• Recover Lost Form Data in Firefox

  Have you ever filled in a text area or form in a webpage and something happens before you can finish it? If you like the idea of recovering that lost data then you will want to have a look at the Lazarus: Form Recovery extension for Firefox. Lazarus: Form Recovery in Action For our first example we chose the comment text box area for one of the articles here at the website. As you can see we were not finished typing in the whole comment yet… Notice the “Lazarus Icon” in the lower right corner. Note: We simulated accidental tab closures for our two examples. After getting our webpage opened up again all of our text was gone. Right clicking within the text area showed two options available…”Recover Text & Recover Form”. Notice that our lost text was listed as a “sub menu”…this could be extremely useful in matching up the appropriate text to the correct webpage if you had multiple tabs open before something happened. Click on the correct text listing to insert it. So easy to finish writing our comment without having to start from zero again. In our second example we chose the sign-up form page for the website. As before we were not finished filling in the form… Getting the webpage opened back up showed the same problem as before…all the entered text was lost. This time we right clicked in the browser window area and there was that wonderful “Recover Form Command” waiting to be used. One click and… All of our lost form data was back and we were able to finish filling in the form. For those who may be interested you can disable Lazarus: Form Recovery on individual websites using the “Context Menu” for the “Status Bar Icon” Options There are three sections in the options and you should take a quick look through them to make any desired modifications in how Lazarus: Form Recovery functions. The first “Options Area” focuses on display/access for the extension. The second “Options Area” allows you to expand the type of data retained, enable removal of data within a given time frame, set up a password, disable search indexing, and enable form data retention while in “Private Browsing Mode”. The third “Options Area” focuses on the Lazarus database itself. Conclusion If you have ever lost text area or form data before then you know how much time could be lost in starting over. Lazarus: Form Recovery helps provide a nice backup solution to get you up and running once again with a minimum of effort. • PPPD Is Locking the Modem and Not Releasing It

  Got an issue with PPPD on one of our system, we have a PC that is used to talk to remote sites via a dial up connection, the modem can both connect out to the sites and the sites also dial back in. Currently I'm having an issue where some times a site ether dials in or we dial out, and it connects, but then blocks the modem and throws and error to kern.log. I've only found two ways to release the modem in this condition, the first is to turn the modem off and on again, the second is to delete the serial lock file, and then SIGKILL pppd. Now I could write into our software to do the latter if the modem is locked, but I would rather stop it from locking in the first place if at all possible. The reason I put this issue in the askubuntu is because we used to use OpenSuse and never had an issue with it, admittedly that was version 11.2 or earlier so its still and old kernel, but I figured I would ask here first anyway. Any suggestions of places to look would be appreciated.

• AdventureWorks2012 now available for all on SQL Azure

  Three days ago I tweeted this: Idea. MSFT could host read-only copies of all the [AdventureWorks] DBs up on #sqlazure for the SQL community to use. RT if agree #sqlfamily — Jamie Thomson (@jamiet) March 24, 2012 Evidently I wasn't the only one that thought this was a good idea because as you can see from the screenshot that tweet has, so far, been retweeted more than fifty times. Clearly there is a desire to see the AdventureWorks databases made available for the community to noodle around on so I am pleased to announce that as of today you can do just that - [AdventureWorks2012] now resides on SQL Azure and is available for anyone, absolutely anyone, to connect to and use* for their own means. *By use I mean "issue some SELECT statements". You don't have permission to issue INSERTs, UPDATEs, DELETEs or EXECUTEs I'm afraid - if you want to do that then you can get the bits and host it yourself. This database is free for you to use but SQL Azure is of course not free so before I give you the credentials please lend me your ears eyes for a short while longer. AdventureWorks on Azure is being provided for the SQL Server community to use and so I am hoping that that same community will rally around to support this effort by making a voluntary donation to support the upkeep which, going on current pricing, is going to be $119.88 per year. If you would like to contribute to keep AdventureWorks on Azure up and running for that full year please donate via PayPal to [email protected]: Any amount, no matter how small, will help. If those 50+ people that retweeted me beforehand all contributed $2 then that would just about be enough to keep this up for a year.   So Ubuntu 12.04, Likewise latest from the beyondtrust website. Joins domain fine. Gets proper information from lw-get-status. Can use lw-find-user-by-name to retrieve/locate users. Can use lw-enum-users to get all users. The errors obviously are correct, the file /lib/security/pam_winbind.so does not exist. If its a dependancy/required, surely it should be part of the package? I've installed/reinstalled, I've used the downloaded package from the beyondtrust website, i've used the repository, nothing seems to work, every method of installing this application generates the same errors for me. UPDATE : Hrmm, I thought likewise didn't use native winbind but its own modules. Installing winbind from apt-get uninstalls pbis-open (likewise) and generates failures when installing if pbis-open is installed first. Uninstalled winbind, reinstalled pbis-open, same issue as above. The file pam_winbind.so does not exist in that location. Setting up pbis-open-legacy (7.0.1.918) ... Installing Packages was successful This computer is joined to DOMAIN.LOCAL New libraries and configurations have been installed for PAM and NSS. Clearly it thinks it has installed it, but it hasn't. It may be a legacy issue with the previous attempt to configure domain integration manually with winbind. Does anyone have a working likewise-open installation and does the /etc/nsswitch.conf include references to winbind? Or do the /etc/pam.d/common-account or /etc/pam.d/common-password reference pam_winbind.so? I'm unsure if those entries are just legacy or setup by likewise. UPDATE 2 : Complete reinstall of OS fixed it and it worked seamlessly, like it was meant to and those 2 PAM files did NOT include entries for pam_winbind.so, so that was the underlying problem. • Introducing MySQL for Excel

  As part of the new product initiatives of the MySQL on Windows group we released a tool that makes the task of getting data in and out of a MySQL Database very friendly and intuitive, and we paired it with one of the preferred applications for data analysis and manipulation in Windows platforms, MS Excel. Welcome to MySQL for Excel, an add-in that is installed and accessed from within the MS Excel’s Data tab offering a wizard-like interface arranged in an elegant yet simple way to help users browse MySQL Schemas, Tables, Views and Procedures and perform data operations against them using MS Excel as the vehicle to drive the data in and out MySQL Databases. One of the coolest features we had in mind designing MySQL for Excel is simplicity. MS Excel is simple and easy to work with, thus liked by many Windows users because they don’t have to be software gurus to use it.  We applied the same principle by targeting MySQL for Excel to any kind of user, so if you are already familiarized with Excel’s interface you will find yourself working with MySQL data in no time. MySQL for Excel is shipped within the MySQL Installer as one of the tools in the suite; if prerequisites are already installed (.NET Framework 4.0, Visual Studio Tools for Office 4.0 and of course MS Office), installing the add-in involves a very few clicks and no further setup to use it. Being an Excel Add-In there is no executable file involved after the installation, running MS Excel and opening the add-in from its Data tab is all that is required. MySQL for Excel automatically integrates with MySQL Workbench (if installed) to share the same connections to MySQL Server installations, that way connections are defined just once in either product saving time.  Opening the Add-In brings the Welcome Panel at the right side of the Excel main window from which connections to MySQL Servers are shown grouped by Local VS Remote connections; then users can open any of those connections by double-clicking it and entering the password of the used account.  Additionally a user can create a connection by clicking on the New Connection action label or edit connections through MySQL Workbench (if installed) by clicking on the Manage Connections action label. Once a connection is opened, the Schema Selection panel is shown, at the top of it the selected connection (connection name, hostname/IP and username). Just below, a list of schemas is displayed where User Schemas are grouped first followed by System Schemas; users can double-click any selected schema to go to the next panel or select a schema and clicking the Next > button. Users can alternatively click on the < Back button to go back to the Welcome Panel to close the current connection and open a new one; also by clicking the Create New Schema action label they can create an empty new schema. Once a schema is opened the DB Object Selection panel is shown, this is actually the place where the fun stuff happens; from here users are able to perform actions against MySQL Tables, Views and Procedures. ">The actions available here are about importing data from a MySQL Table, View or Procedure to Excel, exporting Excel data to a new MySQL Table, appending Excel data to an existing MySQL Table or editing a MySQL Table’s data by using an Excel Worksheet as a user interface to update data in any row/column, insert new rows or delete existing rows in a very easy and friendly way. • Laissez les bon temps rouler! (Microsoft BI Conference 2010)

  Laissez les bons temps rouler" is a Cajun phrase that I heard frequently when I lived in New Orleans in the mid-1990s. It means "Let the good times roll!" and encapsulates a feeling of happy expectation. As I met with many of my peers and new acquaintances at the Microsoft BI Conference last week, this phrase kept running through my mind as people spoke about their plans in their respective businesses, the benefits and opportunities that the recent releases in the BI stack are providing, and their expectations about the future of the BI stack.Notwithstanding some jabs here and there to point out the platform is neither perfect now nor will be anytime soon (along with admissions that the competitors are also not perfect), and notwithstanding several missteps by the event organizers (which I don't care to enumerate), the overarching mood at the conference was positive. It was a refreshing change from the doom and gloom hovering over several conferences that I attended in 2009. Although many people expect economic hardships to continue over the coming year or so, everyone I know in the BI field is busier than ever and expects to stay busy for quite a while.Self-Service BISelf-service was definitely a theme of the BI conference. In the keynote, Ted Kummert opened with a look back to a fairy tale vision of self-service BI that he told in 2008. At that time, the fairy tale future was a time when "every end user was able to use BI technologies within their job in order to move forward more effectively" and transitioned to the present time in which SQL Server 2008 R2, Office 2010, and SharePoint 2010 are available to deliver managed self-service BI.This set of technologies is presumably poised to address the needs of the 80% of users that Kummert said do not use BI today. He proceeded to outline a series of activities that users ought to be able to do themselves--from simple changes to a report like formatting or an addtional data visualization to integration of an additional data source. The keynote then continued with a series of demonstrations of both current and future technology in support of self-service BI. Some highlights that interested me:PowerPivot, of course, is the flagship product for self-service BI in the Microsoft BI stack. In the TechEd keynote, which was open to the BI conference attendees, Amir Netz (twitter) impressed the audience by demonstrating interactivity with a workbook containing 100 million rows. He upped the ante at the BI keynote with his demonstration of a future-state PowerPivot workbook containing over 2 billion records. It's important to note that this volume of data is being processed by a server engine, and not in the PowerPivot client engine. (Yes, I think it's impressive, but none of my clients are typically wrangling with 2 billion records at a time. Maybe they're thinking too small. This ability to work quickly with large data sets has greater implications for BI solutions than for self-service BI, in my opinion.)Amir also demonstrated KPIs for the future PowerPivot, which appeared to be easier to implement than in any other Microsoft product that supports KPIs, apart from simple KPIs in SharePoint. (My initial reaction is that we have one more place to build KPIs. Great. It's confusing enough. I haven't seen how well those KPIs integrate with other BI tools, which will be important for adoption.)One more PowerPivot feature that Amir showed was a graphical display of the lineage for calculations. (This is hugely practical, especially if you build up calculations incrementally. You can more easily follow the logic from calculation to calculation. Furthermore, if you need to make a change to one calculation, you can assess the impact on other calculations.)Another product demonstration will be available within the next 30 days--Pivot for Reporting Services. If you haven't seen this technology yet, check it out at www.getpivot.com. (It definitely has a wow factor, but I'm skeptical about its practicality. However, I'm looking forward to trying it out with data that I understand.)Michael Tejedor (twitter) demonstrated a feature that I think is really interesting and not emphasized nearly enough--overshadowed by PowerPivot, no doubt. That feature is the Microsoft Business Intelligence Indexing Connector, which enables search of the content of Excel workbooks and Reporting Services reports. (This capability existed in MOSS 2007, but was more cumbersome to implement. The search results in SharePoint 2010 are not only cooler, but more useful by describing whether the content is found in a table or a chart, for example.)This may yet be the dawning of the age of self-service BI - a phrase I've heard repeated from time to time over the last decade - but I think BI professionals are likely to stay busy for a long while, and need not start looking for a new line of work. Kummert repeatedly referenced strategic BI solutions in contrast to self-service BI to emphasize that self-service BI is not a replacement for the services that BI professionals provide. After all, self-service BI does not appear magically on user desktops (or whatever device they want to use). A supporting infrastructure is necessary, and grows in complexity in proportion to the need to simplify BI for users.It's one thing to hear the party line touted by Microsoft employees at the BI keynote, but it's another to hear from the people who are responsible for implementing and supporting it within an organization. Rob Collie (blog | twitter), Kasper de Jonge (blog | twitter), Vidas Matelis (site | twitter), and I were invited to join Andrew Brust (blog | twitter) as he led a Birds of a Feather session at TechEd entitled "PowerPivot: Is It the BI Deal-Changer for Developers and IT Pros?" I would single out the prevailing concern in this session as the issue of control. On one side of this issue were those who were concerned that they would lose control once PowerPivot is implemented. On the other side were those who believed that data should be freely accessible to users in PowerPivot, and even acknowledgment that users would get the data they want even if it meant they would have to manually enter into a workbook to have it ready for analysis. For another viewpoint on how PowerPivot played out at the conference, see Rob Collie's observations.Collaborative BII have been intrigued by the notion of collaborative BI for a very long time. Before I discovered BI, I was a Lotus Notes developer and later a manager of developers, working in a software company that enabled collaboration in the legal industry. Not only did I help create collaborative systems for our clients, I created a complete project management from the ground up to collaboratively manage our custom development work. In that case, collaboration involved my team, my client contacts, and me. I was also able to produce my own BI from that system as well, but didn't know that's what I was doing at the time. Only in recent years has SharePoint begun to catch up with the capabilities that I had with Lotus Notes more than a decade ago. Eventually, I had the opportunity at that job to formally investigate BI as another product offering for our software, and the rest - as they say - is history. I built my first data warehouse with Scott Cameron (who has also ventured into the authoring world by writing Analysis Services 2008 Step by Step and was at the BI Conference last week where I got to reminisce with him for a bit) and that began a career that I never imagined at the time.Fast forward to 2010, and I'm still lauding the virtues of collaborative BI, if only the tools will catch up to my vision! Thus, I was anxious to see what Donald Farmer (blog | twitter) and Rita Sallam of Gartner had to say on the subject in their session "Collaborative Decision Making." As I suspected, the tools aren't quite there yet, but the vendors are moving in the right direction. One thing I liked about this session was a non-Microsoft perspective of the state of the industry with regard to collaborative BI. In addition, this session included a better demonstration of SharePoint collaborative BI capabilities than appeared in the BI keynote. One of the use cases that was demonstrated was linking from information to a person, because, as Donald put it, "People don't trust data, they trust people."The Microsoft BI Stack in GeneralA question I hear all the time from students when I'm teaching is how to know what tools to use when there is overlap between products in the BI stack. I've never taken the time to codify my thoughts on the subject, but saw that my friend Dan Bulos provided good insight on this topic from a variety of perspectives in his session, "So Many BI Tools, So Little Time." I thought one of his best points was that ideally you should be able to design in your tool of choice, and then deploy to your tool of choice. Unfortunately, the ideal is yet to become real across the platform. The closest we come is with the RDL in Reporting Services which can be produced from two different tools (Report Builder or Business Intelligence Development Studio's Report Designer), manually, or by a third-party or custom application. I have touted the idea for years (and publicly said so about 5 years ago) that eventually more products would be RDL producers or consumers, but we aren't there yet. Maybe in another 5 years.Another interesting session that covered the BI stack against a backdrop of competitive products was delivered by Andrew Brust. Andrew did a marvelous job of consolidating a lot of information in a way that clearly communicated how various vendors' offerings compared to the Microsoft BI stack. He also made a particularly compelling argument about how the existence of an ecosystem around the Microsoft BI stack provided innovation and opportunities lacking for other vendors. Check out his presentation, "How Does the Microsoft BI Stack...Stack Up?"Expo HallI had planned to spend more time in the Expo Hall to see who was doing new things with the BI stack, but didn't manage to get very far. Each time I set out on an exploratory mission, I got caught up in some fascinating conversations with one or more of my peers. I find interacting with people that I meet at conferences just as important as attending sessions to learn something new. There were a couple of items that really caught me eye, however, that I'll share here.Pragmatic Works. Whether you develop SSIS packages, build SSAS cubes, or author SSRS reports (or all of the above), you really must take a look at BI Documenter. Brian Knight (twitter) walked me through the key features, and I must say I was impressed. Once you've seen what this product can do, you won't want to document your BI projects any other way. You can download a free single-user database edition, or choose from more feature-rich standard or professional editions.Microsoft Press ebooks. I also stopped by the O'Reilly Media booth to meet some folks that one of my acquisitions editors at Microsoft Press recommended. In case you haven't heard, Microsoft Press has partnered with O'Reilly Media for distribution and publishing. Apart from my interest in learning more about O'Reilly Media as an author, an advertisement in their booth caught me eye which I think is a really great move. When you buy Microsoft Press ebooks through the O'Reilly web site, you can receive it in any (or all) of the following formats where possible: PDF, epub, .mobi for Kindle and .apk for Android. You also have lifetime DRM-free access to the ebooks. As someone who is an avid collector of books, I fnd myself running out of room for storage. In addition, I travel a lot, and it's hard to lug my reference library with me. Today's e-reader options make the move to digital books a more viable way to grow my library. Having a variety of formats means I am not limited to a single device, and lifetime access means I don't have to worry about keeping track of where I've stored my files. Because the e-books are DRM-free, I can copy and paste when I'm compiling notes, and I can print pages when necessary. That's a winning combination in my mind!Overall, I was pleased with the BI conference. There were many more sessions that I couldn't attend, either because the room was full when I got there or there were multiple sessions running concurrently that I wanted to see. Fortunately, many of the sessions are accessible for viewing online at http://www.msteched.com/2010/NorthAmerica along with the TechEd sessions.   Are you a Media Center user who just can’t get enough Twitter? If so, you may want to check out the TwitterMCE plugin for Windows Media Center. Download and install TwitterMCE application. (See download link below) When you start Windows Media Center, you’ll find the TwitterMCE icon listed in the Extras. When you open the plug-in you’ll be prompted for a Paypal donation and have to wait out the 15 second timer. Next, you’ll need to log in to your Twitter account. Enter your Twitter account username and password. You can do this with the keyboard or by entering letters and numbers with a Media Center remote. When you are finished, select the Login button.   You’ll be prompted to select Standard or Video Mode. Standard displays items in a more vertical fashion. Video displays them horizontally and one at a time, and also allows you to watch Live TV, a movie, or video at the same time. Reading Your Tweets Clicking on Home allows you to read the latest Twitter messages from your friends. You can access the previous 20 tweets. Scroll up and down to see additional messages in Standard mode, ro right and left in Video mode. Click on the individual Twitter messages to get more information, such as which friend sent the tweet. Create a Tweet To Create a Tweet directly from Media Center, select the Update button. Type out your message using your keyboard or your remote and the on-screen keyboard. When you are finished, select Update to send your Twitter message. A few moments later your new tweet will appear.   To send a tweet while you are watching TV or a video, log in to the TwitterMCE app, choose the Video mode, and select Update.   Enter your tweet with the remote or keyboard. Select Update to send the tweet.   You can also view Mentions, Friends, and Followers selecting the appropriate button.   Scroll through your list of friends to read their latest tweets.   The TwitterMCE plugin works will Windows Vista Premium, Ultimate, and Windows 7. It might not completely replace your favorite Twitter App, but it will allow you to send all the tweets you want without having to take your eyes off your favorite TV programs. • Wireless is detected, but not connecting. Ethernet works. How to correct the wireless address?

  I am running Ubuntu 14.04 with cable internet, and my wireless is detected and connected, but I cannot connect to the internet. I know the problem is with my machine because other machines are connecting to the same router just fine. I can connect via ethernet just fine as well. Here are some notable tests: ping 192.168.0.105 works with 0% packet loss, but ping 192.168.0.1 has 100% packet loss. When I plug in my ethernet, ping 192.168.0.1 works with 0% packet loss. My wireless name is tg, and the router ip is 192.168.0.1 (where I can enter username and password). I suspect that I need to change my wireless address from 192.168.0.105 to 192.168.0.1. • AIX Checklist for stable obiee deployment

  Common AIX configuration issues     ( last updated 27 Aug 2012 ) OBIEE is a complicated system with many moving parts and connection points.The purpose of this article is to provide a checklist to discuss OBIEE deployment with your systems administrators. The information in this article is time sensitive, and updated as I discover new  issues or details. What makes OBIEE different? When Tech Support suggests AIX component upgrades to a stable, locked-down production AIX environment, it is common to get "push back".  "Why is this necessary?  We aren't we seeing issues with other software?"It's a fair question that I have often struggled to answer; here are the talking points: OBIEE is memory intensive.  It is the entire purpose of the software to trade memory for repetitive, more expensive database requests across a network. OBIEE is implemented in C++ and is very dependent on the C++ runtime to behave correctly. OBIEE is aggressively thread efficient;  if atomic operations on a particular architecture do not work correctly, the software crashes. OBIEE dynamically loads third-party database client libraries directly into the nqsserver process.  If the library is not thread-safe, or corrupts process memory the OBIEE crash happens in an unrelated part of the code.  These are extremely difficult bugs to find. OBIEE software uses 99% common source across multiple platforms:  Windows, Linux, AIX, Solaris and HPUX.  If a crash happens on only one platform, we begin to suspect other factors.  load intensity, system differences, configuration choices, hardware failures.  It is rare to have a single product require so many diverse technical skills.   My role in support is to understand system configurations, performance issues, and crashes.   An analyst trained in Business Analytics can't be expected to know AIX internals in the depth required to make configuration choices.  Here are some guidelines. AIX C++ Runtime must be at  version 11.1.0.4$ lslpp -L | grep xlC.aixobiee software will crash if xlC.aix.rte is downlevel;  this is not a "try it" suggestion.Nov 2011 11.1.0.4 version  is appropriate for all AIX versions ( 5, 6, 7 )Download from here:https://www-304.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg24031426 No reboot is necessary to install, it can even be installed while applications are using the current version.Restart the apps, and they will pick up the latest version. Deploy 32-bit or 64-bit ?Early versions of OBIEE offered 32-bit or 64-bit choice to AIX customers.The 32-bit choice was needed if a database vendor did not supply a 64-bit client library.That's no longer an issue and beginning with OBIEE 11, 32-bit code is no longer shipped.A common error that leads to "out of memory" conditions to to accept the 32-bit memory configuration choices on 64-bit deployments.  The significant configuration choices are: Maximum process data (heap) size is in an AIX environment variableLDR_CNTRL=IGNOREUNLOAD@LOADPUBLIC@PREREAD_SHLIB@MAXDATA=0x... Two thread stack sizes are made in obiee NQSConfig.INI[ SERVER ]SERVER_THREAD_STACK_SIZE = 0;DB_GATEWAY_THREAD_STACK_SIZE = 0; Sort memory in NQSConfig.INI[ GENERAL ]SORT_MEMORY_SIZE = 4 MB ;SORT_BUFFER_INCREMENT_SIZE = 256 KB ; Choosing a value for MAXDATA:0x080000000  2GB Default maximum 32-bit heap size ( 8 with 7 zeros )0x100000000  4GB 64-bit breaking even with 32-bit ( 1 with 8 zeros )0x200000000  8GB 64-bit double 32-bit max0x400000000 16GB 64-bit safetyUsing 2GB heap size for a 64-bit process will almost certainly lead to an out-of-memory situation.Registers are twice as big ... consume twice as much memory in the heap.Upgrading to a 4GB heap for a 64-bit process is just "breaking even" with 32-bit.A 32-bit process is constrained by the 32-bit virtual addressing limits.  Heap memory is used for dynamic requirements of obiee software, thread stacks for each of the configured threads, and sometimes for shared libraries. 64-bit processes are not constrained in this way;  extra heap space can be configured for safety against a query that might create a sudden requirement for excessive storage.  If the storage is not available, this query might crash the whole server and disrupt existing users.There is no performance penalty on AIX for configuring more memory than required;  extra memory can be configured for safety.  If there are no other considerations, start with 8GB.Choosing a value for Thread Stack size:zero is the value documented to select an appropriate default for thread stack size.  My preference is to change this to an absolute value, even if you intend to use the documented default;  it provides better documentation and removes the "surprise" factor.There are two thread types that can be configured. GATEWAY is used by a thread pool to call a database client library to establish a DB connection.The default size is 256KB;  many customers raise this to 512KB ( no performance penalty for over-configuring ). This value must be set to 1 MB if Teradata connections are used. SERVER threads are used to run queries.  OBIEE uses recursive algorithms during the analysis of query structures which can consume significant thread stack storage.  It's difficult to provide guidance on a value that depends on data and complexity.  The general notion is to provide more space than you think you need,  "double down" and increase the value if you run out, otherwise inspect the query to understand why it is too complex for the thread stack.  There are protections built into the software to abort a single user query that is too complex, but the algorithms don't cover all situations.256 KB  The default 32-bit stack size.  Many customers increased this to 512KB on 32-bit.  A 64-bit server is very likely to crash with this value;  the stack contains mostly register values, which are twice as big.512 KB  The documented 64-bit default.  Some early releases of obiee didn't set this correctly, resulting in 256KB stacks.1 MB  The recommended 64-bit setting.  If your system only ever uses 512KB of stack space, there is no performance penalty for using 1MB stack size.2 MB  Many large customers use this value for safety.  No performance penalty.nqscheduler does not use the NQSConfig.INI file to set thread stack size.If this process crashes because the thread stack is too small, use this to set 2MB:export OBI_BACKGROUND_STACK_SIZE=2048 Shared libraries are not (shared) When application libraries are loaded at run-time, AIX makes a decision on whether to load the libraries in a "public" memory segment.  If the filesystem library permissions do not have the "Read-Other" permission bit, AIX loads the library into private process memory with two significant side-effects:* The libraries reduce the heap storage available.      Might be significant in 32-bit processes;  irrelevant in 64-bit processes.* Library code is loaded into multiple real pages for execution;  one copy for each process.Multiple execution images is a significant issue for both 32- and 64-bit processes.The "real memory pages" saved by using public memory segments is a minor concern.  Today's machines typically have plenty of real memory.The real problem with private copies of libraries is that they consume processor cache blocks, which are limited.   The same library instructions executing in different real pages will cause memory delays as the i-cache ( instruction cache 128KB blocks) are refreshed from real memory.   Performance loss because instructions are delayed is something that is difficult to measure without access to low-level cache fault data.   The machine just appears to be running slowly for no observable reason.This is an easy problem to detect, and an easy problem to correct.Detection:  "genld -l" AIX command produces a list of the libraries used by each process and the AIX memory address where they are loaded.32-bit public segment is 13 ( "dxxxxxxx" ).   private segments are 2-a.64-bit public segment is 9 ( "9xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx") ; private segment is 8.genld -l | grep -v ' d| 9' | sort +2provides a list of privately loaded libraries. Repair: chmod o+r <libname>AIX shared libraries will have a suffix of ".so" or ".a".Another technique is to change all libraries in a selected directory to repair those that might not be currently loaded.   The usual directories that need repair are obiee code, httpd code and plugins, database client libraries and java.chmod o+r /shr/dir/*.a /shr/dir/*.so Configure your system for diagnosticsProduction systems shouldn't crash, and yet bad things happen to good software.If obiee software crashes and produces a core, you should configure your system for reliable transfer of the failing conditions to Oracle Tech Support.  Here's what we need to be able to diagnose a core file from your system.* fullcore enabled. chdev -lsys0 -a fullcore=true* core naming enabled. chcore -n on -d* ulimit must not truncate core. see item 3.* pstack.sh is used to capture core documentation.* obidoc is used to capture current AIX configuration.* snapcore  AIX utility captures core and libraries. Use the proper syntax. $ snapcore -r corename executable-fullpath   /tmp/snapcore will contain the .pax.Z output file.  It is compressed.* If cores are directed to a common directory, ensure obiee userid can write to the directory.  ( chcore -p /cores -d ; chmod 777 /cores )The filesystem must have sufficient space to hold a crashing obiee application.Use:  df -k  Check the "Free" column ( not "% Used" )  8388608 is 8GB. Disable Oracle Client Library signal handlingThe Oracle DB Client Library is frequently distributed with the sqlplus development kit.By default, the library enables a signal handler, which will document a call stack if the application crashes.   The signal handler is not needed, and definitely disruptive to obiee diagnostics.   It needs to be disabled.   sqlnet.ora is typically located at:   $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/sqlnet.oraAdd this line at the top of the file:   DIAG_SIGHANDLER_ENABLED=FALSE Disable async query in the RPD connection pool.This might be an obiee 10.1.3.4 issue only ( still checking  )."async query" must be disabled in the connection pools.It was designed to enable query cancellation to a database, and turned out to have too many edge conditions in normal communication that produced random corruption of data and crashes.  Please ensure it is turned off in the RPD. Check AIX error report (errpt).Errors external to obiee applications can trigger crashes.  $ /bin/errpt -aHardware errors ( firmware, adapters, disks ) should be reported to IBM support.All application core files are recorded by AIX;  the most recent ones are listed first. • Change The Windows 7 Start Orb the Easy Way

  Want to make your Windows 7 PC even more unique and personalized?  Then check out this easy guide on how to change your start orb in Windows 7. Getting Started First, download the free Windows 7 Start Button Changer (link below), and extract the contents of the folder.  It contains the app along with a selection of alternate start button orbs you can try out.   Before changing the start button, we advise creating a system restore point in case anything goes wrong.  Enter System Restore in your Start menu search, and select “Create a restore point”. Please note:  We tested this on both the 32 bit and 64 bit editions of Windows 7, and didn’t encounter any problems or stability issues.  That said, it is always prudent to make a restore point just in case a problem did happen. Click the Create button… Then enter a name for the restore point, and click Create. Changing the Start Orb. Once this is finished, run the Windows 7 Start Button Changer as administrator by right-clicking on it and selecting “Run as administrator”.  Accept the UAC prompt that will appear. If you don’t run it as an administrator, you may see the following warning.  Click Quit, and then run again as administrator. You should now see the Windows 7 Start Button Changer.  On the left it shows what your current (default) start orb looks like inactive, when hovered over, and when selected.  Click the orb on the right to select a new start button. Here we browsed to the sample orbs folder, and selected one of them.  Let’s give Windows the Media Center orb for a start orb.  Click the orb you want, and then select open. When you click Open, your screen will momentarily freeze and your taskbar will disappear.  When it reappears, your computer will have gone from having the old, default Start orb style… …to your new, exciting Start orb!  Here it is default, and glowing when hovered over. Now, the Windows 7 Start Orb Changer will change, and show your new Start orb on the left side.  If you would like to revert to the default orb, simply click the folder icon to restore it.  Or, if you would like to change the orb again, restore the original first and then select a new one. The orbs don’t have to be round; here’s a fancy Windows 7 logo as the start button. The start orb change will work in the Aero and Aero basic (which Windows 7 Start uses) themes, but will not show up in the classic, Windows 2000 style themes.  Here’s how the new start button looks with the Aero Classic theme: There are tons of orbs available, including this cute smiley, so choose one that you like to make your computer uniquely yours. • Automated SSRS deployment with the RS utility

  If you’re familiar with SSRS and development you are probably aware of the SSRS web services. The RS utility is a tool that comes with SSRS that allows for scripts to be executed against against the SSRS web service without needing to create an application to consume the service. One of the better benefits of using this format rather than writing an application is that the script can be modified by others who might be involved in the creation and addition of scripts or management of the SSRS environment.   Reporting Services Scripter Jasper Smith from http://www.sqldbatips.com created Reporting Services Scripter to assist with the created of a batch process to deploy an entire SSRS environment. The helper scripts below were created through the modification of his generated scripts. Why not just use this tool? You certainly can. For me, the volume of scripts generated seems less maintainable than just using some common methods extracted from these scripts and creating a deployment in a single script file. I would, however, recommend this as a product if you do not think that your environment will change drastically or if you do not need to deploy with a higher level of control over the deployment. If you just need to replicate, this tool works great. Executing with RS.exe Executing a script against rs.exe is fairly simple. The Script Half the battle is having a starting point. For the scripting I needed to do the below is the starter script. A few notes: This script assumes integrated security. This script assumes your reports have one data source each. Both of the above are just what made sense for my scenario and are definitely modifiable to accommodate your needs. If you are unsure how to change the scripts to your needs, I recommend Reporting Services Scripter to help you understand how the differences. The script has three main methods: CreateFolder, CreateDataSource and CreateReport. Scripting the server deployment is just a process of recreating all of the elements that you need through calls to these methods. If there are additional elements that you need to deploy that aren’t covered by these methods, again I suggest using Reporting Services Scripter to get the code you would need, convert it to a repeatable method and add it to this script!   I'm having a lot of trouble connecting to VPN. This used to work on my machine, but i recently did an update and it's stopped working. I'm not sure what the problem is.   I want to try out some features rolled out in Oracle's new JDK 1.7. I followed the post:- Oracle JDK 1.7 but the post doesn't seem to help. • Deploying an SSL Application to Windows Azure &ndash; The Dark Secret

  When working on an application that had been in production for some time, but was about to have a shopping cart added to it, the necessity for SSL certificates came up.  When ordering the certificates through the vendor, the certificate signing request (CSR) was generated through the providers (http://register.com) web interface, and within a day, we had our certificate. At first, I thought that the certification process would be the hard part…  Little did I know that my fun was just beginning… The Problem I’ll be honest, I had never really secured a site before with SSL.  This was a learning experience for me in the first place, but little did I know that I would be learning more than the simple procedure.  I understood a bit about SSL already, the mechanisms in how it works – the secure handshake, CA’s, chains, etc…  What I didn’t realize was the importance of the CSR in the whole process.  Apparently, when the CSR is created, a public key is created at the same time, as well as a private key that is stored locally on the PC that generated the request.  When the certificate comes back and you import it back into IIS (assuming you used IIS to generate the CSR), all of the information is combined together and the SSL certificate is added into your store. Since at the time the certificate had been ordered for our site, the selection to use the online interface to generate the CSR was chosen, the certificate came back to us in 5 separate files: A root certificate – (*.crt file) An intermediate certifcate – (*.crt file) Another intermediate certificate – (*.crt file) The SSL certificate for our site – (*.crt file) The private key for our certificate – (*.key file) Well, in case you don’t know much about Windows Azure and SSL certificates, the first thing you should learn is that certificates can only be uploaded to Azure if they are in a PFX package – securable by a password.  Also, in the case of our SSL certificate, you need to include the Private Key with the file.  As you can see, we didn’t have a PFX file to upload. If you don’t get the simple PFX from your hosting provider, but rather the multiple files, you will soon find out that the process has turned from something that should be simple – to one that borders on a circle of hell… Probably between the fifth and seventh somewhere… The Solution The solution is to take the files that make up the certificates chain and key, and combine them into a file that can be imported into your local computers store, as well as uploaded to Windows Azure.  I can not take the credit for this information, as I simply researched a while before finding out how to do this. Download the OpenSSL for Windows toolkit (Win32 OpenSSL v1.0.1c) Install the OpenSSL for Windows toolkit Download and move all of your certificate files to an easily accessible location (you'll be pointing to them in the command prompt, so I put them in a subdirectory of the OpenSSL installation) Open a command prompt Navigate to the folder where you installed OpenSSL Run the following command: openssl pkcs12 -export –out {outcert.pfx} –inkey {keyfile.key}      –in {sslcert.crt} –certfile {ca1.crt} –certfile (ca2.crt) From this command, you will get a file, outcert.pfx, with the sum total of your ssl certificate (sslcert.crt), private key {keyfile.key}, and as many CA/chain files as you need {ca1.crt, ca2.crt}. Taking this file, you can then import it into your own IIS in one operation, instead of importing each certificate individually.  You can also upload the PFX to Azure, and once you add the SSL certificate links to the cloud project in Visual Studio, your good to go! Conclusion When I first looked around for a solution to this problem, there were not many places online that had the information that I was looking for.  While what I ended up having to do may seem obvious, it isn’t for everyone, and I hope that this can at least help one developer out there solve the problem without hours of work!

• Ubuntu 12.04 LTS initramfs-tools dependency issue

  I know this has been asked several times, but each issue and resolution seems different. I've tried almost everything I could think of, but I can't fix this. I have a VM (VMware I think) running 12.04.03 LTS which has stuck dependencies. I've performed apt-get clean/autoclean/install -f/upgrade -f many times but they won't resolve. I can think of only 2 other 'solutions': Edit the dpkg dependency list to trick it into doing the installation with a broken dependency. This seems very dodgy and it would be a last resort Downgrade both initramfs-tools and initramfs-tools-bin to 0.99ubuntu13 from the precise/main sources and hope that would get them in step. However I'm not sure if this will be possible, or whether it would introduce more issues. I'm not sure how this situation arise in the first place. /boot was 96% full; it's now 56% full (it's tiny - 64MB ... this is what I got from the hosting company). Can anyone offer advice please?
