  • Neo4j OutOfMemory problem

    - by Edward83
    Hi! This is my source code of Main.java. It was grabbed from neo4j-apoc-1.0 examples. The goal of modification to store 1M records of 2 nodes and 1 relation: package javaapplication2; import org.neo4j.graphdb.GraphDatabaseService; import org.neo4j.graphdb.Node; import org.neo4j.graphdb.RelationshipType; import org.neo4j.graphdb.Transaction; import org.neo4j.kernel.EmbeddedGraphDatabase; public class Main { private static final String DB_PATH = "neo4j-store-1M"; private static final String NAME_KEY = "name"; private static enum ExampleRelationshipTypes implements RelationshipType { EXAMPLE } public static void main(String[] args) { GraphDatabaseService graphDb = null; try { System.out.println( "Init database..." ); graphDb = new EmbeddedGraphDatabase( DB_PATH ); registerShutdownHook( graphDb ); System.out.println( "Start of creating database..." ); int valIndex = 0; for(int i=0; i<1000; ++i) { for(int j=0; j<1000; ++j) { Transaction tx = graphDb.beginTx(); try { Node firstNode = graphDb.createNode(); firstNode.setProperty( NAME_KEY, "Hello" + valIndex ); Node secondNode = graphDb.createNode(); secondNode.setProperty( NAME_KEY, "World" + valIndex ); firstNode.createRelationshipTo( secondNode, ExampleRelationshipTypes.EXAMPLE ); tx.success(); ++valIndex; } finally { tx.finish(); } } } System.out.println("Ok, client processing finished!"); } finally { System.out.println( "Shutting down database ..." ); graphDb.shutdown(); } } private static void registerShutdownHook( final GraphDatabaseService graphDb ) { // Registers a shutdown hook for the Neo4j instance so that it // shuts down nicely when the VM exits (even if you "Ctrl-C" the // running example before it's completed) Runtime.getRuntime().addShutdownHook( new Thread() { @Override public void run() { graphDb.shutdown(); } } ); } } After a few iterations (around 150K) I got error message: "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space at java.nio.HeapByteBuffer.(HeapByteBuffer.java:39) at java.nio.ByteBuffer.allocate(ByteBuffer.java:312) at org.neo4j.kernel.impl.nioneo.store.PlainPersistenceWindow.(PlainPersistenceWindow.java:30) at org.neo4j.kernel.impl.nioneo.store.PersistenceWindowPool.allocateNewWindow(PersistenceWindowPool.java:534) at org.neo4j.kernel.impl.nioneo.store.PersistenceWindowPool.refreshBricks(PersistenceWindowPool.java:430) at org.neo4j.kernel.impl.nioneo.store.PersistenceWindowPool.acquire(PersistenceWindowPool.java:122) at org.neo4j.kernel.impl.nioneo.store.CommonAbstractStore.acquireWindow(CommonAbstractStore.java:459) at org.neo4j.kernel.impl.nioneo.store.AbstractDynamicStore.updateRecord(AbstractDynamicStore.java:240) at org.neo4j.kernel.impl.nioneo.store.PropertyStore.updateRecord(PropertyStore.java:209) at org.neo4j.kernel.impl.nioneo.xa.Command$PropertyCommand.execute(Command.java:513) at org.neo4j.kernel.impl.nioneo.xa.NeoTransaction.doCommit(NeoTransaction.java:443) at org.neo4j.kernel.impl.transaction.xaframework.XaTransaction.commit(XaTransaction.java:316) at org.neo4j.kernel.impl.transaction.xaframework.XaResourceManager.commit(XaResourceManager.java:399) at org.neo4j.kernel.impl.transaction.xaframework.XaResourceHelpImpl.commit(XaResourceHelpImpl.java:64) at org.neo4j.kernel.impl.transaction.TransactionImpl.doCommit(TransactionImpl.java:514) at org.neo4j.kernel.impl.transaction.TxManager.commit(TxManager.java:571) at org.neo4j.kernel.impl.transaction.TxManager.commit(TxManager.java:543) at org.neo4j.kernel.impl.transaction.TransactionImpl.commit(TransactionImpl.java:102) at org.neo4j.kernel.EmbeddedGraphDbImpl$TransactionImpl.finish(EmbeddedGraphDbImpl.java:329) at javaapplication2.Main.main(Main.java:62) 28.05.2010 9:52:14 org.neo4j.kernel.impl.nioneo.store.PersistenceWindowPool logWarn WARNING: [neo4j-store-1M\neostore.propertystore.db.strings] Unable to allocate direct buffer" Guys!   • Placing component on Glass Pane

    - by Chris Lieb
    I have a subclass of JLabel that forms a component of my GUI. I have implemented the ability to drag and drop the component from one container to another, but without any visual effects. I want to have this JLabel follow the cursor during the drag of the item from one container to another. I figured that I could just create a glass pane and draw it on there. However, even after I add the component to the glass pane, set the component visible, and set the glass pane visible, and set the glass pane as opaque, I still so not see the component. I know the component works because I can add it to the content pane and have it show up. How do I add a component to the glass pane? package wpics509s10t7.view; import javax.swing.*; import wpics509s10t7.model.Tile; import java.awt.*; import java.awt.dnd.DragSource; import java.awt.event.AWTEventListener; import java.awt.event.MouseEvent; /** * GlassPane tutorial * "A well-behaved GlassPane" * http://weblogs.java.net/blog/alexfromsun/ * <p/> * This is the final version of the GlassPane * it is transparent for MouseEvents, * and respects underneath component's cursors by default, * it is also friedly for other users, * if someone adds a mouseListener to this GlassPane * or set a new cursor it will respect them * * @author Alexander Potochkin */ public class GlassPane extends JPanel implements AWTEventListener { private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L; private final JFrame frame; private TileView tv; // subclass of JLabel private Point point; private WordStealApp wsa; public GlassPane(JFrame frame, WordStealApp wsa) { super(null); this.wsa = wsa; this.frame = frame; setOpaque(true); setLayout(null); setVisible(true); composite = AlphaComposite.getInstance(AlphaComposite.SRC_OVER, 0.5f); } public void beginDrag(Tile t, Point p) { this.tv = new TileView(t, null, this.wsa, true); this.add(this.tv); System.out.println("Starting point: x=" + p.getX() + ",y=" + p.getY()); this.tv.setLocation((int)p.getX(), (int)p.getY()); this.tv.setVisible(true); } public void endDrag(Point p) { System.out.println("Ending point: x=" + p.getX() + ",y=" + p.getY()); this.remove(this.tv); this.tv.setVisible(false); this.tv = null; } public void eventDispatched(AWTEvent event) { if (event instanceof MouseEvent) { MouseEvent me = (MouseEvent) event; if (!SwingUtilities.isDescendingFrom(me.getComponent(), frame)) { return; } if (me.getID() == MouseEvent.MOUSE_EXITED && me.getComponent() == frame) { if (tv != null) { tv.setVisible(false); } point = null; } else { MouseEvent converted = SwingUtilities.convertMouseEvent(me.getComponent(), me, frame.getGlassPane()); point = converted.getPoint(); } repaint(); } } /** * If someone adds a mouseListener to the GlassPane or set a new cursor * we expect that he knows what he is doing * and return the super.contains(x, y) * otherwise we return false to respect the cursors * for the underneath components */ @Override public boolean contains(int x, int y) { if (getMouseListeners().length == 0 && getMouseMotionListeners().length == 0 && getMouseWheelListeners().length == 0 && getCursor() == Cursor.getPredefinedCursor(Cursor.DEFAULT_CURSOR)) { return false; } return super.contains(x, y); } }

  • Java Synchronized List Deadlock

    - by portoalet
    From Effective Java 2nd edition item 67 page 266-268: The background thread calls s.removeObserver, which attempts to lock observers, but it can’t acquire the lock, because the main thread already has the lock. All the while, the main thread is waiting for the background thread to finish removing the observer, which explains the deadlock. I am trying to find out which threads deadlock in the main method by using ThreadMXBean (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1102359/programmatic-deadlock-detection-in-java) , but why does it not return the deadlocked threads? I used a new Thread to run the ThreadMXBean detection. public class ObservableSet<E> extends ForwardingSet<E> { public ObservableSet(Set<E> set) { super(set); } private final List<SetObserver<E>> observers = new ArrayList<SetObserver<E>>(); public void addObserver(SetObserver<E> observer) { synchronized(observers) { observers.add(observer); } } public boolean removeObserver(SetObserver<E> observer) { synchronized(observers) { return observers.remove(observer); } } private void notifyElementAdded(E element) { synchronized(observers) { for (SetObserver<E> observer : observers) observer.added(this, element); } } @Override public boolean add(E element) { boolean added = super.add(element); if (added) notifyElementAdded(element); return added; } @Override public boolean addAll(Collection<? extends E> c) { boolean result = false; for (E element : c) result|=add(element); //callsnotifyElementAdded return result; } public static void main(String[] args) { ObservableSet<Integer> set = new ObservableSet<Integer>(new HashSet<Integer>()); final ThreadMXBean threadMxBean = ManagementFactory.getThreadMXBean(); Thread t = new Thread(new Runnable() { @Override public void run() { while( true ) { long [] threadIds = threadMxBean.findDeadlockedThreads(); if( threadIds != null) { ThreadInfo[] infos = threadMxBean.getThreadInfo(threadIds); for( ThreadInfo threadInfo : infos) { StackTraceElement[] stacks = threadInfo.getStackTrace(); for( StackTraceElement stack : stacks ) { System.out.println(stack.toString()); } } } try { System.out.println("Sleeping.."); TimeUnit.MILLISECONDS.sleep(1000); } catch (InterruptedException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } } } }); t.start(); set.addObserver(new SetObserver<Integer>() { public void added(ObservableSet<Integer> s, Integer e) { ExecutorService executor = Executors.newSingleThreadExecutor(); final SetObserver<Integer> observer = this; try { executor.submit(new Runnable() { public void run() { s.removeObserver(observer); } }).get(); } catch (ExecutionException ex) { throw new AssertionError(ex.getCause()); } catch (InterruptedException ex) { throw new AssertionError(ex.getCause()); } finally { executor.shutdown(); } } }); for (int i = 0; i < 100; i++) set.add(i); } } public interface SetObserver<E> { // Invoked when an element is added to the observable set void added(ObservableSet<E> set, E element); } // ForwardingSet<E> simply wraps another Set and forwards all operations to it.

  • Trouble with detecting gestures over ListView

    - by Andrew
    I have an Activity that contains a ViewFlipper. The ViewFlipper includes 2 layouts, both of which are essentially just ListViews. So the idea here is that I have two lists and to navigate from one to the other I would use a horizontal swipe. I have that working. However, what ever list item your finger is on when the swipe begins executing, that item will also be long-clicked. Here is the relevant code I have: public class MyActivity extends Activity implements OnItemClickListener, OnClickListener { private static final int SWIPE_MIN_DISTANCE = 120; private static final int SWIPE_MAX_OFF_PATH = 250; private static final int SWIPE_THRESHOLD_VELOCITY = 200; private GestureDetector mGestureDetector; View.OnTouchListener mGestureListener; class MyGestureDetector extends SimpleOnGestureListener { @Override public boolean onFling(MotionEvent e1, MotionEvent e2, float velocityX, float velocityY) { try { if (Math.abs(e1.getY() - e2.getY()) > SWIPE_MAX_OFF_PATH) return false; // right to left swipe if(e1.getX() - e2.getX() > SWIPE_MIN_DISTANCE && Math.abs(velocityX) > SWIPE_THRESHOLD_VELOCITY) { if (mCurrentScreen != SCREEN_SECONDLIST) { mCurrentScreen = SCREEN_SECONDLIST; mFlipper.setInAnimation(inFromRightAnimation()); mFlipper.setOutAnimation(outToLeftAnimation()); mFlipper.showNext(); updateNavigationBar(); } } else if (e2.getX() - e1.getX() > SWIPE_MIN_DISTANCE && Math.abs(velocityX) > SWIPE_THRESHOLD_VELOCITY) { if (mCurrentScreen != SCREEN_FIRSTLIST) { mCurrentScreen = SCREEN_FIRSTLIST; mFlipper.setInAnimation(inFromLeftAnimation()); mFlipper.setOutAnimation(outToRightAnimation()); mFlipper.showPrevious(); updateNavigationBar(); } } } catch (Exception e) { // nothing } return true; } } @Override public boolean onTouchEvent(MotionEvent event) { if (mGestureDetector.onTouchEvent(event)) return true; else return false; } ViewFlipper mFlipper; private int mCurrentScreen = SCREEN_FIRSTLIST; private ListView mList1; private ListView mList2; /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_NO_TITLE); setContentView(R.layout.layout_flipper); mFlipper = (ViewFlipper) findViewById(R.id.flipper); mGestureDetector = new GestureDetector(new MyGestureDetector()); mGestureListener = new View.OnTouchListener() { public boolean onTouch(View v, MotionEvent event) { if (mGestureDetector.onTouchEvent(event)) { return true; } return false; } }; // set up List1 screen mList1List = (ListView)findViewById(R.id.list1); mList1List.setOnItemClickListener(this); mList1List.setOnTouchListener(mGestureListener); // set up List2 screen mList2List = (ListView)findViewById(R.id.list2); mList2List.setOnItemClickListener(this); mList2List.setOnTouchListener(mGestureListener); } … } If I change the "return true;" statement from the GestureDetector to "return false;", I do not get long-clicks. Unfortunately, I get regular clicks. Does anyone know how I can get around this?

  • MouseMotionListener inside JTable

    - by Harish
    I am trying to add MouseMotion event to the label and move it based on the dragging of the mouse and make it move along with my mouse.However the mousemotion is very difficult to control making this action not usable. Here is the code import java.awt.Color; import java.awt.Component; import java.awt.event.MouseEvent; import java.awt.event.MouseMotionListener; import javax.swing.BorderFactory; import javax.swing.JFrame; import javax.swing.JLabel; import javax.swing.JScrollPane; import javax.swing.JTable; import javax.swing.SwingConstants; import javax.swing.SwingUtilities; import javax.swing.table.DefaultTableCellRenderer; import javax.swing.table.DefaultTableModel; public class TableTest { public TableTest() { String[] columnNames = { "FileName", "Integer" }; Object[][] data = { { new FileName("AAA.jpg", Color.YELLOW), new Integer(2) }, { new FileName("BBB.png", Color.GREEN), new FileName("BBB.png", Color.GREEN) }, { new FileName("CCC.jpg", Color.RED), new Integer(-1) }, }; DefaultTableModel model = new DefaultTableModel(data, columnNames) { public Class getColumnClass(int column) { System.out.println("column is" + column); return getValueAt(0, column).getClass(); } }; JTable table = new JTable(model); //JTable table = new JTable(data, columnNames); table.setDefaultRenderer(FileName.class, new FileNameCellRenderer()); final JLabel label = new JLabel("TESTING", SwingConstants.CENTER); label.setBackground(java.awt.Color.RED); label.setBounds(450, 100, 90, 20); label.setOpaque(true); label.setVisible(true); label.addMouseMotionListener(new MouseMotionListener() { public void mouseDragged(MouseEvent arg0) { label.setBounds(arg0.getX(), arg0.getY(), 90, 20); } public void mouseMoved(MouseEvent arg0) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub } }); table.add(label); JFrame frame = new JFrame(); frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); frame.getContentPane().add(table); frame.setSize(800, 600); frame.setLocationRelativeTo(null); frame.setVisible(true); } static class FileNameCellRenderer extends DefaultTableCellRenderer { public Component getTableCellRendererComponent(JTable table, Object v, boolean isSelected, boolean hasFocus, int row, int column) { super.getTableCellRendererComponent(table, v, isSelected, hasFocus, row, column); FileName fn = (FileName) v; setBorder(BorderFactory.createMatteBorder(0, 60, 0, 0, new java.awt.Color(143, 188, 143))); return this; } } static class FileName { public final Color color; public final String label; FileName(String l, Color c) { this.label = l; this.color = c; } public String toString() { return label; } } public static void main(String[] args) { SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() { public void run() { new TableTest(); } }); } } I just want to make the label follow the label follow my mouse and the label should be attached to the table.Is there an easy way than this.

  • Failure in Yahoo Authentication in Android

    - by Jayson Tamayo
    I'm trying to integrate Yahoo into my application. I want them to login using their Yahoo accounts because I will be needing their names later in the application. What am I doing wrong?

  • Why isn't my algorithm for find the biggest and smallest inputs working?

    - by Matt Ellen
    I have started a new job, and with it comes a new language: Ironpython. Thankfully a good language :D Before starting I got to grips with Python on the whole, but that was only a week's worth of learning. Now I'm writing actual code. I've been charged with writing an algorithm that finds the best input parameter to collect data with. The basic algorithm is (as I've been instructed): Set the input parameter to a good guess Start collecting data When data is available stop collecting find the highest point If the point before this (i.e. for the previous parameter value) was higher and the point before that was lower then we've found the max otherwise the input parameter is increased by the initial guess. goto 2 If the max is found then the min needs to be found. To do this the algorithm carries on increasing the input, but by 1/10 of the max, until the current point is greater than the previous point and the point before that is also greater. Once the min is found then the algorithm stops. Currently I have a simplified data generator outputting the sin of the input, so that I know that the min value should be PI and the max value should be PI/2 The main Python code looks like this (don't worry, this is just for my edification, I don't write real code like this): import sys sys.path.append(r"F:\Programming Source\C#\PythonHelp\PythonHelp\bin\Debug") import clr clr.AddReferenceToFile("PythonHelpClasses.dll") import PythonHelpClasses from PHCStruct import Helper from System import Math helper = Helper() def run(): b = PythonHelpClasses.Executor() a = PythonHelpClasses.HasAnEvent() b.Input = 0.0 helper.__init__() def AnEventHandler(e): b.Stop() h = helper h.lastLastVal, h.lastVal, h.currentVal = h.lastVal, h.currentVal, e.Number if h.lastLastVal < h.lastVal and h.currentVal < h.lastVal and h.NotPast90: h.NotPast90 = False h.bestInput = h.lastInput inputInc = 0.0 if h.NotPast90: inputInc = Math.PI/10.0 else: inputInc = h.bestInput/10.0 if h.lastLastVal > h.lastVal and h.currentVal > h.lastVal and h.NotPast180: h.NotPast180 = False if h.NotPast180: h.lastInput, b.Input = b.Input, b.Input + inputInc b.Start(a) else: print "Best input:", h.bestInput print "Last input:", h.lastInput b.Stop() a.AnEvent += AnEventHandler b.Start(a) PHCStruct.py: class Helper(): def __init__(self): self.currentVal = 0 self.lastVal = 0 self.lastLastVal = 0 self.NotPast90 = True self.NotPast180 = True self.bestInput = 0 self.lastInput = 0 PythonHelpClasses has two small classes I wrote in C# before I realised how to do it in Ironpython. Executor runs a delegate asynchronously while it's running member is true. The important code: public void Start(HasAnEvent hae) { running = true; RunDelegate r = new RunDelegate(hae.UpdateNumber); AsyncCallback ac = new AsyncCallback(UpdateDone); IAsyncResult ar = r.BeginInvoke(Input, ac, null); } public void Stop() { running = false; } public void UpdateDone(IAsyncResult ar) { RunDelegate r = (RunDelegate)((AsyncResult)ar).AsyncDelegate; r.EndInvoke(ar); if (running) { AsyncCallback ac = new AsyncCallback(UpdateDone); IAsyncResult ar2 = r.BeginInvoke(Input, ac, null); } } HasAnEvent has a function that generates the sin of its input and fires an event with that result as its argument. i.e.: public void UpdateNumber(double val) { AnEventArgs e = new AnEventArgs(Math.Sin(val)); System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(1000); if (null != AnEvent) { AnEvent(e); } } The sleep is in there just to slow things down a bit. The problem I am getting is that the algorithm is not coming up with the best input being PI/2 and the final input being PI, but I can't see why. Also the best and final inputs are different each time I run the programme. Can anyone see why? Also when the algorithm terminates the best and final inputs are printed to the screen multiple times, not just once. Can someone explain why?

  • HttpClient multithread performance

    - by pepper
    I have an application which downloads more than 4500 html pages from 62 target hosts using HttpClient (4.1.3 or 4.2-beta). It runs on Windows 7 64-bit. Processor - Core i7 2600K. Network bandwidth - 54 Mb/s. At this moment it uses such parameters: DefaultHttpClient and PoolingClientConnectionManager; Also it hasIdleConnectionMonitorThread from http://hc.apache.org/httpcomponents-client-ga/tutorial/html/connmgmt.html; Maximum total connections = 80; Default maximum connections per route = 5; For thread management it uses ForkJoinPool with the parallelism level = 5 (Do I understand correctly that it is a number of working threads?) In this case my network usage (in Windows task manager) does not rise above 2.5%. To download 4500 pages it takes 70 minutes. And in HttpClient logs I have such things: DEBUG ForkJoinPool-2-worker-1 [org.apache.http.impl.conn.PoolingClientConnectionManager]: Connection released: [id: 209][route: {}-http://stackoverflow.com][total kept alive: 6; route allocated: 1 of 5; total allocated: 10 of 80] Total allocated connections do not raise above 10-12, in spite of that I've set it up to 80 connections. If I'll try to rise parallelism level to 20 or 80, network usage remains the same but a lot connection time-outs will be generated. I've read tutorials on hc.apache.org (HttpClient Performance Optimization Guide and HttpClient Threading Guide) but they does not help. Task's code looks like this: public class ContentDownloader extends RecursiveAction { private final HttpClient httpClient; private final HttpContext context; private List<Entry> entries; public ContentDownloader(HttpClient httpClient, List<Entry> entries){ this.httpClient = httpClient; context = new BasicHttpContext(); this.entries = entries; } private void computeDirectly(Entry entry){ final HttpGet get = new HttpGet(entry.getLink()); try { HttpResponse response = httpClient.execute(get, context); int statusCode = response.getStatusLine().getStatusCode(); if ( (statusCode >= 400) && (statusCode <= 600) ) { logger.error("Couldn't get content from " + get.getURI().toString() + "\n" + response.toString()); } else { HttpEntity entity = response.getEntity(); if (entity != null) { String htmlContent = EntityUtils.toString(entity).trim(); entry.setHtml(htmlContent); EntityUtils.consumeQuietly(entity); } } } catch (Exception e) { } finally { get.releaseConnection(); } } @Override protected void compute() { if (entries.size() <= 1){ computeDirectly(entries.get(0)); return; } int split = entries.size() / 2; invokeAll(new ContentDownloader(httpClient, entries.subList(0, split)), new ContentDownloader(httpClient, entries.subList(split, entries.size()))); } } And the question is - what is the best practice to use multi threaded HttpClient, may be there is a some rules for setting up ConnectionManager and HttpClient? How can I use all of 80 connections and raise network usage? If necessary, I will provide more code.

    here is what i have so far: A working Webdriver based Java class, which logs-in to the application and goes to a Home page: import java.io.File; import java.io.IOException; import java.util.concurrent.TimeUnit; import org.apache.commons.io.FileUtils; import org.openqa.selenium.By; import org.openqa.selenium.OutputType; import org.openqa.selenium.TakesScreenshot; import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver; import org.openqa.selenium.firefox.FirefoxDriver; import org.openqa.selenium.firefox.FirefoxProfile; import org.testng.AssertJUnit; import org.testng.annotations.AfterMethod; import org.testng.annotations.BeforeMethod; import org.testng.annotations.Test; public class MLoginFFTest { private WebDriver driver; private String baseUrl; private String fileName = "screenshot.png"; @BeforeMethod public void setUp() throws Exception { FirefoxProfile profile = new FirefoxProfile(); profile.setPreference("network.http.phishy-userpass-length", 255); profile.setAssumeUntrustedCertificateIssuer(false); driver = new FirefoxDriver(profile); baseUrl = "https://a.b.c.d/"; driver.manage().timeouts().implicitlyWait(30, TimeUnit.SECONDS); } @Test public void testAccountLogin() throws Exception { driver.get(baseUrl + "web/certLogon.jsp"); driver.findElement(By.name("logonName")).clear(); AssertJUnit.assertEquals(driver.findElement(By.name("logonName")) .getTagName(), "input"); AssertJUnit.assertEquals(driver.getTitle(), "DA Logon"); driver.findElement(By.name("logonName")).sendKeys("username"); driver.findElement(By.name("password")).clear(); driver.findElement(By.name("password")).sendKeys("password"); driver.findElement(By.name("submit")).click(); driver.findElement(By.linkText("Account")).click(); AssertJUnit.assertEquals(driver.getTitle(), "View Account"); } @AfterMethod public void tearDown() throws Exception { File screenshot = ((TakesScreenshot) driver) .getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE); try { FileUtils.copyFile(screenshot, new File(fileName)); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } driver.quit(); } } Now as we see there are 2 pages: 1. Login page, where i have to enter username and password, and homepage, where i would be taken, once the authentication succeeds. Now i want to implement this as PageObjects using Pagefactory: so i have : package com.example.pageobjects; import static com.example.setup.SeleniumDriver.getDriver; import java.util.concurrent.TimeUnit; import org.openqa.selenium.support.PageFactory; import org.openqa.selenium.support.ui.ExpectedCondition; import org.openqa.selenium.support.ui.FluentWait; import org.openqa.selenium.support.ui.Wait; public abstract class MPage<T> { private static final String BASE_URL = "https://a.b.c.d/"; private static final int LOAD_TIMEOUT = 30; private static final int REFRESH_RATE = 2; public T openPage(Class<T> clazz) { T page = PageFactory.initElements(getDriver(), clazz); getDriver().get(BASE_URL + getPageUrl()); ExpectedCondition pageLoadCondition = ((MPage) page).getPageLoadCondition(); waitForPageToLoad(pageLoadCondition); return page; } private void waitForPageToLoad(ExpectedCondition pageLoadCondition) { Wait wait = new FluentWait(getDriver()) .withTimeout(LOAD_TIMEOUT, TimeUnit.SECONDS) .pollingEvery(REFRESH_RATE, TimeUnit.SECONDS); wait.until(pageLoadCondition); } /** * Provides condition when page can be considered as fully loaded. * * @return */ protected abstract ExpectedCondition getPageLoadCondition(); /** * Provides page relative URL/ * * @return */ public abstract String getPageUrl(); } And for login Page not sure how i would implement that, as well as the Test, which would call these pages.

I have the: public class MyApp extends JFrame{ And from there i do; MyServer = new MyServer (this); MyServer.execute(); MyServer is a: public class MyServer extends SwingWorker<String, Object> { MyServer is doing listen_socket.accept() in the doInBackground() and on connection it create a new class Connection implements Runnable { I have the belove DbHelper that are a singleton. It holds an Sqlite connected. Im initiating it in the above MyApp and passing references all the way in to my runnable: class Connection implements Runnable { My question is what will happen if there are two simultaneous read or `write? • Servlet response wrapper has encoding problem

    - by John O
    A servlet response wrapper is being used in a Servlet Filter. The idea is that the response is manipulated, with a 'nonce' value being injected into forms, as part of defence against CSRF attacks. The web app is using UTF-8 everywhere. When the Servlet Filter is absent, no problems. When the filter is added, encoding issues occur. (It seems as if the response is reverting to 8859-1.) The guts of the code : final class CsrfResponseWrapper extends AbstractResponseWrapper { ... byte[] modifyResponse(byte[] aInputResponse){ ... String originalInput = new String(aInputResponse, encoding); String modifiedResult = addHiddenParamToPostedForms(originalInput); result = modifiedResult.getBytes(encoding); ... } ... } As I understand it, the transition between byte-land and String-land should specify an encoding. That is done here, as you can see, in two places. The value of the 'encoding' variable is 'UTF-8'; the alteration of the String itself is standard string manipulation (with a regex), and never specifies an encoding (addHiddenParamToPostedForms). Where am I in error about the encoding? EDIT: Here is the base class (sorry it's rather long): package hirondelle.web4j.security; import javax.servlet.ServletOutputStream; import javax.servlet.ServletResponse; import javax.servlet.http.HttpServletResponse; import javax.servlet.http.HttpServletResponseWrapper; import java.io.ByteArrayOutputStream; import java.io.IOException; import java.io.PrintWriter; /** Abstract Base Class for altering response content. • Can someone explain this color wheel code to me?

    - by user1869438
    I just started doing java and i need some help with understanding this code. I got it from a this website. This is supposed to be code for a color wheel but i don't really understand how it works, especially the final ints STEPS and SLICES. import java.awt.Color; import objectdraw.*; public class ColorWheel extends WindowController { private double brightness; private Text text; private FilledRect swatch; private Location center; private int size; private FilledRect brightnessOverlay; private static final int SLICES = 96; private static final int STEPS = 16; public void begin() { canvas.setBackground(Color.BLACK); brightness = 1.; size = Math.min(canvas.getWidth(), canvas.getHeight() - 20); center = new Location(canvas.getWidth() / 2, size / 2); for(int j = STEPS; j >= 1; j--) { int arcSize = size * j / STEPS; int x = center.getX() - arcSize / 2; int y = center.getY() - arcSize / 2; for(int i = 0; i < SLICES; i++) { Color c = Color.getHSBColor((float)i / SLICES, (float)j / STEPS, (float)brightness); new FilledArc(x, y, arcSize, arcSize, i * 360. / SLICES, 360. / SLICES + .5, c, canvas); } } swatch = new FilledRect(0, canvas.getHeight() - 20, canvas.getWidth(), 20, Color.BLACK, canvas); brightnessOverlay = new FilledRect(0, 0, canvas.getWidth(), canvas.getHeight() - 20, new Color(0, 0, 0, 0), canvas); text = new Text("", canvas.getWidth() / 2, canvas.getHeight() - 18, canvas); text.setAlignment(Text.CENTER, Text.TOP); text.setBold(true); } public void onMouseDrag(Location point) { brightness = (canvas.getHeight() - point.getY()) / (double)(canvas.getHeight()); if(brightness < 0) { brightness = 0; } else if(brightness > 1) { brightness = 1; } if(brightness < .5) { text.setColor(Color.WHITE); } else { text.setColor(Color.BLACK); } brightnessOverlay.setColor(new Color(0f, 0f, 0f, (float)(1 - brightness))); } public void onMouseMove(Location point) { double saturation = 2 * center.distanceTo(point) / size; if(saturation > 1) { text.setText(""); swatch.setColor(Color.BLACK); return; } double hue = -Math.atan2(point.getY() - center.getY(), point.getX() - center.getX()) / (2 * Math.PI); if(hue < 0) { hue += 1; } swatch.setColor(Color.getHSBColor((float)hue, (float)saturation, (float)brightness)); text.setText("Color.getHSBColor(" + Text.formatDecimal(hue, 2) + "f, " + Text.formatDecimal(saturation, 2) + "f, " + Text.formatDecimal(brightness, 2) + "f)"); } }

  • Using my custom colormap in Java for images

    - by John
    Hi everyone! I've got a question concering a colormapping via index. I tried this code found on http://www.podgoretsky.pri.ee/ftp/Docs/Java/Tricks%20of%20the%20Java%20Programming%20Gurus/ch12.htm // Gradient.java // Imports import java.applet.Applet; import java.awt.; import java.awt.image.; public class Gradient extends Applet { final int colors = 32; final int width = 200; final int height = 200; Image img; public void init() { // Create the color map byte[] rbmap = new byte[colors]; byte[] gmap = new byte[colors]; for (int i = 0; i < colors; i++) gmap[i] = (byte)((i * 255) / (colors - 1)); // Create the color model int bits = (int)Math.ceil(Math.log(colors) / Math.log(2)); IndexColorModel model = new IndexColorModel(bits, colors, rbmap, gmap, rbmap); // Create the pixels int pixels[] = new int[width * height]; int index = 0; for (int y = 0; y < height; y++) for (int x = 0; x < width; x++) pixels[index++] = (x * colors) / width; // Create the image img = createImage(new MemoryImageSource(width, height, model, pixels, 0, width)); } public void paint(Graphics g) { g.drawImage(img, 0, 0, this); } } It worked great but I tried to load a custom image jpeg mapped on my own colormap but it didnt work right. I saw only a bunch of green and blue pixels drawn on a white background. My custom color map method here: public void inintByteArrays() { double[][] c = // basic color map { { 0.0000, 0.0000, 0.5625 }, { 0.0000, 0.0000, 0.6250 }, { 0.0000, 0.0000, 0.6875 }, { 0.0000, 0.0000, 0.6875 }, { 0.0000, 0.0000, 0.7500 }, { 0.0000, 0.0000, 0.8125 }, { 0.0000, 0.0000, 0.8750 }, { 0.0000, 0.0000, 0.9375 }, { 0.0000, 0.0000, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.0625, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.1250, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.1875, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.2500, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.3125, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.3750, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.4375, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.5000, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.5625, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.6250, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.6875, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.7500, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.8125, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.8750, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 0.9375, 1.0000 }, { 0.0000, 1.0000, 1.0000 }, { 0.0625, 1.0000, 0.9375 }, { 0.1250, 1.0000, 0.8750 }, { 0.1875, 1.0000, 0.8125 }, { 0.2500, 1.0000, 0.7500 }, { 0.3125, 1.0000, 0.6875 }, { 0.3750, 1.0000, 0.6250 }, { 0.4375, 1.0000, 0.5625 }, { 0.5000, 1.0000, 0.5000 }, { 0.5625, 1.0000, 0.4375 }, { 0.6250, 1.0000, 0.3750 }, { 0.6875, 1.0000, 0.3125 }, { 0.7500, 1.0000, 0.2500 }, { 0.8125, 1.0000, 0.1875 }, { 0.8750, 1.0000, 0.1250 }, { 0.9375, 1.0000, 0.0625 }, { 1.0000, 1.0000, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.9375, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.8750, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.8125, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.7500, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.6875, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.6250, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.5625, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.5000, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.4375, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.3750, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.3125, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.2500, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.1875, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.1250, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.0625, 0.0000 }, { 1.0000, 0.0000, 0.0000 }, { 0.9375, 0.0000, 0.0000 }, { 0.8750, 0.0000, 0.0000 }, { 0.8125, 0.0000, 0.0000 }, { 0.7500, 0.0000, 0.0000 }, { 0.6875, 0.0000, 0.0000 }, { 0.6250, 0.0000, 0.0000 }, { 0.5625, 0.0000, 0.0000 }, { 0.5000, 0.0000, 0.0000 } }; for (int i = 0; i < c.length; i++) { for (int j = 0; j < c[i].length; j++) { if (j == 0) r[i] = (byte) ((byte) c[i][j]*255); if (j == 1) g[i] = (byte) ((byte) c[i][j]*255); if (j == 2) b[i] = (byte) ((byte) c[i][j]*255); } } My question is how I can use my colormap for any image I want to load and map in the right way. Thank you very much! Greetings, protein1.

  • Looking for suggestions on how to reuse AlertDialogs to confirm actions of contextual menus on the items of an ActivityList

    - by Ozone
    I use a ListActivity to display a list of items. The user can long-press an item in the list to display a contextual menu. This menu contains among other things an option to delete the long-pressed item. When the user selects this option, a dialog pops up asking for confirmation of the deletion. Upon confirmation, the item is deleted from the list. I would like to reuse the AlertDialog as much as possible. My attempts at using onPrepareDialog(int, View, Bundle) have been defeated by the fact that the Bundle is not passed to the DialogInterface.OnClickListener. I end up having to recreate a listener on every invocation. I see several ways to solve this: recreate the dialog on every occasion (pros: simple, cons: wasteful) keep the DialogInterface.OnClickListener in a field on the ListActivity and keep the item to be deleted as a field of the listener. (pros: no memory waste, cons: need to manage state). Q: is this safe? have onPrepareDialog update the title, and bind new View.OnClickListeners on the buttons of the AlertDialog. (pros: limit waste, cons: new View.OnClickListener on every invocation). If DialogInterface.OnClickListener accepted a Bundle, I wouldn't have to jump through hoops to keep track of the item being deleted. This is not a blocker, but I would love to see an elegant solution. I would love to hear your suggestions :) Here is the code for option #1, if you want to play with this: public class Example extends ListActivity { private static final int CONFIRM_DELETE_DIALOG = 1; private static final String POSITION_KEY = "position"; private ArrayAdapter<String> mAdapter; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); mAdapter = new ArrayAdapter<String>( this, android.R.layout.simple_list_item_1, new String[] { "one", "two" }); setListAdapter(mAdapter); registerForContextMenu(getListView()); } @Override public void onCreateContextMenu(ContextMenu menu, View v, ContextMenuInfo menuInfo) { super.onCreateContextMenu(menu, v, menuInfo); getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.my_lovely_menu, menu); } @Override public boolean onContextItemSelected(MenuItem item) { AdapterContextMenuInfo info = (AdapterContextMenuInfo) item.getMenuInfo(); switch (item.getItemId()) { case R.id.delete_item: Bundle bundle = new Bundle(); bundle.putInt(POSITION_KEY, info.position); showDialog(CONFIRM_DELETE_DIALOG, bundle); return true; default: return super.onContextItemSelected(item); } } @Override protected Dialog onCreateDialog(int id, Bundle args) { switch (id) { case CONFIRM_DELETE_DIALOG: final int position = args.getInt(POSITION_KEY); AlertDialog.Builder builder = new AlertDialog.Builder(); builder.setCancelable(false); builder.setTitle(String.format( getString(R.string.confirm_delete), mAdapter.getItem(position))); DialogInterface.OnClickListener listener = new DialogInterface.OnClickListener() { public void onClick(DialogInterface dialog, int which) { switch (which) { case DialogInterface.BUTTON_POSITIVE: mAdapter.remove(mAdapter.getItem(position)); // Dismiss the dialog to ensure OnDismissListeners are notified. dialog.dismiss(); break; case DialogInterface.BUTTON_NEGATIVE: // Cancel the dialog to ensure OnCancelListeners are notified. dialog.cancel(); break; } // Remove the dialog so it is re-created next time it is required. removeDialog(CONFIRM_DELETE_DIALOG); } }; builder.setPositiveButton(android.R.string.yes, listener); builder.setNegativeButton(android.R.string.no, listener); return builder.create(); default: return super.onCreateDialog(id, args); } } }

  • Java: Object Array assignment in for loop

    - by Hackster
    I am trying to use Dijkstra's algorithm to find the shortest path from a specific vertex (v0) to the rest of them. That is solved and works well with this code from this link below: http://en.literateprograms.org/index.php?title=Special:DownloadCode/Dijkstra%27s_algorithm_(Java)&oldid=15444 I am having trouble with assigning the Edge array in a for loop from the user input, as opposed to hard-coding it like it is here. Any help assigning a new edge to Edge[] adjacencies from each vertex? Keeping in mind it could be 1 or multiple edges. class Vertex implements Comparable<Vertex> { public final String name; public Edge[] adjacencies; public double minDistance = Double.POSITIVE_INFINITY; public Vertex previous; public Vertex(String argName) { name = argName; } public String toString() { return name; } public int compareTo(Vertex other){ return Double.compare(minDistance, other.minDistance); } } class Edge{ public final Vertex target; public final double weight; public Edge(Vertex argTarget, double argWeight){ target = argTarget; weight = argWeight; } } public static void main(String[] args) { Vertex v[] = new Vertex[3]; Vertex v[0] = new Vertex("Harrisburg"); Vertex v[1] = new Vertex("Baltimore"); Vertex v[2] = new Vertex("Washington"); v0.adjacencies = new Edge[]{ new Edge(v[1], 1), new Edge(v[2], 3) }; v1.adjacencies = new Edge[]{ new Edge(v[0], 1), new Edge(v[2], 1),}; v2.adjacencies = new Edge[]{ new Edge(v[0], 3), new Edge(v[1], 1) }; Vertex[] vertices = { v0, v1, v2}; /*Three vertices with weight: V0 connects (V1,1),(V2,3) V1 connects (V0,1),(V2,1) V2 connects (V1,1),(V2,3) */ computePaths(v0); for (Vertex v : vertices){ System.out.println("Distance to " + v + ": " + v.minDistance); List<Vertex> path = getShortestPathTo(v); System.out.println("Path: " + path); } } } The above code works well in finding the shortest path from v0 to all the other vertices. The problem occurs when assigning the new edge[] to edge[] adjacencies. For example this does not produce the correct output: for (int i = 0; i < total_vertices; i++){ s = br.readLine(); char[] line = s.toCharArray(); for (int j = 0; j < line.length; j++){ if(j % 4 == 0 ){ //Input: vertex weight vertex weight: 1 1 2 3 int vert = Integer.parseInt(String.valueOf(line[j])); int w = Integer.parseInt(String.valueOf(line[j+2])); v[i].adjacencies = new Edge[] {new Edge(v[vert], w)}; } } } As opposed to this: v0.adjacencies = new Edge[]{ new Edge(v[1], 1), new Edge(v[2], 3) }; How can I take the user input and make an Edge[], to pass it to adjacencies? The problem is it could be 0 edges or many. Any help would be much appreciated Thanks!

  • Parallelism in .NET – Part 4, Imperative Data Parallelism: Aggregation

    - by Reed
    In the article on simple data parallelism, I described how to perform an operation on an entire collection of elements in parallel.  Often, this is not adequate, as the parallel operation is going to be performing some form of aggregation. Simple examples of this might include taking the sum of the results of processing a function on each element in the collection, or finding the minimum of the collection given some criteria.  This can be done using the techniques described in simple data parallelism, however, special care needs to be taken into account to synchronize the shared data appropriately.  The Task Parallel Library has tools to assist in this synchronization. The main issue with aggregation when parallelizing a routine is that you need to handle synchronization of data.  Since multiple threads will need to write to a shared portion of data.  Suppose, for example, that we wanted to parallelize a simple loop that looked for the minimum value within a dataset: double min = double.MaxValue; foreach(var item in collection) { double value = item.PerformComputation(); min = System.Math.Min(min, value); } .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; } This seems like a good candidate for parallelization, but there is a problem here.  If we just wrap this into a call to Parallel.ForEach, we’ll introduce a critical race condition, and get the wrong answer.  Let’s look at what happens here: // Buggy code! Do not use! double min = double.MaxValue; Parallel.ForEach(collection, item => { double value = item.PerformComputation(); min = System.Math.Min(min, value); }); This code has a fatal flaw: min will be checked, then set, by multiple threads simultaneously.  Two threads may perform the check at the same time, and set the wrong value for min.  Say we get a value of 1 in thread 1, and a value of 2 in thread 2, and these two elements are the first two to run.  If both hit the min check line at the same time, both will determine that min should change, to 1 and 2 respectively.  If element 1 happens to set the variable first, then element 2 sets the min variable, we’ll detect a min value of 2 instead of 1.  This can lead to wrong answers. Unfortunately, fixing this, with the Parallel.ForEach call we’re using, would require adding locking.  We would need to rewrite this like: // Safe, but slow double min = double.MaxValue; // Make a "lock" object object syncObject = new object(); Parallel.ForEach(collection, item => { double value = item.PerformComputation(); lock(syncObject) min = System.Math.Min(min, value); }); This will potentially add a huge amount of overhead to our calculation.  Since we can potentially block while waiting on the lock for every single iteration, we will most likely slow this down to where it is actually quite a bit slower than our serial implementation.  The problem is the lock statement – any time you use lock(object), you’re almost assuring reduced performance in a parallel situation.  This leads to two observations I’ll make: When parallelizing a routine, try to avoid locks. That being said: Always add any and all required synchronization to avoid race conditions. These two observations tend to be opposing forces – we often need to synchronize our algorithms, but we also want to avoid the synchronization when possible.  Looking at our routine, there is no way to directly avoid this lock, since each element is potentially being run on a separate thread, and this lock is necessary in order for our routine to function correctly every time. However, this isn’t the only way to design this routine to implement this algorithm.  Realize that, although our collection may have thousands or even millions of elements, we have a limited number of Processing Elements (PE).  Processing Element is the standard term for a hardware element which can process and execute instructions.  This typically is a core in your processor, but many modern systems have multiple hardware execution threads per core.  The Task Parallel Library will not execute the work for each item in the collection as a separate work item. Instead, when Parallel.ForEach executes, it will partition the collection into larger “chunks” which get processed on different threads via the ThreadPool.  This helps reduce the threading overhead, and help the overall speed.  In general, the Parallel class will only use one thread per PE in the system. Given the fact that there are typically fewer threads than work items, we can rethink our algorithm design.  We can parallelize our algorithm more effectively by approaching it differently.  Because the basic aggregation we are doing here (Min) is communitive, we do not need to perform this in a given order.  We knew this to be true already – otherwise, we wouldn’t have been able to parallelize this routine in the first place.  With this in mind, we can treat each thread’s work independently, allowing each thread to serially process many elements with no locking, then, after all the threads are complete, “merge” together the results. This can be accomplished via a different set of overloads in the Parallel class: Parallel.ForEach<TSource,TLocal>.  The idea behind these overloads is to allow each thread to begin by initializing some local state (TLocal).  The thread will then process an entire set of items in the source collection, providing that state to the delegate which processes an individual item.  Finally, at the end, a separate delegate is run which allows you to handle merging that local state into your final results. To rewriting our routine using Parallel.ForEach<TSource,TLocal>, we need to provide three delegates instead of one.  The most basic version of this function is declared as: public static ParallelLoopResult ForEach<TSource, TLocal>( IEnumerable<TSource> source, Func<TLocal> localInit, Func<TSource, ParallelLoopState, TLocal, TLocal> body, Action<TLocal> localFinally ) The first delegate (the localInit argument) is defined as Func<TLocal>.  This delegate initializes our local state.  It should return some object we can use to track the results of a single thread’s operations. The second delegate (the body argument) is where our main processing occurs, although now, instead of being an Action<T>, we actually provide a Func<TSource, ParallelLoopState, TLocal, TLocal> delegate.  This delegate will receive three arguments: our original element from the collection (TSource), a ParallelLoopState which we can use for early termination, and the instance of our local state we created (TLocal).  It should do whatever processing you wish to occur per element, then return the value of the local state after processing is completed. The third delegate (the localFinally argument) is defined as Action<TLocal>.  This delegate is passed our local state after it’s been processed by all of the elements this thread will handle.  This is where you can merge your final results together.  This may require synchronization, but now, instead of synchronizing once per element (potentially millions of times), you’ll only have to synchronize once per thread, which is an ideal situation. Now that I’ve explained how this works, lets look at the code: // Safe, and fast! double min = double.MaxValue; // Make a "lock" object object syncObject = new object(); Parallel.ForEach( collection, // First, we provide a local state initialization delegate. () => double.MaxValue, // Next, we supply the body, which takes the original item, loop state, // and local state, and returns a new local state (item, loopState, localState) => { double value = item.PerformComputation(); return System.Math.Min(localState, value); }, // Finally, we provide an Action<TLocal>, to "merge" results together localState => { // This requires locking, but it's only once per used thread lock(syncObj) min = System.Math.Min(min, localState); } ); Although this is a bit more complicated than the previous version, it is now both thread-safe, and has minimal locking.  This same approach can be used by Parallel.For, although now, it’s Parallel.For<TLocal>.  When working with Parallel.For<TLocal>, you use the same triplet of delegates, with the same purpose and results. Also, many times, you can completely avoid locking by using a method of the Interlocked class to perform the final aggregation in an atomic operation.  The MSDN example demonstrating this same technique using Parallel.For uses the Interlocked class instead of a lock, since they are doing a sum operation on a long variable, which is possible via Interlocked.Add. By taking advantage of local state, we can use the Parallel class methods to parallelize algorithms such as aggregation, which, at first, may seem like poor candidates for parallelization.  Doing so requires careful consideration, and often requires a slight redesign of the algorithm, but the performance gains can be significant if handled in a way to avoid excessive synchronization.

  • Java Logger API

    - by Koppar
    This is a more like a tip rather than technical write up and serves as a quick intro for newbies. The logger API helps to diagnose application level or JDK level issues at runtime. There are 7 levels which decide the detailing in logging (SEVERE, WARNING, INFO, CONFIG, FINE, FINER, FINEST). Its best to start with highest level and as we narrow down, use more detailed logging for a specific area. SEVERE is the highest and FINEST is the lowest. This may not make sense until we understand some jargon. The Logger class provides the ability to stream messages to an output stream in a format that can be controlled by the user. What this translates to is, I can create a logger with this simple invocation and use it add debug messages in my class: import java.util.logging.*; private static final Logger focusLog = Logger.getLogger("java.awt.focus.KeyboardFocusManager"); if (focusLog.isLoggable(Level.FINEST)) { focusLog.log(Level.FINEST, "Calling peer setCurrentFocusOwner}); LogManager acts like a book keeper and all the getLogger calls are forwarded to LogManager. The LogManager itself is a singleton class object which gets statically initialized on JVM start up. More on this later. If there is no existing logger with the given name, a new one is created. If there is one (and not yet GC’ed), then the existing Logger object is returned. By default, a root logger is created on JVM start up. All anonymous loggers are made as the children of the root logger. Named loggers have the hierarchy as per their name resolutions. Eg: java.awt.focus is the parent logger for java.awt.focus.KeyboardFocusManager etc. Before logging any message, the logger checks for the log level specified. If null is specified, the log level of the parent logger will be set. However, if the log level is off, no log messages would be written, irrespective of the parent’s log level. All the messages that are posted to the Logger are handled as a LogRecord object.i.e. FocusLog.log would create a new LogRecord object with the log level and message as its data members). The level of logging and thread number are also tracked. LogRecord is passed on to all the registered Handlers. Handler is basically a means to output the messages. The output may be redirected to either a log file or console or a network logging service. The Handler classes use the LogManager properties to set filters and formatters. During initialization or JVM start up, LogManager looks for logging.properties file in jre/lib and sets the properties if the file is provided. An alternate location for properties file can also be specified by setting java.util.logging.config.file system property. This can be set in Java Control Panel ? Java ? Runtime parameters as -Djava.util.logging.config.file = <mylogfile> or passed as a command line parameter java -Djava.util.logging.config.file = C:/Sunita/myLog The redirection of logging depends on what is specified rather registered as a handler with JVM in the properties file. java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler sends the output to system.err and java.util.logging.FileHandler sends the output to file. File name of the log file can also be specified. If you prefer XML format output, in the configuration file, set java.util.logging.FileHandler.formatter = java.util.logging.XMLFormatter and if you prefer simple text, set set java.util.logging.FileHandler.formatter =java.util.logging.SimpleFormatter Below is the default logging Configuration file: ############################################################ # Default Logging Configuration File # You can use a different file by specifying a filename # with the java.util.logging.config.file system property. # For example java -Djava.util.logging.config.file=myfile ############################################################ ############################################################ # Global properties ############################################################ # "handlers" specifies a comma separated list of log Handler # classes. These handlers will be installed during VM startup. # Note that these classes must be on the system classpath. # By default we only configure a ConsoleHandler, which will only # show messages at the INFO and above levels. handlers= java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler # To also add the FileHandler, use the following line instead. #handlers= java.util.logging.FileHandler, java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler # Default global logging level. # This specifies which kinds of events are logged across # all loggers. For any given facility this global level # can be overriden by a facility specific level # Note that the ConsoleHandler also has a separate level # setting to limit messages printed to the console. .level= INFO ############################################################ # Handler specific properties. # Describes specific configuration info for Handlers. ############################################################ # default file output is in user's home directory. java.util.logging.FileHandler.pattern = %h/java%u.log java.util.logging.FileHandler.limit = 50000 java.util.logging.FileHandler.count = 1 java.util.logging.FileHandler.formatter = java.util.logging.XMLFormatter # Limit the message that are printed on the console to INFO and above. java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler.level = INFO java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler.formatter = java.util.logging.SimpleFormatter ############################################################ # Facility specific properties. # Provides extra control for each logger. ############################################################ # For example, set the com.xyz.foo logger to only log SEVERE # messages: com.xyz.foo.level = SEVERE Since I primarily use this method to track focus issues, here is how I get detailed awt focus related logging. Just set the logger name to java.awt.focus.level=FINEST and change the default log level to FINEST. Below is a basic sample program. The sample programs are from http://www2.cs.uic.edu/~sloan/CLASSES/java/ and have been modified to illustrate the logging API. By changing the .level property in the logging.properties file, one can control the output written to the logs. To play around with the example, try changing the levels in the logging.properties file and notice the difference in messages going to the log file. • Heaps of Trouble?

    - by Paul White NZ
    If you’re not already a regular reader of Brad Schulz’s blog, you’re missing out on some great material.  In his latest entry, he is tasked with optimizing a query run against tables that have no indexes at all.  The problem is, predictably, that performance is not very good.  The catch is that we are not allowed to create any indexes (or even new statistics) as part of our optimization efforts. In this post, I’m going to look at the problem from a slightly different angle, and present an alternative solution to the one Brad found.  Inevitably, there’s going to be some overlap between our entries, and while you don’t necessarily need to read Brad’s post before this one, I do strongly recommend that you read it at some stage; he covers some important points that I won’t cover again here. The Example We’ll use data from the AdventureWorks database, copied to temporary unindexed tables.  A script to create these structures is shown below: CREATE TABLE #Custs ( CustomerID INTEGER NOT NULL, TerritoryID INTEGER NULL, CustomerType NCHAR(1) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AI NOT NULL, ); GO CREATE TABLE #Prods ( ProductMainID INTEGER NOT NULL, ProductSubID INTEGER NOT NULL, ProductSubSubID INTEGER NOT NULL, Name NVARCHAR(50) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AI NOT NULL, ); GO CREATE TABLE #OrdHeader ( SalesOrderID INTEGER NOT NULL, OrderDate DATETIME NOT NULL, SalesOrderNumber NVARCHAR(25) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AI NOT NULL, CustomerID INTEGER NOT NULL, ); GO CREATE TABLE #OrdDetail ( SalesOrderID INTEGER NOT NULL, OrderQty SMALLINT NOT NULL, LineTotal NUMERIC(38,6) NOT NULL, ProductMainID INTEGER NOT NULL, ProductSubID INTEGER NOT NULL, ProductSubSubID INTEGER NOT NULL, ); GO INSERT #Custs ( CustomerID, TerritoryID, CustomerType ) SELECT C.CustomerID, C.TerritoryID, C.CustomerType FROM AdventureWorks.Sales.Customer C WITH (TABLOCK); GO INSERT #Prods ( ProductMainID, ProductSubID, ProductSubSubID, Name ) SELECT P.ProductID, P.ProductID, P.ProductID, P.Name FROM AdventureWorks.Production.Product P WITH (TABLOCK); GO INSERT #OrdHeader ( SalesOrderID, OrderDate, SalesOrderNumber, CustomerID ) SELECT H.SalesOrderID, H.OrderDate, H.SalesOrderNumber, H.CustomerID FROM AdventureWorks.Sales.SalesOrderHeader H WITH (TABLOCK); GO INSERT #OrdDetail ( SalesOrderID, OrderQty, LineTotal, ProductMainID, ProductSubID, ProductSubSubID ) SELECT D.SalesOrderID, D.OrderQty, D.LineTotal, D.ProductID, D.ProductID, D.ProductID FROM AdventureWorks.Sales.SalesOrderDetail D WITH (TABLOCK); The query itself is a simple join of the four tables: SELECT P.ProductMainID AS PID, P.Name, D.OrderQty, H.SalesOrderNumber, H.OrderDate, C.TerritoryID FROM #Prods P JOIN #OrdDetail D ON P.ProductMainID = D.ProductMainID AND P.ProductSubID = D.ProductSubID AND P.ProductSubSubID = D.ProductSubSubID JOIN #OrdHeader H ON D.SalesOrderID = H.SalesOrderID JOIN #Custs C ON H.CustomerID = C.CustomerID ORDER BY P.ProductMainID ASC OPTION (RECOMPILE, MAXDOP 1); Remember that these tables have no indexes at all, and only the single-column sampled statistics SQL Server automatically creates (assuming default settings).  The estimated query plan produced for the test query looks like this (click to enlarge): The Problem The problem here is one of cardinality estimation – the number of rows SQL Server expects to find at each step of the plan.  The lack of indexes and useful statistical information means that SQL Server does not have the information it needs to make a good estimate.  Every join in the plan shown above estimates that it will produce just a single row as output.  Brad covers the factors that lead to the low estimates in his post. In reality, the join between the #Prods and #OrdDetail tables will produce 121,317 rows.  It should not surprise you that this has rather dire consequences for the remainder of the query plan.  In particular, it makes a nonsense of the optimizer’s decision to use Nested Loops to join to the two remaining tables.  Instead of scanning the #OrdHeader and #Custs tables once (as it expected), it has to perform 121,317 full scans of each.  The query takes somewhere in the region of twenty minutes to run to completion on my development machine. A Solution At this point, you may be thinking the same thing I was: if we really are stuck with no indexes, the best we can do is to use hash joins everywhere. We can force the exclusive use of hash joins in several ways, the two most common being join and query hints.  A join hint means writing the query using the INNER HASH JOIN syntax; using a query hint involves adding OPTION (HASH JOIN) at the bottom of the query.  The difference is that using join hints also forces the order of the join, whereas the query hint gives the optimizer freedom to reorder the joins at its discretion. Adding the OPTION (HASH JOIN) hint results in this estimated plan: That produces the correct output in around seven seconds, which is quite an improvement!  As a purely practical matter, and given the rigid rules of the environment we find ourselves in, we might leave things there.  (We can improve the hashing solution a bit – I’ll come back to that later on). Faster Nested Loops It might surprise you to hear that we can beat the performance of the hash join solution shown above using nested loops joins exclusively, and without breaking the rules we have been set. The key to this part is to realize that a condition like (A = B) can be expressed as (A <= B) AND (A >= B).  Armed with this tremendous new insight, we can rewrite the join predicates like so: SELECT P.ProductMainID AS PID, P.Name, D.OrderQty, H.SalesOrderNumber, H.OrderDate, C.TerritoryID FROM #OrdDetail D JOIN #OrdHeader H ON D.SalesOrderID >= H.SalesOrderID AND D.SalesOrderID <= H.SalesOrderID JOIN #Custs C ON H.CustomerID >= C.CustomerID AND H.CustomerID <= C.CustomerID JOIN #Prods P ON P.ProductMainID >= D.ProductMainID AND P.ProductMainID <= D.ProductMainID AND P.ProductSubID = D.ProductSubID AND P.ProductSubSubID = D.ProductSubSubID ORDER BY D.ProductMainID OPTION (RECOMPILE, LOOP JOIN, MAXDOP 1, FORCE ORDER); I’ve also added LOOP JOIN and FORCE ORDER query hints to ensure that only nested loops joins are used, and that the tables are joined in the order they appear.  The new estimated execution plan is: This new query runs in under 2 seconds. Why Is It Faster? The main reason for the improvement is the appearance of the eager Index Spools, which are also known as index-on-the-fly spools.  If you read my Inside The Optimiser series you might be interested to know that the rule responsible is called JoinToIndexOnTheFly. An eager index spool consumes all rows from the table it sits above, and builds a index suitable for the join to seek on.  Taking the index spool above the #Custs table as an example, it reads all the CustomerID and TerritoryID values with a single scan of the table, and builds an index keyed on CustomerID.  The term ‘eager’ means that the spool consumes all of its input rows when it starts up.  The index is built in a work table in tempdb, has no associated statistics, and only exists until the query finishes executing. The result is that each unindexed table is only scanned once, and just for the columns necessary to build the temporary index.  From that point on, every execution of the inner side of the join is answered by a seek on the temporary index – not the base table. A second optimization is that the sort on ProductMainID (required by the ORDER BY clause) is performed early, on just the rows coming from the #OrdDetail table.  The optimizer has a good estimate for the number of rows it needs to sort at that stage – it is just the cardinality of the table itself.  The accuracy of the estimate there is important because it helps determine the memory grant given to the sort operation.  Nested loops join preserves the order of rows on its outer input, so sorting early is safe.  (Hash joins do not preserve order in this way, of course). The extra lazy spool on the #Prods branch is a further optimization that avoids executing the seek on the temporary index if the value being joined (the ‘outer reference’) hasn’t changed from the last row received on the outer input.  It takes advantage of the fact that rows are still sorted on ProductMainID, so if duplicates exist, they will arrive at the join operator one after the other. The optimizer is quite conservative about introducing index spools into a plan, because creating and dropping a temporary index is a relatively expensive operation.  It’s presence in a plan is often an indication that a useful index is missing. I want to stress that I rewrote the query in this way primarily as an educational exercise – I can’t imagine having to do something so horrible to a production system. Improving the Hash Join I promised I would return to the solution that uses hash joins.  You might be puzzled that SQL Server can create three new indexes (and perform all those nested loops iterations) faster than it can perform three hash joins.  The answer, again, is down to the poor information available to the optimizer.  Let’s look at the hash join plan again: Two of the hash joins have single-row estimates on their build inputs.  SQL Server fixes the amount of memory available for the hash table based on this cardinality estimate, so at run time the hash join very quickly runs out of memory. This results in the join spilling hash buckets to disk, and any rows from the probe input that hash to the spilled buckets also get written to disk.  The join process then continues, and may again run out of memory.  This is a recursive process, which may eventually result in SQL Server resorting to a bailout join algorithm, which is guaranteed to complete eventually, but may be very slow.  The data sizes in the example tables are not large enough to force a hash bailout, but it does result in multiple levels of hash recursion.  You can see this for yourself by tracing the Hash Warning event using the Profiler tool. The final sort in the plan also suffers from a similar problem: it receives very little memory and has to perform multiple sort passes, saving intermediate runs to disk (the Sort Warnings Profiler event can be used to confirm this).  Notice also that because hash joins don’t preserve sort order, the sort cannot be pushed down the plan toward the #OrdDetail table, as in the nested loops plan. Ok, so now we understand the problems, what can we do to fix it?  We can address the hash spilling by forcing a different order for the joins: SELECT P.ProductMainID AS PID, P.Name, D.OrderQty, H.SalesOrderNumber, H.OrderDate, C.TerritoryID FROM #Prods P JOIN #Custs C JOIN #OrdHeader H ON H.CustomerID = C.CustomerID JOIN #OrdDetail D ON D.SalesOrderID = H.SalesOrderID ON P.ProductMainID = D.ProductMainID AND P.ProductSubID = D.ProductSubID AND P.ProductSubSubID = D.ProductSubSubID ORDER BY D.ProductMainID OPTION (MAXDOP 1, HASH JOIN, FORCE ORDER); With this plan, each of the inputs to the hash joins has a good estimate, and no hash recursion occurs.  The final sort still suffers from the one-row estimate problem, and we get a single-pass sort warning as it writes rows to disk.  Even so, the query runs to completion in three or four seconds.  That’s around half the time of the previous hashing solution, but still not as fast as the nested loops trickery. Final Thoughts SQL Server’s optimizer makes cost-based decisions, so it is vital to provide it with accurate information.  We can’t really blame the performance problems highlighted here on anything other than the decision to use completely unindexed tables, and not to allow the creation of additional statistics. I should probably stress that the nested loops solution shown above is not one I would normally contemplate in the real world.  It’s there primarily for its educational and entertainment value.  I might perhaps use it to demonstrate to the sceptical that SQL Server itself is crying out for an index. • So…is it a Seek or a Scan?

    - by Paul White
    You’re probably most familiar with the terms ‘Seek’ and ‘Scan’ from the graphical plans produced by SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS).  The image to the left shows the most common ones, with the three types of scan at the top, followed by four types of seek.  You might look to the SSMS tool-tip descriptions to explain the differences between them: Not hugely helpful are they?  Both mention scans and ranges (nothing about seeks) and the Index Seek description implies that it will not scan the index entirely (which isn’t necessarily true). Recall also yesterday’s post where we saw two Clustered Index Seek operations doing very different things.  The first Seek performed 63 single-row seeking operations; and the second performed a ‘Range Scan’ (more on those later in this post).  I hope you agree that those were two very different operations, and perhaps you are wondering why there aren’t different graphical plan icons for Range Scans and Seeks?  I have often wondered about that, and the first person to mention it after yesterday’s post was Erin Stellato (twitter | blog): Before we go on to make sense of all this, let’s look at another example of how SQL Server confusingly mixes the terms ‘Scan’ and ‘Seek’ in different contexts.  The diagram below shows a very simple heap table with two columns, one of which is the non-clustered Primary Key, and the other has a non-unique non-clustered index defined on it.  The right hand side of the diagram shows a simple query, it’s associated query plan, and a couple of extracts from the SSMS tool-tip and Properties windows. Notice the ‘scan direction’ entry in the Properties window snippet.  Is this a seek or a scan?  The different references to Scans and Seeks are even more pronounced in the XML plan output that the graphical plan is based on.  This fragment is what lies behind the single Index Seek icon shown above: You’ll find the same confusing references to Seeks and Scans throughout the product and its documentation. Making Sense of Seeks Let’s forget all about scans for a moment, and think purely about seeks.  Loosely speaking, a seek is the process of navigating an index B-tree to find a particular index record, most often at the leaf level.  A seek starts at the root and navigates down through the levels of the index to find the point of interest: Singleton Lookups The simplest sort of seek predicate performs this traversal to find (at most) a single record.  This is the case when we search for a single value using a unique index and an equality predicate.  It should be readily apparent that this type of search will either find one record, or none at all.  This operation is known as a singleton lookup.  Given the example table from before, the following query is an example of a singleton lookup seek: Sadly, there’s nothing in the graphical plan or XML output to show that this is a singleton lookup – you have to infer it from the fact that this is a single-value equality seek on a unique index.  The other common examples of a singleton lookup are bookmark lookups – both the RID and Key Lookup forms are singleton lookups (an RID lookup finds a single record in a heap from the unique row locator, and a Key Lookup does much the same thing on a clustered table).  If you happen to run your query with STATISTICS IO ON, you will notice that ‘Scan Count’ is always zero for a singleton lookup. Range Scans The other type of seek predicate is a ‘seek plus range scan’, which I will refer to simply as a range scan.  The seek operation makes an initial descent into the index structure to find the first leaf row that qualifies, and then performs a range scan (either backwards or forwards in the index) until it reaches the end of the scan range. The ability of a range scan to proceed in either direction comes about because index pages at the same level are connected by a doubly-linked list – each page has a pointer to the previous page (in logical key order) as well as a pointer to the following page.  The doubly-linked list is represented by the green and red dotted arrows in the index diagram presented earlier.  One subtle (but important) point is that the notion of a ‘forward’ or ‘backward’ scan applies to the logical key order defined when the index was built.  In the present case, the non-clustered primary key index was created as follows: CREATE TABLE dbo.Example ( key_col INTEGER NOT NULL, data INTEGER NOT NULL, CONSTRAINT [PK dbo.Example key_col] PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED (key_col ASC) ) ; Notice that the primary key index specifies an ascending sort order for the single key column.  This means that a forward scan of the index will retrieve keys in ascending order, while a backward scan would retrieve keys in descending key order.  If the index had been created instead on key_col DESC, a forward scan would retrieve keys in descending order, and a backward scan would return keys in ascending order. A range scan seek predicate may have a Start condition, an End condition, or both.  Where one is missing, the scan starts (or ends) at one extreme end of the index, depending on the scan direction.  Some examples might help clarify that: the following diagram shows four queries, each of which performs a single seek against a column holding every integer from 1 to 100 inclusive.  The results from each query are shown in the blue columns, and relevant attributes from the Properties window appear on the right: Query 1 specifies that all key_col values less than 5 should be returned in ascending order.  The query plan achieves this by seeking to the start of the index leaf (there is no explicit starting value) and scanning forward until the End condition (key_col < 5) is no longer satisfied (SQL Server knows it can stop looking as soon as it finds a key_col value that isn’t less than 5 because all later index entries are guaranteed to sort higher). Query 2 asks for key_col values greater than 95, in descending order.  SQL Server returns these results by seeking to the end of the index, and scanning backwards (in descending key order) until it comes across a row that isn’t greater than 95.  Sharp-eyed readers may notice that the end-of-scan condition is shown as a Start range value.  This is a bug in the XML show plan which bubbles up to the Properties window – when a backward scan is performed, the roles of the Start and End values are reversed, but the plan does not reflect that.  Oh well. Query 3 looks for key_col values that are greater than or equal to 10, and less than 15, in ascending order.  This time, SQL Server seeks to the first index record that matches the Start condition (key_col >= 10) and then scans forward through the leaf pages until the End condition (key_col < 15) is no longer met. Query 4 performs much the same sort of operation as Query 3, but requests the output in descending order.  Again, we have to mentally reverse the Start and End conditions because of the bug, but otherwise the process is the same as always: SQL Server finds the highest-sorting record that meets the condition ‘key_col < 25’ and scans backward until ‘key_col >= 20’ is no longer true. One final point to note: seek operations always have the Ordered: True attribute.  This means that the operator always produces rows in a sorted order, either ascending or descending depending on how the index was defined, and whether the scan part of the operation is forward or backward.  You cannot rely on this sort order in your queries of course (you must always specify an ORDER BY clause if order is important) but SQL Server can make use of the sort order internally.  In the four queries above, the query optimizer was able to avoid an explicit Sort operator to honour the ORDER BY clause, for example. Multiple Seek Predicates As we saw yesterday, a single index seek plan operator can contain one or more seek predicates.  These seek predicates can either be all singleton seeks or all range scans – SQL Server does not mix them.  For example, you might expect the following query to contain two seek predicates, a singleton seek to find the single record in the unique index where key_col = 10, and a range scan to find the key_col values between 15 and 20: SELECT key_col FROM dbo.Example WHERE key_col = 10 OR key_col BETWEEN 15 AND 20 ORDER BY key_col ASC ; In fact, SQL Server transforms the singleton seek (key_col = 10) to the equivalent range scan, Start:[key_col >= 10], End:[key_col <= 10].  This allows both range scans to be evaluated by a single seek operator.  To be clear, this query results in two range scans: one from 10 to 10, and one from 15 to 20. Final Thoughts That’s it for today – tomorrow we’ll look at monitoring singleton lookups and range scans, and I’ll show you a seek on a heap table. Yes, a seek.  On a heap.  Not an index! If you would like to run the queries in this post for yourself, there’s a script below.  Thanks for reading! IF OBJECT_ID(N'dbo.Example', N'U') IS NOT NULL BEGIN DROP TABLE dbo.Example; END ; -- Test table is a heap -- Non-clustered primary key on 'key_col' CREATE TABLE dbo.Example ( key_col INTEGER NOT NULL, data INTEGER NOT NULL, CONSTRAINT [PK dbo.Example key_col] PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED (key_col) ) ; -- Non-unique non-clustered index on the 'data' column CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [IX dbo.Example data] ON dbo.Example (data) ; -- Add 100 rows INSERT dbo.Example WITH (TABLOCKX) ( key_col, data ) SELECT key_col = V.number, data = V.number FROM master.dbo.spt_values AS V WHERE V.[type] = N'P' AND V.number BETWEEN 1 AND 100 ; -- ================ -- Singleton lookup -- ================ ; -- Single value equality seek in a unique index -- Scan count = 0 when STATISTIS IO is ON -- Check the XML SHOWPLAN SELECT E.key_col FROM dbo.Example AS E WHERE E.key_col = 32 ; -- =========== -- Range Scans -- =========== ; -- Query 1 SELECT E.key_col FROM dbo.Example AS E WHERE E.key_col <= 5 ORDER BY E.key_col ASC ; -- Query 2 SELECT E.key_col FROM dbo.Example AS E WHERE E.key_col > 95 ORDER BY E.key_col DESC ; -- Query 3 SELECT E.key_col FROM dbo.Example AS E WHERE E.key_col >= 10 AND E.key_col < 15 ORDER BY E.key_col ASC ; -- Query 4 SELECT E.key_col FROM dbo.Example AS E WHERE E.key_col >= 20 AND E.key_col < 25 ORDER BY E.key_col DESC ; -- Final query (singleton + range = 2 range scans) SELECT E.key_col FROM dbo.Example AS E WHERE E.key_col = 10 OR E.key_col BETWEEN 15 AND 20 ORDER BY E.key_col ASC ; -- === TIDY UP === DROP TABLE dbo.Example; © 2011 Paul White email: [email protected] twitter: @SQL_Kiwi

  • VLOOKUP in Excel, part 2: Using VLOOKUP without a database

    - by Mark Virtue
    In a recent article, we introduced the Excel function called VLOOKUP and explained how it could be used to retrieve information from a database into a cell in a local worksheet.  In that article we mentioned that there were two uses for VLOOKUP, and only one of them dealt with querying databases.  In this article, the second and final in the VLOOKUP series, we examine this other, lesser known use for the VLOOKUP function. If you haven’t already done so, please read the first VLOOKUP article – this article will assume that many of the concepts explained in that article are already known to the reader. When working with databases, VLOOKUP is passed a “unique identifier” that serves to identify which data record we wish to find in the database (e.g. a product code or customer ID).  This unique identifier must exist in the database, otherwise VLOOKUP returns us an error.  In this article, we will examine a way of using VLOOKUP where the identifier doesn’t need to exist in the database at all.  It’s almost as if VLOOKUP can adopt a “near enough is good enough” approach to returning the data we’re looking for.  In certain circumstances, this is exactly what we need. We will illustrate this article with a real-world example – that of calculating the commissions that are generated on a set of sales figures.  We will start with a very simple scenario, and then progressively make it more complex, until the only rational solution to the problem is to use VLOOKUP.  The initial scenario in our fictitious company works like this:  If a salesperson creates more than $30,000 worth of sales in a given year, the commission they earn on those sales is 30%.  Otherwise their commission is only 20%.  So far this is a pretty simple worksheet: To use this worksheet, the salesperson enters their sales figures in cell B1, and the formula in cell B2 calculates the correct commission rate they are entitled to receive, which is used in cell B3 to calculate the total commission that the salesperson is owed (which is a simple multiplication of B1 and B2). The cell B2 contains the only interesting part of this worksheet – the formula for deciding which commission rate to use: the one below the threshold of $30,000, or the one above the threshold.  This formula makes use of the Excel function called IF.  For those readers that are not familiar with IF, it works like this: IF(condition,value if true,value if false) Where the condition is an expression that evaluates to either true or false.  In the example above, the condition is the expression B1<B5, which can be read as “Is B1 less than B5?”, or, put another way, “Are the total sales less than the threshold”.  If the answer to this question is “yes” (true), then we use the value if true parameter of the function, namely B6 in this case – the commission rate if the sales total was below the threshold.  If the answer to the question is “no” (false), then we use the value if false parameter of the function, namely B7 in this case – the commission rate if the sales total was above the threshold. As you can see, using a sales total of $20,000 gives us a commission rate of 20% in cell B2.  If we enter a value of $40,000, we get a different commission rate: So our spreadsheet is working. Let’s make it more complex.  Let’s introduce a second threshold:  If the salesperson earns more than $40,000, then their commission rate increases to 40%: Easy enough to understand in the real world, but in cell B2 our formula is getting more complex.  If you look closely at the formula, you’ll see that the third parameter of the original IF function (the value if false) is now an entire IF function in its own right.  This is called a nested function (a function within a function).  It’s perfectly valid in Excel (it even works!), but it’s harder to read and understand. We’re not going to go into the nuts and bolts of how and why this works, nor will we examine the nuances of nested functions.  This is a tutorial on VLOOKUP, not on Excel in general. Anyway, it gets worse!  What about when we decide that if they earn more than $50,000 then they’re entitled to 50% commission, and if they earn more than $60,000 then they’re entitled to 60% commission? Now the formula in cell B2, while correct, has become virtually unreadable.  No-one should have to write formulae where the functions are nested four levels deep!  Surely there must be a simpler way? There certainly is.  VLOOKUP to the rescue! Let’s redesign the worksheet a bit.  We’ll keep all the same figures, but organize it in a new way, a more tabular way: Take a moment and verify for yourself that the new Rate Table works exactly the same as the series of thresholds above. Conceptually, what we’re about to do is use VLOOKUP to look up the salesperson’s sales total (from B1) in the rate table and return to us the corresponding commission rate.  Note that the salesperson may have indeed created sales that are not one of the five values in the rate table ($0, $30,000, $40,000, $50,000 or $60,000).  They may have created sales of $34,988.  It’s important to note that $34,988 does not appear in the rate table.  Let’s see if VLOOKUP can solve our problem anyway… We select cell B2 (the location we want to put our formula), and then insert the VLOOKUP function from the Formulas tab: The Function Arguments box for VLOOKUP appears.  We fill in the arguments (parameters) one by one, starting with the Lookup_value, which is, in this case, the sales total from cell B1.  We place the cursor in the Lookup_value field and then click once on cell B1: Next we need to specify to VLOOKUP what table to lookup this data in.  In this example, it’s the rate table, of course.  We place the cursor in the Table_array field, and then highlight the entire rate table – excluding the headings: Next we must specify which column in the table contains the information we want our formula to return to us.  In this case we want the commission rate, which is found in the second column in the table, so we therefore enter a 2 into the Col_index_num field: Finally we enter a value in the Range_lookup field. Important:  It is the use of this field that differentiates the two ways of using VLOOKUP.  To use VLOOKUP with a database, this final parameter, Range_lookup, must always be set to FALSE, but with this other use of VLOOKUP, we must either leave it blank or enter a value of TRUE.  When using VLOOKUP, it is vital that you make the correct choice for this final parameter. To be explicit, we will enter a value of true in the Range_lookup field.  It would also be fine to leave it blank, as this is the default value: We have completed all the parameters.  We now click the OK button, and Excel builds our VLOOKUP formula for us: If we experiment with a few different sales total amounts, we can satisfy ourselves that the formula is working. Conclusion In the “database” version of VLOOKUP, where the Range_lookup parameter is FALSE, the value passed in the first parameter (Lookup_value) must be present in the database.  In other words, we’re looking for an exact match. But in this other use of VLOOKUP, we are not necessarily looking for an exact match.  In this case, “near enough is good enough”.  But what do we mean by “near enough”?  Let’s use an example:  When searching for a commission rate on a sales total of $34,988, our VLOOKUP formula will return us a value of 30%, which is the correct answer.  Why did it choose the row in the table containing 30% ?  What, in fact, does “near enough” mean in this case?  Let’s be precise: When Range_lookup is set to TRUE (or omitted), VLOOKUP will look in column 1 and match the highest value that is not greater than the Lookup_value parameter. It’s also important to note that for this system to work, the table must be sorted in ascending order on column 1! If you would like to practice with VLOOKUP, the sample file illustrated in this article can be downloaded from here.
