  • JSON htmlentities javascript

    - by Wessel Rossing
    Hi! I am using an XMLHttpRequest to POST a JSON string to PHP. The JSON object is created in JavaScript and using the JSON2.js from json.org to create an JSON string representing the object. JSON.stringify(object); Whenever the object contains a string which has a special character in it, e.g. é, JavaScript does not give any error but PHP receives an empty array [] Is there a JavaScript function which produces the exact same resutls as the PHP function htmlentities() The data is send via POST, so the following functions escape() encodeURI() encodeURIComponent() are a bit overkill. Thanks!

  • How to group a complex list of objects using LINQ?

    - by Daoming Yang
    I want to select and group the products, and rank them by the number of times they occur. For example, I have an OrderList each of order object has a OrderProductVariantList(OrderLineList), and each of OrderProductVariant object has ProductVariant, and then the ProductVariant object will have a Product object which contains product information. A friend helped me with the following code. It could be compiled, but it did not return any value/result. I used the watch window for the query and it gave me "The name 'query' does not exist in the current context". Can anyone help me? Many thanks. var query = orderList.SelectMany( o => o.OrderLineList ) // results in IEnumerable<OrderProductVariant> .Select( opv => opv.ProductVariant ) .Select( pv => p.Product ) .GroupBy( p => p ) .Select( g => new { Product = g.Key, Count = g.Count() });

  • Disable a textbox using CSS

    - by Balaji
    How to disable a textbox in CSS? Currently we are having a textbox in our view which can be enabled/disabled depending on a property in the model. We are having asp.net MVC view; depending on the value of the Model property we need to either render a textbox or readonly textbox. we were thinking of doing this by applying CSS to the view control. Has someone done this earlier?

  • Error when changing default lanuage in asp.net compilation from vb to c#

    - by Herman
    Hi all, We have a updatable web site project that is written in c#, it has the usual web form implementation using master page, skins, user controls,...etc. Up to this point we neglect to change the default compilation language from VB to C#. However, the second we change it, we see the following error. Object reference not set to an instance of an object. ---> System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at ASP.Default.__DataBinding__control499(Object sender, EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Control.OnDataBinding(EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Control.DataBind(Boolean raiseOnDataBinding) at System.Web.UI.Control.DataBindChildren() at System.Web.UI.Control.DataBind(Boolean raiseOnDataBinding) at System.Web.UI.Control.DataBindChildren() at System.Web.UI.Control.DataBind(Boolean raiseOnDataBinding) at System.Web.UI.Control.DataBindChildren() at System.Web.UI.Control.DataBind(Boolean raiseOnDataBinding) at System.Web.UI.Control.DataBindChildren() at System.Web.UI.Control.DataBind(Boolean raiseOnDataBinding) at .... Further investigation points out that this error is getting generated from a Theme related assembly (Source : App_Theme_Default.zclakrlo). Any ideas? One of my co-worker suggested that it might be skin file related since we have a theme call "Default" and there is no way to specify a language on a skin file. Therefore, when the asp.net runtime tries to compile it under C#, it will give a name collision? Does this make sense? Any help is appreciated.

  • Design question for WinForms (C#) app, using Entity Framework

    - by cdotlister
    I am planning on writing a small home budget application for myself, as a learning excercise. I have built my database (SQL Server), and written a small console application to interact with it, and test out scenarios on my database. Once I am happy, my next step would be to start building the application - but I am already wondering what the best/standard design would be. I am palnning on using Entity Framework for handling my database entities... then linq to sql/objects for getting the data, all running under a WinForms (for now) application. My plan (I've never used EF... and most of my development background is Web apps) is to have my database... with Entity Framework in it's own project.. which has the connection to the database. This project would expose methods such as 'GetAccount()', 'GetAccount(int accountId)' etc. I'd then have a service project that references my EF project. And on top of that, my GUI project, which makes the calls to my service project. But I am stuck. Lets say I have a screen that displays a list of Account types (Debit, Credit, Loan...). Once I have selected one, the next drop down shows a list of accounts I have that suite that account type. So, my OnChange event on my DropDown on the account type control will make a call to the serviceLayer project, 'GetAccountTypes()', and I would expect back a List< of Account Types. However, the AccountType object ... what is that? That can't be the AccountType object from my EF project, as my GUI project doesn't have reference to it. Would I have to have some sort of Shared Library, shared between my GUI and my Service project, with a custom built AccountType object? The GUI can then expect back a list of these. So my service layer would have a method: public List<AccountType> GetAccountTypes() That would then make a call to a custom method in my EF project, which would probably be the same as the above method, except, it returns an list of EF.Data.AccountType (The Entity Framework generated Account Type object). The method would then have the linq code to get the data as I want it. Then my service layer will get that object, and transform it unto my custom AccountType object, and return it to the GUI. Does that sound at all like a good plan?

  • anonymous problem in linq query

  • Trend analysis using iterative value increments

    - by Dave Jarvis
    We have configured iReport to generate the following graph: The real data points are in blue, the trend line is green. The problems include: Too many data points for the trend line Trend line does not follow a Bezier curve (spline) The source of the problem is with the incrementer class. The incrementer is provided with the data points iteratively. There does not appear to be a way to get the set of data. The code that calculates the trend line looks as follows: import java.math.BigDecimal; import net.sf.jasperreports.engine.fill.*; /** * Used by an iReport variable to increment its average. */ public class MovingAverageIncrementer implements JRIncrementer { private BigDecimal average; private int incr = 0; /** * Instantiated by the MovingAverageIncrementerFactory class. */ public MovingAverageIncrementer() { } /** * Returns the newly incremented value, which is calculated by averaging * the previous value from the previous call to this method. * * @param jrFillVariable Unused. * @param object New data point to average. * @param abstractValueProvider Unused. * @return The newly incremented value. */ public Object increment( JRFillVariable jrFillVariable, Object object, AbstractValueProvider abstractValueProvider ) { BigDecimal value = new BigDecimal( ( ( Number )object ).doubleValue() ); // Average every 10 data points // if( incr % 10 == 0 ) { setAverage( ( value.add( getAverage() ).doubleValue() / 2.0 ) ); } incr++; return getAverage(); } /** * Changes the value that is the moving average. * @param average The new moving average value. */ private void setAverage( BigDecimal average ) { this.average = average; } /** * Returns the current moving average average. * @return Value used for plotting on a report. */ protected BigDecimal getAverage() { if( this.average == null ) { this.average = new BigDecimal( 0 ); } return this.average; } /** Helper method. */ private void setAverage( double d ) { setAverage( new BigDecimal( d ) ); } } How would you create a smoother and more accurate representation of the trend line?

  • Linq-to-sql Compiled Query is caching result from disposed DataContext

    - by Vladimir Kojic
    Compiled query: public static Func<OperationalDataContext, short, Machine> QueryMachineById = CompiledQuery.Compile((OperationalDataContext db, short machineID) => db.Machines.Where(m => m.MachineID == machineID).SingleOrDefault()); It looks like compiled query is caching Machine object and returning the same object even if query is called from new DataContext (I’m disposing DataContext in the service but I’m getting Machine from previous DataContext). I use POCOs and XML mapping. Getting cached object from the same datacontext is ok, but when I call query with new DataContext I don’t want to get object from old datacontext. Is there something that I don’t do right ? Thanks, Vladimir

  • FormatException with IsolatedStorageSettings

    - by Jurgen Camilleri
    I have a problem when serializing a Dictionary<string,Person> to IsolatedStorageSettings. I'm doing the following: public Dictionary<string, Person> Names = new Dictionary<string, Person>(); if (!IsolatedStorageSettings.ApplicationSettings.Contains("Names")) { //Add to dictionary Names.Add("key", new Person(false, new System.Device.Location.GeoCoordinate(0, 0), new List<GeoCoordinate>() { new GeoCoordinate(35.8974, 14.5099), new GeoCoordinate(35.8974, 14.5099), new GeoCoordinate(35.8973, 14.5100), new GeoCoordinate(35.8973, 14.5099) })); //Serialize dictionary to IsolatedStorage IsolatedStorageSettings.ApplicationSettings.Add("Names", Names); IsolatedStorageSettings.ApplicationSettings.Save(); } Here is my Person class: [DataContract] public class Person { [DataMember] public bool Unlocked { get; set; } [DataMember] public GeoCoordinate Location { get; set; } [DataMember] public List<GeoCoordinate> Bounds { get; set; } public Person(bool unlocked, GeoCoordinate location, List<GeoCoordinate> bounds) { this.Unlocked = unlocked; this.Location = location; this.Bounds = bounds; } } The code works the first time, however on the second run I get a System.FormatException at the if condition. Any help would be highly appreciated thanks. P.S.: I tried an IsolatedStorageSettings.ApplicationSettings.Clear() but the call to Clear also gives a FormatException. I have found something new...the exception occurs twenty-five times, or at least that's how many times it shows up in the Output window. However after that, the data is deserialized perfectly. Should I be worried about the exceptions if they do not stop the execution of the program? • Anything wrong with spamming GC.KeepAlive(KeyboardHookPointer)?

    - by Alex
    GC.KeepAlive() References the specified object, which makes it ineligible for garbage collection from the start of the current routine to the point where this method is called. Not really sure about what GC.KeepAlive does other than simply store a reference so the Garbage Collector doesn't collect the object. But does calling GC.KeepAlive() on an object permanently keep an object from being collected? Or do you have to re-call GC.KeepAlive() every so often (and if so, how often)? I want to keep my keyboard hook alive.

  • Dependency Injection for Windows Phone 7

    - by Igor Zevaka
    I was trying to use Unity 2.0 beta 2 for Silverlight in my Windows Phone 7 project and I kept getting this crash: Microsoft.Practices.Unity.Silverlight.dll!Microsoft.Practices.ObjectBuilder2.DynamicMethodConstructorStrategy.DynamicMethodConstructorStrategy() + 0x1f bytes Microsoft.Practices.Unity.Silverlight.dll!Microsoft.Practices.ObjectBuilder2.DynamicMethodConstructorStrategy.DynamicMethodConstructorStrategy() + 0x1f bytes mscorlib.dll!System.Reflection.RuntimeConstructorInfo.InternalInvoke(System.Reflection.RuntimeConstructorInfo rtci = {System.Reflection.RuntimeConstructorInfo}, System.Reflection.BindingFlags invokeAttr = Default, System.Reflection.Binder binder = null, object parameters = {object[0]}, System.Globalization.CultureInfo culture = null, bool isBinderDefault = false, System.Reflection.Assembly caller = null, bool verifyAccess = true, ref System.Threading.StackCrawlMark stackMark = LookForMyCaller) mscorlib.dll!System.Reflection.RuntimeConstructorInfo.InternalInvoke(object obj = null, System.Reflection.BindingFlags invokeAttr = Default, System.Reflection.Binder binder = null, object[] parameters = {object[0]}, System.Globalization.CultureInfo culture = null, ref System.Threading.StackCrawlMark stackMark = LookForMyCaller) + 0x103 bytes mscorlib.dll!System.Activator.InternalCreateInstance(System.Type type = {Name = "DynamicMethodConstructorStrategy" FullName = "Microsoft.Practices.ObjectBuilder2.DynamicMethodConstructorStrategy"}, bool nonPublic = false, ref System.Threading.StackCrawlMark stackMark = LookForMyCaller) + 0xf0 bytes mscorlib.dll!System.Activator.CreateInstance() + 0xc bytes Microsoft.Practices.Unity.Silverlight.dll!Microsoft.Practices.ObjectBuilder2.StagedStrategyChain.AddNew(Microsoft.Practices.Unity.ObjectBuilder.UnityBuildStage stage = Creation) + 0x1d bytes Microsoft.Practices.Unity.Silverlight.dll!Microsoft.Practices.Unity.UnityDefaultStrategiesExtension.Initialize() + 0x6c bytes Microsoft.Practices.Unity.Silverlight.dll!Microsoft.Practices.Unity.UnityContainerExtension.InitializeExtension(Microsoft.Practices.Unity.ExtensionContext context = {Microsoft.Practices.Unity.UnityContainer.ExtensionContextImpl}) + 0x31 bytes Microsoft.Practices.Unity.Silverlight.dll!Microsoft.Practices.Unity.UnityContainer.AddExtension(Microsoft.Practices.Unity.UnityContainerExtension extension = {Microsoft.Practices.Unity.UnityDefaultStrategiesExtension}) + 0x1a bytes Microsoft.Practices.Unity.Silverlight.dll!Microsoft.Practices.Unity.UnityContainer.UnityContainer() + 0xf bytes Thinking I could resolve it I've tried a few things but to no avail. Turns out that this is a rather fundamental problem and my assumption that Windows Phone 7 is Silverlight 3 + Some other stuff is wrong. This page describes the differences between Mobile Silverlight and Silverlight 3. Of particular interest is this: The System.Reflection.Emit namespace is not supported in Silverlight for Windows Phone. This is precisely why Unity is crashing on the phone, DynamicMethodConstructorStrategy class uses System.Reflection.Emit quite extensively... So the question is, what alternative to Unity is there for Windows Phone 7?

  • Odd behavior in Django Form (readonly field/widget)

    - by jamida
    I'm having a problem with a test app I'm writing to verify some Django functionality. The test app is a small "grade book" application that is currently using Alex Gaynor's readonly field functionality http://lazypython.blogspot.com/2008/12/building-read-only-field-in-django.html There are 2 problems which may be related. First, when I flop the comment on these 2 lines below: # myform = GradeForm(data=request.POST, instance=mygrade) myform = GradeROForm(data=request.POST, instance=mygrade) it works like I expect, except of course that the student field is changeable. When the comments are the shown way, the "studentId" field is displayed as a number (not the name, problem 1) and when I hit submit I get an error saying that studentId needs to be a Student instance. I'm at a loss as to how to fix this. I'm not wedded to Alex Gaynor's code. ANY code will work. I'm relatively new to both Python and Django, so the hints I've seen on websites that say "making a read-only field is easy" are still beyond me. // models.py class Student(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=50) parent = models.CharField(max_length=50) def __unicode__(self): return self.name class Grade(models.Model): studentId = models.ForeignKey(Student) finalGrade = models.CharField(max_length=3) # testbed.grades.readonly is alex gaynor's code from testbed.grades.readonly import ReadOnlyField class GradeROForm(ModelForm): studentId = ReadOnlyField() class Meta: model=Grade class GradeForm(ModelForm): class Meta: model=Grade // views.py def modifyGrade(request,student): student = Student.objects.get(name=student) mygrade = Grade.objects.get(studentId=student) if request.method == "POST": # myform = GradeForm(data=request.POST, instance=mygrade) myform = GradeROForm(data=request.POST, instance=mygrade) if myform.is_valid(): grade = myform.save() info = "successfully updated %s" % grade.studentId else: # myform=GradeForm(instance=mygrade) myform=GradeROForm(instance=mygrade) return render_to_response('grades/modifyGrade.html',locals()) // template <p>{{ info }}</p> <form method="POST" action=""> <table> {{ myform.as_table }} </table> <input type="submit" value="Submit"> </form> // Alex Gaynor's code from django import forms from django.utils.html import escape from django.utils.safestring import mark_safe from django.forms.util import flatatt class ReadOnlyWidget(forms.Widget): def render(self, name, value, attrs): final_attrs = self.build_attrs(attrs, name=name) if hasattr(self, 'initial'): value = self.initial return mark_safe("<span %s>%s</span>" % (flatatt(final_attrs), escape(value) or '')) def _has_changed(self, initial, data): return False class ReadOnlyField(forms.FileField): widget = ReadOnlyWidget def __init__(self, widget=None, label=None, initial=None, help_text=None): forms.Field.__init__(self, label=label, initial=initial, help_text=help_text, widget=widget) def clean(self, value, initial): self.widget.initial = initial return initial

  • ICalendar not readable by google calendar.

    Operating system : WinXP Program and version you use to access Google Calendar (FF3.5): I'm developing a script (based on an existing vCal ASP.NET class I found online) to generate an .ics file. This file works perfectly when importing to Outlook 2003. When I try to import to Google Calendar, I get the following error: Failed to import events: Unable to process your iCal/CSV file.. • Why is this code invalid in C#?

    - by mmattax
    The following code will not compile: string foo = "bar"; Object o = foo == null ? DBNull.Value : foo; I get: Error 1 Type of conditional expression cannot be determined because there is no implicit conversion between 'System.DBNull' and 'string' To fix this, I must do something like this: string foo = "bar"; Object o = foo == null ? DBNull.Value : (Object)foo; This cast seems pointless as this is certainly legal: string foo = "bar"; Object o = foo == null ? "gork" : foo; It seems to me that when the ternary branches are of different types, the compiler will not autobox the values to the type object...but when they are of the same type then the autoboxing is automatic. In my mind the first statement should be legal... Can anyone describe why the compiler does not allow this and why the designers of C# chose to do this? I believe this is legal in Java...Though I have not verified this. Thanks. EDIT: I am asking for an understanding of why Java and C# handle this differently, what is going on underneath the scenes in C# that make this invalid. I know how to use ternary, and am not looking for a "better way" to code the examples. I understand the rules of ternary in C#, but I want to know WHY... EDIT (Jon Skeet): Removed "autoboxing" tag as no boxing is involved in this question.

  • What scalability problems have you solved using a NoSQL data store?

    NoSQL refers to non-relational data stores that break with the history of relational databases and ACID guarantees. Popular open source NoSQL data stores include: Cassandra (tabular, written in Java, used by Facebook, Twitter, Digg, Rackspace, Mahalo and Reddit) CouchDB (document, written in Erlang, used by Engine Yard and BBC) Dynomite (key-value, written in C++, used by Powerset) HBase (key-value, written in Java, used by Bing) Hypertable (tabular, written in C++, used by Baidu) Kai (key-value, written in Erlang) MemcacheDB (key-value, written in C, used by Reddit) MongoDB (document, written in C++, used by Sourceforge, Github, Electronic Arts and NY Times) Neo4j (graph, written in Java, used by Swedish Universities) Project Voldemort (key-value, written in Java, used by LinkedIn) Redis (key-value, written in C, used by Engine Yard, Github and Craigslist) Riak (key-value, written in Erlang, used by Comcast and Mochi Media) Ringo (key-value, written in Erlang, used by Nokia) Scalaris (key-value, written in Erlang, used by OnScale) ThruDB (document, written in C++, used by JunkDepot.com) Tokyo Cabinet/Tokyo Tyrant (key-value, written in C, used by Mixi.jp (Japanese social networking site)) I'd like to know about specific problems you - the SO reader - have solved using data stores and what NoSQL data store you used. Questions: What scalability problems have you used NoSQL data stores to solve? What NoSQL data store did you use? What database did you use before switching to a NoSQL data store? I'm looking for first-hand experiences, so please do not answer unless you have that.

  • JPA association table is not deletable

    - by Marcel
    Hi I have a problem with JPA (EclipseLink). I am not able to delete a association table. This is the situation: Product 1:n to ProductResource Resource 1:n to ProductResource I first set the product and resource attributes of ProductResource. If I then try to delete the ProductResource object nothing happens (no sql is generated - no exception). If I comment out both OneToMany annotations in ProductResource I can delete the object. I can also delete the object when product and resource attributes are not set. If I comment out only the annotation above the ressource attribut the ProductResource object gets deleted upon the deletion of the product object (cascade=CascadeType.ALL). I hope someone could give me a hint. Thank you. Product Resource: public class ProductResource implements Serializable { @ManyToOne(fetch=FetchType.EAGER, cascade=CascadeType.MERGE) private Product product; @ManyToOne(fetch=FetchType.EAGER, cascade=CascadeType.MERGE) private Resource resource; Product: public class Product implements Serializable { @OneToMany(mappedBy="product", fetch=FetchType.EAGER, cascade=CascadeType.ALL) private List<ProductResource> productResources = new ArrayList<ProductResource>(); Resource: public class Resource implements Serializable { @OneToMany(mappedBy="resource", fetch=FetchType.EAGER, cascade=CascadeType.ALL) private List<ProductResource> productResources = new ArrayList<ProductResource>(); Greetings Marcel

  • problem with sqldatasource and data binding

    I am trying to pull out data from the table I had from the database according to the id which is passed from the URL. However I always get data from id= 1? Why? FYI I took this code directly from the ClubWebsite starter kit and copy and paste it to my project to make several changes, the ClubWebsite one worked fine.. but this one doesn't and can't find any reason why because they both looked exactly the same. <%@ Page Title="" Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/MasterPage.master" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="Events_View.aspx.cs" Inherits="Events_View" %> <asp:Content ID="Content1" ContentPlaceHolderID="head" Runat="Server"> </asp:Content> <asp:Content ID="Content2" ContentPlaceHolderID="splash" Runat="Server"> <div id="splash4">&nbsp;</div> </asp:Content> <asp:Content ID="Content3" ContentPlaceHolderID="ContentPlaceHolder1" Runat="Server"> <div id="content"> <div class="post"> <asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:ClubDatabase %>" SelectCommand="SELECT dbo.Events.id, dbo.Events.starttime, dbo.events.endtime, dbo.Events.title, dbo.Events.description, dbo.Events.staticURL, dbo.Events.address FROM dbo.Events"> <SelectParameters> <asp:Parameter Type="Int32" DefaultValue="1" Name="id"></asp:Parameter> </SelectParameters> </asp:SqlDataSource> <asp:FormView ID="FormView1" runat="server" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource1" DataKeyNames="id" AllowPaging="false" Width="100%"> <ItemTemplate> <h2> <asp:Label Text='<%# Eval("title") %>' runat="server" ID="titleLabel" /> </h2> <div> <br /> <p> <asp:Label Text='<%# Eval("address") %>' runat="server" ID="addressLabel" /> </p> <p> <asp:Label Text='<%# Eval("starttime","{0:D}") %>' runat="server" ID="itemdateLabel" /> <br /> <asp:Label Text='<%# ShowDuration(Eval("starttime"),Eval("endtime")) %>' runat="server" ID="Label1" /> </p> </div> <p> <asp:Label Text='<%# Eval("description") %>' runat="server" ID="descriptionLabel" /> </p> </ItemTemplate> </asp:FormView> <div class="dashedline"> </div> </div> </div> </asp:Content> using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Web; using System.Web.UI; using System.Web.UI.WebControls; using System.Data.SqlClient; using System.Configuration; using System.Data; public partial class Events_View : System.Web.UI.Page { const int INVALIDID = -1; protected void Page_Load(object sender, System.EventArgs e) { SqlDataSource1.SelectParameters["id"].DefaultValue = System.Convert.ToString(EventID); } public int EventID { get { int m_EventID; object id = ViewState["EventID"]; if (id != null) { m_EventID = (int)id; } else { id = Request.QueryString["EventID"]; if (id != null) { m_EventID = System.Convert.ToInt32(id); } else { m_EventID = 1; } ViewState["EventID"] = m_EventID; } return m_EventID; } set { ViewState["EventID"] = value; } } protected void FormView1_DataBound(object sender, System.EventArgs e) { DataRowView view = (DataRowView)(FormView1.DataItem); object o = view["staticURL"]; if (o != null && o != DBNull.Value) { string staticurl = (string)o; if (staticurl != "") { Response.Redirect(staticurl); } } } protected string ShowLocationLink(object locationname, object id) { if (id != null && id != DBNull.Value) { return "At <a href='Locations_view.aspx?LocationID=" + Convert.ToString(id) + "'>" + (string)locationname + "</a><br/>"; } else { return ""; } } protected string ShowDuration(object starttime, object endtime) { DateTime starttimeDT = (DateTime)starttime; if (endtime != null && endtime != DBNull.Value) { DateTime endtimeDT = (DateTime)endtime; if (starttimeDT.Date == endtimeDT.Date) { if (starttimeDT == endtimeDT) { return starttimeDT.ToString("h:mm tt"); } else { return starttimeDT.ToString("h:mm tt") + " - " + endtimeDT.ToString("h:mm tt"); } } else { return "thru " + endtimeDT.ToString("M/d/yy"); } } else { return starttimeDT.ToString("h:mm tt"); } } }

  • Does my fat-client application belong in the MVC pattern?

    - by boatingcow
    The web-based application I’m currently working on is growing arms and legs! It’s basically an administration system which helps users to keep track of bookings, user accounts, invoicing etc. It can also be accessed via a couple of different websites using a fairly crude API. The fat-client design loosely follows the MVC pattern (or perhaps MVP) with a php/MySQL backend, Front Controller, several dissimilar Page Controllers, a liberal smattering of object-oriented and procedural Models, a confusing bunch of Views and templates, some JavaScripts, CSS files and Flash objects. The programmer in me is a big fan of the principle of “Separation of Concerns” and on that note, I’m currently trying to figure out the best way to separate and combine the various concerns as the project grows and more people contribute to it. The problem we’re facing is that although JavaScript (or Flash with ActionScript) is normally written with the template, hence part of the View and decoupled from the Controller and Model, we find that it actually encompasses the entire MVC pattern... Swap an image with an onmouseover event - that’s Behaviour. Render a datagrid - we’re manipulating the View. Send the result of reordering a list via AJAX - now we’re in Control. Check a form field to see if an email address is in a valid format - we’re consulting the Model. Is it wise to let the database people write up the validation Model with jQuery? Can the php programmers write the necessary Control structures in JavaScript? Can the web designers really write a functional AJAX form for their View? Should there be a JavaScript overlord for every project? If the MVC pattern could be applied to the people instead of the code, we would end up with this: Model - the database boffins - “SELECT * FROM mind WHERE interested IS NULL” Control - pesky programmers - “class Something extends NothingAbstractClass{…}” View - traditionally the domain of the graphic/web designer - “” …and a new layer: Behaviour - interaction and feedback designer - “CSS3 is the new black…” So, we’re refactoring and I’d like to stick to best practice design, but I’m not sure how to proceed. I don’t want to reinvent the wheel, so would anyone have any hints or tips as to what pattern I should be looking at or any code samples from someone who’s already done the dirty work? As the programmer guy, how can I rewrite the app for backend and front end whilst keeping the two separate? And before you ask, yes I’ve looked at Zend, CodeIgnitor, Symfony, etc., and no, they don’t seem to cross the boundary between server logic and client logic!

  • Sending large serialized objects over sockets is failing only when trying to grow the byte Array, bu

    - by FinancialRadDeveloper
    I have code where I am trying to grow the byte array while receiving the data over my socket. This is erroring out. public bool ReceiveObject2(ref Object objRec, ref string sErrMsg) { try { byte[] buffer = new byte[1024]; byte[] byArrAll = new byte[0]; bool bAllBytesRead = false; int iRecLoop = 0; // grow the byte array to match the size of the object, so we can put whatever we // like through the socket as long as the object serialises and is binary formatted while (!bAllBytesRead) { if (m_socClient.Receive(buffer) > 0) { byArrAll = Combine(byArrAll, buffer); iRecLoop++; } else { m_socClient.Close(); bAllBytesRead = true; } } MemoryStream ms = new MemoryStream(buffer); BinaryFormatter bf1 = new BinaryFormatter(); ms.Position = 0; Object obj = bf1.Deserialize(ms); objRec = obj; return true; } catch (System.Runtime.Serialization.SerializationException se) { objRec = null; sErrMsg += "SocketClient.ReceiveObject " + "Source " + se.Source + "Error : " + se.Message; return false; } catch (Exception e) { objRec = null; sErrMsg += "SocketClient.ReceiveObject " + "Source " + e.Source + "Error : " + e.Message; return false; } } private byte[] Combine(byte[] first, byte[] second) { byte[] ret = new byte[first.Length + second.Length]; Buffer.BlockCopy(first, 0, ret, 0, first.Length); Buffer.BlockCopy(second, 0, ret, first.Length, second.Length); return ret; } Error: mscorlibError : The input stream is not a valid binary format. I don't know why its not working. I have lifted the Combine from a suggestion on here too, so I am pretty sure this is not doing the wrong thing? I hope someone can point out where I am going wrong

  • Java synchronized seems ignored

    - by viraptor
    Hi, I've got the following code, which I expected to deadlock after printing out "Main: pre-sync". But it looks like synchronized doesn't do what I expect it to. What happens here? import java.util.*; public class deadtest { public static class waiter implements Runnable { Object obj; public waiter(Object obj) { this.obj = obj; } public void run() { System.err.println("Thead: pre-sync"); synchronized(obj) { System.err.println("Thead: pre-wait"); try { obj.wait(); } catch (Exception e) { } System.err.println("Thead: post-wait"); } System.err.println("Thead: post-sync"); } } public static void main(String args[]) { Object obj = new Object(); System.err.println("Main: pre-spawn"); Thread waiterThread = new Thread(new waiter(obj)); waiterThread.start(); try { Thread.sleep(1000); } catch (Exception e) { } System.err.println("Main: pre-sync"); synchronized(obj) { System.err.println("Main: pre-notify"); obj.notify(); System.err.println("Main: post-notify"); } System.err.println("Main: post-sync"); try { waiterThread.join(); } catch (Exception e) { } } } Since both threads synchronize on the created object, I expected the threads to actually block each other. Currently, the code happily notifies the other thread, joins and exits.

  • Can a ViewController (AdMob AdViewController) control a view that is a subview of the controlled vie

    - by RexOnRoids
    I am trying to use the IB AdMob ad in my app. I followed the instructions provided but I am getting an EXC_BAD_ACCESS from the AdMob class. I am trying to figure out what the problem is. Anyway, my question is Can a ViewController (AdMob AdViewController) control a view that is a subview of the controlled view of another UIViewController? Here is how I set it up: I start off with a UIViewController in IB. Step 1) I add a UIView sized 320 x 48 to the UIView controlled by the UIViewController. Step 2) I add an Object to the hierarchy (not under any other object). Step 3) I set the class of the Object to AdViewController (AdViewController.h of AdMob SDK) Step 4) I set connect the view outlet of the Object to the UIView of Step 1
