine. I have a variable I am using to display the returned HTML, and it is returning my user control panel as if I am logged in. After authenticating, I want to communicate variables with a form on another page within the site; but for some reason the HTML from that page is returning a non-authenticated version of the header (as if the original authentication never took place.) I have a cookies.txt file with 777 permissions, and have tried just getting the contents of the same page shown when I authenticate and it is as if I am losing any associated session/cookie data somewhere along the way. Here is my curl.class file - <? class Curl { public $cookieJar = ""; // Make sure the cookies.txt file is read/write permissions public function __construct($cookieJarFile = 'cookies.txt') { $this->cookieJar = $cookieJarFile; } function setup() { $header = array(); $header[0] = "Accept: text/xml,application/xml,application/xhtml+xml,"; $header[0] .= "text/html;q=0.9,text/plain;q=0.8,image/png,*/*;q=0.5"; $header[] = "Cache-Control: max-age=0"; $header[] = "Connection: keep-alive"; $header[] = "Keep-Alive: 300"; $header[] = "Accept-Charset: ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.7"; $header[] = "Accept-Language: en-us,en;q=0.5"; $header[] = "Pragma: "; // browsers keep this blank. curl_setopt($this->curl, CURLOPT_USERAGENT, 'Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.2; en-US; rv:1.8.1.7) Gecko/20070914 Firefox/2.0.0.7'); curl_setopt($this->curl, CURLOPT_HTTPHEADER, $header); curl_setopt($this->curl, CURLOPT_COOKIEJAR, $this->cookieJar); curl_setopt($this->curl, CURLOPT_COOKIEFILE, $this->cookieJar); curl_setopt($this->curl, CURLOPT_AUTOREFERER, true); curl_setopt($this->curl, CURLOPT_COOKIESESSION, true); curl_setopt($this->curl, CURLOPT_FOLLOWLOCATION, true); curl_setopt($this->curl, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, true); } function get($url) { $this->curl = curl_init($url); $this->setup(); return $this->request(); } function getAll($reg, $str) { preg_match_all($reg, $str, $matches); return $matches[1]; } function postForm($url, $fields, $referer = '') { $this->curl = curl_init($url); $this->setup(); curl_setopt($this->curl, CURLOPT_URL, $url); curl_setopt($this->curl, CURLOPT_POST, 1); curl_setopt($this->curl, CURLOPT_REFERER, $referer); curl_setopt($this->curl, CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS, $fields); return $this->request(); } function getInfo($info) { $info = ($info == 'lasturl') ? curl_getinfo($this->curl, CURLINFO_EFFECTIVE_URL) : curl_getinfo($this->curl, $info); return $info; } function request() { return curl_exec($this->curl); } } ?> And here is my curl.php file - <? include('curl.class.php'); // This path would change to where you store the file $curl = new Curl(); $url = "http://www.site.com/public/member/signin"; $fields = "MAX_FILE_SIZE=50000000&dado_form_3=1&member[email]=email&member[password]=pass&x=16&y=5&member[persistent]=true"; // Calling URL $referer = "http://www.site.com/public/member/signin"; $html = $curl->postForm($url, $fields, $referer); echo($html); ?>
<? $html = $curl->postForm('http://www.site.com/index.php','nid=443&sid=733005&tab=post&eval=yes&ad=&MAX_FILE_SIZE=10000000&ip=63.225.235.30','http://www.site.com/public/member/signin'); echo $html; // This will show you the HTML of the current page you and logged into ?> Any ideas?

  • java runtime 6 with socks v5 proxy - Possible?

    - by rwired
    I have written an application that (amongst other things) runs a local service in windows that acts as a SOCKS v5 proxy for Firefox. I'm in the debugging phase right now and have found certain websites that don't work correctly. For example the Java Applet for Picture Uploading on Facebook.com fails because is is unable to lookup domains. My app overrides a hidden FF config setting network.proxy.socks__remote__dns setting it to true. The whole purpose of the app is to allow access to websites when behind a firewall (e.g. if the user is in China), so this setting is essential to ensure domains are resolved remotely also (and not just HTTP requests). In the JRE6 settings (documented here) there isn't an equivalent setting, and since remote DNS resolution is a feature of SOCKS v5 and not v4 as the documentation seems to imply I'm worried that it's just not possible. How can I programmatically make sure the JRE uses a SOCKS v5 proxy for all requests (including DNS)? UPDATE: Steps to reproduce this problem: Make sure you are behind a firewall that blocks (or redirects) internet access including DNS Install PuTTY and add a dynamic SSH tunnel on some port number of your choice (e.g. 9870). Then login to a remote server that has full access to the internet Launch Firefox and you will not be able to browse the web In FF network settings set the SOCKS v5 proxy to localhost:9870 In FF go to about:config, change network.proxy.socks__remote__dns to true You will now be able to browse the web. Go to facebook.com, login, go to your profile and attempt to use the picture uploader java applet to add some pictures It will fail with a series of class not found errors looking similar to: load: class com.facebook.facebookphotouploader5.FacebookPhotoUploader5.class not found. I believe this is failing because the JRE is unable to resolve the domain that the class resides on. I'm basing this belief on the fact that the documentation (http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/guides/deployment/deployment-guide/properties.html) talks only about SOCKS v4 (which as far as I know does not support remote DNS). My deployment.properties file is located in %APPDATA%\Sun\Java\Deployment. I can confirm that modifications I make in the Java Control Panel get written into that file. If instead of "Use browser setting" the network settings for Java I override and attempt to use the SOCKS proxy settings manually, I still have the issue. There does not seem to be an easy way to force the JRE to do DNS remotely through the Proxy. UPDATE 2: Without the SOCKS proxy, from my local client www.facebook.com resolves to 203.161.230.171 upload.facebook.com resolves to 64.33.88.161 Neither host is reachable (because of the firewall) If I login to the remote server, I get: www.facebook.com 69.63.187.17 upload.facebook.com 69.63.178.32 Both these IPs change after a few minutes, as it seems Facebook uses round-robin DNS and other load-balancing. With the Proxy settings set in Firefox, I can navigate to www.facebook.com without any difficulty (since DNS is being resolved remotely on the Proxy). Whey I go to the page with the Java applet it fails with the stacktrace messages I've already reported. However if I edit Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts, adding the correct IP for upload.facebook.com I can get the applet to load and work correctly (restart of FF is sometimes necessary). This evidence seems to support my theory that the Java Runtime is not resolving DNS on the Proxy, but instead just routing traffic though it. My application is for mass-deployment, and needs to work with java applets on other sites (not just facebook). I really need a work-around for this problem. UPDATE 3 Stacktrace dump a requested by ZZ Coder: load: class com.facebook.facebookphotouploader5.FacebookPhotoUploader5.class not found. java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.facebook.facebookphotouploader5.FacebookPhotoUploader5.class at sun.plugin2.applet.Applet2ClassLoader.findClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2ClassLoader.loadCode(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2Manager.createApplet(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2Manager$AppletExecutionRunnable.run(Unknown Source) at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source) Caused by: java.net.SocketException: Connection reset at java.net.SocketInputStream.read(Unknown Source) at java.io.BufferedInputStream.fill(Unknown Source) at java.io.BufferedInputStream.read1(Unknown Source) at java.io.BufferedInputStream.read(Unknown Source) at sun.net.www.http.HttpClient.parseHTTPHeader(Unknown Source) at sun.net.www.http.HttpClient.parseHTTP(Unknown Source) at sun.net.www.http.HttpClient.parseHTTP(Unknown Source) at sun.net.www.protocol.http.HttpURLConnection.getInputStream(Unknown Source) at java.net.HttpURLConnection.getResponseCode(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Applet2ClassLoader.getBytes(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Applet2ClassLoader.access$000(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Applet2ClassLoader$1.run(Unknown Source) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) ... 7 more Exception: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.facebook.facebookphotouploader5.FacebookPhotoUploader5.class Dumping class loader cache... • Trouble on setting SSL certificates for Virtual Hosts using Apache\Phusion Passenger in localhost

    - by user502052
    I am using Ruby on Rails 3 and I would like to make to work HTTPS connections on localhost. I am using: Apache v2 + Phusion Passenger Mac OS + Snow Leopard v10.6.6 My Ruby on Rails installation use the Typhoeus gem (it is possible to use the Ruby net\http library but the result doesn't change) to make HTTP requests over HTTPS. I created self-signed ca.key, pjtname.crt and pjtname.key as detailed on the Apple website. Notice: Following instruction from the Apple website, on running the openssl req -new -key server.key -out server.csr command (see the link) at this point Common Name (eg, YOUR name) []: (this is the important one) I entered *pjtname.com so that is valid for all sub_domain of that site. In my Apache httpd.conf I have two virtual hosts configured in this way: # Secure (SSL/TLS) connections #Include /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-ssl.conf # # Note: The following must must be present to support # starting without SSL on platforms with no /dev/random equivalent # but a statically compiled-in mod_ssl. # <IfModule ssl_module> SSLRandomSeed startup builtin SSLRandomSeed connect builtin </IfModule> Include /private/etc/apache2/other/*.conf # Passenger configuration LoadModule passenger_module /Users/<my_user_name>/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p136/gems/passenger-3.0.2/ext/apache2/mod_passenger.so PassengerRoot /Users/<my_user_name>/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p136/gems/passenger-3.0.2 PassengerRuby /Users/<my_user_name>/.rvm/wrappers/ruby-1.9.2-p136/ruby # Go ahead and accept connections for these vhosts # from non-SNI clients SSLStrictSNIVHostCheck off # Ensure that Apache listens on port 443 Listen 443 # Listen for virtual host requests on all IP addresses NameVirtualHost *:80 NameVirtualHost *:443 # # PJTNAME.COM and subdomains SETTING # <VirtualHost *:443> # Because this virtual host is defined first, it will # be used as the default if the hostname is not received # in the SSL handshake, e.g. if the browser doesn't support # SNI. All this means that something is wrong. So, what I have to do to avoid the "Peer certificate cannot be authenticated with known CA certificates" warning and make the HTTPS request to work? Where is\are the error\errors (I think in the Apache configuration, but where?!)? P.S.: if you need some more info, let me know.

  • Build Environment setup - Using .net, java, hudson, and ruby - Could really use a critique

    - by Jeff D
    I'm trying to figure out the best way to stitch together a fast, repeatable, unbreakable build process for the following environment. I've got a plan for how to do it, but I'd really appreciate a critique. (I'd also appreciate some sample code, but more on that later) Ecosystem - Logical: Website - asp.net MVC 2, .net 3.5, Visual Studio 2010. IIS 6, Facebook iframe application application. This website/facebook app uses a few services. An internal search api, an internal read/write api, facebook, and an IP geolocation service. More details on these below Internal search api - .net, restful, built using old school .ashx handlers. The api uses lucene, and a sql server database behind the scenes. My project won't touch the lucene code, but does potentially touch the database and the web services. internal read/write api - java, restful, running on Tomcat Facebook web services A mocking site that emulates the internal read/write api, and parts of the facebook api Hudson - Runs unit tests on checkin, and creates some installers that behave inconsistently. Ecosystem - Physical: All of these machines can talk to one another, except for Hudson. Hudson can't see any of the target machines. So code must be pulled, rather than pushed. (Security thing) 1. Web Server - Holds the website, and the read/write api. (The api itself writes to a replicated sql server environment). 2. Search Server - Houses the search api. 3. Hudson Server - Does not have permissions to push to any environment. They have to pull. 4. Lucene Server 5. Database Server Problem I've been trying to set this site up to run in a stress environment, but the number of setup steps, the amount of time it takes to update a component, the black-box nature of the current installers, and the time it takes to generate data into the test system is absolutely destroying my productivity. I tweak one setting, have to redeploy, restart in a certain order, resetup some of the settings, and rebuild test data. Errors result in headscratching, and then basically starting over. Very bad. This problem is complicated further by my stress testing. I need to be able to turn on and off different external components, so that I can effectively determine the scalability of each piece. I've got strategies in place for how to do that for each dependency, but it further complicates my setup strategy, because now each component has 2 options. A mock version, or a real version. Configurations everywhere must be updated accordingly. Goals Fast - I want to drop this from a 20 minute exercise when things go perfectly, to a 3 minute one Stupid simple - I want to tell the environment what to do with as few commands as possible, and not have to remember how to stitch the environments together Repeatable - I want the script to be idempotent. Kind of a corollary to the Stupid Simple thing. The Plan So Far Here's what I've come up with so far, and what I've come looking for feedback on: Use VisualStudio's new web.config transformations to permit easily altering configs based on envrionment. This solution isn't really sufficient though. I will leave web.config set up to let the site run locally, but when deploying elsewhere, I have as many as 6 different possible outputs for the stress environment alone (because of the mocks of the various dependencies), let alone the settings for prod, QA, and dev. Each of these would then require it's own setup, or a setup that would then post-process the configs. So I'm currently leaning toward just having the dev version, and a version that converts key configuration values into a ruby string interpolation syntax. ({#VAR_NAME} kinda thing) Create a ruby script for each server that is essentially a bootstrapping script. That is to say, it will do nothing but load the ruby code that does the 'real' work from hudson/subversion, so that the script's functionality can evolve with the application, making it easy to build the site at any point in time by reference the appropriate version of the script. So in a nutshell, this script loads another script, and runs it. The 'real' ruby script will then accept commandline parameters that describe how the environment should look. From there, 1 configuration file can be used, and ruby will download the current installers, run them, post-process the configs, restart IIS/Tomcat, and kick off any data setup code that is needed. So that's it. I'm in a real time crunch to get this site stress-tested, so any feedback that you think could abbreviate the time this might take would be appreciated. That includes a shameless request for sample ruby code. I've not gotten too much further than puts "Hello World". :-) Just guidance would be helpful. Is this something that Rake would be useful for? How would you recommend I write tests for this animal? (I use interfaces and automocking frameworks to mock out things like http requests in .net. With ducktyping, it seems that this might be easier, but I don't know how to tell my code to use a fake duck in test, but a real one in practice) Thanks all. Sorry for such such a long-winded, open-ended question.

cout << data_.constData(); qDebug() << "size: " << data_.size(); } In the above function data_.constData() produces lots of text, part (very small) of it:

Die Antwoord - Fok Julle Naaiers (Mike Tyson's Words NOT DJ Hi-Teks) - YouTube

  <meta name="description" content="Some of the lyrics of "Die Antwoord" • Refresh page isnt working in asp.net using treeview

    - by Greg
    Hi, I am trying to refresh an asp.net page using this command:  On that page I have 2 treeviews. The refresh works ok when I just open the page, but when I click on one of the treeviews and expand it, the refresh stopps working and the page isnt being refreshed. Any ideas why this can happen? Is there any connection to the treeview being expanded? Here is the full code of the page: public partial class Results : System.Web.UI.Page { protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { } // Function that moves reviewed yellow card to reviewed tree protected void ycActiveTree_SelectedNodeChanged(object sender, EventArgs e) { ycActiveTree.SelectedNode.Text = "Move To Active"; ycReviewedTree.PopulateNodesFromClient = false; ycReviewedTree.Nodes[ycReviewedTree.Nodes.Count - 1].ChildNodes.Add(ycActiveTree.SelectedNode.Parent); Application["reviewedTree"] = new ArrayList(); int count = ((ArrayList)Application["activeTree"]).Count; // Move all the nodes from activeTree application to reviewedTree application for (int i = 0; Application["activeTree"] != null && i < count; i++) { ((ArrayList)Application["reviewedTree"]).Add(((ArrayList)Application["activeTree"])[i]); ((ArrayList)Application["activeTree"]).RemoveAt(0); } } protected void ycActiveTree_TreeNodePopulate(object sender, TreeNodeEventArgs e) { if (Application["idList"] != null && e.Node.Depth == 0) { string[] words = ((String)Application["idList"]).Split(' '); // Yellow Card details TreeNode child = new TreeNode(""); // Go over all the yellow card details and populate the treeview for (int i = 1; i < words.Length; i++) { child.SelectAction = TreeNodeSelectAction.None; // Same yellow card if (words[i] != "*") { // End of details and start of point ip's if (words[i] == "$") { // Add the yellow card node TreeNode yellowCardNode = new TreeNode(child.Text); yellowCardNode.SelectAction = TreeNodeSelectAction.Expand; e.Node.ChildNodes.Add(yellowCardNode); child.Text = ""; } // yellow card details else { child.Text = child.Text + words[i] + " "; } } // End of yellow card else { child.PopulateOnDemand = false; child.SelectAction = TreeNodeSelectAction.None; // Populate the yellow card node e.Node.ChildNodes[e.Node.ChildNodes.Count - 1].ChildNodes.Add(child); TreeNode moveChild = new TreeNode("Move To Reviewed"); moveChild.PopulateOnDemand = false; moveChild.SelectAction = TreeNodeSelectAction.Select; e.Node.ChildNodes[e.Node.ChildNodes.Count - 1].ChildNodes.Add(moveChild); child = new TreeNode(""); Application["activeTree"] = new ArrayList(); ((ArrayList)Application["activeTree"]).Add(e.Node.ChildNodes[e.Node.ChildNodes.Count - 1]); } } } // If there arent new yellow cards else if (Application["activeTree"] != null) { // Populate the active tree for (int i = 0; i < ((ArrayList)Application["activeTree"]).Count; i++) { e.Node.ChildNodes.Add((TreeNode)((ArrayList)Application["activeTree"])[i]); } } // If there were new yellow cards and nodes that moved from reviewed tree to active tree if (Application["idList"] != null && Application["activeTree"] != null && e.Node.ChildNodes.Count != ((ArrayList)Application["activeTree"]).Count) { for (int i = e.Node.ChildNodes.Count; i < ((ArrayList)Application["activeTree"]).Count; i++) { e.Node.ChildNodes.Add((TreeNode)((ArrayList)Application["activeTree"])[i]); } } // Nullify the yellow card id's Application["idList"] = null; } protected void ycReviewedTree_SelectedNodeChanged(object sender, EventArgs e) { ycActiveTree.PopulateNodesFromClient = false; ycReviewedTree.SelectedNode.Text = "Move To Reviewed"; ycActiveTree.Nodes[ycActiveTree.Nodes.Count - 1].ChildNodes.Add(ycReviewedTree.SelectedNode.Parent); int count = ((ArrayList)Application["reviewedTree"]).Count; // Move all the nodes from reviewedTree application to activeTree application for (int i = 0; Application["reviewedTree"] != null && i < count; i++) { ((ArrayList)Application["activeTree"]).Add(((ArrayList)Application["reviewedTree"])[i]); ((ArrayList)Application["reviewedTree"]).RemoveAt(0); } } protected void ycReviewedTree_TreeNodePopulate(object sender, TreeNodeEventArgs e) { if (Application["reviewedTree"] != null) { // Populate the reviewed tree for (int i = 0; i < ((ArrayList)Application["reviewedTree"]).Count; i++) { e.Node.ChildNodes.Add((TreeNode)((ArrayList)Application["reviewedTree"])[i]); } } } } Thanks, Greg

  • How to embed a progressbar into a HTML form?

    - by Noah Brainey
    I have this code below and want it to show the progress of a form submission of a file upload. I want it to work on my website visit it through this IP (24.148.156.217). • What's wrong with Bundler working with RubyGems to push a Git repo to Heroku?

    - by stanigator
    I've made sure that all the files are in the root of the repository as recommended in this discussion. However, as I follow the instructions in this section of the book, I can't get through the section without the problems. What do you think is happening with my system that's causing the error? I have no clue at the moment of what the problem means despite reading the following in the log. • (C++) Linking with namespaces causes duplicate symbol error

    - by user577072
    Hello. For the past few days, I have been trying to figure out how to link the files for a CLI gaming project I have been working on. There are two halves of the project, the Client and the Server code. The client needs two libraries I've made. The first is a general purpose game board. This is split between GameEngine.h and GameEngine.cpp. The header file looks something like this namespace gfdGaming { // struct sqr_size { // Index x; // Index y; // }; typedef struct { Index x, y; } sqr_size; const sqr_size sPos = {1, 1}; sqr_size sqr(Index x, Index y); sqr_size ePos; class board { // Prototypes / declarations for the class } } And the CPP file is just giving everything content #include "GameEngine.h" type gfdGaming::board::functions The client also has game-specific code (in this case, TicTacToe) split into declarations and definitions (TTT.h, Client.cpp). TTT.h is basically #include "GameEngine.h" #define TTTtar "localhost" #define TTTport 2886 using namespace gfdGaming; void* turnHandler(void*); namespace nsTicTacToe { GFDCON gfd; const char X = 'X'; const char O = 'O'; string MPhostname, mySID; board TTTboard; bool PlayerIsX = true, isMyTurn; char Player = X, Player2 = O; int recon(string* datHolder = NULL, bool force = false); void initMP(bool create = false, string hn = TTTtar); void init(); bool isTie(); int turnPlayer(Index loc, char lSym = Player); bool checkWin(char sym = Player); int mainloop(); int mainloopMP(); }; // NS I made the decision to put this in a namespace to group it instead of a class because there are some parts that would not work well in OOP, and it's much easier to implement later on. I have had trouble linking the client in the past, but this setup seems to work. My server is also split into two files, Server.h and Server.cpp. Server.h contains exactly: #include "../TicTacToe/TTT.h" // Server needs a full copy of TicTacToe code class TTTserv; struct TTTachievement_requirement { Index id; Index loc; bool inUse; }; struct TTTachievement_t { Index id; bool achieved; bool AND, inSameGame; bool inUse; bool (*lHandler)(TTTserv*); char mustBeSym; int mustBePlayer; string name, description; TTTachievement_requirement steps[safearray(8*8)]; }; class achievement_core_t : public GfdOogleTech { public: // May be shifted to private TTTachievement_t list[safearray(8*8)]; public: achievement_core_t(); int insert(string name, string d, bool samegame, bool lAnd, int lSteps[8*8], int mbP=0, char mbS=0); }; struct TTTplayer_t { Index id; bool inUse; string ip, sessionID; char sym; int desc; TTTachievement_t Ding[8*8]; }; struct TTTgame_t { TTTplayer_t Player[safearray(2)]; TTTplayer_t Spectator; achievement_core_t achievement_core; Index cTurn, players; port_t roomLoc; bool inGame, Xused, Oused, newEvent; }; class TTTserv : public gSserver { TTTgame_t Game; TTTplayer_t *cPlayer; port_t conPort; public: achievement_core_t *achiev; thread threads[8]; int parseit(string tDat, string tsIP); Index conCount; int parseit(string tDat, int tlUser, TTTplayer_t** retval); private: int parseProto(string dat, string sIP); int parseProto(string dat, int lUser); int cycleTurn(); void setup(port_t lPort = 0, bool complete = false); public: int newEvent; TTTserv(port_t tlPort = TTTport, bool tcomplete = true); TTTplayer_t* userDC(Index id, Index force = false); int sendToPlayers(string dat, bool asMSG = false); int mainLoop(volatile bool *play); }; // Other void* userHandler(void*); void* handleUser(void*); And in the CPP file I include Server.h and provide main() and the contents of all functions previously declared. Now to the problem at hand I am having issues when linking my server. More specifically, I get a duplicate symbol error for every variable in nsTicTacToe (and possibly in gfdGaming as well). Since I need the TicTacToe functions, I link Client.cpp ( without main() ) when building the server ld: duplicate symbol nsTicTacToe::PlayerIsX in Client.o and Server.o collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Command /Developer/usr/bin/g++-4.2 failed with exit code 1 It stops once a problem is encountered, but if PlayerIsX is removed / changed temporarily than another variable causes an error Essentially, I am looking for any advice on how to better organize my code to hopefully fix these errors. Disclaimers: -I apologize in advance if I provided too much or too little information, as it is my first time posting -I have tried using static and extern to fix these problems, but apparently those are not what I need Thank you to anyone who takes the time to read all of this and respond =)

  • Receiving broadcast packets using packet socket

    - by user314336
    Hello I try to send DHCP RENEW packets to the network and receive the responses. I broadcast the packet and I can see that it's successfully sent using Wireshark. But I have difficulties receiving the responses.I use packet sockets to catch the packets. I can see that there are responses to my RENEW packet using Wireshark, but my function 'packet_receive_renew' sometimes catch the packets but sometimes it can not catch the packets. I set the file descriptor using FDSET but the 'select' in my code can not realize that there are new packets for that file descriptor and timeout occurs. I couldn't make it clear that why it sometimes catches the packets and sometimes doesn't. Anybody have an idea? Thanks in advance. Hi, I have recently moved my RoR app on the Heroku platform, and almost everything works fine apart from the videos. It works fine when my app runs in local but not on heroku. • c++ to vb.net , problem with callback function

    - by johan
    I'm having a hard time here trying to find a solution for my problem. I'm trying to convert a client API funktion from C++ to VB.NET, and i think have some problems with the callback function. parts of the C++ code: typedef struct{ BYTE m_bRemoteChannel; BYTE m_bSendMode; BYTE m_nImgFormat; // =0 cif ; = 1 qcif char *m_sIPAddress; char *m_sUserName; char *m_sUserPassword; BOOL m_bUserCheck; HWND m_hShowVideo; }CLIENT_VIDEOINFO, *PCLIENT_VIDEOINFO; CPLAYER_API LONG __stdcall MP4_ClientStart(PCLIENT_VIDEOINFO pClientinfo,void(CALLBACK *ReadDataCallBack)(DWORD nPort,UCHAR *pPacketBuffer,DWORD nPacketSize)); void CALLBACK ReadDataCallBack(DWORD nPort,UCHAR *pPacketBuffer,DWORD nPacketSize) { TRACE("%d
",nPacketSize); } ..... aa5.m_sUserName = "123"; aa5.m_sUserPassword="w"; aa5.m_bUserCheck = TRUE; MP4_ClientSetTTL(64); nn1 = MP4_ClientStart(&aa5,ReadDataCallBack); if (nn1 == -1) { MessageBox("error"); return; } SDK description: MP4_ClientStart This function starts a connection. The format of the call is: LONG __stdcall MP4_ClientStart(PCLIENT_VIDEOINFO pClientinfo, void(*ReadDataCallBack)(DWORD nChannel,UCHAR *pPacketBuffer,DWORD nPacketSize)) Parameters pClientinfo holds the information. of this connection. nChannel holds the channel of card. pPacketBuffer holds the pointer to the receive buffer. nPacketSize holds the length of the receive buffer. Return Values If the function succeeds the return value is the context of this connection. If the function fails the return value is -1. Remarks typedef struct{ BYTE m_bRemoteChannel; BYTE m_bSendMode; BYTE m_bImgFormat; char *m_sIPAddress; char *m_sUserName; char *m_sUserPassword; BOOL m_bUserCheck; HWND m_hShowVideo; } CLIENT_VIDEOINFO, * PCLIENT_VIDEOINFO; m_bRemoteChannel holds the channel which the client wants to connect to. m_bSendMode holds the network mode of the connection. m_bImgFormat : Image format, 0 is main channel video, 1 is sub channel video m_sIPAddress holds the IP address of the server. m_sUserName holds the user’s name. m_sUserPassword holds the user’s password. m_bUserCheck holds the value whether sends the user’s name and password or not. m_hShowVideo holds Handle for this video window. If m_hShowVideo holds NULL, the client can be record only without decoder. If m_bUserCheck is FALSE, we will send m_sUserName and m_sUserPassword as NULL, else we will send each 50 bytes. The length of m_sIPAddress and m_sUserName must be more than 50 bytes. ReadDataCallBack: When the library receives a packet from a server, this callback is called. • Does my basic PHP Socket Server need optimization?

    - by Tom
    Like many people, I can do a lot of things with PHP. One problem I do face constantly is that other people can do it much cleaner, much more organized and much more structured. This also results in much faster execution times and much less bugs. I just finished writing a basic PHP Socket Server (the real core), and am asking you if you can tell me what I should do different before I start expanding the core. I'm not asking about improvements such as encrypted data, authentication or multi-threading. I'm more wondering about questions like "should I maybe do it in a more object oriented way (using PHP5)?", or "is the general structure of the way the script works good, or should some things be done different?". Basically, "is this how the core of a socket server should work?" In fact, I think that if I just show you the code here many of you will immediately see room for improvements. Please be so kind to tell me. Thanks! #!/usr/bin/php -q <? // config $timelimit = 180; // amount of seconds the server should run for, 0 = run indefintely $address = $_SERVER['SERVER_ADDR']; // the server's external IP $port = 9000; // the port to listen on $backlog = SOMAXCONN; // the maximum of backlog incoming connections that will be queued for processing // configure custom PHP settings error_reporting(1); // report all errors ini_set('display_errors', 1); // display all errors set_time_limit($timelimit); // timeout after x seconds ob_implicit_flush(); // results in a flush operation after every output call //create master IPv4 based TCP socket if (!($master = socket_create(AF_INET, SOCK_STREAM, SOL_TCP))) die("Could not create master socket, error: ".socket_strerror(socket_last_error())); // set socket options (local addresses can be reused) if (!socket_set_option($master, SOL_SOCKET, SO_REUSEADDR, 1)) die("Could not set socket options, error: ".socket_strerror(socket_last_error())); // bind to socket server if (!socket_bind($master, $address, $port)) die("Could not bind to socket server, error: ".socket_strerror(socket_last_error())); // start listening if (!socket_listen($master, $backlog)) die("Could not start listening to socket, error: ".socket_strerror(socket_last_error())); //display startup information echo "[".date('Y-m-d H:i:s')."] SERVER CREATED (MAXCONN: ".SOMAXCONN.").
"; //max connections is a kernel variable and can be adjusted with sysctl echo "[".date('Y-m-d H:i:s')."] Listening on ".$address.":".$port.".
"; $time = time(); //set startup timestamp // init read sockets array $read_sockets = array($master); // continuously handle incoming socket messages, or close if time limit has been reached while ((!$timelimit) or (time() - $time < $timelimit)) { $changed_sockets = $read_sockets; socket_select($changed_sockets, $write = null, $except = null, null); foreach($changed_sockets as $socket) { if ($socket == $master) { if (($client = socket_accept($master)) < 0) { echo "[".date('Y-m-d H:i:s')."] Socket_accept() failed, error: ".socket_strerror(socket_last_error())."
"; continue; } else { array_push($read_sockets, $client); echo "[".date('Y-m-d H:i:s')."] Client #".count($read_sockets)." connected (connections: ".count($read_sockets)."/".SOMAXCONN.")
"; } } else { $data = @socket_read($socket, 1024, PHP_NORMAL_READ); //read a maximum of 1024 bytes until a new line has been sent if ($data === false) { //the client disconnected $index = array_search($socket, $read_sockets); unset($read_sockets[$index]); socket_close($socket); echo "[".date('Y-m-d H:i:s')."] Client #".($index-1)." disconnected (connections: ".count($read_sockets)."/".SOMAXCONN.")
"; } else { if ($data = trim($data)) { //remove whitespace and continue only if the message is not empty switch ($data) { case
//close connection when exit command is given $index = array_search($socket, $read_sockets); unset($read_sockets[$index]); socket_close($socket); echo "[".date('Y-m-d H:i:s')."] Client #".($index-1)." disconnected (connections: ".count($read_sockets)."/".SOMAXCONN.")
"; break; default: //for experimental purposes, write the given data back socket_write($socket, "
you wrote: ".$data); } } } } } } socket_close($master); //close the socket echo "[".date('Y-m-d H:i:s')."] SERVER CLOSED.
"; ?>

  • Preventing FIN_WAIT2 when closing socket

    - by patrickvacek
    I have a server program that connects to another program via a given socket, and in certain cases I need to close the connection and almost immediately re-open it on the same socket. This by and large works, except that I have to wait exactly one minute for the socket to reset. In the meantime, netstat indicates that the server sees the socket in FIN_WAIT2 and the client sees it as CLOSE_WAIT. I'm already using SO_REUSEADDR, which I thought would prevent the wait, but that isn't doing the trick. Setting SO_LINGER to zero also does not help. What else can I do to resolve this? Here are the relevant code snippets: SetUpSocket() { // Set up the socket and listen for a connection from the exelerate client. // Open a TCP/IP socket. m_baseSock = socket(PF_INET, SOCK_STREAM, IPPROTO_IP); if (m_baseSock < 0) { return XERROR; } // Set the socket options to reuse local addresses. int flag = 1; if (setsockopt(m_baseSock, SOL_SOCKET, SO_REUSEADDR, &flag, sizeof(flag)) == -1) { return XERROR; } // Set the socket options to prevent lingering after closing the socket. //~ linger li = {1,0}; //~ if (setsockopt(m_baseSock, SOL_SOCKET, SO_LINGER, &li, sizeof(li)) == -1) //~ { //~ return XERROR; //~ } // Bind the socket to the address of the current host and our given port. struct sockaddr_in addr; memset(&addr, 0, sizeof(addr)); addr.sin_family = AF_INET; addr.sin_addr.s_addr = INADDR_ANY; addr.sin_port = htons(m_port); if (bind(m_baseSock, (struct sockaddr*)&addr, sizeof(addr)) != 0) { return XERROR; } // Tell the socket to listen for a connection from client. if (listen(m_baseSock, 4) != 0) { return XERROR; } return XSUCCESS; } ConnectSocket() { // Add the socket to a file descriptor set. fd_set readfds; FD_ZERO(&readfds); FD_SET(m_baseSock, &readfds); // Set timeout to ten seconds. Plenty of time. struct timeval timeout; timeout.tv_sec = 10; timeout.tv_usec = 0; // Check to see if the socket is ready for reading. int numReady = select(m_baseSock + 1, &readfds, NULL, NULL, &timeout); if (numReady > 0) { int flags = fcntl(m_baseSock, F_GETFL, 0); fcntl(m_baseSock, flags | O_NONBLOCK, 1); // Wait for a connection attempt from the client. Do not block - we shouldn't // need to since we just selected. m_connectedSock = accept(m_baseSock, NULL, NULL); if (m_connectedSock > 0) { m_failedSend = false; m_logout = false; // Spawn a thread to accept commands from client. CreateThread(&m_controlThread, ControlThread, (void *)&m_connectedSock); return XSUCCESS; } } return XERROR; } ControlThread(void *arg) { // Get the socket from the argument. socket sock = *((socket*)arg); while (true) { // Add the socket to a file descriptor set. fd_set readfds; FD_ZERO(&readfds); FD_SET(sock, &readfds); // Set timeout to ten seconds. Plenty of time. struct timeval timeout; timeout.tv_sec = 10; timeout.tv_usec = 0; // Check if there is any readable data on the socket. int num_ready = select(sock + 1, &readfds, NULL, NULL, &timeout); if (num_ready < 0) { return NULL; } // If there is data, read it. else if (num_ready > 0) { // Check the read buffer. xuint8 buf[128]; ssize_t size_read = recv(sock, buf, sizeof(buf)); if (size_read > 0) { // Get the message out of the buffer. char msg = *buf; if (msg == CONNECTED) { // Do some things... } // If we get the log-out message, log out. else if (msg == LOGOUT) { return NULL; } } } } // while return NULL; } ~Server() { // Close the sockets. if (m_baseSock != SOCKET_ERROR) { close(m_baseSock); m_baseSock = SOCKET_ERROR; } if (m_connectedSock != SOCKET_ERROR) { close(m_connectedSock); m_connectedSock = SOCKET_ERROR; } } SOCKET_ERROR is equal to -1. The server object gets destroyed, at which point the connection should close, and then recreated, at which point the SetUpSocket() and ConnectSocket() routines are called. So why do I have to wait a minute for the socket to clear? Any ideas would be appreaciated.

    In my application i need to load the images in list view, when using locale(ip ported url) then no problem all images are loading properly, But when using live url then the images are not loading, My image loader class: public class ImageLoader { MemoryCache memoryCache = new MemoryCache(); FileCache fileCache; private Map<ImageView, String> imageViews = Collections .synchronizedMap(new WeakHashMap<ImageView, String>()); ExecutorService executorService; public ImageLoader(Context context) { fileCache = new FileCache(context); executorService = Executors.newFixedThreadPool(5); } final int stub_id = R.drawable.appointeesample; public void DisplayImage(String url, ImageView imageView) { imageViews.put(imageView, url); Bitmap bitmap = memoryCache.get(url); if (bitmap != null) imageView.setImageBitmap(bitmap); else { Log.d("stub", "stub" + stub_id); queuePhoto(url, imageView); imageView.setImageResource(stub_id); } } private void queuePhoto(String url, ImageView imageView) { PhotoToLoad p = new PhotoToLoad(url, imageView); executorService.submit(new PhotosLoader(p)); } private Bitmap getBitmap(String url) { File f = fileCache.getFile(url); // from SD cache Bitmap b = decodeFile(f); if (b != null) return b; // from web try { Bitmap bitmap = null; URL imageUrl = new URL(url); HttpURLConnection conn = (HttpURLConnection) imageUrl .openConnection(); conn.setConnectTimeout(30000); conn.setReadTimeout(30000); conn.setInstanceFollowRedirects(true); InputStream is = conn.getInputStream(); BufferedInputStream bis = new BufferedInputStream(is, 81960); BitmapFactory.Options opts = new BitmapFactory.Options(); opts.inJustDecodeBounds = true; OutputStream os = new FileOutputStream(f); Utils.CopyStream(bis, os); os.close(); bitmap = decodeFile(f); Log.d("bitmap", "Bit map" + bitmap); return bitmap; } catch (Exception ex) { ex.printStackTrace(); return null; } } // decodes image and scales it to reduce memory consumption private Bitmap decodeFile(File f) { try { try { BitmapFactory.Options o = new BitmapFactory.Options(); o.inJustDecodeBounds = true; BitmapFactory.decodeStream(new FileInputStream(f), null, o); final int REQUIRED_SIZE = 200; int scale = 1; while (o.outWidth / scale / 2 >= REQUIRED_SIZE && o.outHeight / scale / 2 >= REQUIRED_SIZE) scale *= 2; BitmapFactory.Options o2 = new BitmapFactory.Options(); o2.inSampleSize = scale; return BitmapFactory.decodeStream(new FileInputStream(f), null, o2); } catch (FileNotFoundException e) { } finally { System.gc(); } return null; } catch (Exception e) { } return null; } // Task for the queue private class PhotoToLoad { public String url; public ImageView imageView; public PhotoToLoad(String u, ImageView i) { url = u; imageView = i; } } class PhotosLoader implements Runnable { PhotoToLoad photoToLoad; PhotosLoader(PhotoToLoad photoToLoad) { this.photoToLoad = photoToLoad; } @Override public void run() { if (imageViewReused(photoToLoad)) return; Bitmap bmp = getBitmap(photoToLoad.url); memoryCache.put(photoToLoad.url, bmp); if (imageViewReused(photoToLoad)) return; BitmapDisplayer bd = new BitmapDisplayer(bmp, photoToLoad); Activity a = (Activity) photoToLoad.imageView.getContext(); a.runOnUiThread(bd); } } boolean imageViewReused(PhotoToLoad photoToLoad) { String tag = imageViews.get(photoToLoad.imageView); if (tag == null || !tag.equals(photoToLoad.url)) return true; return false; } // Used to display bitmap in the UI thread class BitmapDisplayer implements Runnable { Bitmap bitmap; PhotoToLoad photoToLoad; public BitmapDisplayer(Bitmap b, PhotoToLoad p) { bitmap = b; photoToLoad = p; } public void run() { if (imageViewReused(photoToLoad)) return; if (bitmap != null) photoToLoad.imageView.setImageBitmap(bitmap); else photoToLoad.imageView.setImageResource(stub_id); } } public void clearCache() { memoryCache.clear(); fileCache.clear(); } My Live Image url for Example: https://goappointed.com/images_upload/3330Torana_Logo.JPG I have referred google but no solution is working, Thanks a lot in advance.

  • Sockets: Transport endpoint is not connected on send

    - by TheoretiCAL
    I'm trying to learn socket programming from http://beej.us/guide/bgnet/output/html/singlepage/bgnet.html and am attempting to build a SOCK_STREAM client/server. My client: #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <unistd.h> #include <errno.h> #include <string.h> #include <sys/types.h> #include <sys/socket.h> #include <netinet/in.h> #include <arpa/inet.h> #include <netdb.h> #define SERVERPORT "4951" // the port users will be connecting to int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { int sockfd; struct addrinfo hints, *servinfo, *p; int rv; int numbytes; if (argc != 3) { fprintf(stderr,"usage: talker hostname message
"); exit(1); } memset(&hints, 0, sizeof hints); hints.ai_family = AF_UNSPEC; hints.ai_socktype = SOCK_STREAM; if ((rv = getaddrinfo(argv[1], SERVERPORT, &hints, &servinfo)) != 0) { fprintf(stderr, "getaddrinfo: %s
", gai_strerror(rv)); return 1; } // loop through all the results and make a socket for(p = servinfo; p != NULL; p = p->ai_next) { if ((sockfd = socket(p->ai_family, p->ai_socktype, p->ai_protocol)) == -1) { perror("talker: socket"); continue; if (connect(sockfd, p->ai_addr, p->ai_addrlen) == -1) { close(sockfd); perror("client: connect"); continue; } } break; } if (p == NULL) { fprintf(stderr, "talker: failed to bind socket
"); return 2; } if ((numbytes = send(sockfd, argv[2], strlen(argv[2]), 0) == -1)) { perror("talker: send"); exit(1); } freeaddrinfo(servinfo); printf("talker: sent %d bytes to %s
", numbytes, argv[1]); close(sockfd); return 0; } Server: #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <unistd.h> #include <errno.h> #include <string.h> #include <sys/types.h> #include <sys/socket.h> #include <netinet/in.h> #include <arpa/inet.h> #include <netdb.h> #define MYPORT "4951" // the port users will be connecting to #define MAXBUFLEN 100 static int backlog = 10; // get sockaddr, IPv4 or IPv6: void *get_in_addr(struct sockaddr *sa) { if (sa->sa_family == AF_INET) { return &(((struct sockaddr_in*)sa)->sin_addr); } return &(((struct sockaddr_in6*)sa)->sin6_addr); } int main(void) { int sockfd; struct addrinfo hints, *servinfo, *p; int rv; int numbytes; int new_fd; socklen_t addr_size; struct sockaddr_storage their_addr; char buf[MAXBUFLEN]; char s[INET6_ADDRSTRLEN]; memset(&hints, 0, sizeof hints); hints.ai_family = AF_UNSPEC; // set to AF_INET to force IPv4 hints.ai_socktype = SOCK_STREAM; hints.ai_flags = AI_PASSIVE; // use my IP if ((rv = getaddrinfo(NULL, MYPORT, &hints, &servinfo)) != 0) { fprintf(stderr, "getaddrinfo: %s
", gai_strerror(rv)); return 1; } // loop through all the results and bind to the first we can for(p = servinfo; p != NULL; p = p->ai_next) { if ((sockfd = socket(p->ai_family, p->ai_socktype, p->ai_protocol)) == -1) { perror("listener: socket"); continue; } int yes=1; // lose the pesky "Address already in use" error message if (setsockopt(sockfd,SOL_SOCKET,SO_REUSEADDR,&yes,sizeof(int)) == -1) { perror("setsockopt"); exit(1); } if (bind(sockfd, p->ai_addr, p->ai_addrlen) == -1) { close(sockfd); perror("listener: bind"); continue; } if (listen(sockfd,backlog) == -1){ close(sockfd); perror("listener:listen"); continue; } break; } if (p == NULL) { fprintf(stderr, "listener: failed to bind socket
"); return 2; } freeaddrinfo(servinfo); printf("listener: waiting to recv..
"); while(1){ addr_size = sizeof their_addr; if ((new_fd = accept(sockfd, (struct sockaddr *)&their_addr, &addr_size))==-1){ perror("accept"); exit(1); } if ((numbytes = recv(new_fd, buf, MAXBUFLEN-1 , 0) == -1)) { perror("recv"); exit(1); } printf("listener: got packet from %s
", inet_ntop(their_addr.ss_family, get_in_addr((struct sockaddr *)&their_addr), s, sizeof s)); printf("listener: packet is %d bytes long
", numbytes); buf[numbytes] = '\0'; printf("listener: packet contains "%s"
", buf); close(sockfd); } return 0; } Upon executing the client, I get " send: Transport endpoint is not connected" and I'm not sure where I went wrong. Thanks.

  • How to find and fix issue with Pound and HAProxy

    - by javano
    Pound sits in front of HAProxy (on the same box) to perform SSL off-load. Requests are passed to 127.0.0.1:80 where HAProxy then balances the requests across backend servers for a hosted ASP .NET web app. A user is getting HTTP error 500 (Internal Server Error) returned to their browser this morning and I can see it is comming from Pound. They see no log entry in their web app (IIS) server logs, so its not hitting the back end servers. I think the problem is possibly with HAProxy. Lets review the logs: Initialy the users (1.2.3.4) hits Pound on the load balancer: Nov 12 10:02:24 lb1 pound: a-website.com 1.2.3.4 - - [12/Nov/2012:10:02:23 +0000] "POST /eventmanagement/EditEvent.aspx?eventOid=623fc423-2329-4cab-8be5-72a97709570d HTTP/1.1" 200 155721 "https://a-website.com/eventmanagement/EditEvent.aspx?eventOid=623fc423-2329-4cab-8be5-72a97709570d" "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.2; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/22.0.1229.96 Safari/537.4" Nov 12 10:02:24 lb1 pound: a-website.com 1.2.3.4 - - [12/Nov/2012:10:02:24 +0000] "GET /Controls/ReferringOrganisationLogoImageHandler.ashx HTTP/1.1" 200 142 "https://a-website.com/eventmanagement/EditEvent.aspx?eventOid=623fc423-2329-4cab-8be5-72a97709570d" "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.2; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/22.0.1229.96 Safari/537.4" Nov 12 10:02:24 lb1 pound: a-website.com 1.2.3.4 - - [12/Nov/2012:10:02:24 +0000] "GET /eventmanagement/WebCoreModule.ashx?__ac=1&__ac_wcmid=RAWCIL&__ac_lib=Radactive.WebControls.ILoad&__ac_key=RAWVCO_11&__ac_sid=fnoz2hmvirfivb2btbubbw45&__ac_cn=&__ac_cp=BVDXDWFLDWFMHDFJBOEGBDFLFOD5EEFD&__ac_fr=634883113445054092&__ac_ssid= HTTP/1.1" 200 11206 "https://a-website.com/eventmanagement/EditEvent.aspx?eventOid=623fc423-2329-4cab-8be5-72a97709570d" "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.2; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/22.0.1229.96 Safari/537.4" Nov 12 10:02:24 lb1 pound: a-website.com 1.2.3.4 - - [12/Nov/2012:10:02:24 +0000] "GET /eventmanagement/WebCoreModule.ashx?__ac=1&__ac_wcmid=RAWCIL&__ac_lib=Radactive.WebControls.ILoad&__ac_key=RAWCCIL_11&__ac_sid=fnoz2hmvirfivb2btbubbw45&__ac_cn=&__ac_cp=BVDXDWFLDWFMHDFJBOEGBDFLFOD5EEFD&__ac_fr=634883113445054092 HTTP/1.1" 200 43496 "https://a-website.com/eventmanagement/EditEvent.aspx?eventOid=623fc423-2329-4cab-8be5-72a97709570d" "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.2; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/22.0.1229.96 Safari/537.4" Nov 12 10:02:42 lb1 pound: (7f819fff8700) e500 for 1.2.3.4 response error read from 127.0.0.1:80/POST /eventmanagement/EditEvent.aspx?eventOid=623fc423-2329-4cab-8be5-72a97709570d HTTP/1.1: Connection timed out (15.121 secs) Above we can see the request comming in from the user at IP address 1.2.3.4, eventually Pound returns error 500 with the message "Connection timed out (15.121 secs)". • Windows Azure: Backup Services Release, Hyper-V Recovery Manager, VM Enhancements, Enhanced Enterprise Management Support

    - by ScottGu
    This morning we released a huge set of updates to Windows Azure. These new capabilities include: Backup Services: General Availability of Windows Azure Backup Services Hyper-V Recovery Manager: Public preview of Windows Azure Hyper-V Recovery Manager Virtual Machines: Delete Attached Disks, Availability Set Warnings, SQL AlwaysOn Configuration Active Directory: Securely manage hundreds of SaaS applications Enterprise Management: Use Active Directory to Better Manage Windows Azure Windows Azure SDK 2.2: A massive update of our SDK + Visual Studio tooling support All of these improvements are now available to use immediately. Below are more details about them. Backup Service: General Availability Release of Windows Azure Backup Today we are releasing Windows Azure Backup Service as a general availability service. This release is now live in production, backed by an enterprise SLA, supported by Microsoft Support, and is ready to use for production scenarios. Windows Azure Backup is a cloud based backup solution for Windows Server which allows files and folders to be backed up and recovered from the cloud, and provides off-site protection against data loss. The service provides IT administrators and developers with the option to back up and protect critical data in an easily recoverable way from any location with no upfront hardware cost. Windows Azure Backup is built on the Windows Azure platform and uses Windows Azure blob storage for storing customer data. Windows Server uses the downloadable Windows Azure Backup Agent to transfer file and folder data securely and efficiently to the Windows Azure Backup Service. Along with providing cloud backup for Windows Server, Windows Azure Backup Service also provides capability to backup data from System Center Data Protection Manager and Windows Server Essentials, to the cloud. All data is encrypted onsite before it is sent to the cloud, and customers retain and manage the encryption key (meaning the data is stored entirely secured and can’t be decrypted by anyone but yourself). Getting Started To get started with the Windows Azure Backup Service, create a new Backup Vault within the Windows Azure Management Portal. Click New->Data Services->Recovery Services->Backup Vault to do this: Once the backup vault is created you’ll be presented with a simple tutorial that will help guide you on how to register your Windows Servers with it: Once the servers you want to backup are registered, you can use the appropriate local management interface (such as the Microsoft Management Console snap-in, System Center Data Protection Manager Console, or Windows Server Essentials Dashboard) to configure the scheduled backups and to optionally initiate recoveries. You can follow these tutorials to learn more about how to do this: Tutorial: Schedule Backups Using the Windows Azure Backup Agent This tutorial helps you with setting up a backup schedule for your registered Windows Servers. Additionally, it also explains how to use Windows PowerShell cmdlets to set up a custom backup schedule. Tutorial: Recover Files and Folders Using the Windows Azure Backup Agent This tutorial helps you with recovering data from a backup. Additionally, it also explains how to use Windows PowerShell cmdlets to do the same tasks. Below are some of the key benefits the Windows Azure Backup Service provides: Simple configuration and management. Windows Azure Backup Service integrates with the familiar Windows Server Backup utility in Windows Server, the Data Protection Manager component in System Center and Windows Server Essentials, in order to provide a seamless backup and recovery experience to a local disk, or to the cloud. Block level incremental backups. The Windows Azure Backup Agent performs incremental backups by tracking file and block level changes and only transferring the changed blocks, hence reducing the storage and bandwidth utilization. Different point-in-time versions of the backups use storage efficiently by only storing the changes blocks between these versions. Data compression, encryption and throttling. The Windows Azure Backup Agent ensures that data is compressed and encrypted on the server before being sent to the Windows Azure Backup Service over the network. As a result, the Windows Azure Backup Service only stores encrypted data in the cloud storage. The encryption key is not available to the Windows Azure Backup Service, and as a result the data is never decrypted in the service. Also, users can setup throttling and configure how the Windows Azure Backup service utilizes the network bandwidth when backing up or restoring information. Data integrity is verified in the cloud. In addition to the secure backups, the backed up data is also automatically checked for integrity once the backup is done. As a result, any corruptions which may arise due to data transfer can be easily identified and are fixed automatically. Configurable retention policies for storing data in the cloud. The Windows Azure Backup Service accepts and implements retention policies to recycle backups that exceed the desired retention range, thereby meeting business policies and managing backup costs. Hyper-V Recovery Manager: Now Available in Public Preview I’m excited to also announce the public preview of a new Windows Azure Service – the Windows Azure Hyper-V Recovery Manager (HRM). Windows Azure Hyper-V Recovery Manager helps protect your business critical services by coordinating the replication and recovery of System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 SP1 and System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2 private clouds at a secondary location. With automated protection, asynchronous ongoing replication, and orderly recovery, the Hyper-V Recovery Manager service can help you implement Disaster Recovery and restore important services accurately, consistently, and with minimal downtime. Application data in an Hyper-V Recovery Manager scenarios always travels on your on-premise replication channel. Only metadata (such as names of logical clouds, virtual machines, networks etc.) that is needed for orchestration is sent to Azure. All traffic sent to/from Azure is encrypted. You can begin using Windows Azure Hyper-V Recovery today by clicking New->Data Services->Recovery Services->Hyper-V Recovery Manager within the Windows Azure Management Portal. You can read more about Windows Azure Hyper-V Recovery Manager in Brad Anderson’s 9-part series, Transform the datacenter. To learn more about setting up Hyper-V Recovery Manager follow our detailed step-by-step guide. Virtual Machines: Delete Attached Disks, Availability Set Warnings, SQL AlwaysOn Today’s Windows Azure release includes a number of nice updates to Windows Azure Virtual Machines. These improvements include: Ability to Delete both VM Instances + Attached Disks in One Operation Prior to today’s release, when you deleted VMs within Windows Azure we would delete the VM instance – but not delete the drives attached to the VM. You had to manually delete these yourself from the storage account. With today’s update we’ve added a convenience option that now allows you to either retain or delete the attached disks when you delete the VM: We’ve also added the ability to delete a cloud service, its deployments, and its role instances with a single action. This can either be a cloud service that has production and staging deployments with web and worker roles, or a cloud service that contains virtual machines. To do this, simply select the Cloud Service within the Windows Azure Management Portal and click the “Delete” button: Warnings on Availability Sets with Only One Virtual Machine In Them One of the nice features that Windows Azure Virtual Machines supports is the concept of “Availability Sets”. An “availability set” allows you to define a tier/role (e.g. webfrontends, databaseservers, etc) that you can map Virtual Machines into – and when you do this Windows Azure separates them across fault domains and ensures that at least one of them is always available during servicing operations. This enables you to deploy applications in a high availability way. One issue we’ve seen some customers run into is where they define an availability set, but then forget to map more than one VM into it (which defeats the purpose of having an availability set). With today’s release we now display a warning in the Windows Azure Management Portal if you have only one virtual machine deployed in an availability set to help highlight this: You can learn more about configuring the availability of your virtual machines here. Configuring SQL Server Always On SQL Server Always On is a great feature that you can use with Windows Azure to enable high availability and DR scenarios with SQL Server. Today’s Windows Azure release makes it even easier to configure SQL Server Always On by enabling “Direct Server Return” endpoints to be configured and managed within the Windows Azure Management Portal. Previously, setting this up required using PowerShell to complete the endpoint configuration. Starting today you can enable this simply by checking the “Direct Server Return” checkbox: You can learn more about how to use direct server return for SQL Server AlwaysOn availability groups here. Active Directory: Application Access Enhancements This summer we released our initial preview of our Application Access Enhancements for Windows Azure Active Directory. This service enables you to securely implement single-sign-on (SSO) support against SaaS applications (including Office 365, SalesForce, Workday, Box, Google Apps, GitHub, etc) as well as LOB based applications (including ones built with the new Windows Azure AD support we shipped last week with ASP.NET and VS 2013). Since the initial preview we’ve enhanced our SAML federation capabilities, integrated our new password vaulting system, and shipped multi-factor authentication support. We've also turned on our outbound identity provisioning system and have it working with hundreds of additional SaaS Applications: Earlier this month we published an update on dates and pricing for when the service will be released in general availability form. In this blog post we announced our intention to release the service in general availability form by the end of the year. We also announced that the below features would be available in a free tier with it: SSO to every SaaS app we integrate with – Users can Single Sign On to any app we are integrated with at no charge. This includes all the top SAAS Apps and every app in our application gallery whether they use federation or password vaulting. Application access assignment and removal – IT Admins can assign access privileges to web applications to the users in their active directory assuring that every employee has access to the SAAS Apps they need. And when a user leaves the company or changes jobs, the admin can just as easily remove their access privileges assuring data security and minimizing IP loss User provisioning (and de-provisioning) – IT admins will be able to automatically provision users in 3rd party SaaS applications like Box, Salesforce.com, GoToMeeting, DropBox and others. We are working with key partners in the ecosystem to establish these connections, meaning you no longer have to continually update user records in multiple systems. Security and auditing reports – Security is a key priority for us. With the free version of these enhancements you'll get access to our standard set of access reports giving you visibility into which users are using which applications, when they were using them and where they are using them from. In addition, we'll alert you to un-usual usage patterns for instance when a user logs in from multiple locations at the same time. Our Application Access Panel – Users are logging in from every type of devices including Windows, iOS, & Android. Not all of these devices handle authentication in the same manner but the user doesn't care. They need to access their apps from the devices they love. Our Application Access Panel will support the ability for users to access access and launch their apps from any device and anywhere. You can learn more about our plans for application management with Windows Azure Active Directory here. Try out the preview and start using it today. Enterprise Management: Use Active Directory to Better Manage Windows Azure Windows Azure Active Directory provides the ability to manage your organization in a directory which is hosted entirely in the cloud, or alternatively kept in sync with an on-premises Windows Server Active Directory solution (allowing you to seamlessly integrate with the directory you already have). With today’s Windows Azure release we are integrating Windows Azure Active Directory even more within the core Windows Azure management experience, and enabling an even richer enterprise security offering. Specifically: 1) All Windows Azure accounts now have a default Windows Azure Active Directory created for them. You can create and map any users you want into this directory, and grant administrative rights to manage resources in Windows Azure to these users. 2) You can keep this directory entirely hosted in the cloud – or optionally sync it with your on-premises Windows Server Active Directory. Both options are free. The later approach is ideal for companies that wish to use their corporate user identities to sign-in and manage Windows Azure resources. It also ensures that if an employee leaves an organization, his or her access control rights to the company’s Windows Azure resources are immediately revoked. 3) The Windows Azure Service Management APIs have been updated to support using Windows Azure Active Directory credentials to sign-in and perform management operations. Prior to today’s release customers had to download and use management certificates (which were not scoped to individual users) to perform management operations. We still support this management certificate approach (don’t worry – nothing will stop working). But we think the new Windows Azure Active Directory authentication support enables an even easier and more secure way for customers to manage resources going forward. 4) The Windows Azure SDK 2.2 release (which is also shipping today) includes built-in support for the new Service Management APIs that authenticate with Windows Azure Active Directory, and now allow you to create and manage Windows Azure applications and resources directly within Visual Studio using your Active Directory credentials. This, combined with updated PowerShell scripts that also support Active Directory, enables an end-to-end enterprise authentication story with Windows Azure. Below are some details on how all of this works: Subscriptions within a Directory As part of today’s update, we have associated all existing Window Azure accounts with a Windows Azure Active Directory (and created one for you if you don’t already have one). When you login to the Windows Azure Management Portal you’ll now see the directory name in the URI of the browser. For example, in the screen-shot below you can see that I have a “scottgu” directory that my subscriptions are hosted within: Note that you can continue to use Microsoft Accounts (formerly known as Microsoft Live IDs) to sign-into Windows Azure. These map just fine to a Windows Azure Active Directory – so there is no need to create new usernames that are specific to a directory if you don’t want to. In the scenario above I’m actually logged in using my @hotmail.com based Microsoft ID which is now mapped to a “scottgu” active directory that was created for me. By default everything will continue to work just like you used to before. Manage your Directory You can manage an Active Directory (including the one we now create for you by default) by clicking the “Active Directory” tab in the left-hand side of the portal. This will list all of the directories in your account. Clicking one the first time will display a getting started page that provides documentation and links to perform common tasks with it: You can use the built-in directory management support within the Windows Azure Management Portal to add/remove/manage users within the directory, enable multi-factor authentication, associate a custom domain (e.g. mycompanyname.com) with the directory, and/or rename the directory to whatever friendly name you want (just click the configure tab to do this). You can also setup the directory to automatically sync with an on-premises Active Directory using the “Directory Integration” tab. Note that users within a directory by default do not have admin rights to login or manage Windows Azure based resources. You still need to explicitly grant them co-admin permissions on a subscription for them to login or manage resources in Windows Azure. You can do this by clicking the Settings tab on the left-hand side of the portal and then by clicking the administrators tab within it. Sign-In Integration within Visual Studio If you install the new Windows Azure SDK 2.2 release, you can now connect to Windows Azure from directly inside Visual Studio without having to download any management certificates. You can now just right-click on the “Windows Azure” icon within the Server Explorer and choose the “Connect to Windows Azure” context menu option to do so: Doing this will prompt you to enter the email address of the username you wish to sign-in with (make sure this account is a user in your directory with co-admin rights on a subscription): You can use either a Microsoft Account (e.g. Windows Live ID) or an Active Directory based Organizational account as the email. The dialog will update with an appropriate login prompt depending on which type of email address you enter: Once you sign-in you’ll see the Windows Azure resources that you have permissions to manage show up automatically within the Visual Studio server explorer and be available to start using: No downloading of management certificates required. All of the authentication was handled using your Windows Azure Active Directory! Manage Subscriptions across Multiple Directories If you have already have multiple directories and multiple subscriptions within your Windows Azure account, we have done our best to create a good default mapping of your subscriptions->directories as part of today’s update. If you don’t like the default subscription-to-directory mapping we have done you can click the Settings tab in the left-hand navigation of the Windows Azure Management Portal and browse to the Subscriptions tab within it: If you want to map a subscription under a different directory in your account, simply select the subscription from the list, and then click the “Edit Directory” button to choose which directory to map it to. Mapping a subscription to a different directory takes only seconds and will not cause any of the resources within the subscription to recycle or stop working. We’ve made the directory->subscription mapping process self-service so that you always have complete control and can map things however you want. Filtering By Directory and Subscription Within the Windows Azure Management Portal you can filter resources in the portal by subscription (allowing you to show/hide different subscriptions). If you have subscriptions mapped to multiple directory tenants, we also now have a filter drop-down that allows you to filter the subscription list by directory tenant. This filter is only available if you have multiple subscriptions mapped to multiple directories within your Windows Azure Account: Windows Azure SDK 2.2 Today we are also releasing a major update of our Windows Azure SDK. The Windows Azure SDK 2.2 release adds some great new features including: Visual Studio 2013 Support Integrated Windows Azure Sign-In support within Visual Studio Remote Debugging Cloud Services with Visual Studio Firewall Management support within Visual Studio for SQL Databases Visual Studio 2013 RTM VM Images for MSDN Subscribers Windows Azure Management Libraries for .NET Updated Windows Azure PowerShell Cmdlets and ScriptCenter I’ll post a follow-up blog shortly with more details about all of the above. Additional Updates In addition to the above enhancements, today’s release also includes a number of additional improvements: AutoScale: Richer time and date based scheduling support (set different rules on different dates) AutoScale: Ability to Scale to Zero Virtual Machines (very useful for Dev/Test scenarios) AutoScale: Support for time-based scheduling of Mobile Service AutoScale rules Operation Logs: Auditing support for Service Bus management operations Today we also shipped a major update to the Windows Azure SDK – Windows Azure SDK 2.2. It has so much goodness in it that I have a whole second blog post coming shortly on it! :-) Summary Today’s Windows Azure release enables a bunch of great new scenarios, and enables a much richer enterprise authentication offering. If you don’t already have a Windows Azure account, you can sign-up for a free trial and start using all of the above features today. Then visit the Windows Azure Developer Center to learn more about how to build apps with it. Hope this helps, Scott P.S. In addition to blogging, I am also now using Twitter for quick updates and to share links. Follow me at: twitter.com/scottgu

    Toorcon 2012 Information Security Conference San Diego, CA, http://www.toorcon.org/ Dan Anderson, October 2012 It's almost Halloween, and we all know what that means—yes, of course, it's time for another Toorcon Conference! Toorcon is an annual conference for people interested in computer security. This includes the whole range of hackers, computer hobbyists, professionals, security consultants, press, law enforcement, prosecutors, FBI, etc. We're at Toorcon 14—see earlier blogs for some of the previous Toorcon's I've attended (back to 2003). This year's "con" was held at the Westin on Broadway in downtown San Diego, California. The following are not necessarily my views—I'm just the messenger—although I could have misquoted or misparaphrased the speakers. Also, I only reviewed some of the talks, below, which I attended and interested me. MalAndroid—the Crux of Android Infections, Aditya K. Sood Programming Weird Machines with ELF Metadata, Rebecca "bx" Shapiro Privacy at the Handset: New FCC Rules?, Valkyrie Hacking Measured Boot and UEFI, Dan Griffin You Can't Buy Security: Building the Open Source InfoSec Program, Boris Sverdlik What Journalists Want: The Investigative Reporters' Perspective on Hacking, Dave Maas & Jason Leopold Accessibility and Security, Anna Shubina Stop Patching, for Stronger PCI Compliance, Adam Brand McAfee Secure & Trustmarks — a Hacker's Best Friend, Jay James & Shane MacDougall MalAndroid—the Crux of Android Infections Aditya K. Sood, IOActive, Michigan State PhD candidate Aditya talked about Android smartphone malware. There's a lot of old Android software out there—over 50% Gingerbread (2.3.x)—and most have unpatched vulnerabilities. Of 9 Android vulnerabilities, 8 have known exploits (such as the old Gingerbread Global Object Table exploit). Android protection includes sandboxing, security scanner, app permissions, and screened Android app market. The Android permission checker has fine-grain resource control, policy enforcement. Android static analysis also includes a static analysis app checker (bouncer), and a vulnerablity checker. What security problems does Android have? User-centric security, which depends on the user to grant permission and make smart decisions. But users don't care or think about malware (the're not aware, not paranoid). All they want is functionality, extensibility, mobility Android had no "proper" encryption before Android 3.0 No built-in protection against social engineering and web tricks Alternative Android app markets are unsafe. Simply visiting some markets can infect Android Aditya classified Android Malware types as: Type A—Apps. These interact with the Android app framework. For example, a fake Netflix app. Or Android Gold Dream (game), which uploads user files stealthy manner to a remote location. Type K—Kernel. Exploits underlying Linux libraries or kernel Type H—Hybrid. These use multiple layers (app framework, libraries, kernel). These are most commonly used by Android botnets, which are popular with Chinese botnet authors What are the threats from Android malware? These incude leak info (contacts), banking fraud, corporate network attacks, malware advertising, malware "Hackivism" (the promotion of social causes. For example, promiting specific leaders of the Tunisian or Iranian revolutions. Android malware is frequently "masquerated". That is, repackaged inside a legit app with malware. To avoid detection, the hidden malware is not unwrapped until runtime. The malware payload can be hidden in, for example, PNG files. Less common are Android bootkits—there's not many around. What they do is hijack the Android init framework—alteering system programs and daemons, then deletes itself. For example, the DKF Bootkit (China). Android App Problems: no code signing! all self-signed native code execution permission sandbox — all or none alternate market places no robust Android malware detection at network level delayed patch process Programming Weird Machines with ELF Metadata Rebecca "bx" Shapiro, Dartmouth College, NH https://github.com/bx/elf-bf-tools @bxsays on twitter Definitions. "ELF" is an executable file format used in linking and loading executables (on UNIX/Linux-class machines). "Weird machine" uses undocumented computation sources (I think of them as unintended virtual machines). Some examples of "weird machines" are those that: return to weird location, does SQL injection, corrupts the heap. Bx then talked about using ELF metadata as (an uintended) "weird machine". Some ELF background: A compiler takes source code and generates a ELF object file (hello.o). A static linker makes an ELF executable from the object file. A runtime linker and loader takes ELF executable and loads and relocates it in memory. The ELF file has symbols to relocate functions and variables. ELF has two relocation tables—one at link time and another one at loading time: .rela.dyn (link time) and .dynsym (dynamic table). GOT: Global Offset Table of addresses for dynamically-linked functions. PLT: Procedure Linkage Tables—works with GOT. The memory layout of a process (not the ELF file) is, in order: program (+ heap), dynamic libraries, libc, ld.so, stack (which includes the dynamic table loaded into memory) For ELF, the "weird machine" is found and exploited in the loader. ELF can be crafted for executing viruses, by tricking runtime into executing interpreted "code" in the ELF symbol table. One can inject parasitic "code" without modifying the actual ELF code portions. Think of the ELF symbol table as an "assembly language" interpreter. It has these elements: instructions: Add, move, jump if not 0 (jnz) Think of symbol table entries as "registers" symbol table value is "contents" immediate values are constants direct values are addresses (e.g., 0xdeadbeef) move instruction: is a relocation table entry add instruction: relocation table "addend" entry jnz instruction: takes multiple relocation table entries The ELF weird machine exploits the loader by relocating relocation table entries. The loader will go on forever until told to stop. It stores state on stack at "end" and uses IFUNC table entries (containing function pointer address). The ELF weird machine, called "Brainfu*k" (BF) has: 8 instructions: pointer inc, dec, inc indirect, dec indirect, jump forward, jump backward, print. Three registers - 3 registers Bx showed example BF source code that implemented a Turing machine printing "hello, world". More interesting was the next demo, where bx modified ping. Ping runs suid as root, but quickly drops privilege. BF modified the loader to disable the library function call dropping privilege, so it remained as root. Then BF modified the ping -t argument to execute the -t filename as root. It's best to show what this modified ping does with an example: $ whoami bx $ ping localhost -t backdoor.sh # executes backdoor $ whoami root $ The modified code increased from 285948 bytes to 290209 bytes. A BF tool compiles "executable" by modifying the symbol table in an existing ELF executable. The tool modifies .dynsym and .rela.dyn table, but not code or data. Privacy at the Handset: New FCC Rules? "Valkyrie" (Christie Dudley, Santa Clara Law JD candidate) Valkyrie talked about mobile handset privacy. Some background: Senator Franken (also a comedian) became alarmed about CarrierIQ, where the carriers track their customers. Franken asked the FCC to find out what obligations carriers think they have to protect privacy. The carriers' response was that they are doing just fine with self-regulation—no worries! Carriers need to collect data, such as missed calls, to maintain network quality. But carriers also sell data for marketing. Verizon sells customer data and enables this with a narrow privacy policy (only 1 month to opt out, with difficulties). The data sold is not individually identifiable and is aggregated. But Verizon recommends, as an aggregation workaround to "recollate" data to other databases to identify customers indirectly. The FCC has regulated telephone privacy since 1934 and mobile network privacy since 2007. Also, the carriers say mobile phone privacy is a FTC responsibility (not FCC). FTC is trying to improve mobile app privacy, but FTC has no authority over carrier / customer relationships. As a side note, Apple iPhones are unique as carriers have extra control over iPhones they don't have with other smartphones. As a result iPhones may be more regulated. Who are the consumer advocates? Everyone knows EFF, but EPIC (Electrnic Privacy Info Center), although more obsecure, is more relevant. What to do? Carriers must be accountable. Opt-in and opt-out at any time. Carriers need incentive to grant users control for those who want it, by holding them liable and responsible for breeches on their clock. Location information should be added current CPNI privacy protection, and require "Pen/trap" judicial order to obtain (and would still be a lower standard than 4th Amendment). Politics are on a pro-privacy swing now, with many senators and the Whitehouse. There will probably be new regulation soon, and enforcement will be a problem, but consumers will still have some benefit. Hacking Measured Boot and UEFI Dan Griffin, JWSecure, Inc., Seattle, @JWSdan Dan talked about hacking measured UEFI boot. First some terms: UEFI is a boot technology that is replacing BIOS (has whitelisting and blacklisting). UEFI protects devices against rootkits. TPM - hardware security device to store hashs and hardware-protected keys "secure boot" can control at firmware level what boot images can boot "measured boot" OS feature that tracks hashes (from BIOS, boot loader, krnel, early drivers). "remote attestation" allows remote validation and control based on policy on a remote attestation server. Microsoft pushing TPM (Windows 8 required), but Google is not. Intel TianoCore is the only open source for UEFI. Dan has Measured Boot Tool at http://mbt.codeplex.com/ with a demo where you can also view TPM data. TPM support already on enterprise-class machines. UEFI Weaknesses. UEFI toolkits are evolving rapidly, but UEFI has weaknesses: assume user is an ally trust TPM implicitly, and attached to computer hibernate file is unprotected (disk encryption protects against this) protection migrating from hardware to firmware delays in patching and whitelist updates will UEFI really be adopted by the mainstream (smartphone hardware support, bank support, apathetic consumer support) You Can't Buy Security: Building the Open Source InfoSec Program Boris Sverdlik, ISDPodcast.com co-host Boris talked about problems typical with current security audits. "IT Security" is an oxymoron—IT exists to enable buiness, uptime, utilization, reporting, but don't care about security—IT has conflict of interest. There's no Magic Bullet ("blinky box"), no one-size-fits-all solution (e.g., Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs)). Regulations don't make you secure. The cloud is not secure (because of shared data and admin access). Defense and pen testing is not sexy. Auditors are not solution (security not a checklist)—what's needed is experience and adaptability—need soft skills. Step 1: First thing is to Google and learn the company end-to-end before you start. Get to know the management team (not IT team), meet as many people as you can. Don't use arbitrary values such as CISSP scores. Quantitive risk assessment is a myth (e.g. AV*EF-SLE). Learn different Business Units, legal/regulatory obligations, learn the business and where the money is made, verify company is protected from script kiddies (easy), learn sensitive information (IP, internal use only), and start with low-hanging fruit (customer service reps and social engineering). Step 2: Policies. Keep policies short and relevant. Generic SANS "security" boilerplate policies don't make sense and are not followed. Focus on acceptable use, data usage, communications, physical security. Step 3: Implementation: keep it simple stupid. Open source, although useful, is not free (implementation cost). Access controls with authentication & authorization for local and remote access. MS Windows has it, otherwise use OpenLDAP, OpenIAM, etc. Application security Everyone tries to reinvent the wheel—use existing static analysis tools. Review high-risk apps and major revisions. Don't run different risk level apps on same system. Assume host/client compromised and use app-level security control. Network security VLAN != segregated because there's too many workarounds. Use explicit firwall rules, active and passive network monitoring (snort is free), disallow end user access to production environment, have a proxy instead of direct Internet access. Also, SSL certificates are not good two-factor auth and SSL does not mean "safe." Operational Controls Have change, patch, asset, & vulnerability management (OSSI is free). For change management, always review code before pushing to production For logging, have centralized security logging for business-critical systems, separate security logging from administrative/IT logging, and lock down log (as it has everything). Monitor with OSSIM (open source). Use intrusion detection, but not just to fulfill a checkbox: build rules from a whitelist perspective (snort). OSSEC has 95% of what you need. Vulnerability management is a QA function when done right: OpenVas and Seccubus are free. Security awareness The reality is users will always click everything. Build real awareness, not compliance driven checkbox, and have it integrated into the culture. Pen test by crowd sourcing—test with logging COSSP http://www.cossp.org/ - Comprehensive Open Source Security Project What Journalists Want: The Investigative Reporters' Perspective on Hacking Dave Maas, San Diego CityBeat Jason Leopold, Truthout.org The difference between hackers and investigative journalists: For hackers, the motivation varies, but method is same, technological specialties. For investigative journalists, it's about one thing—The Story, and they need broad info-gathering skills. J-School in 60 Seconds: Generic formula: Person or issue of pubic interest, new info, or angle. Generic criteria: proximity, prominence, timeliness, human interest, oddity, or consequence. Media awareness of hackers and trends: journalists becoming extremely aware of hackers with congressional debates (privacy, data breaches), demand for data-mining Journalists, use of coding and web development for Journalists, and Journalists busted for hacking (Murdock). Info gathering by investigative journalists include Public records laws. Federal Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is good, but slow. California Public Records Act is a lot stronger. FOIA takes forever because of foot-dragging—it helps to be specific. Often need to sue (especially FBI). CPRA is faster, and requests can be vague. Dumps and leaks (a la Wikileaks) Journalists want: leads, protecting ourselves, our sources, and adapting tools for news gathering (Google hacking). Anonomity is important to whistleblowers. They want no digital footprint left behind (e.g., email, web log). They don't trust encryption, want to feel safe and secure. Whistleblower laws are very weak—there's no upside for whistleblowers—they have to be very passionate to do it. Accessibility and Security or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Halting Problem Anna Shubina, Dartmouth College Anna talked about how accessibility and security are related. Accessibility of digital content (not real world accessibility). mostly refers to blind users and screenreaders, for our purpose. Accessibility is about parsing documents, as are many security issues. "Rich" executable content causes accessibility to fail, and often causes security to fail. For example MS Word has executable format—it's not a document exchange format—more dangerous than PDF or HTML. Accessibility is often the first and maybe only sanity check with parsing. They have no choice because someone may want to read what you write. Google, for example, is very particular about web browser you use and are bad at supporting other browsers. Uses JavaScript instead of links, often requiring mouseover to display content. PDF is a security nightmare. Executible format, embedded flash, JavaScript, etc. 15 million lines of code. Google Chrome doesn't handle PDF correctly, causing several security bugs. PDF has an accessibility checker and PDF tagging, to help with accessibility. But no PDF checker checks for incorrect tags, untagged content, or validates lists or tables. None check executable content at all. The "Halting Problem" is: can one decide whether a program will ever stop? The answer, in general, is no (Rice's theorem). The same holds true for accessibility checkers. Language-theoretic Security says complicated data formats are hard to parse and cannot be solved due to the Halting Problem. W3C Web Accessibility Guidelines: "Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, Robust" Not much help though, except for "Robust", but here's some gems: * all information should be parsable (paraphrasing) * if not parsable, cannot be converted to alternate formats * maximize compatibility in new document formats Executible webpages are bad for security and accessibility. They say it's for a better web experience. But is it necessary to stuff web pages with JavaScript for a better experience? A good example is The Drudge Report—it has hand-written HTML with no JavaScript, yet drives a lot of web traffic due to good content. A bad example is Google News—hidden scrollbars, guessing user input. Solutions: Accessibility and security problems come from same source Expose "better user experience" myth Keep your corner of Internet parsable Remember "Halting Problem"—recognize false solutions (checking and verifying tools) Stop Patching, for Stronger PCI Compliance Adam Brand, protiviti @adamrbrand, http://www.picfun.com/ Adam talked about PCI compliance for retail sales. Take an example: for PCI compliance, 50% of Brian's time (a IT guy), 960 hours/year was spent patching POSs in 850 restaurants. Often applying some patches make no sense (like fixing a browser vulnerability on a server). "Scanner worship" is overuse of vulnerability scanners—it gives a warm and fuzzy and it's simple (red or green results—fix reds). Scanners give a false sense of security. In reality, breeches from missing patches are uncommon—more common problems are: default passwords, cleartext authentication, misconfiguration (firewall ports open). Patching Myths: Myth 1: install within 30 days of patch release (but PCI §6.1 allows a "risk-based approach" instead). Myth 2: vendor decides what's critical (also PCI §6.1). But §6.2 requires user ranking of vulnerabilities instead. Myth 3: scan and rescan until it passes. But PCI §11.2.1b says this applies only to high-risk vulnerabilities. Adam says good recommendations come from NIST 800-40. Instead use sane patching and focus on what's really important. From NIST 800-40: Proactive: Use a proactive vulnerability management process: use change control, configuration management, monitor file integrity. Monitor: start with NVD and other vulnerability alerts, not scanner results. Evaluate: public-facing system? workstation? internal server? (risk rank) Decide:on action and timeline Test: pre-test patches (stability, functionality, rollback) for change control Install: notify, change control, tickets McAfee Secure & Trustmarks — a Hacker's Best Friend Jay James, Shane MacDougall, Tactical Intelligence Inc., Canada "McAfee Secure Trustmark" is a website seal marketed by McAfee. A website gets this badge if they pass their remote scanning. The problem is a removal of trustmarks act as flags that you're vulnerable. Easy to view status change by viewing McAfee list on website or on Google. "Secure TrustGuard" is similar to McAfee. Jay and Shane wrote Perl scripts to gather sites from McAfee and search engines. If their certification image changes to a 1x1 pixel image, then they are longer certified. Their scripts take deltas of scans to see what changed daily. The bottom line is change in TrustGuard status is a flag for hackers to attack your site. Entire idea of seals is silly—you're raising a flag saying if you're vulnerable.

  • Apache2 mod_proxy to remote Tomcat7 - slow response

    - by 12N
    Been stuck with this one for a few days. Will try to provide as much information as possible, but please feel free to ask for extra detail. I have 2 VMs behind a NAT, 192.168.0.100 and 192.168.0.102, both running Ubuntu 11.04 x64. The first one is mapped to the exterior and is our webserver, has one Apache/2.2.17 install with several vhosts to serve static content, and there's also mod_jk for load balancing. The second one has a tomcat 7 install with several J2EE REST webservices but no apache - requests are expected to be passed directly from .100 apache to .102 tomcat. It is my intention to prepare a tomcat clustered environment. My problem: Requests reach to 192.168.0.100 with no trouble whatsoever, but then take about... 100 seconds for data to actually arrive to .102 - by that time apache has already timeouted, but tomcat receives and processes the request pretty normally. This happens both when using mod_jk, mod_proxy, or mod_ajp_proxy. No idea why, since there are no firewalls in either of the machines, both are pingable - more than that, there are NFS shares active working like a charm - and a mod_proxy experience shown that requests originating directly from .100 are processed normally. Also, to add insult to injury, a similar environment is set up at our office network. Everything works perfectly. -_- The only difference? We have no ip translation at the office and do everything by internal addresses - dunno if that's relevant in any way. Some configs: Apache vhost: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost DocumentRoot /var/www/ ServerName www.example.com ProxyRequests Off <Proxy *> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride all Order allow,deny allow from all </Proxy> ProxyPass /bork http://192.168.0.102:8080/bork ProxyPassReverse /bork http://192.168.0.102:8080/bork LogLevel debug CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/api_access.log combined ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/api_error.log </VirtualHost> Tomcat connectors <Connector port="8080" protocol="HTTP/1.1" connectionTimeout="20000" redirectPort="8443" /> <Connector port="8009" enableLookups="false" redirectPort="8443" protocol="AJP/1.3" /> And a debug log from apache, from a test using mod_proxy_ajp. The behavior is pretty much the same in mod_proxy, at least regarding the delay. Please note that tomcat eventually receives and processes the request, more or less when the log starts being updated again: [Sun May 06 14:40:33 2012] [debug] proxy_util.c(1506): [client • QLogic QLE8152 won't link up with a fiber loop

    - by Mike Pennington
    I have a Dell R710 running Debian Linux 6.0 (Squeeze). I installed a QLogic QLE8152 CNA in the PCI-E riser today and I have been trying to get the CNA's ethernet layer to come up after I put a fiber loop on it; I also scoped it with a light meter, and the SFP+ transceiver is getting the correct amount of light. The whole time I have been working on this problem, the lights on the CNA are blinking green at a rate of about 1 flash every 3 seconds. When I plug the fiber into a Juniper EX4500 10GE in a rack next to it, the Juniper's link stays down as well. I have to confess that this is my first wrangling with a CNA, so perhaps I'm doing something fundamentally wrong, but here is what I have found so far... First the basics... • Network Logon Issues with Group Policy and Network

    - by bobloki
    I am gravely in need of your help and assistance. We have a problem with our logon and startup to our Windows 7 Enterprise system. We have more than 3000 Windows Desktops situated in roughly 20+ buildings around campus. Almost every computer on campus has the problem that I will be describing. I have spent over one month peering over etl files from Windows Performance Analyzer (A great product) and hundreds of thousands of event logs. I come to you today humbled that I could not figure this out. The problem as simply put our logon times are extremely long. An average first time logon is roughly 2-10 minutes depending on the software installed. All computers are Windows 7, the oldest computers being 5 years old. Startup times on various computers range from good (1-2 minutes) to very bad (5-60). Our second time logons range from 30 seconds to 4 minutes. We have a gigabit connection between each computer on the network. We have 5 domain controllers which also double as our DNS servers. Initial testing led us to believe that this was a software problem. So I spent a few days testing machines only to find inconsistent results from the etl files from xperfview. Each subset of computers on campus had a different subset of software issues, none seeming to interfere with logon just startup. So I started looking at our group policy and located some very interesting event ID’s. Group Policy 1129: The processing of Group Policy failed because of lack of network connectivity to a domain controller. Group Policy 1055: The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows could not resolve the computer name. This could be caused by one of more of the following: a) Name Resolution failure on the current domain controller. b) Active Directory Replication Latency (an account created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current domain controller). NETLOGON 5719 : This computer was not able to set up a secure session with a domain controller in domain OURDOMAIN due to the following: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request. This may lead to authentication problems. Make sure that this computer is connected to the network. If the problem persists, please contact your domain administrator. E1kexpress 27: Intel®82567LM-3 Gigabit Network Connection – Network link is disconnected. NetBT 4300 – The driver could not be created. WMI 10 - Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected. More or less with timestamps it becomes apparent that the network maybe the issue. 1:25:57 - Group Policy is trying to discover the domain controller information 1:25:57 - The network link has been disconnected 1:25:58 - The processing of Group Policy failed because of lack of network connectivity to a domain controller. This may be a transient condition. A success message would be generated once the machine gets connected to the domain controller and Group Policy has successfully processed. If you do not see a success message for several hours, then contact your administrator. 1:25:58 - Making LDAP calls to connect and bind to active directory.
