    I am using Mac OS X 10.5.8 behind a company firewall and have proxy settings and username / password through which I can connect to internet. The internet is working as I am posting this question through it, but if I try to open Facebook or Gmail the following message appears: Safari can’t open the page “https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?[..]” because Safari can’t establish a secure connection to the server “www.google.com” What could be wrong?

  • video card performance monitoring?

    Is there a 'top' like command for monitoring the GPU and memory usage of a video card? I am most interested in Linux commands, but and OS would be interesting. I strongly suspect that for a group of my systems the video cards are being under-utilized (but I have no idea by how much) and would like to re-allocate funds to other bottle-necks. We are using higher end cards, so the price difference between cards is significant. Thank you.

  • How do I set the title of Terminal.app with the fish shell?

    I'm trying the fish shell in Mac OS X, intalled using MacPorts. I'd like to have the title of my Terminal window be my current directory. Currently, the title just says Terminal - fish - 80x24 According to the fish documentation, the default fish_title function should provide this behavior. It doesn't do the right thing in Terminal.app, although it does work with iTerm. Defining my own fish_title function doesn't fix the problem. Has anybody been able to get this to work?

  • Why sometimes Windows cannot kill a process?

    Right now I'm trying to Run/Debung my app on VisualStudio, but it cannot create it because the las instance of the app.vshost.exe is still running. Then, by using the Task Manager i'm trying to kill it, but it just remains there with no signal of activity. Beyond that particular case (maybe a VS bug), i'm very curious about the technical reasons why sometimes Windows cannot kill a process??? Can, an enlighted OS related developer, please try to explain? (And please don't start a Unix/Linux/Mac battle against Windows)

  • How do I make dashboard widgets active on logon?

    There are a few dashboard widget that are useful even when not going in Dashboard. For example, SVN Notifier sends a Growl notification when commits are made to a repository you want to watch. Or, Delivery Status does the same for status update on tracked packages. The thing is when I log into OS X, those status updates won't happen until the first time I actually enter into Dashboard, so it looks like they are not initialized at startup. How to fix this?

    I'm reinstalling Windows on an IBM Thinkpad T43. (Not T43p) I reinstalled the OS and now there a number of drivers that I need to reinstall. Any help would be appreciated. I've been to Lenovo's website. This would be a breeze but the Device Manager lists 2 Unknown devices. How do I figure out what those are?

    I am using (and loving) OS X's Dashboard in dev mode ('defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES') which lets you put the widgets on your desktop directly. The only downside is the widgets are "always on top". So all windows end up going under the widgets instead of above. Is there any way to disable this?

Win7 recognizes the monitor resolution of 1920x1080, and many others. WinDev doesn't; the best resolution I get on that OS is 1600x1200.     I am getting the following message when attempting to connect to our company's SVN repository - the same error occurs whether I try from the OSX command line or Eclipse. Any ideas on where to troubleshoot?   • Single TCP-CLOSE_WAIT connection brings down application till restart

    Recently found a behaviour where my application had a connection in TCP Close_wait state till the app was restarted (after about 5 hours). But during this period the SUnreclaim space was also increasing constantly and went down on restart. The application is runnning on a rhel5 os and Im not very familiar with the memory management system. Would appreciate if someone clould tell me what extactly is the Ureclaim space and why it is increasing in sync with the close_wait.

    Time Warner Cable/ Road Runner router shows up some times on the network list on Mac OS X 10.6.3 Snow Leopard. It makes a spotty appearence on the list. The router is a SMC Networks Model # SMC8014WG-SI.   • Why does only "network" appear in Startup Disks on my Mac?

    I have a Linux dual boot setup with my Mac (with Leopard). When I open System Preferences Startup Disk I only see "Network Startup" and no HDD or BOOTCAMP as expected. So now, annoyingly, because "Network Startup" is the only option, it tries to start using the network (the flashing globe) for a short while rather than booting directly into Mac OS X. Is there a way to either fix Startup Disk or manually hack this?

The chinese input method on Mac OS works just fine, but on Windows, if I use the Google IME for example, a = z q = w etc... so it uses a qwerty layout even though my keyboard is azerty.     I had Windows XP and Ubuntu both installed. I could easily boot into either until Windows "fixed" the bootloader so that it now only boots into Windows. I guess there is no way to prevent Windows from doing this. So instead when it happens how do I quickly restore the GRUB bootloader? Also while I'm here: How do I edit the GRUB menu, to hide options I don't want and to change the default boot OS?
