  • Collecting and viewing statistical data on website usage? Want to give Google Analytics the boot.

    - by amn
I have always been somewhat reluctant to "outsource" site statistics to Google. We have an Apache server running on a Windows server. I am pretty sure all the foundation to collect the needed visitor data are there. I would like to stop using GA, and use some form of application where the data does not travel to a third party but remains at the host, or at least travels to the remote administrator, if it is a log analyzer in a browser. What are my options?

  • Troubleshooting Guides for End-Users

    - by user49995
I am an IT Administrator. I would like to create and distribute simple troubleshooting guides for my end-users. Does anyone know if these can be purchased anywhere? Has anyone tried a similar project and have any advice? For instance a sample entry would read: Can't connect to the internet 1) Check physical connection to internet (cable attached to your computer) 2) check wireless connection 3) ping dns server 4) if Ping fails call Tech Support

  • Run WMIC command across network

    - by C-dizzle
Instead of typing this in a command prompt one at a time: wmic /node:ipaddress /user:administrator /password:mypassword bios get serialnumber How can I run that against one entire subnet and output to a text document? Since I do this every couple months to verify our inventory of computers, I would assume there would be a much of easier way I could put this in a batch script instead of doing it manually.

  • how to install a program for all users on Windows 8?

    - by Bobb
when I install stuff under built-in Administrator - the other users cannot see the changes. for example I changed VS2012 install - added Blend and few other features - and they are invisible under another user - my 'Microsoft account' ... I surely don't want this kind of behavior. Can it be changed? EDIT: I want those apps 'legitimately installed' for all users so I can use Search and see them on my Start screen.

  • gpasswd and access to a file or directory

    - by PeanutsMonkey
As I understand it if I run the command gpasswd -A username directoryname I assign administrator privileges to username for the directory directoryname. This means that username is able to add new members to the group for directoryname without root privileges. Does this also mean that username belongs to the group or do I need to add username to the group using the commands usermod, gpasswd -a or gpasswd -M

  • How do I change permissions for Windows\Temp?

    - by user1413
I am running Windows Vista Ultimate and I want to change the permissions in Windows\Temp. For example, I want to remove the read-only attribute in General. When I do this I get an error that reads, "You will need to provide administrator permission to change these attributes." When I click continue, it does something but the Read-only box is still partially checked. How do I take control of Windows\Temp?

  • Citrix printing permissions

    - by ANervousTwitch
Im trying to get some users printing from a remote citrix server at another company. It seems as though they require local administrator privileges to do so, however Ive been instructed not to give them that. They can print normally from their desktop without issue. Is there some special permission to allow citrix to print through to local/network printers short of granting local admin to these users?

I can not run the Terminal.app after rolling back my system from time machine. Mac OS X Version 10.6.2 It displays the following error. "Your are not authorized to run this application" "The administrator has set your shell to an illegal value" After that I have deleted the file ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Terminal.plist But the same message is displayed. I have repaired all system rights with the DiskUtility but that did not help.

  • What are your favorite open source tools? (that is not very famous)

    - by sucuri
I believe every system administrator is used to open source by now. From Apache to Firefox or Linux, everyone uses it at least a little bit. However, most open source developers are not good in marketing, so I know that there are hundreds of very good tools out there that very few people know. To fill this gap, share your favorite open source tool that you use on your day by day that is not very famous. *I will post mine in the comments.

  • Why can't I share a folder on Vista?

    - by Ken
On Windows Vista, I right-click on a folder, Properties, Sharing tab, and either "Advanced Sharing" or "Share"-"Share" causes an error: Windows File Sharing This program will not run Access is denied. Close My user account is an "administrator" on this machine. I think this behavior changed since my computer was added to the new domain recently. I have other folders shared (from long ago), and they continue to be shared just fine.

  • Are there known policy settings causing unexpectedly terminated RDP sessions to be logged off - Event 551

    - by bernd_k
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa383015(VS.85).aspx states When a user's session is unexpectedly terminated by a network or client failure, the user is disconnected but not logged off. But since we got a new system administrator who installed some policy to terminate disconnected sessions after some hours, I never again could reconnect to to an unexpectedly terminated session (usually VPN problem) I found the following link which shows a similat scenario.

  • How to export User cert with private key in PKCS12 format

    - by andreas-h
I'm running Win2008R2, and have installed an Enterprise CA. I can create user certs, but no matter what I do, I cannot export the private key. I'm using the un-touched User certificate template, and the "allow export of private key" option is selected. Still, whenever I go to the "export" dialogue of the certificate (both as user and as administrator), I don't get asked if I want to export the private key, and the option to select PKCS12 format is grayed out. Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • Pin two shortcuts to same application with different settings to taskbar

    - by Dan Neely
I'd like to have two shortcuts to Visual Studio on my taskbar: one with default settings and a second modified to always run as admin. I know I can manually start a copy with admin rights by right clicking on the shortcut and then right clicking on the name of the application and selecting Run as administrator...; but I'd like to automate the process when I need it (without impeding my ability to start VS without admin rights when I don't need them).

  • Add site to trusted sites through GPO

    - by Matt Bear
I need to add a site to trusted sites on all computers in my domain. I can do it with the "site to zone assignment list", however when I do, it locks trusted sites on the client computer "this setting is managed by your administrator". What I need is a way to add the site, make it persistant, and not affects the users ability to add trusted sites of thier own. (It's a development enviroment, sites are created and tested regularly, they need that ability.)

  • Why can't service account such as Local Service, Network Service, or Local System be managed on a domain level?

    - by smwikipedia
Hi security experts, I read from here that: On a local computer, an administrator can configure the application to run as Local Service, Network Service, or Local System. These service accounts are simple to configure and use but are typically shared among multiple applications and services and cannot be managed on a domain level. I just don't understand why these accounts cannot be managed on a domain level, since they all have well-known SIDs? Thanks for your time.

  • Remotely Administer Workgroup Computers

    - by Steven
At work, I can remotely administer other computers by first adding my domain account as a local admistrator on another computer. After that, I can use remote registry, computer management, and file sharing (\\computer\c$). How can I setup a remote user to be a local administrator on a simple home network without a domain (just a workgroup)?
