• Unable to access Windows 7 shared folder with Windows 98

  I'm unable to access a Windows 7 (Windows 7 Pro 64-bit) shared folder from an old Windows 98 box: I tried with: Turning on file and printer sharing Turning on public folder sharing Turning off password protected sharing Sharing the folder with read permissions to Everyone Lowering the encryption to 40-56 bits. The shared folder works fine using it from Windows XP, and even from Linux with CIFS / Samba, but when I try to use it from Win98 with: NET USE X: \\SERVER\SHARE an user / password dialog pops up. I entered the administrator's user / password from my Windows 7 box, but it doesn't work (incorrect password). The same Win98 machine works fine accessing a Windows XP shared folder, so it looks like a Windows 7 networking issue. Any ideas?

• What are the best practices for phasing out obsolete code?

  I have the need to phase out an obsolete method. I am aware of the [Obsolete] attribute. Does Microsoft have a recommended best practice guide for doing this? Here's my current plan: A. I do not want to create a new assembly because developers would have to add a new reference to their projects and I expect to get a lot of grief from my boss and co-workers if they must do this. We also do not maintain multiple assembly versions. We only use the latest version. Changing this practice would require changing our deployment process which is a big issue (have to teach people how to do things with TFS instead of FinalBuilder and get them to give up FinalBuilder) B. Mark the old method obsolete. C. Because the implementation is changing (not the method signature), I need to rename the method rather than create an overload. So, to make users aware of the proper method I plan to add a message to the [Obsolete] attribute. This part bothers me, because the only change I'm making is decoupling the method from the connection string. But, because I'm not adding a new assembly, I see no way around this.   szenario: (outside)---(ASA5510)---(inside) -Windows2008 DC .....................(dmz) ..........-Win2008 FTP Server Which Ports do I need to open from DMZ-Inside that FTP Users can authentificated on the Inside DC? I have allready opend 389 (Ldap), 636 (secure Ldap) and 53 (dns). But the ftp Client stucks allways after processing the credentials and the FTP Server gives you an eventlog "logon error". the error messages indicates that there could be an issue with closed ports. if I turn the ACL to "IP", that means all ports are open, everything is working fine.

• Another installation is in progress

  Why I try to install any program I see "Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before continuing this one." error. Googled the web and found that solution would be to delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress registry key and reboot. That didn't help me unfortunately. When I open "Services" mmc snapin it shows that "Windows Installer" service is "Started", but "Start/Stop/Pause/Restart" buttons are grayed (the interesting thing is that startup type = "Manual", so I don't really know how to explain that I already have 2 instances of msiexec.exe in memory and one instance is consuming 50Mb of memory. Looks like there's a serious issue with my installer service - is there any way to fix it (please do mind - I can't install anything!) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Resize Ubuntu Linux system to smaller disk inside VMware ESXi

  I have several Ubuntu Linux virtual machines running on VMware ESXi hosts that have all been allocated disks much larger than their required capacity. As space is now becoming an issue on our SAN, I'd like to investigate downsizing the allocated disk space on these machines. All systems will be completely backed up imaged before I begin making changes, and I will always retain a pristine backup in case the partition resizing does not work. Is there an easier way than the following procedure, or is their a better solution entirely? Shutdown and assign a second disk to the virtual machine Boot using the SystemRescueCD Use GParted to resize the original (source) partition, making it smaller Clone the new, smaller partition to the second disk Shutdown and remove initial disk from the virtual machine Reboot and force fsck to check the filesystem

• MVVM - child windows and data contexts

  Should a child window have it's own data context (View-Model) or use the data context of the parent? More broadly, should each View have its own View-Model? Are there are any rules to guide making that decision? What if the various View-Models will be accessing the same Model? I haven't been able to find any consistent guidance on my question. The MS definition of MVVM appears to be silent on child windows. For one example, I have created a warning message notification View. It really didn't need a data context since it was passed the message to display. But if I needed to fancy it up a bit, I would have tapped the parent's data context. I have run into another scenario that needs a child window and is more complicated than the notification box. The parent's View-Model is already getting cluttered, so I had planned on generating a dedicated VM for the child window. But I can't find any guidance on whether this is a good idea or what the potential consequences may be. FWIW, I happen to be working in Silverlight, but I don't know that this question is strictly a Silverlight issue.

• Effective way to check if an Entity/Player enters a region/trigger

  I was wondering how multiplayer games detect if you enter a special region. Let's assume there is a huge map that is so big that simply checking it would become a huge performance issue. I've seen bukkit (a modding API for Minecraft servers) firing an Event on every single move. I don't think that larger games do the same because even if you have only a few coordinates you are interested in, you have to loop through a few trigger zone to see if the player is inside your region - for every player. This seems like an extremely CPU-intense operation to me even though I've never developed something like that. Is there a special algorithm that is used by larger games to accomplish this? The only thing I could imagine is to split up the world into multiple parts and to register the event not on the movement itself but on all the parts that are covered by your area and only check for areas that are registered in the current part. And another thing I would like to know: How could you detect when someone must have entered a trigger but you never saw him directly in it since his client only sent you an move packet shortly before entering and after leaving the trigger area. Drawing a line and calculate all colliding parts seems rather CPU intensive if you have to perform it every time.

• cygwin GNU make .net program piping inconsistent behavior

  This question may sound like a superuser question but I feel there is something related to programming. Anyway, my computer had a fresh installation of Win 7 64 and cygwin recently. Now I observed some problem with pipe handling in gnu make file. The following is the Makefile I use to reproduce the issue: all: fsutil | cat my-dotnet-console.exe | cat The problem is: for the first command line, the piping works every time but for the second command line, the piping barely works - I got no result for the second command for most cases, regardless of the environment (cmd or bash) in which the make file is invoked. However, if I copy paste the second command line into cmd (or bash), the pipe works every time. The following is my .net program: static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine(new string('a', 40)); Console.Out.Flush(); } The make version is 3.82.90 but the same problem was observed in a previous version (because of the windows path handling problem in 3.82.9, I replaced make.exe with a previous version). I don't know the exact cygwin version I have installed but the current version on cygwin.com is 1.7.11-1. Currently, my work around is to redirect the output to a temporary file but it would be great if I can avoid the temporary file. Thanks

• Can you set CIFS permisions from EMC Command Line?

  I am in the process of migrating file shares from my EMC NS-20 to my new VNXe 3100. I am using a RoboCopy script to move the files but am getting errors on some files and folders. I have Domain Admin privileges but when I go to view the security permissions on the folders it says I don't have permissions. I have tried taking ownership to get around the permissions issue but that fails too. So as a last resort can I set permissions on this folder from the EMC console or Web management console?

  I Googled and Googled and I just cannot find a solution to this problem: sudo apt-get install <whatever> Gives me: WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated! and Install these packages without verification [y/N]? I cannot find a decent solution. The closest I got was to run: sudo apt-get install debian-keyring debian-archive-keyring But then, even thought, and against my good judgment I agreed to install the package without confirmation, I get: (I replaced http with XXXX because of forum limitations). • Cannot use apt-get/dpkg -- Input/output error

  I have bumped into an issue that doesn't allow me to do anything related to apt-get: install, remove, etc. Whenever I try to do something (e.g. sudo apt-get install firefox -f) it gives me the same error message: Reading database ... dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting: unable to open files list file for package `fontconfig-config': Input/output error E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2) I have tried to deal with the package `fontconfig-config' without success. I have found that the "Input/output error" is usually linked with physical problems of the hd, but I do not think that's the case I am using that hd without any other problem. I have tried removing the mention to the package in /var/lib/dpkg/status as mentioned here. I have tried deleting all files related to the package in /var/lib/dpkg/info as I found somewhere. But I still cannot do anything. The funny bit comes when I look for the file that is giving me troubles: mecho@Ansible-MS-7680:/var/lib/dpkg/info$ ls fontconfig* ls: cannot access fontconfig-config.list: Input/output error fontconfig.list fontconfig.postinst fontconfig.preinst fontconfig.triggers fontconfig.md5sums fontconfig.postrm fontconfig.prerm This is done after I deleted all files ... it looks like fontconfig-config.list still exists but it doesn't show up! • MacBook Pro - 72k vs 54k rpm drives - Heat and Noise

  I am looking at a new 15" MacBook Pro for development purposes. I am planning to run a Virtual Machine for about 50% of my work (Windows 7 x64, IIS, SQL Server, and VS 2010). The upgrade from a 54000 rpm drive to a 72000 rpm is only $45. From what I understand the faster rotational speed of the 72000 rpm drive will help virtual machine performance. However, I am concerned that additional heat and fan noise might be an issue. I will be running mostly on A/C power so decreased battery life is not a major concern for me. Since I would be running with a Core i7 processor which gives off a fair amount of heat already I was wondering if it might be best to stay at 54000 rpm for the hard drive. What do you all think? • Aptana Ext code completion in .php files

  I'm having problems getting the code-completion for the Ext 3.2 plugin to work, when working with .php files. I've also installed the php plugin for Aptana, and the same thing applies for php - I cannot access php code-completion when working with a html-file, so it seems like a general issue... It's also not possible to write Ext in .js files, which is weird... The latter case does make sense of course. But I should be able to write both php and Ext in .php files! Is this possible in any way? I have of course tested the code-completion for php in a .php file, which works. The same applies for Ext code in .html documents!

  A while ago, sparkfun.com changed their URL structure from /commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9266 to /products/9266 This is nice, right? We don't need to know that it is (or was) a PHP page, and commerce, product_info, and products_id all tell us that we're looking at some products. The latter form seems like a great improvement. However, the change would have broken existing links. So, nicely, they stuck in 302 redirects. Visit http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9266 and your browser will issue GET /commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9266 HTTP/1.1 to which Sparkfun's servers reply HTTP/1.1 302 Found Location: http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9266 This 302 redirect is caught by Stack Exchange's link validator as a broken link. It's not broken it works just fine. Here, try it: http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9266 I understand that a 302 redirect is intended to be a temporary redirect, while a 301 should be used for permanent changes per RFC 2616. That said, Wikipedia and common practice use it as a redirect. Who is in error in this situation? Is this an error in Sparkfun's redirect implementation or in Stack Exchange's URL validator?

• Internet very slow when upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10

  I was running Ubuntu 8.x on my desktop and everything worked fine. Im using wired internet and it worked perfectly, pages loaded pretty fast. However, when I decided to upgrade to 9.10 the upgrade failed at some point, however I was left with what appeared to be Ubuntu 9.10. Since then the internet has been weird. When I go to a website it takes at least 10 seconds for the page to display, however if Im on a site and navigate to other pages on the website it loads quickly. This never happened prior to the upgrade. I thought this may be due to the upgrade not installing correctly so I did a fresh install of Xubuntu 9.10 but the problems are still the same. Im writing this on a Vista machine over the wireless network and internet is fine. Does anyone have any ideas of the issue? Thanks.

• ESXi 5.1 on Poweredge 510 freezes after base-esx update

  Background / Problem Just experienced an issue where an ESXi host was upgraded from 5.0 -- 5.1 perfectly fine. Then, I did a scan and remediated a patch (ESXi510-201210401-BG) Looking into the host on via the kvm switch, this appears to complete successfully. However, on reboot, the server hangs at the "Initializing Power Management" phase. • Are very short or abbreviated method/function names that don't use full words bad practice or a matter of style.

  Is there nowadays any case for brevity over clarity with method names? Tonight I came across the Python method repr() which seems like a bad name for a method to me. It's not an English word. It apparently is an abbreviation of 'representation' and even if you can deduce that, it still doesn't tell you what the method does. A good method name is subjective to a certain degree, but I had assumed that modern best practices agreed that names should be at least full words and descriptive enough to reveal enough about the method that you would easily find one when looking for it. Method names made from words help let your code read like English. repr() seems to have no advantages as a name other than being short and IDE auto-complete makes this a non-issue. An additional reason given in an answer is that python names are brief so that you can do many things on one line. Surely the better way is to just extract the many things to their own function, and repeat until lines are not too long. Are these just a hangover from the unix way of doing things? Commands with names like ls, rm, ps and du (if you could call those names) were hard to find and hard to remember. I know that the everyday usage of commands such as these is different than methods in code so the matter of whether those are bad names is a different matter.

• Building a Redundant / Distrubuted Application

  This is more of a "point me in the right direction" question. I (and my team of 3) have built a hosted web app that queues and routes customer chat requests to available customer service agents (It does other things as well, but this is enough background to illustrate the issue). The basic dev architecture today is: a single page ajax web UI (ASP.NET MVC) with floating chat windows (think Gmail) a backend Windows service to queue and route the chat requests this service also logs the chats, calculates service levels, etc a Comet server product that routes data between the web frontend and the backend Windows service this also helps us detect which Agents are still connected (online) And our hardware architecture today is: 2 servers to host the web UI portion of the application a load balancer to route requests to the 2 different web app servers a third server to host the SQL Server DB and the backend Windows service responsible for queuing / delivering chats So as it stands today, one of the web app servers could go down and we would be ok. However, if something would happen to the SQL Server / Windows Service server we would be boned. My question - how can I make this backend Windows service logic be able to be spread across multiple machines (distributed)? The Windows service is written to accept requests from the Comet server, check for available Agents, and route the chat to those agents. How can I make this more distributed? How can I make it so that I can distribute the work of the backend Windows service can be spread across multiple machines for redundancy and uptime purposes? Will I need to re-write it with distributed computing in mind? I should also note that I am hosting all of this on Rackspace Cloud instances - so maybe it is something I should be less concerned about? Thanks in advance for any help!

  One of my neighbors has an unsecure wifi network called WLAN. At one point in the past, I accidentally connected to it, and disconnected immediately when I noticed. Now, when I open my laptop at home, it sometimes connects to the WLAN network first, before trying my (secured) home wifi network. The information I've found regarding this issue seems to suggest this network should have a profile on the "Manage wireless networks" screen - but it does not. How do I tell Windows 7 to never connect to networks with SSIDs called WLAN? Or to never connect to unsecured networks without confirming with me first?

  Using a square 17" lcd monitor, and setting the Monitor to display text in larger font than default, some of the pages in QB have the bottom 2 or 3 lines chopped off. QB support has no ideas for a different/larger monitor that would solve the problem for those of us with 50 something eyes. Seems like everyone is going to the widescreen format, but when we tried one on the QB stuff, it spreads out the page to the point that it is deformed...too wide. Does anybody make a new square screen monitor in 19, 20, or bigger that would solve this issue. we can't be the only ones experiencing this.

• Reduce Windows DNS Service caching on Window

  I'm struggling with DNS caching issues on a Windows based LAN. I've noticed that if I change a DNS record on a domain hosted by a 3rd party nameserver, that I always seem to be the very last person to see the change happen. I can often query the domain using a service which checks propagation around the world like www.whatsmydns.net but I usually find that all other DNS servers are correct and it's only my own server which has the old IP - even 8-12 hours later. This is an issue for us as we're website developers and often making changes to DNS records so these huge delays are frustrating. It seems to be because our primary domain controller server (+Active Directory & DNS) on our LAN (which is also our local DNS server) caches records for AGES (Way beyond it's published TTL). How can I stop the Windows DNS server from caching, or reduce the caching to only an hour or so?
